Waching daily Nov 1 2018

What's for lunch today?

Oh God, I feel sleepy

I should sleep for awhile

Studying it loud will help you

to stay focused

And if then also you're distracted,

try writing notes while studying

if you're in short of time

then consider writing just the key words of what you're studying

To pass we need to study for long hours

especially when exams are close

if you dont have a study space

then try studying on a chair/ on the floor

so that you wont feel drowsy

if we study for long hours

in the same position

our brain tents to think

that we are in a rest mode

thats why, try changing study positions

after regular intervals

Strained Throat from Singing: Causes (And Solutions for More Relaxed Throat) - Duration: 10:50.

If you are wondering how to stop straining your voice, this video is for you.

I'll talk about three most common causes of strained voice from singing and the best

solutions for a more relaxed throat!

Keep on watching!

Hi, I am Katarina from How 2 Improve Singing.

For the best advice on how to use your voice in a healthy way, subscribe to my channel

and click the bell icon so that you get notified when I post a new video every week.

If you are experiencing a strained throat from singing, you are not alone.

It's actually quite common to feel vocal strain, especially when you are at the beginning

of your singing journey.

But vocal tension is no stranger to seasoned singers either.

If your throat feels tight when singing and don't know how to relax throat muscles,

by the end of this video, you will know exactly why this is happening to you and most importantly,

you will have a better idea how to avoid straining your voice when singing and keep it healthy

for a long time to come.

What is vocal strain?

First of all, let's clear out some things.

When people talk about vocal strain or a strained voice, they may refer to two different types

of problems.

First, they may be talking about strained vocal folds.

This is a more serious problem when the focal folds change their structure and the voice

quality changes.

You may sound hoarse or in severe cases, you may even lose your voice completely for a

few days.

The second type of vocal strain refers to strained throat muscles inside and around

your larynx.

During healthy and efficient singing, the vocal folds come together without the engagement

of other muscles.

However, singers sometimes add unnecessary muscle action to help produce sounds, especially

high notes or loud notes.

In this case, your voice may still have good quality but tight throat muscles may eventually

lead to vocal fold injuries.

Some vocal strain symptoms in this case may include discomfort, growing tightness, or

uneasy feeling of a closed throat.

It is challenging to move from one register to another, which means that singing high

or low seems difficult.

Your voice tires easily and it may be difficult to sing for prolonged periods of time.

Your voice sounds thin and dampened because the muscles are stiff and the resonating spaces

are small.

In more severe cases, you can feel muscle pain or even become hoarse.

So, whether you strain your vocal folds or your throat muscles when singing, you want

to eliminate tension from your singing.

Period.

Now, let's talk about causes and some solutions for more relaxed throat muscles.

There are many reasons why you may be straining but essentially, it all boils down to three

most common reasons.

Cause #3 is probably most common.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Cause #1: Too much muscle action If you are singing at higher intensity levels

than what you are used to, you can experience straining.

Even if you are using good technique, you may end up with sore throat because your muscles

are not conditioned to work this hard.

This can happen when you don't warm up your voice, or when your amplification system fails

and your voice has to compete with the band or background noise, or when you change your

repertoire to high intensity songs.

The solution for these problems is fairly easy.

Condition your voice for high intensity tasks gradually.

Don't go from zero to 100%.

Go from 0 to 5 %, then 10% and so on and slowly build up your vocal strength and endurance.

Always warm up and double check your amplification system.

Cause #2: Muscle action for too long Similarly, to the previous cause, if you sing

for longer periods of time than what your voice is used to, you can create muscle tension.

In the comments below, let me know if this ever happened to you.

Did you strain your voice because you sang too much, more than what you are used to?

This scenario is common during special seasons, like Christmas holidays, when singers have several

performances lined up one after another.

Too much caroling.

This type of strain is also very common with up-and-coming artists who are suddenly asked

to sing much more than what their vocal instruments are used to.

Add emotional stress to this equation and vocal strain is born.

Again, the solution is quite straightforward.

Gradually prepare your vocal instrument for higher demands ahead of time.

Also, make sure that you schedule voice breaks and vocal rests.

For example, if you know that you have 3 performances and 2 rehearsals in a weekend, make sure that

you schedule silent or quiet periods during that weekend too.

And skip the after party to preserve your voice.

