Waching daily Jan 1 2019

In the last episode of Down the Rabbit Hole, we discussed what would happen if we had no

emotions.

In this episode, I'd like to talk about the surprising truth about how emotions are

made.

There are many theories of emotion, but I'm just going to be discussing one: the theory

of constructed emotion which was coined by Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett.

I think you'll find that this theory is interesting, unintuitive, and important; you'll

never look at emotion the same way again.

Without further hesitation, let's just keep on jumping into it.

Perhaps, the best place to start is with the brain.

The brain evolved to serve the body.

You body is full of resources that need to be balanced and kept in a healthy range.

Dr. Barrett coins a useful term here: body-budget.

Your body needs to maintain a healthy budget of these resources, so you can survive and

thrive.

Anytime there is change in your body budget, some basic feelings will arise within you

called affect.

Affect is different from emotion.

It only has two-dimensions: valence and arousal.

You can feel pleasant or unpleasant.

Aroused or unaroused; in other words, calm or agitated.

Things that impact your body budget in a positive way make you feel good.

Things that impact your body budget in a negative way make you feel bad.

Again, this is affect and not emotion.

Affect is a part of being conscious, and the reason we feel it is still a scientific mystery.

You're not born with the knowledge of how to control your body budget.

You begin learning this as a baby.

Our brains construct models of the world, based on our past experiences, that help us

regulate ourselves.

Now, here's a very important point: our models of the world are predictive — not

reactive.

Your brain is governed by prediction -> correction, not stimulus -> response.

According to Barrett and other scientists, prediction is a lot more efficient and adaptive

than reaction.

Your brain doesn't just predict what's happening in the external world — it also

predicts what's going on inside of you.

A brain should make you feel thirsty before you're completely dehydrated; it should

make you feel afraid at the ledge of the cliff, and not when you've already fallen off.

Your past experiences make up your model.

Your model is made to regulate your body budget.

Your model predicts what's going to happen in the world at every moment.

Ideally, if the prediction is wrong, then your brain will update its model.

Based on its prediction, it will modify your body budget and make you feel some affect.

Where does emotion come into this?

Your model of the world is made up of concepts or categories.

This conceptual model is incredibly flexible.

You can combine old concepts to make new concepts.

Even though I've never seen one, I can combine an alligator, with a snake, with a large bird,

with fire to imagine a new creature: a dragon.

Concepts come together based on our goals as individuals.

They are not static things.

For example, let's say that my goal was to hold down a stack of papers.

Now, I have to look for things that can be a paperweight.

Literally anything with a sufficient amount of weight can serve as a paperweight: a rock,

a vase, a computer, a person, so on and so forth.

Dr. Barrett says that emotions are goal-based concepts that we construct based on our past

experiences.

Let's say that someone cuts you off in traffic.

The emotion you construct will depend on what your brain predicts is happening outside of

you, inside of you, and what your goal is.

If you predict that someone tried to hurt you or didn't value your life, your body

budget will change, you'll feel an agitated affect, and you will honk the horn with the

goal of saying, "I MATTER!".

You've constructed the emotion of anger.

However, if you predict that the person is on their way to the hospital, your body budget

will change, you'll stay calm, and you'll slow down with the goal of letting the person

who cut you off travel effectively.

You've constructed the emotion of sympathy or empathy.

In Dr. Barrett's words, "[emotions] are a prescription for action".

Emotions are predictions about how we should act in order to achieve a goal.

These predictions are based on past experiences, and they are concepts that we construct.

There is a lot of variation in the types of emotions we can feel and how they are expressed.

Ultimately, this means that we are responsible for how we construct our conceptual model

of the world because this will control our predictions.

We'll talk about this in a future video.

You might find this idea hard to grasp at first.

It's pretty new and unintuitive.

But, this is a scientific theory with a lot of evidence to support it.

It also has important implications for society.

If you really want a more accurate and detailed understanding of the theory, I highly recommend

reading Dr. Barrett's book on the topic: How Emotions Are Made.

I've put a link in the description.

As always, thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time!

WHERE IS BRAHM ( ब्रह्म )? - Duration: 8:14.

Question by Akansha: Gurujee, I have a question in mind.

What is Brahm (Supreme Cosmic Spirit)?

These days in meditation sessions you are also teaching us Ishavasya Upanishad.

The word it Brahm (Supreme Cosmic Spirit) is repeatedly mentioned in this also.

So what exactly is this Brahm (Supreme Cosmic Spirit, The Ulimate Power ?

Gurujee: The answer of this question was written after thousands of years of research.

If I answer it in that detail then

it will take decades.

I can take its one dimension to explain it.

Our scholars have made this difficult task easy.

But before that, I want to tell you an incident.

