I've often thought about the military like, is the military an agent of social

change? And, so, there are a couple - there are lots of ways to look at that, but one

is that the history of the military is that it integrated a long time ago. And

so, even - I'm not suggesting that it's been, you know, all happy and that there's

no racism or sexism or homophobia in the military - but when there's a law that the

military needs to follow they do. And so African Americans were integrated into

the military I think in the '50s, and now LGB and women, and so if you think

about a lot of the sort of social issues that we deal with as social workers - in

the military you should have access to health care. You should have basic

housing and basic living wages. There's child care. So there're all these

ways in which the the DoD is already doing these kind of universal policies

that we're not doing in the community and civilian sectors. The military can

provide educational attainment and training and it can provide, you know,

sort of free access to some of those things that you might not otherwise have.

So we also know that that many folks who joined the military are coming from

lower SES backgrounds and it may be a way to gain, you know, economic and

financial stability and educational attainment.

Box-Office Preview: How 'Venom' and 'A Star Is Born' Will Fare in Domestic Debuts | THR News - Duration: 2:07.

This weekend's box-office showdown will be between Sony's comic book movie

'Venom' and Bradley Cooper's 'A Star Is Born' - potentially making one

of the most interesting starts to the October box-office history.

'Venom' is expected to top the chart with a domestic debut in the $57 million to

$65 million range an October record - while Warner Bros.' 'A Star Is Born' could

cross $30 million or perhaps even more if fans of Lady Gaga turn out in force to see

the Grammy-winner in her feature debut. To date, the record-holder for biggest

October opening is Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity,' which made $55.7 million in 2013,

not adjusted for inflation. In second place is 2015's 'The Martian' with $54.3 million.

'Venom' is a defining moment for Sony as it tries to expand its stable of superhero

films beyond just 'Spider-Man' and make the most of the other Marvel characters

it licenses. The $100 million movie, starring Tom Hardy as the titular antihero, is

the first comic book movie since 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' in early July. The next

superhero offering won't land until December when 'Aquaman' makes its debut.

'Venom' follows investigative journalist Eddie Brock as he comes across a villainous

alien creature, or symbiote, who ends up using his body as a host. Directed by

Ruben Fleischer, 'Venom' co-stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze and

Reid Scott. Marking Cooper's directorial debut, 'A Star Is Born' is the fourth adaptation

of the classic tale of a tortured, hard-drinking celebrity who falls in love with a woman

on the brink of fame. The movie has generated significant buzz, and critical praise,

since making the rounds on the fall festival circuit in hopes of being an awards

contender. Its current Rotten Tomatoes score is 95 percent.

'A Star Is Born' isn't the only film hoping to charm awards voters. Also opening

this weekend, albeit at the specialty box office, is Fox 2000's drama 'The Hate U Give,'

starring Amandla Stenberg as a young girl who witnesses a police shooting and

Zeitgeist's 'Studio 54' - a documentary about the iconic New York City nightclub

Studio 54, which was synonymous with the rise and fall of disco.

Both films currently boast a 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
