CITY, ACCUSED IN THE WORST
ATTACK ON FEWISH PEOPLE IN --
JEWISH PEOPLE IN AMERICAN
HISTORY.
AN ARM POLICE ESCORT BROUGHT
ROBERT BOWERS TO HIS FIRST COURT
APPEARANCE TODAY.
THE 46-YEAR-OLD ARRIVED SHACKLED
TO A WHEELCHAIR AFTER BEING
RELEASED IN HOSPITAL.
HE'S FACING 29 FEDERAL COUNTS
INCLUDING HATE CRIMES.
>> THE JUDGE ADVISED HIM OF THE
CHARGES AGAINST HIM.
HE IS DETAINED IN JAIL WITHOUT

>> PROSECUTORS ALSO TOOK THE
FIRST STEPS TODAY TOWARDS
SEEKING THE DEATH PENALTY
AGAINST BOWERS.
BUT AS PAUL HUNTER REPORTS,
THAT'S SMALL COMFORT TO A CITY
STRUGGLING WITH GRIEF AND FEAR.
>> Reporter: THEY TURN OUT ONE

THERE WILL BE MORE TO FOLLOW

ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE
SUSPECT AFTER HE WAS SHOT?
>> Reporter: WE WERE TALKING
ABOUT HOW HE WAS UNDER GUARD IN
THE POLICE SHOOT-OUT THAT ENDED
THE CAMPAIGN.
IT TURNS OUT, EVEN AS HE WAS
SHOOTING KILL ALL THE JEWS, THE
FIRST THREE HOSPITAL STAFFERS TO
TREAT HIM WERE JEWISH.
THEY DID IT WITHOUT QUESTION,
JUST DOING THEIR JOB, TAKING
CARE OF SICK PEOPLE, EVEN HIM.
>> Andrew: CBC'S PAUL HUNTER IN

HE WAS A TARGET IN LAST WEEK'S

HE SAYS UNKNOWN MIDDLE

>> THERE IS NO PROOF OF

THERE'S NO PROOF OF ANYTHING.
>> Reporter: THAT'S WHAT WORRIES
SO MANY IN THIS COUNTRY, THAT
FACTS DON'T MATTER.
HATRED CAN GET A FREE PASS.
>> ELLEN JOINS US FROM
WASHINGTON.
YOU MENTIONED THE CARAVAN.
WHAT IS TRUMP'S LATEST MOVE ON
THAT.
>> Reporter: WELL, IT WAS
ANNOUNCED TONIGHT THAT PRESIDENT
TRUMP HAS ORDERED SOME 5200
TROOPS TO THE NEXT CAN BORDER --
MEXICAN BORDER BY THE END OF THE
WEEK.
IT'S CALLED OPERATION FAITHFUL
PATRIOT.
THE WITHOUT SAYS IT'S ABOUT
SECURING THE -- ABOUT SECURING
THE BORDER.
THE CARAVAN IS STILL 1500
KILOMETRES AWAY FROM THE UNITED
STATES.
IT WILL NOT ARRIVE AT THE BORDER
FOR WEEKS AT THE EARLIEST.
IT WILL LIKELY BE MUCH SMALLER
IN NUMBER BY THE TIME IT DOES.
SO FOR THOSE REASONS, THIS IS
BEING SEEN AS MORE OF AN
ELECTION STRATEGY, ANDREW, TO
RILE UP, TO PLEASE THE BASE
BEFORE NEXT WEEK'S MIDTERMS.
>> Andrew: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> Reporter: YOU'RE WELCOME.
>>> IF YOU ASK PEOPLE WHO