Cause 3: Unnecessary muscle movement The most common cause of vocal strain, especially

in untrained voices, is poor vocal technique.

When we sing, only certain muscles should be moving in order to produce sound.

However, untrained singers may employ other muscles that are not necessary for singing

and sound production.

The biggest offenders are the jaw, tongue, and neck muscles, but also shoulders and abdomen.

Sometimes, singers falsely believe that singing should feel or look certain way.

An example of that is unnecessary jaw movement when singing.

Sometimes, singers don't have enough experience or knowledge to recognize what's healthy

and what is not.

This may include moving the head when singing high notes or lifting shoulders when inhaling.

Other times, inexperienced singers choose inappropriate repertoire, which is out of

reach for their current skills.

Or they imitate the wrong models who strain their muscles too.

And very often, singers are simply not aware of what is going on in their own bodies when

singing.

Some examples of straining are quite obvious and observable.

But more often than not, unnecessary movements are hidden and not readily visible.

The solution is a long-term solution.

It starts with self-awareness and continues with developing good vocal and breathing technique.

It starts with education – learn what singing should feel and look like.

Choose good models to learn from, singers who produce tension free sounds and have good

technique.

Have realistic expectations - good singing technique does not happen over time.

Sing repertoire that you are ready for.

Don't go straight for the most challenging songs, like ...

But what can YOU do right now to start singing without straining?

Start building good breathing technique that will take pressure away from your throat.

Learn how to breathe from a low place and how to connect the breath to your voice.

I have some breathing exercises that will help you with that.

Click the link here or under the video, to learn more.

And in my next video, I will share 3 very specific exercises that will help you sing

without straining your throat.

The Next Great Package: Design for Purpose - Duration: 9:52.

(energetic music)

- Welcome to The Next Great Package.

In this series we put the brightest young minds

in packaging design to the test with challenges

designed to stretch the limits of their imagination.

Let's meet the creatives competing

in today's challenge, Design for Purpose.

- I work in the packaging field.

I'm always designing with paper, and if I'm not

designing packaging, I'm designing graphics

and they go hand in hand.

- Part of the reason why I decided to become a designer

was to showcase that we can provide solutions

and provide answers that people

don't normally see through what we do.

- Hello designers.

- Hey.

- You both have a unique mix of packaging

and industrial design experience, and today we're

going to be putting those skills to the test.

You'll be going head-to-head designing a unique prototype

that you'll be presenting directly

to online retailer Zappos.

Your challenge is related to adaptive packaging.

Zappos Adaptive is an online shopping experience

that offers innovative products from brands

that help make getting dressed easier for everyone.

Their target consumer group are people with disabilities,

or anyone with limited dexterity

or challenges in getting dressed.

You'll have the next 10 hours to use anything

and everything in our space to create

an innovative packaging solution for adaptive apparel.

- Having the ability to be in this competition

is so exciting because it shows that paper goes beyond

everything we ever thought it could be.

- Maybe I don't win, but maybe another designer

will be inspired to make packaging and products

that include everyone.

- Let's get started.

(upbeat music)

- My personal attachment to the challenge

is my father was in an accident, and he has lost

motor skills in his right arm.

It's very difficult for him to do

the same things that he used to.

So when I see a challenge to design

for people with disabilities,

I have to think about my father.

- Hey designers

- [Asia] Hey.

- So you've had a little time with this challenge,

How is it treating you so far?

- [Asia] Pretty good.

- What's going on over here?

- [Asia] This back would actually flip down

instead of it being a full, solid box, it would roll out.

Even if they have limited range of movement,

they would easily be able to just tumble the box over.

- You're headed in a good direction, so I'm excited

to see what comes next.

- Thank you.

- [Adesina] Alright Alex, what's going on on this side?

- I'm specifically designing

for I guess like visual impairment.

The only thing they have to do is actually

stand on the box itself to put the shoes on.

- How are you making sure that that box

is still easy to open?

- I need to create like a sort of a flap

that's also easy to open, but at the same time

that keeps it safe and locked.

- You do have a lot of work to do to make this prototype--

- Yes.

- Work, but I like the fact that you're innovating.

You have about nine hours left, so keep up the good work.

And I'll see you guys at the next check in.

- Sometimes when people make things for adaptability

and for people with disabilities,

it kind of lacks a certain everyday appeal.

So I want to appeal to not only people with disabilities

and function, but I also want it to have a good form.

