- A reading from the Acts of the apostles.
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
Suddenly, there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation
under Heaven staying in Jerusalem.
At this sound they gathered in a large crowd,
but they were confused
because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
They were astounded and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
"Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?
"We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites,
"inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia,
"Pontius and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia
"Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene
"as well as travelers from Rome,
"both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs.
"Yet, we hear them speaking in our own tongues
"of the mighty acts of God."
The word of the Lord.

- A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians.
Brothers and sisters, live by the Spirit
and you will certainly not gratify the desires of the flesh.
For the flesh has desires against the Spirit
and the Spirit against the flesh.
These are opposed to each other,
so that you may not do what you want.
But if you are guided by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, lust, idolatry,
sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of furry, acts of selfishness
dissensions, fractions, occasions of envy,
drinking bouts, orgies and the like.
I warn you as I warned you before
that those who do such things
will not inherit the kingdom of God.
In contrast the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
against such there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have
crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live in the Spirit,
let us also follow the Spirit.

When the Advocate comes,
who I will send from my Father,
the Spirit of Truth that proceeds from the Father
he will testify to me and you will also testify
because you have been with me from the beginning.
I have much more to tell you,
but you cannot bear it now.
When he comes, the Spirit of Truth
he will guide you to all truth.
He will not speak on his own
But he will speak what he hears
and will declare to you the things that are coming.
He will glorify me
because he will take from me what is mine
and declare it to you.
Everything that my Father has is mine
and for that reason I told you
that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost,
which occurs 50 days after Easter.
It was one of the three major Jewish pilgrim feasts.
It marked the end of the grain harvest.
It was also called the Feast of Weeks
because it occurred seven weeks
after the Feast of Unleavened Bread or Passover.
Every Jewish male was obliged to go to the festival
if they were near Jerusalem every year.
If you lived away from Israel,
you were expected to make the journey
at least once in your lifetime.
That is why so many males were gathered in Jerusalem.
When God was encountered in the Old Testament,
you heard different signs and symbols.
You had a burning bush, a fire,
thunder, lightening,
trumpet blast, earthquakes, and wind.
Luke uses some of these symbols
to describe the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Just imagine being one of the disciples on Easter Sunday.
The past few days have been marked
not only by the tragic death of Jesus
but also by your own spectacular failure.
After spending so much time with Jesus,
watching him perform miracles
and hearing him speak about God's mercy,
you deserted him in his hour of need.
You couldn't even stay awake with him
as he prayed at Gethsemane.
Now imagine Jesus has been risen
and is standing right in front of you.
Seeing him again alive but still wounded
brings back these memories.
You cringe inwardly and await for him to lash out at you
and berate you for your unbelief yet again.
But instead he says the thing that you least expect.
"Peace be with you."
No condemnation.
No anger.
Not even a mild rebuke just pure meek but powerful mercy.
He still loves you.
He treasures you.
All he is concerned about is that you find peace.
Your heart melts.
Joy fills your being.
You will want to express your gratitude in praise.
But words fail you.
Then Jesus says something unexpected again,
"As the Father has sent me so I send you."
God had just sent Jesus back to you as a sign
of God's love and mercy.
He sent to you Jesus so that you can see
what love looks and feels like
and now Jesus is sending you to do the same thing.
How could you possibly show such love?
How could you possibly be like Christ?
Sensing your confusion, Jesus breathes on you
and says, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
Once more your heart melts.
Only this time the feeling is more personal.
The Holy Spirit is pouring out
God's love and mercy into your heart.
That's how he is sending you out
forgiven, filled with his love,
and equipped to share that love.
Jesus is sending you too just as the Father sent him.
He's breathing his Spirit into you
just as he breathed into his disciples.
We need to embrace our mission.
May the Holy Spirit inspire us to reach out to others
and not to be concerned with our own needs.
May the Holy Spirit build up the reign of God in our hearts
our minds and in our presence.

the Father Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to Heaven and is seated
at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From there he'll come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and life everlasting, amen.
- Gathered in this place,
we have come to celebrate God's spirit dwelling among us.
Let us give voice to that Spirit
