Chandra Nandni Review: Ekta Kapoor's new show is more masala, less history

With Chandra Nandni, Ekta Kapoor proves yet again that she is the masala queen.

Ekta Kapoor returns to the historical scene--after her hit period show Jodha Akbar--with yet another period drama based on emperor Chandragupta Mauryas life--Chandra Nandni.

The shows first episode aired on Star Plus on Monday night, and it started and ended in typical Ekta Kapoor style--with a lot of masala.

History buffs will obviously make light of the show,.

because let us be honest, the show doesnt have much to do with history, except some important names it has managed to retain;.

like Chandragupta Mauryas, and his mothers name, Moora.

The creators of the show have taken generous amount of creative liberty with the original story or history as we know it.

But to be fair to the makers, that is what cinema does, fluff it here and there with glossy details to make the package more entertaining and watchable.

And maybe, this is justifiable, especially in Chandraguptas case, because we know very little of the ruler from history books.

So, let us not get into the history part of it at all; not too much, at least.

Storyline so far.

The opening sequence of the show has a voiceover of Bharat Mata or Mother India,.

who tells viewers about her son, Chandragupta Maurya, and his great dynasty.

She also throws light on the relationship the ruler shared with his wife, Nandni, who taught him about love and life, like a dutiful wife.

Cut to another scene, where we see Chandraguptas father,.

Suryagupta, sharing an intimate moment with his wife, Moora, Chandraguptas (or Chandras) mother.

The couple (Suryagupta and Moora) then are shown dropping by the kingdom of Magadh where they meet with the king and queen of the Magadh kingdom like old friends.

From here on, the show takes a rather dramatic turn where Moora is molested by one of the staff members of the Magadh kingdom.

The queen of Magadh, Avantika, learns of this misdeed from Moora and decides to punish the culprit; the molester gets whipped.

Later, it is shown that Avantika is actually having an affair with the eve-teaser-in-question, Nandh.

It is also revealed that Magadh queens nine children have been fathered by Nandh.

Suryagupta learns of this truth, but Avantika and Nandh catch him eavesdropping,.

and Nandh rushes to kill him so that the ugly truth does not come out in the open.

The show ends there.

Obviously, both Chandra and Nandni, aka Rajat Tokas and Shweta Basu Prasad, do not make an appearance in the first episode of the show.

The good.

The actors are not that bad; in fact, they are pretty okay.

They fit their roles and do what is required of them, without getting too carried away by their larger-than-life characters.

Also, the first episode has a good enough cliff-hanger, which is good news,.

because now we want to know if the truth about Queen Avantikas affair actually gets out.

The bad.

As we said in the beginning, everyone will have a really tough time buying what the show is trying to sell about Chandragupta Maurya.

Not to mention, the fact about Queen Avantikas illegitimate children, that too nine of them with a guy called Nandh,.

who likes to leer on pregnant bathing women, by the way.

Even if there was some truth to the story, the way the whole thing has been translated on screen reeks of scandalous and loud sub-plots of the saas-bahu dramas.

Also, tacky visual effects.

We know we are not America and cant spend millions of Dollars on visual effects to make everything look genuine,.

but there are a few shots of the Maurya palace that make it look unreal (not in a good way).

The palace looks super-animated, like it has just been put on the screen as an afterthought.

All in all, not the greatest first episode, but masala lovers are going to have a fun time watching the show.

We are still hopeful.

Maybe Rajat Tokas and Shweta Basu Prasad can salvage the show in some way with their acting skills.

Fingers crossed!.

What is Montessori? - Duration: 4:28.

The Montessori classroom is different from the traditional classroom.

Children do not sit in one sit. All day they move around,

they choose their own activities rather than having the teacher chose for them.

Dr. Montessori believed the most important role of the teacher was to prepare and maintain

a well-ordered, attractive classroom, designed to support learning children.

A prepared environment includes thinking about the physical space, the learning materials and equipment,

and ensuring that there are appropriate interactions within the classroom.

Children will learn at their own pace functioning collaboratively within three to six years old class.

Entering the classroom the children feel the connection between home

and school engaging in real work activities, preparing food, polishing, learning to sew

give them sense of confidence and independence.

The teacher is not in charge.

The teacher is a bridge between the classroom, environment and Montessori materials.

We introduce the materials to the children.

We assign them lessons but we are not the only ones. It is the whole class helps to run the whole environment.

They are free to choose their work, but they don't have complete freedom. It is freedom with limits.

We also encourage the parents to involve their children at home

and what we call practical life having the children see you handwriting shopping lists.

This kind of involvement helps the children to build their self-esteem and self-confidence.

And what comes out of it is they develop their self-discipline and their will.

Practical life is one of the key areas that the child begins with when they first come in at the age of three.

We set up at different activities that the child to develop their coordination,

fine motor and gross motor, their independence, their sense of order.

In Practical Life the child learns everyday skills that will help them for rest of their lives.

At a more advance work, the children can do polishing shoes. It starts with spooning, pouring, tonguing,

tweezing that works on their pencil grip and their hand-eye coordination, that is,

the children are building fine motor skills in the hands for writing and also preparing the eye

for reading from left to right and top to bottom. Finally, this area is building blocks for all of the other areas of the classroom.

The sensorial materials allow the children to explore and name all aspects of the senses.

Through these exercises, the child learns to classify the environment, learning to sequence cues from the largest to smallest,

match colors, explores sounds, dimension or texture.

Later the exploration of these materials will allow them to develop better sense of spatial relationship

and establish the ground the study of geometry and algebra.

Arithmetic in the Montessori begins from the concrete and goes to abstract.

So they learn what number one looks like, they learn what number two looks like

and then they will move to the more abstract.

They also learn the operations in a very concrete way by learning addition, multiplication, division and subtraction.

The language area begins with tracing of the sandpaper letters and learning the phonetic sounds of the letters.

It is important for the children to learn how to learn the sounds

because it is through mixing the sounds that they begin to build their own words.

They use a movable alphabet where they can lay out the sequence of the sounds that they are saying and

they go from there into many other activities in the language area

which provide opportunities from them to increase their abilities and to learn new combinations of letters.

When you are introducing and speaking of your cultural areas in your classroom,

it is important to continue to apply as many concrete experiences as possible.

In this area, children develop a sense of place in their world.

What is education for peace?

Dr. Maria Montessori recognized the spirit of love within all children

and emphasized the need to educate children about themselves

Through the activities, they develop a sense of peace within themselves.

In the classroom, children learn courtesy and respect for others.

They learn to cooperate, take responsibility for their actions and resolve differences peacefully.