POISONOUS PUBLIC DISCOURSE.
>> I THINK OUR POLARIZED
ENVIRONMENT, WE SEE PEOPLE, YOU

TOXICITY INTO THE POLITICAL
CONVERSATIONS WE'VE JUST NEVER
SEEN BEFORE.
>> LAST YEAR IN THE U.S., THE
NUMBER OF ANTI-SEMITIC INCIDENTS
INCREASED BY 57% COMPARED TO THE
YEAR BEFORE.
THAT'S THE BIGGEST JUMP SINCE
THIS DATA WAS FIRST COLLECTED IN
1979.
AND WHEN DONALD TRUMP RESPONDED
TO THE PITTSBURGH MASS SHOOTING,
HE SUGGESTED THE ANSWER TO
DEADLY VIOLENCE WAS MORE GUNS.
>> IF THEY HAD PROTECTION
INSIDE, THE RESULTS WOULD HAVE
BEEN FAR BETTER.
>> ARMED SECURITY IS NOT LEGAL
IN CANADA'S HOUSES OF WORSHIP.
STILL, ANTE SEMITIC CRIMES ROSE
BY 24% EVEN AS CRIMES TARGETING
MUSLIMS AND CATHOLICS DECLINED.
>>> SOME SYNAGOGUES USE SECURITY
GUARDS.
WE ASKED MICHAEL TO JOIN US.
YOU'RE WITH THE CONGREGATION
HERE IN ENTER TO.
THANKS FOR JOINING US.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN FOR US WHAT THE
SECURITY SITUATION IS AT YOUR
SYNAGOGUE?
>> IN OUR SYNAGOGUE, WE HAVE
PAID SECURITY ON SITE ANY TIME
THE BUILDING IS OPEN AND WE'RE
EXPECTING THE COMMUNITY OR
MEMBERS TO BE PRESENT FOR AN
EVENT.
>> AND I UNDERSTAND THAT FOR
MAJOR MILESTONES, SPECIAL
EVENTS, YOU HIRE POLICE TO BE
THERE.
>> CORRECT, FOR SPECIAL LIFE
CYCLE EVENTS AS WELL AS FOR OUR
HIGH HOLY DAYS IN THE FALL.
WE TRY TO HAVE AN EVEN GREATER
SECURITY PRESENCE.
>> AND SO WHY DID YOU FEEL THE
NEED TO HAVE THESE LAYERS OF
SECURITY?
>> HIRING OF SECURITY GUARDS
BEGAN AT OUR SYNAGOGUE WITH
9-11.
BEFORE THEN IT WAS COMMON FOR US
TO BE OPEN AND NOT HAVE A FORMAL
SECURITY PRESENCE.
BUT SINCE THAT TIME, WE FOUND
THE NEED NOT NEARLY IN RESPONSE
TO WORLD SHATTERING EVENTS SUCH
AS THIS OR THE HORRIBLE
ANTI-SEMITIC CRIME IN
PITTSBURGH, BUT FOR THE LARGER
ATMOSPHERE WHERE ANTI-SEMITISM
IS PRESENT.
IT'S ON THE RICE.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT
COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THOSE WHO
PARTICIPATE IN OUR TRADITIONS
AND SERVICES FEEL SAFE AND
SECURE WHEN THEY COME TO BE WITH
THEIR COMMUNITY.
>> BUT WHAT IS IT LIKE FOR THOSE
COMMUNITY MEMBERS?
I MEAN, TO HAVE PAID SECURITY AT
THE DOORS ALL THE TIME?
>> SADLY, IT'S SOMETHING WE'VE
ALREADY BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO,
THAT IT'S SUCH A PART OF OUR
LIFE EVERY DAY THAT WE NEED --
PEOPLE FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE
SEEING A SECURITY PERSON THAN
BEING CONCERNED THAT NO ONE IS
PRESENT AND THE DOOR IS WIDE
OPEN.
>> YOU KNOW, I'M CURIOUS BECAUSE
I STILL WONDER IF, IN HIRING
PAID SECURITY TO BE AT THE
SYNAGOGUE AT ALL TIMES WHEN
THESE DOORS ARE OPEN, WHETHER
YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'VE GIVEN
SOMETHING UP, THAT, PERHAPS,
YOU'VE PAID A STEEPER COST THAN
SIMPLY THE COST OF HIRING
SECURITY.
>> I REMEMBER WHEN WE FIRST DID
IT.
WE'VE HAD TO MAKE DIFFICULT
DECISIONS.
THERE WERE THOSE WHO URGED US TO
HAVE CAMERAS AT THE DOORS AND TO
BUZZ IN EVERY INDIVIDUAL.
WE DECIDED AT OUR SYNAGOGUE THAT
WE WEREN'T WILLING TO GIVE UP ON
THAT PERSON TO PERSON CONTACT,
THAT PEOPLE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO
FEEL LIKE THEY'RE ENTERING A
FORTRESS WHEN THEY ENTER.
SO WE DID HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS
ABOUT HOW MUCH WE WERE WILLING
TO GIVE UP IN ORDER TO PROVIDE
OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH THAT
FEELING OF SECURITY THEY SO RICH
LEE DESERVE.
>> OKAY.
WE'LL LEAVE IT THERE.
IT WAS GOOD TO TALK TO YOU.
>> PLEASURE TO BE WITH YOU.
>>> AND ONE LAST NOTE ON THIS
STORY.

