Autodesk sketchbook was recently made free for individual licenses on iOS and Android.
Pro tools and features are now all integrated in the new free version.
It does require an Autodesk account to use it for more than 7 days though.
It works on iPhone, iPads, Android, and Windows tablets.
It can get a bit weird to get used to, but there's a lot this app can do.
Though for canvas size, you can edit that at the start,
but from what I've searched online, it can't crop.
Things you can do is tweak how much lines are corrected,
transform and move selections heavily,
use symmetry tools like ones shown here,
use built-in shapes and lines like circles and squares and other things,
there's rulers in here too like for circles and (straight) lines as well.
There's a fill option where you can fill things in with flat colors or gradients.
The quick menu you can access at the bottom of the screen
makes things like changing the colors of the gradients or tools pretty easy.
Theres a bunch of brushes and texture effects.
The brushes can be tweaked a ton,
especially for devices with styluses or the ones with the 3d touch feature
like in iphone 6s and up that the app can simulate pen pressure
even with your finger if it has the 3d touch feature
and there's options for the app to change the behavior of the brushes with that, along with other aspects.
Of course there are layers and (layer) modes.
You can use the eye dropper tool from the quick menu by dragging the circle to select the color.
Can easily change the brushes as well, pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
Text-making is very decent and can be used for most simple artistic needs.
You can flip the text, change the color, and things like that.
Importing pictures and timelapse recording are simple options here as well.
I used the built-in timelapse feature to record my Tomie doodle
while trying to figure out how to use the app.
I did a sketch first with the pencil brush on the bottom layer
and made a new layer for the inks that'll be the basis for the painting.
Took me a while to understand how to fit my workflow with this app,
I hadn't used it before on mobile.
I figured out that flipping the canvas was an available option
instead of flipping the lines and layers individually like you'll see in a bit,
cuz i didn't understand where the flip canvas option was.
Apparently, it was in the quick menu that's available at the bottom of the screen, like a lot of options are.
The rest of this is just a matter of switching brushes, colors, using the eyedropper tool,
merging layers, and blending with one of the brushes.
Occasionally flipping the canvas after I figured out how to do it.
I'll leave the rest of this timelapse without voice-over
and then I'll come back for the summary of my first impressions at the end.
The app seems cool and I'll be using it again,
the only downfall so far is that it doesn't have a crop feature and you require an account for it.
Otherwise, it's pretty robust and pretty cool so far.
I would recommend it, it's free and especially if you have the 3d touch feature, come and use it.
it's a pretty inexpensive way of making art on mobile.
