Hello everyone!
With you - Krivulya Andrew Charly and with this tutorial - I'm starting to record a
video series about Substance Designer.
In them, I will talk - about this wonderful program and I'll begin with the basics.
Where does without them.
And gradually we will come to the professional level - when we will create the complex assets.
I will try to tell about the all awesome features in this program.
So, Let's Go!
Today, September the 15th and at this moment - the most recent version of Substance Designer is 2018.2.1.
To create a new project, you need to go to File and select New Substance or press CTRL + N.
After that - a window will appear in which You will see presets for the Graph Editor.
Usually, the all work begins with a basic preset - Physically Based (Metallic / Roughness)
But you can also - choose any of the other ...
And after reading the description - understand for what you can use them.
So, choose the base preset and write the name of the Graph ...
Then select the size of the texture.
For now, leave Absolute and about this option - we'll talk a little later.
Leave by default the resolution and I recommend is at least 16bit format.
To have a quality texture for displacement and normal map.
If you wish, you can choose - HDRi 32bit
But let's start this tutorial with 16bit.
Also, when you select a preset, you will see the base nodes that will be created in the Graph Editor.
These are BaseColor, Normal, Roughness, Metalic and Height.
Click OK to create these nodes.
In the end, they will appear in the Graph Editor, and in the panel on the left, a so-called "package" will appear,
which stores the all settings of your material.
In general, the whole pack of materials you will always have in the Explorer.
If you wish, you can always export it as separate textures,
share in Substance Share.
Save special file for Substance Painter and so on.
During work - we periodically will return to this panel.
In the center, as you already understood - Graph Editor.
The window in which is created a crazy amount of the nodes and magic happens.
If you click on the nodes, then on the right you will see their settings and in 2d-view -
the texture obtained is in the course of various manipulations.
There is also a library of different scripts, materials, filters - which will be useful to you.
in creating super asset and you will find it on the left - under Explorer.
And of course - a 3d-view which displays a real-time render of the received material.
So let `s talk about hotkeys and navigation.
So, CTRL + N - creating a new Substance Graph.
To open the saved Substance project - CTRL + O.
Close Substance Designer - CTRL + F4.
Save project - CTRL + S.
Undo - CTRL + Z.
Redo - CTRL + Y.
Navigating in the Graph Network is very simple.
To zoom in or out the workspace - use MMB or ALT + RMB.
You can Pan by using the middle mouse button or CTRL + RMB.
To reset the Zoom settings - press Z.
To align all nodes on Graph Network window - press F.
CTRL + C and CTRL + V - copy and paste nodes.
To bring up a menu with which you can add nodes, comments, frames, etc.
Click RMB.
Calling the filter list produced by pressing the space bar.
Also, the all filter nodes are located on the panel at the top - in the Graph Network window.
Then, you may need hot keys - to use the different
connection types for nodes
At the top, on the panel Graph - there is an icon which named "Link"
and there are 3 types of connections - Standard, Material and Compact Material.
To figure out what they are for - let's take some filter from the MaterialFilters folder.
Blending ...
In the library and drag it to the Graph window.
As you can see - it has a lot of outgoing connections and it will be uncomfortable to
produce a connection with each node, most likely.
Therefore, the developers came up with the solution to this problem.
This is the second option which named "Material" in the "Link" menu.
You can activate it by pressing a key "2".
Now, if you choose any outgoing connection and start dragging -
That all the others - automatically will drag along with it.
And as soon as you produce connection to any of the incoming channels -
For example, to Base Color,
all others automatically connect too.
To make the compact material - press 3
In a compact mode - you will have one outgoing connection which
automatically connect with the all channels which you will need.
And if you will press 1 - you will activate standard connection mode -
when only one outgoing is selected.
It is very convenient - when you produce different operations with each of the channels.
