- Today, Tom and I are talking about
the open loops in your business
and why the parking brake is on and the money is stopped.

Hey, welcome to the Tom Ferry Show.
Today, first of all welcome back;
thank you so much for watching.
Today I want to talk to you about
an experience that I was dealing with, with a client.
I don't know if you've been there before,
but have you ever felt like you were working super hard
but there was resistance; there was like
this hidden struggle, almost like somebody
had a rope around your waist and they were pulling you back
while you were trying to move forward.
I call it the parking brake, right?
You're trying to go 100 miles an hour down the freeway,
metaphorically running your business,
but the parking brake is on.
Have you ever experienced that before?
I know I certainly have.
I want to talk to you today about the why
and then how you can solve it instantly
to get into that state of flow
where your business is on fire.
I wrote down the following quote, you ready?
And it's just a wonderful reminder
that what stops me here, stops me everywhere.
You know what I'm talking about?
Like, what stops me from making my phone calls
stops me everywhere.
What is that parking brake that you need to release?
What is that thing you need to do
to get the rope around your waist off
so you can move forward powerfully?
The answer is, my friends, you have too many open loops.
This is something that I've been working on for years
with clients.
I take on somebody new and they say
"I want to take my business from here to here."
I immediately say, how many incomplete projects do you have?
And what are the decisions that you need to make
that you lay there in bed saying should I, should I not?
Should I, should I not?
Or gosh I wish I could but I'm totally not committed to it
but I think I should.
Every person watching this, you included,
have been there before.
If I asked you right now, what are
all the incomplete projects?
You ready?
What are all the things that you lay there in bed saying
I gotta do this and I gotta do that
and I gotta get this done and then, man,
you know I gotta, from organizing my closet
and cleaning out my garage,
to finally getting that mailer out
and organizing that email campaign;
finally doing my drip campaign,
redoing my listing presentation, calling my past clients.
And you know what happens?
All of a sudden all these incomplete projects
make that parking break go (screeches),
and it just stops you in your business,
along with those incomplete decisions
where you haven't decided.
So if I was your coach, taking it on
for this Tom Ferry Show, the first thing
I would tell you to do is make up a list
of all the incomplete projects.
You know, got to get the mailer out,
got to organize my database, whatever it may be,
all the things that are maybe on your do board
that are really a priority, but you haven't
gotten them into action yet.
So make up that list of all the projects,
that's step number one.
Step number two is then prioritize them.
Now, I use the phrase what's going to move the needle?
Right, that's what we talk about all the time
in the marketing department.
What's going to move the needle?
What's going to get me listings,
grow my business, create revenue?
I'm going to look at those projects, for me, as the priority
over say, getting something organized.
Now, you know you; maybe you need to organize it first
and that's what moves the needle and gets you into action.
You decide.
But what I want you to do, is
I want you to get your list out, get it out of your head,
get it documented, prioritize it,
and then I wrote down the next thing is,
get an action item you can take immediately,
in the next 24 hours if not immediately
after you write the list.
That's the game my friends; it's about
getting it out of your head, getting it on a list,
prioritizing the projects, what's going to move the needle,
what's going to make you the most money,
whatever matters to you, and then getting an action item
and taking immediate action; that's the game.
So that's number one, but the second side of that is,
what are the decisions that you've been holding off on?
You know it's not often that I talk to someone,
just at a seminar, or just on the streets
or on a coaching session or on a video session,
where someone will say, "I'm just trying to figure out,
"should I do this or that?
"Should I do this or that?"
And you know what happens?
When you're in that state, where you're just not certain
about what you're going to do,
I'm going to read you a quote.
Goethe, you might know it as "Goath".
I think they say "Goath" but it's actually "Gur-tuh."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
He wrote one of the most famous quotes,
and I rewrote it this morning think about you
and thinking about this show.
His quote was, "Until one is committed, there's hesitancy."
Until one is committed, there's hesitancy.
"The chance to draw back always creating ineffectiveness."
He went on to say, "Concerning all acts
"of initiative or creation, the one elementary truth,
"the one elementary truth, the ignorance of which
"kills countless ideas and splendid plans, is simply this,
"the moment one definitely commits, then providence moves."
I get goosebumps just thinking about it!
The moment you commit, providence moves.
What are the decisions you need to make
that have been stopping you from moving forward?
What stops you here stops you everywhere my friends.
So a very simple show today.
I want you to think about, what are the open loops?
List out your projects.
What are the decisions that you need to make
that ultimately, you know sort of visually
as I find my little pen here, closes the loops
and creates integrity?
It closes the loops and creates integrity,
giving you that sense of like, (sighs) I'm in.
This is what I'm going to do, or I've taken it off my list,
I'm not going to do it.
Either one is fine.
I'm going to ask you to do that today, as this show ends.
Secondly I'm going to ask you to share this
with a friend or two that you know drives around
with that parking brake on, and they're struggling,
they're feeling the resistance all the time,
and because you love them, you're going to help them out
with this gentle little reminder to watch this show.
So that's all I got.
Take massive action, get your list together,
make decisions, and do the things
Ultimately, they're going to get that brake gone,
and you get to move forward.
