Is religion a private affair? If that is the case, what do you say about preaching?
How do you view the issue of collaboration of the Muslim Ummah?
Islam or any other religion addresses a person individually. Allah has commanded us to have faith in Him as individuals.
He commands us all to perform deeds of piety.
He has told us that if we perform good deeds and keep our knowledge purified,
He will reward us with eternal life and bless us with greatest blessings.
It means that the real subject of religion is the death of an individual.
Since we have to die, religion only answers our question of whether death marks the end of life or leads to another life.
It tells us with strong knowledge-based and rational proofs that death does not end our lives.
The real life starts after death. That life will be eternal and perpetual.
We need to strive hard to get success in that life. This is the message of the religion.
Obviously this message has been given to humans as individuals. But, does an individual remain alone all the time?
No. if you study the life of an individual, when he comes of age, he has a family.
When he grows up and gets married, he ties himself in relation of husband and wife.
When he gets children, relations of parents and children are formed.
When he comes out to make his living, he develops relations with many people of the society.
Similarly, since the human civilization needs man to live in a tribal or state system, this leads to creation of states.
Thus, politics, economy, social issues, everything becomes dependent upon individuals.
Our religion provides teachings regarding all these spheres of life.
What is the target of these teachings? The target is purification.
God wants to see us purified in a house asan individual, as a father, husband, wife, merchant,
businessman, ruler, and runner of economic and social issues.
Therefore, there is little doubt about that the real addressee of the religion is man as an individual.
But, since an individual has different status in various conditions, it makes religion relevant in all moral issues of life.
However, we need to understand what the content of the religion is. It consists of four things.
First thing is the worship to discharge the rights of Allah.
Secondly, we must follow teachings regarding purification of our body.
Third, we should maintain purity of our eatables.
Allah permits us to eat pure things and forbids us from eating impure foods.
We should maintain purity of our moral being.
The purification of moral being should be observed while weighing on scale, making medicines,
dealing the customers in the market, doing business, and running the system of the state.
Therefore, regarding all the matters where moral corruption can occur, the religion has issued some teachings.
This is the real picture. You should keep this picture in mind to make the question of privacy irrelevant.
Islam addresses individuals considering all aspects of their lives. In whatever role you deal with people, ethical questions arise.
In all these matters, Allah has sent guidance teaching His servants how to run a state, from moral point of view.
He has left everything else out. He only wants purification which is the purpose of the religion.
Religion is not concerned about our business. It only tells that whatever business we do, we do it with integrity,
honestly, not cheating other through adulteration, and avoiding any moral corruption in it.
This is the real subject of the religion which is, the purification of moral being of every individual.
It is nothing but moral purification. It is required in all departments of life.
In it, we cannot separate anything from the religion.
It is because, the moral standard of religion will appear everywhere, in your shop, office, business, market and even your writings.
It will show in your poetry, literature, music, and politics. Where will it come from?
It only demands that we uphold the highest standards of morality in every matter.
For that, the religion has issued teachings, and commandments. This is the correct introduction of the religion.
The second part of the question was regarding collaboration (ijtimaiat) of Muslim Ummah. Please share your views.
The basis for collaboration among Muslim Ummah as described in the Holy Quran is that all Muslims are brother to each other.
One association of brotherhood among us exists on the basis of humanity as we are the offspring of Adam and Eve.
Quran has reminded us of this association as well.
After we embrace Islam, the association of brotherhood on the basis of religion is established.
This is not the association based on nationality but on brotherhood.
As brothers, we have all the responsibilities a brother has to discharge towards his brother.
The responsibilities include being sincere to each other, leaving our doors open for each other,
helping our brothers through difficult situations, deal with one another with due sincerity and welfare of others.
These responsibilities have been defined by the Holy Quran.
There is nothing more or less than these responsibilities obligatory for a Muslim.
