EP066: The Red Thread of "A Diamond Is Forever" - Duration: 7:34.

- How many of you out there are married,

have been married, or engaged?

And of you, for how many of you

was a diamond part of the deal?

Have you ever asked yourself, why a diamond?

And who told you to buy one?

Well, the answer comes to one of the most perfect

Red Threads that's out there.

I'm Tamsen Webster of tamsenwebster.com

and that's what we're talking about this week

on Find the Red Thread.

(playful upbeat music)

So why did you buy a diamond, or want to receive one?

Because you, I'm going to guess, wanted to give or receive

a symbol of the commitment you we're about to make.

And because there was this idea out there

that "a diamond is forever."

Suddenly, it meant that not just any ring would do.

It had to be a specific kind of ring.

And since you wanted the commitment to be forever,

you wanted a diamond ring.

So there we go.

I have a Goal, a Problem, an Idea,

and all of a sudden, without any force

from an outside company, except for a little tiny tag line,

"a diamond is forever," I've thought, you've thought,

the world has thought differently about diamonds,

and diamond engagement rings ever since.

And if you listened carefully there,

you would have heard the Red Thread behind it.

So let's back up a little bit.

So in the early 1930s, De Beers, the diamond company,

had a worldwide monopoly on diamonds, they still do.

And that worldwide monopoly on diamonds

meant that they could create a tension

around the supply of diamonds.

And that meant that that limited supply

is one of the ways where they could

create value around diamonds.

'Cause I hate to break it to you

but diamonds, in and of themselves,

don't have a lot of intrinsic value.

If you've ever tried to resell a diamond,

you'll know what I mean.

They don't want you to resell a diamond,

because when you resell a diamond,

then you are kind of keeping a diamond in circulation.

They don't want that.

So, if they could only limit the value

of diamonds so much by supply, well then,

being good economists, they realized that they could

affect the value of diamonds by affecting demand.

So how do they do that?

How do they create a permanent shift in thinking

or behavior around buying diamond rings,

when it wouldn't be very hard for people

to discover that diamonds really aren't

that valuable in and of themselves?

Okay, well this is important for us to know

because a lot of times when we're trying to put

an idea out there, we're not sure that there's

a lot to build it on either right?

But we're still trying to create

that permanent change in thinking or behavior.

So if we reconstruct a Red Thread behind that change,

we can start to see another example out in the wild

of how a Red Thread can be used to create that change

in thinking and behavior that we're looking for.

So let's think about that.

Now, what was the Goal of people

wanting to get an engagement ring?

Well, I think it's pretty simple.

They wanted to give a symbol of their commitment.

Now, the ring itself is a powerful symbol.

There's references in the Bible even

to why the ring is a beautiful and perfect symbol

of the unending quality of somebody's love

for somebody else.

But, De Beers wanted to make sure that they weren't

just dealing with any kind of ring.

They wanted people to really think

about a specific kind of ring.

So, after the Goal is this Problem of Perspective,

this perspective they needed to shift,

that it wasn't just the ring that mattered,

it was the kind of ring that mattered.

So how could they create the tension on that perspective?

Well, by introducing an Idea that made it

impossible to ignore the kind of ring.

And that idea came in the form

of that brilliant tagline from 1947, "a diamond is forever."

Now, the reason why that as a tagline is so brilliant

is because they're not telling anybody to buy diamond rings,

they're introducing an idea that makes it impossible

to ignore your previous perspective.

Because if you agree that "a diamond is forever,"

and like any good Idea Statement,

it's pretty hard to disagree with that on its surface,

then it's going to be really hard for you to ignore

that if you're trying to give a symbol

that encapsulates your commitment to somebody else,

but say, "no I don't want the forever one," right?

That's why it's so brilliant.

Because that goal, plus that perspective,

plus that idea, made it so that people

had to think differently about the kind of rings

they gave to each other.

And that meant that starting in about 1947,

diamonds took over as the engagement ring to give.

Now what's the lesson here for you?

Well, the lesson here for you is multi-pronged.

First, how powerful it can be to get a market

to come to its own conclusion.

Second part is understand that getting a market

to come to its own conclusion, comes from getting

individual people to come to that conclusion.

We have to change individual minds.

And the third takeaway from this is that those pieces

of the Red Thread can work, at both the individual level,

and the market level.

And De Beers, and "a diamond is forever,"

is a perfect example of all of that.

That's this week's episode of Find the Red Thread.

I'm Tamsen Webster of tamsenwebster.com.

If stories like this, and information like this

would be helpful to you, your team, or your company,

I do a lot of speaking, I also conduct workshops on these.

or a shout out, or a contact in my contact form.

When you have a great idea,

one that you think will be irresistible to other people,

you know you need to spend some time with it, right?

You need to focus on it, get some one-on-one attention.

