Waching daily Jan 29 2019

Hey, it's Leif for Macworld, and today we're going to check out ten of the best Shortcuts

for iPhone.

If you don't know what Shortcuts is, it's an Apple app that was released alongside iOS

12 that performs multiple actions by pressing a single button or uttering a self-programmed

Siri command.

Apple already has a handful of decent Shortcuts in the in-app gallery, but regular iPhone

users made some of the best ones, and you'll find them hiding deep in third-party pages

like the Shortcuts subreddit, Routine Hub, and Shortcuts Gallery.

So I've pulled together a list of the Shortcuts that best enhance the experience of iOS for

all of us.

They're super easy to install if you have already have the Shortcuts app and the link,

and we've listed the links for all the Shortcuts right here in the video's description.

You'll need to activate most of them through the Shortcuts app at first, but you can also

tie them to specific icons on your Home Screen or trigger them with specific Siri commands.

Let's have a look, shall we?

If you've never switched from Spotify to Apple Music solely because of the hassle of importing

playlists, you'll want to check out the Playlist Converter Shortcut from Redditor Laloz8.

It's functional but limited, as it takes only the first 30 songs from a Spotify playlist

and repackages them for Apple Music.

To use it, simply copy the link for the playlist from the Spotify app's Share menu.

You'll then click Share again to access Shortcuts, and from there you'll paste the URL into the

Playlist Converter prompt.

After you give Shortcuts permission to access Apple Music and give the new playlist a name,

the Shortcut works its magic.

Keep in mind, though, that it will take a few seconds since it's sifting through iTunes

for matches.

This method works especially well if you're looking for a simple, free import option when

someone shares a Spotify playlist.

If you have far more than 30 songs to import, though, you'll want to check out a specialized

app like SongShift.

This simple Item Lookup Shortcut from Redditor Jared Butters uses your iPhone's camera to

scan the barcode of any item, which then allows you to check its listing on the websites of

Amazon, Walmart, or Target.

It works beautifully, but unfortunately the Shortcut doesn't allow you to compare the

prices at all three sites at once.

Every time you use it, it'll only open the websites of Amazon, Walmart, and Target in

a new window, but it's quite handy when you're trying to figure out how prices compare among

the heavyweights of online retail.

Apple already has a low-power mode baked into iOS that turns off background refreshes and

other features, but if you really want to squeeze every bit of life out of your battery,

you'll want the "Keep Me Alive" Shortcut from Shortcuts Gallery.

It, too, turns on Low Power Mode, but it also activates Airplane Mode and kills Wi-Fi and

cellular connections while turning the brightness to zero and switching off your phone's sound.

It can't turn off TrueTone and Night Shift, but it gives you a little prompt explaining

how to turn these off as well.

There's a small catch: You'll have to turn everything back on yourself.

Fortunately that's really just a matter of going into Control Center and reactivating

settings like Airplane Mode and Low Power Mode.

It's easy enough to turn on the iPhone's "Do Not Disturb" mode through Control Center,

but I've missed important texts or calls because I've forgotten to switch it off when I'm leaving

a movie theater.

The handy Do Not Disturb Timer ensures that never happens again.

Simply activate the Shortcut through the Shortcuts app (or an icon you place on the Home Screen

if you plan on using it a lot), and you'll see a prompt that asks if you if you want

to set it for a number of minutes or hours.

Enter the desired number, click "Done," and it's as simple as that.

If you have to turn it off before the time is up, you can simply turn it off through

your iPhone's lock screen.

Few Shortcuts have earned more attention than Redditor Robert Petersen's Police Shortcut,

which triggers a complex sequence of events when you tell Siri, "I'm getting pulled

over."

You can customize this controversial Shortcut, but when fully activated, it pauses your music,

activates your front-facing camera, starts recording video, turns down the phone's

brightness, activates Do Not Disturb, and sends a video of the encounter to a pre-programmed

contact.

It's usually fairly difficult to download video and photos from the big social media

sites, but the handy Social Media Downloader from Wirexia9 makes it easy to get around

those roadblocks.

Activate the Shortcut through Safari's Share button when you've visiting a page on YouTube,

Facebook, Twitter, Dailymotion, or Instagram, and it will save the file to your Photos apps.

I've seen many Shortcuts that do this for individual sites, but this one stands out

for offering such a wide range of options.