- I think being part of this competition is about

showing that we as designers are moving forward

and to making everyone a part of the same world.

- How is the challenge going?

You're at the halfway point.

- It's going pretty well.

These flaps here are to aid in stacking strength.

And this would roll over.

So I'm thinking I'll drop that slot, and then

I'll have a magnet strip there as well.

- Very good Asia.

- [Asia] Thank you.

- Let's see what Alex is cooking up.

- Looking more like a box now, like.

- Yes, I see you changed--

- Yeah.

- The shape a little bit.

- I just kind of like decided to add

a little bit of breathing space for the shoe

to kind of like exist within its environment.

Also I'm adding this little line here in the middle

to like have like that division happening.

- You are at the midway point, so remember

keep an eye on that clock,

and make sure you use your time wisely.

(upbeat music)

- Yours is looking pretty good.

- [Asia] Thank you.

- I really like it.

- I hope that they like that my design is practical.

(upbeat music)

- The challenge is coming to a close.

You have just a little bit of time left.

How are you feeling before judging?

- Well, to start with I made this way thinner than like

you looked at it when I was prototyping.

So it's way more sleek.

- Voilá.

I see you've built your final prototype.

Is it almost done or is it done?

- It's done.

So I measured the magnets,

made sure that it would lie flush when I close it.

They could also cover up the magnets

with some adhesive paper and double line the card.

- These are the final few minutes,

so last looks, final touches, and then I want you both

to get your stuff together and meet me in judging.

Good luck.

- I'm very excited, nervous, but also really happy

that they're about to see what I came up with.

- I'm a bit nervous, I don't really know

what the judges are going to think about it.

And he's a talented designer, so it could be either way.

- Designers, today you were challenged

to create a prototype for adaptive packaging.

It's time to meet your judges.

We have here Mindy Scheier,

a member of the Zappos Adaptive Advisory Council

as well as the founder of the Runway of Dreams Foundation.

She's joined by Sarah Chavey,

a member of the Zappos Communications team.

- It is so critically important

to have packaging that includes people with disabilities,

so thank you so much for doing this.

And we absolutely can't wait to see what you've created.

- It's time for us to review your prototypes.

Asia, we'll start with you, please step up.

- Thank you so much for having me.

I wanted to create a shoebox that would help people

to open it if they have limited range of movement.

So I used a ribbon as well as magnetic closures

so that it would be easy for them to just open it.

- Amazing, great job.

- [Asia] Thank you.

- I love it.

- I really commend your detail to how the packaging looks

as that's very much a part of the Zappos Adaptive platform.

Visually, it should be as fabulous and incredible

as any other box that comes to the house from Zappos.

- Thank you.

- Asia, thank you so much.

You did a fantastic job presenting.

You can take a step back.

- Thank you.

- [Mindy] Thank you Asia.

- Alex, we're ready to see your prototype.

Please step up.

- Hi guys.

- [Mindy And Sarah] Hi.

First of all I want to thank you for giving me

the chance to be part of this.

This challenge has really allowed me to rethink the way

I think about shoe packaging.

So this is my package.

I also focused on shoes, but my intake

was for the visually impaired

and how to use a box to have visual cues.

So this is a prototype of the shoebox that I made

with the idea of not even needing your hands

to take the shoes out of the box.

So it's very simple to open.

It requires very minimal strength.

And of course, red and yellow were the main colors

that sparked up between the three different types

of color-blindness, makes it easier for people

with low visibility to distinguish which shoe is which.

- I could actually see people storing their shoes in here.

- [Alex] Yeah.

- It makes it really easy to organize your closet

and get dressed in the morning.

- Multi-functional.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, absolutely.

- You did a great job, thank you so much for presenting.

- Excellent, excellent.

- You can take a step back.

- Thank you.

- Thank you for all your feedback.

- I think they both did such a fantastic job. - I agree.

I could really see both

of those packages working very well--

- Me too.

- For Zappos.

- It's gonna be a really hard decision.

- [Sarah] I know, such a touch decision.

- Alright judges, only one prototype can be named

The Next Great Package.

So, have you reached a decision?

- Alex, we loved that your package is something

that the consumer will continue to appreciate

long after they've received their new shoes.

- Thank you very much.

- Asia, I think that you did an incredible job

of working on modifying what already exists

which is really the foundation of what we are trying to do

in the world of adaptive fashion.