But you also want to make sure that you

get the opinion of other people,

and you want to make sure you actually do the work.

Well, that is exactly what the Red Thread Weekend

will do for you.

What we try to do in the Red Thread Weekend

is focus on you and your idea.

In a small group setting, never more than eight people,

we work with you on your idea, one-on-one,

in front of the group.

So you get not only that focused attention you want,

but the opinion of other people that you need.

You'll walk out not only with a crystal clear understanding

of your idea, and just how big it is,

but also, all the tools you need to sell it to other people,

to talk about it to other people,

and even to start outlining the talk itself.

I hope I will see you at an upcoming Red Thread Weekend.

Dobbs: "Why Singapore is a great location for Trump's meeting with Kim Jung Un - Duration: 13:59.

our first guest tonight joining us to discuss the systemic corruption within

the Justice Department and the FBI and the boiling political cauldron at the

epicenter of the DC swamp Congressman Matt Gaetz

he serves on a number of key committees including judiciary budget and armed

services great to have you with us good to be here your thoughts on what is

happening right now it all seems to be moving to if you will forgive the

metaphor a boil right now in Washington whether it is in the house whether it's

in the White House I never would have believed we would be getting reports

about potential human intelligence being collected on a rival presidential

campaign I never would have thought we would have had Justice Department

officials attacking a staff member who has worked so hard with our office and

many other offices to expose the corruption and the crimes of the deep

state but Lou I would have never thought that cash at the Democratic National

Committee would ultimately be converted into a warrant to spy on American

citizens and so we live in these very rare and unusual times where the

bureaucrats at the FBI and Department of Justice believed that the Congress the

elected representatives of the people answer to them rather than the other way

around and and answer they will one way or the

other come this fall but interestingly Paul Ryan doesn't seem to be concerned

in their conference has allowed Paul Ryan to resign the speakership but

retain leadership of the conference and a whole great sway over the likely

outcome for each member who's running for election this year well I think that

we've got to be a lot stronger in making demands because if we don't and we lose

the house because we've not demonstrated sufficient vigor and our oversight

responsibilities the Democrats will I mean Lou we know how the Democrats play

this game what they'll do is they'll start demanding documents and if those

documents don't show up they'll start the impeachment proceedings whereas

we've engaged in this protracted negotiation over what we have a

constitutional obligation to do and that's demand answers from the executive

branch sohe why is the conference staying with

a weak-kneed obviously unimaginative and ineffective speaker who cannot drive an

agenda or prepare the conference for those midterm elections well I think

that we've got a number of members who are very concerned over the increased

Democrat intensity that we've seen I do have to note though Lou we've been

successful in making some of our key arguments to the public six months ago

only 44% of Americans believed that the Muller probe was politically motivated

today that number is over half to 53% of Americans according to CBS that believe

that Muller's probe is politically motivated so as much as I'd love to give

you credit for that it is President Trump who day in and day out is

attacking fake news attacking the Muller witch-hunt

I don't here Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell saying a single dog we always

are encouraging them to be more supportive of our efforts but look

members of Congress have been conducting a lot of these investigations and

uncovering a lot of these truths and look at the consequence Jim Comey fired

deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe fired and referred for

criminal prosecution counterintelligence chief Peter struck demoted and

reassigned his girlfriend Lisa Paige gone leaker James Baker the counsel for

the FBI gone so time and again were taking bites

out of the deep state but I think you're right

institutionally the Congress has got to be stronger now otherwise Nancy Pelosi

will get the speaker gavel let me be clear we give on this broadcast evident

as the chair of the House Intelligence Committee the the heroes positioned

within the pantheon it's a small Pantheon in Washington DC right now but

there are so many congressmen with guts like you in principle who are doing a

lot but Nunez has been outstanding but Paul Ryan has not stood tall he has not

stood loudly in support of this president or against the Department of

Justice and the FBI he is weak-kneed he is a trembling

figure and the in the twilight of his tenure as Speaker how much can the

Republican Party stand from this man and we hear there's a discharge petition on

its way in which he is basically trying to pretend make it look as though he's

been carried across the finish line to amnesty which

has been his goal for years and years and years without a quid pro quo well

I'll take some exceptions in the notion look a discharge petition would

absolutely lead to amnesty the discharge petition says we're gonna take a vote on