Even better, you can choose the quality of videos before you download them, or you can

simply download them as audio files.

Sometimes it feels as though the internet runs on GIF files, but it's still surprisingly

hard to make them.

But that's no longer the case with the Convert Video to GIF Shortcut, which allows you to

make a GIF with any video in your phone's library.

Once you activate it, the Shortcut takes you to your phone's video collection, where you

can select which video you want to use.

After choosing, the Shortcut pulls up the video along with a slider that lets you crop

the footage to the desired frames.

Once you've done that, hit "Save" and it'll give you a preview of the GIF.

After that, though, be sure to save the GIF through the options button in the upper right.

This is a crucial step: I tried uploading a GIF straight to Twitter and it didn't work.

If you're looking for a cheap and effective method of archiving receipts, check out the

Receipt and Document Scanner & Storage Shortcut by Sandman on Shortcuts Gallery.

This Shortcut lets you categorize your receipts in up to four folders in your Dropbox accounts.

With each use, the Shortcut asks which folder the receipt should go in, what it was for,

and how much you paid.

After it asks you to take a photo of the receipt, it creates a PDF in your chosen Dropbox folder

with the price and purchase reason in the file name.

Dozens of apps on the App Store provide the same service for a fee, but few match Sandman's

Shortcut for elegance and speed.

Every website now has a dark mode thanks to the Dark Mode Shortcut from Redditor NDH4k4.

To use it, click Share when you're visiting a website in Safari and then select Dark Mode

Version 2 through the Shortcut icon.

Once you click "Allow" on a prompt that allows a bit of Javascript to run, you'll immediately

see the site with a black background and white text.

Keep in mind that it's best used for merely reading content as it also inverts the colors

in the images.

An earlier version of this Shortcut kept the images in their original format, but the text

wasn't always visible.

On the literal bright side, you simply need to refresh the page if you want to see an

image properly.

I've placed a lot of emphasis on user-made Shortcuts for this video, but there are plenty

of decent Shortcuts in Apple's in-app gallery.

My favorite is easily the "Remind Me at Work" Shortcut.

The Reminders app already allows you to trigger a Reminder at a specific spot, but there's

kind of a long process involved if you want to do it manually.

Instead, you only need to enter your address for home or work once when you set up this

Shortcut.

After that, any Reminder you make with this Shortcut will trigger at the programmed location.

And keep in mind that it doesn't have to be just home or work.

If I'm being honest, I mainly use it for my local grocery store, as I'll get notifications

with my grocery list the second I walk in the door.

And that's it for now!

We'll be on the lookout for more great Shortcuts here at Macworld, and we'd love to hear about

Shortcuts that you've found particularly useful as well.

See ya around!

Robert Reich: 7 Suggestions for Surviving the Rest of Trump's Presidency - Duration: 2:46.

It's doubtful he'll be leaving anytime soon.

So here are 7 suggestions for what to do to survive.

First: Don't pay attention to what he says – the ridicule, name-calling, threats, personal

attacks, spectacle.

These are distractions.

Pay attention to what he does: obstructing justice, suppressing the Mueller investigation,

taking over Justice Department decisions over whom to prosecute, cutting back freedom of

the press, profiting from his office, endangering America internationally.

Make a ruckus about the big things, and push House Democrats to focus on them too.

Second: Keep track of what his cabinet is doing.

Especially new rules and regulations, or changes in how regulations are enforced, that hurt

people.

Spread the word.

Get House Democrats to expose and fight them.

Third: Don't get lost in the procedural skirmishes over House subpoenas, executive

privilege, impeachment.

Support big strategic objectives: getting big money out of politics, infrastructure,

cutting drug costs, protecting the Affordable Care Act, and stopping bad laws coming over

from the Senate.

Fourth: Watch what your state is doing.

Support legislators and governors making progress on climate change, reducing inequality, and

public financing of elections.

Fight state legislators and governors cutting back on Medicaid, imposing draconian work

requirements for public assistance, seeking an Article V constitutional convention.

Fifth: Keep your eye on 2020.

Help reverse state voter ID laws.

Instead of political gerrymandering, push for independent state commissions to set district

boundaries.

Have your state join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact to make the Electoral

College irrelevant.

Make sure people are registered to vote.