>> HE'S BEEN INVOLVED IN
POLITICS SINCE HE WAS 15.
HE DESCRIBES HIMSELF AS AN
EISENHOWER REPUBLICAN MEANING
HE'S TO THE LEFT OF TODAY'S
REPUBLICAN PARTY.
>> HE WORKS BOTH SIDES OF THE
AISLE AND MODERATE IN HIS
CHARACTER.
HE'S A 4th GENERATION
MONTANAN.
HE'S THE LAST ACTIVE FARMER LEFT
IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE.
>> HIS ATTITUDE TOWARD TRUMP IS
SOMEWHAT MORE COMPLICATED.
>> EVERY DAY THAT GOES BY, I
FEEL A LITTLE BETTER AND LESS
RESPECT FOR HIM THAN THE DAY
BEFORE.
>> Reporter: YOU FEEL A
LITTLE -- I'M SORRY.
DID YOU SAY YOU FEEL BATTERED OR
BETTER?
>> BATTERED IS PROBABLY THE GOOD
WORD.
SAD IS THE WORD.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS.
ONE THING YOU CAN SAY FOR HIM IS
HE'S KEPT PROMISES THAT HE MADE.
I'M NOT SURE THAT'S ALL GOOD.
I JUST -- WHAT I THINK IS, IT'S
A SAD COMMENTARY ON THE STATE OF
THE UNION THAT THIS IS WHAT WE
HAVE FOR A PRESIDENT OF THE
UNITED STATES, BUT IT'S BETTER
THAN WHAT WE WOULD HAVE HAD.
[*]
>> Reporter: IN THE FINAL WEEKS
OF THE CAMPAIGN, REPUBLICANS GOT

VOTERS, YOUNGER VOTERS, PARENTS
SAID FOR GOD'S SAKE, I DON'T
WANT MY 10-YEAR-OLD TO LEARN
ABOUT ORAL SEX ON THE NIGHTLY
NEWS.
GET THAT STUFF OFF OF THERE.
DON'T TALK ABOUT IT.
AND THE REPUBLICANS WOULD KEEP
FOCUSING ON IT.
>> THINGS WERE HAPPENING OUT
WILL THERE THAT NONE OF US FULLY
UNDERSTOOD.
>> REPUBLICANS LOST SEATS IN THE
HOUSE THAT YEAR, AND ALMOST
UNHEARD OF RESULTS IN THE SIXTH
YEAR OF A PRESIDENT FOR THE
OPPOSITE PARTY.
>> I THINK PEOPLE LOOKED AT THE
KAVANAUGH HEARINGS AND THEY SAW
AN ANGRY, HOSTILE, AGGRESSIVE
RIGHTEOUS DEMOCRATIC AUTHORITY
THEY DIDN'T LIKE.
THEY SAW IT AS BEING VERY MUCH
OVERREACHING WITH NO REAL
EVIDENCE TO BACK IT UP.
I THINK THAT TRIGGERED A
BACKLASH THAT I THINK MAY
ANIMATE THE TURNOUT OF THE
REPUBLICAN VOTERS AND GIVE TRUMP
THE VICTORY IN THE ELECTION.
[*]
>> Reporter: MONTANA HAS TOO
MUCH OPEN SPACE TO BE A BIG
PLAYER IN NATIONAL POLITICS, SO
IT'S PARTLY A MEASURE OF HOW
IMPORTANT A SINGLE SENATE SEAT
IS TO REPUBLICANS THAT TRUMP HAS
VISITED HERE AS OFTEN AS HE HAS.

WHAT MAY NOT BE IS THE IMPORTING
OF THE ANGRY POLITICAL RHETORIC.
WITH OUR PANEL OF TWO PROMINENT

DEMOCRATS, WE'LL LOOK AT THEIR
ADVICE ON HOW TO STAVE OFF THE
WORST OF IT AND WE'LL CHECK IN

WHERE DO YOU GO FROM THERE?
NEXT ON "THE NATIONAL," OUR
MOMENT IN PITTSBURGH, THE
HOPERS, THE HELPERS, THE DOERS.
HOW PEOPLE ACROSS THE COMMUNITY
ARE REACHING OUT TO OTHERS.
>> THERE WAS NOTHING THAT I HAD
REALLY INTENDED TO SHARE BROADLY
ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE.