everybody's immigration bill the Conservatives have the Goodlatte

immigration bill that ends chain migration that instills e-verify into

our system that builds the wall all the things that we care about and takes care

of daca but does it in a conservative way the Democrats can have their

proposals the liberal Republicans can have their proposals but you know what

I'm sick of I'm sick of not taking votes I'm sick of debating immigration and

talking about it but not doing anything about it this president ran on an

immigration agenda and it's time that we deliver for him as a Congress I I think

it's wonderful that you would deliver for but I'm right now more concerned

about delivering for the American people because right now daca is amnesty and

daca amnesty without quid pro quo without any condition the good lock bill

good lot hasn't been he's been absent in abstention for out his throughout his

tenure as chairman of judiciary I know you can't remark on that but I can't the

reality is that we have a president who is right at the threshold of securing

every major policy victory and it looks as though the globalist forces are

circling and are moving in to suppress what should be a moment of exhilarating

victory for this president and for the nation it should be and frankly if we

were 10 percent as effective as the Congress as this president was we would

have done so much more to advance his agenda alone the president has reduced

illegal border crossings by about 40 percent so if we would do the things

he's called for ending chain migration doing Iver off' I making sure that

people are working in this country legally but I really think this is a

solvable problem the Democrats want you to believe or he

really can't solve it but we can now I agree with you 100% and this president

has demonstrated that you can solve much of it again the threat against America

first his his policies his doctrine is all too real tonight and we appreciate

you being here thank you as always thank you very much

President Trump last night touting the successful return of three Americans

held captive in North Korea but those hostages came out with respect we didn't

pay for them they came out for nothing and the others came out for 1.8 billion

in cash can you believe what it is a stark contrasts mind you from the Obama

administration's policy of paying for the return of US citizens in 2011

President Obama paid 1.5 million for three American hikers held in Iran 2014

he swapped five Taliban terrorists for private Bowe Bergdahl and in 2016 he

spent nearly 1.8 billion in cash as the president mentioned for Iran to Iran for

five Americans in advance of the disastrous Iran deal joining me now to

talk about at Gordon Chang Daily Beast's contributor author of nuclear showdown

North Korea takes on the world Gordon great to see you it could have sworn it

was a long-standing stating stated policy of the American government not to

pay ransom to terrorists or terrorist nations but Obama did it anyway well

sure and clearly the point here is that we're just giving incentives to the

Iranians North Koreans and others to just grab more Americans you know this

policy has been violated so many times in the past we really need to stop it

and it is progress that we did get the three Kim's out of North Korea and we

didn't pay a cent to Kim jong-un that's real progress yet Chuck I'd walk him out

for a camera Schumer was on the Senate floor condemning the president for

saying a simple thanks to Kim jong-un for releasing them is that just

incredibly naive if not dumb I mean what did he expect the President to do insult

Kim jong-un and threaten a historic summit to denuclearize the Korean

Peninsula yeah the important point here as you suggest is that you don't want to

insult Kim jong-un on the eve of the meeting

in Singapore June 12 you know I might not have said excellent but nonetheless

I think what President Trump is trying to do is to sort of butter up Kim

jong-un sure and if we can get them to disarm to give up their nukes and

ballistic missiles return the Japanese abductees and do a few other things for

a one-word adjective of excellent right well then I'm all for it yeah tell him

tell him he's got a nice-looking suit and a good haircut I mean yeah we'll lie

to him and gee you look thinner these days so let's talk about the upcoming

summit in Singapore why Singapore is that a good idea

yeah Singapore is a very good idea I think there's only one place on earth

that would be better and that would be Mauro Lago I actually liked Mongolia but

the thing about Singapore is important is that it's not going to be in China

because the Chinese want to claw their way back into the denuclearization

process and they've been a malign influence and also it's not in the

Demilitarized Zone and that would be on the doorstep of North Korea as president

Trump's senior advisors have said and it would feed the euphoria continue the

euphoria that South Koreans have over unification on the surface that's not

bad but when you start thinking about what moon jaein the South Korean

president wants to do who's feeding that euphoria it's actually undercutting the

efforts of the international community to disarm Kim so Singapore is a great

place to hold the talks with the North Koreans all right look you are the

expert on North Korea written books about it you've lectured on it we turn

to you whenever the subject comes up so here's the money question how do you

handicap Trump's success at the summit I'm actually quite optimistic I'm gonna

go out on a limb and the reason is that this is not a Kim question this is a

question of whether President Trump will use the elements of American power to

protect US and the international community I actually think he will do it

you know on Tuesday he abrogated the Iran deal he set himself a very high bar

for success in North Korea so you know if he were willing to just sort of

accept any old deal from North Korea which has happened too often in the past

then he would not have gone out of Iran so I think that that's a

sign that President Trump is actually going to hold the North Koreans to those

big promises of giving up their nuclear weapons which Kim made on April 27th to

the South Korean president it seems that what he wants on the table from the

United States is is palatable you know let's have an armistice or a treaty

actually from the old Korean War and just promise you're not going to attack

us that's doable isn't it yeah that is what Kim told moon jae-in

on April 27th during their summit you know if we had gotten to that point

after five years of hard negotiations we would have declared victory you know but