In Rishikesh city, I was talking to a religious scholar.

I asked this same question to him.

Whenever we speak of spirituality we encounter two types of people.

First type is of the people who are religious scholar but not spiritual.

Second type is of the people

who are actually spiritual but may or may not be religious scholar.

A person becomes spiritual only by his good deeds. So spirituality is deed oriented.

Spirituality is not just information of sacred texts.

Here I am not using the word 'Knowledge' (gyan) .

The meaning of knowledge is different. So spirituality is not about books,

it is about our conduct and knowledge.

I want to acquaint you with this concept,

because the incident which I will be telling you is related to this so,

the religious scholar was standing 2-3 feet away from me.

You all must have heard arguments like; 'Every human is (Brahm) divine',

'We all are (Brahm) divine',

'Aham Brahmasmi' (I am divine),

'tatvamasi' (You are divine),

'Pragyanam Brahm' (consciousness is divine).

Now before I narrate this incident let me clarify that then I was a kid when this incident happened.

And whatever I did then was totally unintentional.

It was just a child's curiosity.

I asked him this same question,

he replied with many heavy sentences.

He said many shloks (hymns) that went over my head.

So I asked him to explain me in simple manner.

Then he started saying

'That person is divine', 'this person is divine' 'that hand cart labour is divine',

'that man in clothes store is also divine',

'I am divine' ,'you are divine'.

Then suddenly there came a dog itching himself

and without any mischievous thought,

I said 'this itchy dog is also divine'.

Hearing this he got angry on me and

said that I always argue and went away scolding me.

But before leaving, he told me that logic and devotion can't coexist.

And attaining divinity with logic and rationality is not possible.

Saying so, he went away angrily.

Now since he was a senior sanyasi (ascetic),

I took some food for him later to pacify him.

We should never hurt such people.

And he also easily forgave me.

But the question was still there in my mind;

Are only humans a part of that supreme power (Brahm) ?

Are animals and birds not divine?

Next morning I told him that as per his reasoning

the criminals, the policemen and the victims all are divine.

Here one divine(Brahm) is committing a crime,

other divine(Brahm) is chasing the criminal

and the third divine is the victim.

So how it is possible that one divine is the exploiter and other divine is the exploited?

Again he got angry and told me that with logic one can't learn sacred knowledge.

So I came out of the room.

And this thought of mine became more intense

that how can the exploiter and the exploited both be divine.

Also the person who is stopping this exploitation or arresting the exploiter is also divine?

So how this one divine is doing so many activities?

Sometimes this Divine Power is against the moral values

and sometimes it is for the moral values.

This puzzled me for many years but finally I was able to find the answer.

Every living being on this earth has this divinity(Brahm).

But this divinity is away

from our pancha-kosha (5 layers of existence) and is in dormant form.

We all are a small part of the supreme cosmic spirit

and we are functioning due to this energy only.

When this energy leaves our body, we are declared dead.

Body becomes corpse.

It's correct that we are functioning because of this energy.

But only the person who tries to awaken this dormant

form can attain divinity

and not others.

There are two types of life. First is the biological life.

In this whether we try or not, breathing is involuntary.

And when we die then we can't breathe however hard we try.

So this part is the biological life.

And when this breathing becomes a part of spiritual practice

that is voluntary and controlled then it can lead us to divinity.

We can experience being a part of the supreme cosmic spirit.

So the basic difference is that in spiritual life attaining divinity is possible.

And in biological life it is not possible.

In biological life one can achieve materialistic success

and in spiritual life one can achieve divine success.

And this we have to achieve with our actions.

We have to awaken these elements in ourselves through various spiritual practices.

Once we do so, we rise above the level of normal beings

and reach the level of yogi, sanyasi (ascetic), devta.

A bad person and a yogi both are divine

but not same

because the first is living a biological life

while the latter is living a spiritual life.

So when this dormant spirit awakens one becomes divine.

Thus I always say that knowing many shloks (hymns),

mantra, rituals etc can make you a religious scholar

but not necessarily a spiritual person.

After understanding the meaning of Gayatri Mantra

one can become spiritual but Gayatri Mantra itself is not spirituality

unless one understands it and complies by it.

Once we awaken the spirit in ourselves

i.e. when our thoughts become intense and pure then we are truly spiritual.

And then we can witness the divinity in ourselves or else it lies in us in dormant form.

So this divinity is in everybody, in some it is in awaken form and in some in dormant form.

Girl, 7, shot in head in car park next to mum is named - News Live - Duration: 2:14.

This is the first picture of a seven-year-old girl who was shot dead when a man opened fire on her mother's car in a Walmart car park.

Tragic Jazmine Barnes died from her injuries after the shooting on Sunday in Houston, Texas.