But unfortunately, we can only pick one winner.

And that winner is Asia.

You have created The Next Great Package.

- [Adesina, Mindy, Sarah] Congratulations.

- Asia totally deserved to be the winner.

She's just such like a talented designer

and really smart person. So,

I mean, I couldn't have seen another outcome, to be honest.

- Still kind of in shock a little bit.

But I'm really happy and I'm glad that they liked my design.

I put a lot of hard work into it.

I'm really excited to tell my dad his insight

and his experience definitely inspired my design

and motivated the feeling behind it.

- On behalf of Mindy Scheier, Zappos, and of course

the Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds campaign,

thank you so much to both of our designers

for sharing your amazing talents with us today.

And for everyone watching at home, the next time

you open up an ingenious, well-constructed package,

just remember, somewhere out there a talented designer

put a lot of thought and care into it.

I'm Adesina and I'll see you next time.

The Next Great Package: Design for Food - Duration: 9:19.

(upbeat music)

- Welcome to The Next Great P ackage.

In this series, we put the brightest young minds

in packaging design to the test.

With challenges designed to stretch the limits

of their imagination.

Let's meet the creatives competing in today's challenge,

Design for Food.

- I love design. I like the challenge.

I like solving problems.

I'm going through the entire design process.

- I've always loved art,

and there was always something creative in me.

Being a graphic designer in New York City

has been really exciting,

so it's been a really great career.

- Hello designers.

- Hi.

- Now you both have a unique mix of packaging

and industrial design experience.

And today, you're gonna put those skills to the test,

and you're gonna go head to head,

and design a unique prototype

that you'll pitch directly to Ciaran Duffy,

the executive chef of Moe's Southwest Grill.

- Oh my god.

- Moe's creates fresh southwest favorites

for families across the country.

How can Moe's create to-go packaging

so that families can walk into a restaurant,

and order something to please the entire family?

A meal kit with everything you'd need,

all fully cooked with toppings that you can serve

right out of it's packaging.

You'll have the next 10 hours to use anything and everything

here in this studio to create an innovative

and functional family taco to-go kit

designed for the busy Moe's customer.

- I'm really excited how this project is gonna show me,

and show how I represent myself through design.

- I'm honored that I would be chosen to share my ideas,

and get the feedback, and I look forward to that.

- Alright, no time like the present.

Get in there, and get designing.

- Off the bat, I'm pencil to paper.

I'm looking for inspiration, looking for art direction,

and things are gonna click with me, into a packaging form.

- Food is messy.

I feel a little nervous about the aspect of

having to contain everything together

and make it easy to transport,

and then easy to use when you get home.

- Hello designers.

So we are two hours into our challenge,

we've got eight hours left.

How are you both feeling?

- Excited, and nervous.

Remembering going to Moe's

and experiencing all the different salsas,

reminiscing and kind of looking back.

- So you let the taco package

be inspired by the taco itself.

- Kind of, yeah.

Those images online, I was like this is delicious, so.

- Alright I like that.

- We're gonna carry it through.

- Marti, what is going on here?

- I was just inspired by music,

and I realize that Moe's stands for musicians, outlaws

and entertainers, so I wanted to make a taco guitar.

- Amazing, now these containers here,

are they gonna be the same depth as these?

- [Marti] Yes they are.

- Both of you have come up with

some really different designs.

I'm interested in seeing how these prototypes work out.

I'll see you at the next check in.

(light music)

- Oh my gosh I have so many things to pack in.

- I know I have so many pieces,

I just feel like there's still a lot.

- It's a little unnerving knowing

there's so many pieces to put together

because of a food item,

I'm trying to make sure all of the components fit,

and when I actually did do some scoring and folding,

I found some things were a little too tall.

- I'm cutting the pieces that make a tray

that fit inside my taco tray,

and I just really hope they all fit together,

cause I measured them specifically for each taco shell.

This has just been quite a challenge,

and I just really need to make it work.

- How are my designers doing?

- Good

- So these are my little mini tacos,

so it is functional, it's just a matter

of what will translate into

full size.

- Looking good so far.

- Thank you.

- Can't wait to see the next step.

- These are my two trays that fit into the one larger tray.

This is my taco tray piece,

and then all the fixins go around the sides.

- You are on the right track, so keep it up.