we're getting that before you know shrimp Trump and and Kim meat and that's

an indication no I I think Kim doesn't really want to do that but the point is

Kim is now created and marker president Trump can hold them to that and that

gives us a substantial up in the talks even before they begin so I'm actually

very happy about that and I think that President Trump will use that to make

sure Kim it doesn't doesn't play us all right so assuming for the moment he's

not playing us what changed I mean it was a guy was firing missiles all over

the place developing nuclear weapons and he has some nuclear weapons and and his

belligerence is all of a sudden been replaced by conciliation well a couple

things have changed one of the most US and UN sanctions also you know we got to

remember that Asia Korea watchers and and clearly someone andrei lanka who is

considered to be the leading Korean expert in the world actually said this

is because the North Koreans the Chinese and the South Koreans were afraid of war

in the peninsula and so therefore that you all changed their policies

dramatically towards the end of last year which means that Kim now fails he

needs to come to terms with the United States so you know that's the threats

that's a little rocket man fire and fury all the other comments that I didn't

like then but they seem to have worked and it's not just us it's it's people in

in who don't necessarily like Trump but who

are crediting Trump's policies in this regressive very quickly all of the

critics of President Trump who condemned him for provocative words or or threats

saying you're going to drive us to the precipice of a nuclear exchange with

with North Korea in fact it had the opposite effect

well it certainly did and that is the universal view or almost universal view

among Korea watchers so yeah the president's threats actually worked

What Is Reality - Duration: 5:20.

What Is Reality

By Dylan Harper

The following is an excerpt from the book The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing

Who You Are by Alan Watts exploring incredible wordplay for the ultimate question of self

exploration:

When children ask me those fundamental metaphysical questions which come so readily to their minds:

Where did the world come from? Why did God make the world? Where was I

before I was born? Where do people go when they die? Again and again I have found

that they seem to be satisfied with a simple and very ancient story, which goes something

like this:

There was never a time when the world began, because it goes round and round like a circle,

and there is no place on a circle where it begins. Look at my watch, which tells the

time; it goes round, and so the world repeats itself again and again.

But just as the hour-hand of the watch goes up to twelve and down to six, so, too, there

is day and night, waking and sleeping, living and dying, summer and winter. You cant

have any one of these without the other, because you wouldnt be able to know what black

is unless you had seen it side-by-side with white, or white unless side-by-side with black.

In the same way, there are times when the world is, and times when it isnt, for if

the world went on and on without rest for ever and ever, it would get horribly tired

of itself. It comes and it goes. Now you see it; now you dont. So because it doesnt

get tired of itself, it always comes back again after it disappears.

Its like your breath: it goes in and out, in and out, and if you try to hold it in all

the time you feel terrible. Its also like the game of hide-and-seek, because its

always fun to find new ways of hiding, and to seek for someone who doesnt always hide

in the same place.

God also likes to play hide-and-seek, but because there is nothing outside God, he has

no one but himself to play with. But he gets over this difficulty by pretending that he

is not himself. This is his way of hiding from himself.

He pretends that he is you and I and all the people in the world, all the animals, all

the plants, all the rocks, and all the stars. In this way he has strange and wonderful adventures,

some of which are terrible and frightening. But these are just like bad dreams, for when

he wakes up they will disappear.

Now when God plays hide and pretends that he is you and I, he does it so well that it

takes him a long time to remember where and how he hid himself. But thats the whole

fun of itjust what he wanted to do. He doesnt want to find himself too quickly,

for that would spoil the game.

That is why it is so difficult for you and me to find out that we are God in disguise,

pretending not to be himself. But when the game has gone on long enough, all of us will

wake up, stop pretending, and remember that we are all one single Selfthe God who is

all that there is and who lives for ever and ever. Of course, you must remember that God

isnt shaped like a person.

People have skins and there is always something outside our skins. If there werent, we

wouldnt know the difference between what is inside and outside our bodies. But God

has no skin and no shape because there isnt any outside to him.

[With a sufficiently intelligent child, I illustrate this with a Mbius stripa

ring of paper tape twisted once in such a way that it has only one side and one edge.]

The inside and the outside of God are the same. And though I have been talking about

God as he and not she, God isnt a man or a woman. I didnt say it

because we usually say it for things that arent alive. God is the Self of

the world, but you cant see God for the same reason that, without a mirror, you cant

see your own eyes, and you certainly cant bite your own teeth or look inside your head.

Your self is that cleverly hidden because it is God hiding.

You may ask why God sometimes hides in the form of horrible people, or pretends to be

people who suffer great disease and pain. Remember, first, that he isnt really doing

this to anyone but himself. Remember, too, that in almost all the stories you enjoy there

have to be bad people as well as good people, for the thrill of the tale is to find out

how the good people will get the better of the bad.

Its the same as when we play cards. At the beginning of the game we shuffle them

all into a mess, which is like the bad things in the world, but the point of the game is

to put the mess into good order, and the one who does it best is the winner. Then we shuffle

the cards once more and play again, and so it goes with the world.