Three of Jazmine's sisters were also in the car when the shots were fired at around 7am.

Her mum, LaPorsha Washington, was injured trying to protect her children.

Speaking from her hospital bed, she told ABC13: "He intentionally killed my child for no reason.

"He didn't even know her, he didn't know who she was."

Washington said one of her daughters told her Jazmine had been shot.

"I turned around and my seven-year-old was shot in the head," she said.

Her dad Christopher Cevilla has issued an emotional appeal for Jazmine's killer to come forward.

He told a press conference: "My daughter was seven years old, loving, caring, very passionate with people, very sweet, just an innocent young girl.

"Very smart in school. Just a lot of things that's being robbed of me and my family at this moment that we will never be able to get back."

Writing on a JustGiving page the day of the tragedy, Mr Cevilla wrote: "Today my little girl named Jazmine Barnes was shot and killed.

"Her mother and siblings were also shot at. Unfortunately the life of my 7 yr old little girl was taken selfishly by a unknown suspect.

"I hope and pray for my family to find peace and justice for our loss. I could never imagine the day of losing one of my own children let alone the youngest of my 8 in such a selfish and sensless way.

"I ask that family or friends that are able too please help and find it in yall heart to donate to this go fund me to help with any expenses that our family may need during this tragedy.

"Rest In Heaven Jazmine our beautiful princess we love you and miss you!

What is smart coffee? Elevate Smart Brew! - Duration: 9:55.

heyyo crystal nichols here have you ever wondered what is smart coffee well

hang tight because I am gonna walk you through it and tell about it so what is

smart coffee to answer your question quickly smart coffee is a functional

beverage and that's according to Ella Vasa tea that come into that brings a

smart coffee and so if you don't know what functional beverage like I didn't

know what it was I did a quick Google search and according to Wikipedia it

simply means that a functional beverage is anything you drink intentionally to

get the health benefits out of so if you're drinking an energy drink if you

are drinking vitamin water if you are juicing or anything like that you are

intentionally drinking that to get the health benefits so it's a functional

beverage so the functional part of smart coffee is the no tropics and that's

another word that I'm I wasn't used to so I've done a lot of research on it and

it's been around a while and but in recent years it's been gaining more and

more popularity and that's because no tropics are anything that help improve

your cognitive brain function and that means if you need help focusing if you

need help clearing your brain fog if anything like that that a lot of moms

cognitive brain function what that's a nootropic and so that is the part of the

special blend of this elbows to be elevate smart coffee the company is

if you just have trouble making it through the day with work you know the

kids everything that you have going on in your life you could use no tropics

there are very few side effects and so I did actually did a research testing

group of about 20 women that drank this smart coffee for five days and almost

80% of the women lost at least two pounds now there was one person that had

a slight headache because of the coffee and so you know for someone like that I

say don't don't do it but the overwhelming majority of the women that

used the smart coffee just for five days can't go without it now so they loved it

and another step further with a an

additional supplement called xantham acts and synthamax

as a mom I need that little help sometimes how do you use smart coffee so

bag like this that has 24 sticks individual sticks and that's a serving

size so you can take this with you drop it in your purse it's very handy and

when you're starting off I always recommend starting with half a dose so

that's why I like getting the tub and so you can heart start with half a scoop

which is a single serving I start with half a scoop and work your way up so you

know maybe two or three days till you get to a full dose and this I like the

top too because it contains 30 servings 30 full servings so take your choice

this is an easy thing to put on auto-ship you don't have to but when you

put it on auto-ship I call it my happy happy I call it my

happy coffee subscription box and because it comes once a month I've

almost by the time it comes in the mail I'm almost done with the the tub and I'm

ready for the next so to make smart coffee all you have to do is take your

serving and mix it with six to eight ounces of hot water and that is the most

basic coffee recipe you'll want to dress it up after that the way you typically

do if you are into the keto diet there is a keto coffee creamer

that is made by alla varsity it's in the link below in the description and if you

don't like coffee that's important too if you don't know coffee there is a

product called chocolate so instead of instant coffee it's hot chocolate and so

have your daily hot chocolate get all the benefits of the nut tropics and the

happiness hormones and you're good to go so but the way that I like to enjoy my

smart coffee is to just put it in my protein smoothie

I am I drink two smoothies every day so it's really simple just for me to add a

scoop in and go on with my day and I've had all the caffeine that I need and the

no tropics and all that deliciousness and it's really really good so I highly

recommend you try it please drop me a comment below if you'd like to try it

they the company has a really easy way to try the smart coffee and synthamax

supplement together in six doses for $30 so it's not very much of a commitment if

you just want to try it do that but I suggest just getting full dose if

there's a 30-day money-back guarantee