Sixth: Don't let the upcoming presidential primaries divide us.

There are going to be a lot of candidates for the Democratic nomination.

But regardless of what candidate emerges, keep your eyes on the prize of winning back

the White House.

Seventh and finally: Keep up your morale and energy.

Don't fall into cynicism or despair.

We've already put limits on this catastrophe.

Have faith: We'll get America back.

ExtendmOOC: Behind The Design - Teacher for Learning Edition - Duration: 5:47.

So welcome inside EdX, Giulia, this is Giulia Forsythe, We have... where we are right now

in EdX is we have, we're in the Teacher for Learning Module, and we've checked out the

scenario from Bueller, Ferris Bueller and we have checked out the overview, the objectives,

the outcomes and now we are going to have some real talk about this module.

Each of these modules had a main developer and for the Teacher for Learning module we

looked no further than the Centre for Pedagogical Excellence that is Giulia Forsythe from Brock

University.

So we'll have a chat with her to see how she feels and what she thinks about this module.

So, welcome Giulia, thank you for joining us.Thanks for having me.

It's very exciting to be here.

Awesome.

So what were your intentions with this module when you made it?

Well the great thing is when joined the team it had already been establishes that we really

wanted to base the Teacher for Learning Module on this excellent book (How Learning Works)

which I highly recommend.

This one?

That's the one!

And it, you can see that mine is a library copy I recommend every teaching centre have

a copy of this.

When I went to a conference once the Educational Developers called it their bible.

So anyway it's a really great book and it's helpful and it had been decided that that

would be the basis.

And what I was really happy about was that this was the first module that they wanted

to be out of the gate because the foundation of everything is student learning.

And so that's why How Learning Works is one of the most important elements.

They're all really important and they're definitely interwoven as you'll see as you go along.

So I wanted to kind of make it less just a reading activity but more and as you'll see

the whole course is like this that it's something to be done and experimented and played with

and to be really fun to try new things and look at the concepts in a really hands on

and meaningful way.

So it was I hope a lot of the activities are really fun.

I've done all of them myself so I love them as well.

Did we ever hand you your badge then if you've done them all yourself?

I haven't gotten my badge.

I was wondering, where do those badges go?

Where do they live?

They live wherever you want to put them but they come from the eCampusOntario Badge Passport.

Yeah, well as the developer I didn't submit them officially for you know, authentication.

So I'll have to do that this time around.

We will.

Can you just tell us a little bit about your the process you went through to design it?

Well we tried to do it highly collaboratively so I worked with Valerie and the rest of the

eCampusOntario team.

We... each of us were a lead but we definitely had collaborative documents open so as we

were adding and writing people could check in and make sure we were on track.

I basically used the book as the framework so every single sub module is one of the chapters

in the book, based on one of the seven principles.

And it was an iteration so we started with...

I really started the way that I always work is to begin with the end in mind so I always

sort of started with the assignment or what kind of outcome you wanted from each of the

things so what do we want to do to accomplish at the end of it and then we would lead them

towards it.

And then there was some you know typo checking and adding and clarification.

We had a really interesting sections on the one about achieving mastery.

Talking about threshold concepts, which itself is a threshold concept so it was really good

because I ended up having my own expert blind spot about threshold concepts.

So it was good to have other people come in and say "I don't know what you're talking

about."

So kind of okay I need to explain that more.

So yeah it was collaborative activity.

Very cool.

And I have just one more question.

What do you hope people get out of this module?

Well I really hope that at the core of all of their activities that learning becomes

the heart of it.

And so that you are able to think about your situation whether you're a teacher or administrator

that you're looking at you know the most important activity is the student learning and how can

we achieve that and how can we support teachers to achieve that.

So if you're an administrator like I work in the Teaching Centre so I don't often get

to work directly with students so I'm been working with faculty and so you know in the

book there's all the scenarios which are really common kind of issues and maybe those will

come out so people can talk to each other about some of the challenges that they have

and then how they overcome them.

And I'm hoping that each of the activities really kind of open new pathways of collaboration

and thinking about different ways of getting at improving student learning.

Wonderful!

I can't wait to see what people do with this.

That's great.

Thank you so much for joining me today.I appreciate it.

Good luck.

I can't wait to see all the stuff.

Alright.

Let's get in there.

Thanks!