UP PUBLIC AND SHARE IT THAT IT
THEN STARTED TO SNOWBALL
>>> PITTSBURGH TO TRYING TO HEAL
AFTER START'S DEADLY SHOOTING.
TO SHOW THAT IT IS STRONGER THAN
HATE.
HOW YOU DO THAT IS DIFFERENT
DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK.
FOR SOME, IT'S ABOUT LINING UP
TO DONATE BLOOD TO HELP THE
VICTIMS.
FOR OTHERS, IT'S HANDING OUT
FLOWERS AND HUGS TO COMPLETE
STRANGERS JUST BECAUSE.
AND FOR FAITH LEADERS, IT'S
ABOUT COMING TOGETHER IN
SOLIDARITY WITH THE JEWISH
COMMUNITY, JUST LIKE THE MUSLIM
COMMUNITY OF PITTSBURGH RAISING
OVER $70,000 FOR THE VICTIMS AND
THEIR FAMILIES AND STILL
PREPARED TO DO MORE.
>> IF IT'S PEOPLE OUTSIDE YOUR

>> AND FOR TIM HEINZ, IT WAS
ABOUT CREATING AN IMAGE WITH A

HE HADN'T MEANT TO MAKE IT
PUBLIC AT FIRST, BUT IT SINCE
HAS BECOME A SYMBOL FOR THE
AFTERMATH OF THAT SHOOTING IN
PITTSBURGH AND THAT'S OUR
MOMENT.
>> REALLY JUST STARTED DOODLING
ON MY COMPUTER.
IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS
FUELLED BY EMOTION.
THE BASIC IMAGE ITSELF IS FROM
THE LOGO FOR STEEL, WHICH
EVERYONE KNOWS IS A BIG PART OF
PITTSBURGH'S HISTORY.
EVEN BEFORE THEY HAD A FOOTBALL
TEAM THAT USED THE LOGO, IT'S A
FABRIC.
WE DON'T BREAK EASILY.
THAT WAS A STRONG METAPHOR THAT
WAS EVIDENT IN THE FINAL DESIGN.
I THINK, OBVIOUSLY, IT WAS
IMPORTANT TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE
VICTIMS AND THE JEWISH
COMMUNITY, WHICH IS SO VIBRANT
WITHIN THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH.
THEN I WANTED TO -- AS FAR AS
THE WORDS, STRONGER THAN HATE, I
WANTED IT ALSO TO BE A RALLYING
CRY FOR THOSE THAT SAW IT.
EVERY TIME IT'S USED, EVERY TIME
IT'S SHARED AS AN ACT OF LOVE.
AND IT COUNTERS THE ACT WHICH
INSPIRED IT.
TO ME, THAT'S A WIN.
>> YOU KNOW, JUST ON THAT LAST
POINT, I MEAN, TIM SAYS PEOPLE
FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD HAVE
ASKED THEM, CAN I USE YOUR

SHOULD I CREDIT YOU?

YES, OF COURSE, YOU CAN USE IT.
THIS IS FOR PITTSBURGH AND THIS
IS FOR EVERYONE WHO LOVES
PITTSBURGH.

SOMETHING FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
>> Ian: YOU HAVE TO THINK AN
ATTACK COULD MAKE A COMMUNITY,
IN THIS CASE, THE JEWISH
COMMUNITY IN PITTSBURGH, FEEL
LIKE IT'S ALONE WONDERING IF THE
REST OF THE COMMUNITY IS
REACHING OUT.
WE SAW LOTS OF EXAMPLES OF THAT.
WHAT COULD BE MORE OF A SIGN OF
COMMUNITY UNITY AND SUPPORT
OTHER THAN STEEL, THE STEELERS,
THE BELOVED HOME TEAM NFL SQUAD.
MIKE TOMLIN LIVES WITH A
KILOMETRE AWAY FROM THE
SYNAGOGUE.
REMEMBER THE FRONT OFFICE HAS A
