What do I do?
A stretch here, a massage there
can make our muscles feel better
but what happens when the problem's with our pus?

I'm Madge the Vag
and today we're taking our vaginas to the therapist.
Ow.
Physical therapy, what do you think of
when you think of physical therapy?
- Hmm, rehabilitation for muscles.
- We could go get your back massaged.
- Why not your vagina?
- Did you know that there's vagina physical therapy?
- No, I did not know that exists.
- Oh yeah!
We're here with Amy Stein.
Amy, you're a physical therapist.
- Yes.
- Okay, well I'm Madge the Vag.
I am not Madge the Ankle.
What the heck am I doing here?
- We treat pelvic floor issues,
so the vaginal area is surrounded by muscle tissue,
there's a bony alignment going on back there.
- [Madge] So when I come in here, what can I expect?
Am I gonna be laying on my back, like in the stirrups
looking at a painting on the ceiling
like I do when I go to the gyno?
- A little more than that.
We look at the muscles and tissues externally
and then, with consent,
we look at the muscles internally as well.
- So I once broke my wrist, I won't say how,
and then afterwards I had to go to a therapist
to just train it to be okay again.
Is that kind of what we're talking about?
Like you have a baby, you broke your whole vagina.
- We help a lot with the prenatal pain that's going on.
- [Madge] Okay.
- And then the postpartum, if you have
episiotomy or any tearing,
ideally again, seeing patients sooner rather than later
'cause if there's scar tissue
we can help work out the scar tissue.
- So this is kind of like having a vagina masseuse.
You know, I have been peeing ever since I had my kiddo.
I just did it again.
So what would you do for that?
Are these Kegels working?
'Cause I'm squeezing away and it's just not
doing a darn thing.
- If your alignment is off,
then the muscles may not work as best as they can.
They may not function optimally.
So when you're doing the Kegels,
they may not be really
contracting and relaxing as they should.
There are many different home options that you could do.
So I teach the patient just to go
from origin of where the muscles are
to the insertion.
They could go on the side.
- Hmm, it's like a rolling pin for your thighs.
- It is, and it actually feels really good.
You could go on the outside
and you could also go on the inside.
- [Madge] Could I do it on dough when I'm cooking?
Would that work?
Ooh, feels good.
- Another option for home that I recommend patients to do
is to get a pinky ball, but a firm pinky ball
and do various areas of the body that have tightness.
And you put your body weight on it.
You can find different areas, so if you want,
you could take the ball and you can move it up,
you can move it down.
- It's like a butt massage.
- Yeah, if you do have pain with endometriosis,
cramping, any type of abdominal discomfort,
you take a ball and you very gently
can go along the muscle,
and you also have your intestines in there,
so do do it gently.
You can go all around the abdominal wall.
If you have a C-section scar,
this can help so that if the muscles
are pulling from the scarring,
this can actually help to loosen the muscles
around that area.
So let me have you try that.
You could either hold it down if you find a tender spot
or you can move it gently in circular motions.
- This is feeling nice.
It's like a tiny basketball for my belly.
I just love exercise and massages
and now my vagina can enjoy them too!
Isn't life grand?
Just remember, if you go to a physical therapist,
make sure they're certified, knowledgeable,
and make you feel comfortable.