We're halfway there, so just keep an eye on the clock,

and be mindful of how you use your time.

I will check in again before time is up.

(upbeat music)

- We are down to the wire.

It's almost time for judging are you ready?

- I just wanna make sure all the pieces are together,

these should all stack and fit.

So you're just gonna quickly chop chop,

and fold it up, and get it to go?

- Yes.

- Alright.

Marti.

- I think the final challenge will be

locking all the lids together in place,

and making sure it's easy to carry in transport.

- These are the final minutes,

so please put your projects together,

and I will see you in a few minutes, in judging.

- Hands are a little sweaty, heart's kind of racing.

I'm making sure I'm ready to present,

and really put my best foot forward.

- I guess I've never been in a competition like this before,

so we'll see what happens, I'm just gonna come,

and be prepared, and present my design,

and I hope it goes well.

- Let's do it.

- Designers, today you were both challenged

to design a prototype family taco to-go kit.

And so I'd like to introduce you to Ciaran Duffy,

the executive chef of Moe's Southwest Grill.

And he will be judging your designs.

- Thank you both for agreeing to take part

in this special design challenge for Moe's.

What we're looking for from your design

is a packaging solution for a family taco to-go order.

- Let's begin the review.

Marti, let's start with you.

Come on up and present your design.

- Chef Duffy, so nice to meet you.

- [Duffy] Nice to meet you too.

- Thank you for inviting me to be a part of this challenge.

I love Mexican food, I love Moe's, your queso is bangin'.

- Yes.

- This is a family style guitar taco kit.

I was very inspired because I know Moe's stands for

musicians, outlaws and entertainers.

- You got it.

- I love music, I love that your restaurant

has a food inspired music art on the walls.

So I went from there, so this is a guitar.

It has three separate lids.

Your fixins go in here.

Beef, queso,

beans,

tomatoes, lettuce.

- Wow.

- Tacos go in here.

- [Duffy] The big reveal look at that.

That's fantastic.

- This is for salsas, I know you guys

have a lot of different flavors of salsa.

I really like the idea that your family

can take this home, sit around eating it,

all the food stays inside.

- It looks fantastic, and it really does blend

with the Moe's culture.

I think people would be taking pictures

and sending it all over the internet.

- Great, thank you.

- Great job Marti, thank you so much for your presentation.

You can take a step back.

- Thank you. - Thank you.

- Okay Christina we are ready for you.

Why don't you take a few steps forward,

and present your prototype?

- Alright, so meet the taco takeout.

Like a giant taco purse, but inside it holds

everything you need for family taco night.

Everything down to the family sized queso,

and some toppings for the many different salsas

that you have at the bar.

This also again can be designed

because it's out of paper and cardboard,

it can be done in different scales,

and it's easy to assemble,

and I'll continue to show you that.

We've got an area for taco shells.

- [Duffy] Wow.

- So these are your containers for your food.

Meat, vegetables, there's options to have

these food safe containers,

have areas for the different cheeses.

And you can take it right out, everything's nice and snug,

and off you go.

- That's great, what I really like about this

is the die cut, right?

So this could be something that could be mass produced,

shipped, not a lot of volume on the shelf, right,

because everything is just gonna pop out.

So that's really, really creative, I like that a lot.

- Thank you.

- Amazing, thank you so much

for your presentation Christina.

- Absolutely, it's great.

- You can take a step back.

- Thank you, thank you.

- Alright, Chef Ciaran, you've had an opportunity

to chat with both designers.

You've reviewed their prototypes.

- I have.

- I actually think both of them did a tremendous job.

- They are both amazing.

Unfortunately, I can only pick one winner.

And the winner is, Marti.

What a fantastic, fantastic product, absolutely.

- Congratulations Marti, you have The Next Great Package.

- I was really excited for Marti.

Definitely sad I lost, it was still a competition,

and there's a lot of work going into it,

but at the end of the day it was a great competition.

- I'm excited, I'm surprised,

I honestly had no idea how this was gonna turn out.

- On behalf of Chef Ciaran, Moe's Southwest Grill,

and of course the Paper and Packaging

How Life Unfolds campaign.

Thank you so much to our designers

for sharing your talents with us today.

And for you at home, the next time you open up

a well constructed ingenious package,

just remember somewhere out there

a talented designer put a lot of thought and effort into it.

Thank you so much for watching,

and we'll catch you next time.
