The Campaign for Excellence without Barriers - Duration: 4:11.I still remember the day that I received my offer
from U of T.
When, I'm gonna cry, when I told my Grandma, we cried.
It was so nice.
She knew how hard I worked.
I'll never forget that
(gentle piano music)
I grew up in Port Hood on Cape Breton Island.
It's a very small fishing village,
I think there's maybe 400 people in the town.
If anyone from my town kind of even thought about coming to
U of T Law, you might take a look at the tuition,
and that would be it.
I grew up in Ottawa, I was born Metis.
The fact that I have long hair, my dad, he had long hair
his whole life.
It's a way of your community recognizing that you've been
in good faith.
And if you break faith, that you get your hair cut.
And it takes you that long to sort of earn the trust back.
And I've chosen to keep that, 'cause I think it's
a philosophy and ethics, and that's a big part of my life.
I grew up in Rexdale.
I had a really difficult time growing up at home.
To make a long story short, I had to leave my home
when I was 16.
I think a lot of students like me, consider it to be a risk
to go to law school.
Pursuing a career in law was more of a dream rather than
a goal.
And most of the reason was because of financial reasons.
We need to be more diverse.
We need to have a more diverse profession that reflects
the range of experience, the range of backgrounds
that we're so proud of in this country.
And so I think a great deal would be lost if financial
obstacles prevented a broad range of people from attending
this law school.
It's fundamental that we continue to get the best
and the brightest no matter what their backgrounds are.
And that the increasing costs of tuition are not an
impediment to those students coming to this great place.
I have two children.
At U of T, I've been given every support that I could
ask for as a mother and a law student.
It's important to remember that you're here because
other people believed in you,
and that it's incumbent upon you as a future professional
to offer those same kinds of things to future students
to be a part of university as an alumni,
to be a part of even giving back financially
to the institution if you can.
You wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that generosity.
Many a time,
students who are hit with financial constraints,
that maybe other students don't,
often times are ethnic students.
You walk outside and you see people from all over the world.
That's not necessarily what you see here.
And I think if we had a more robust financial aid program,
that we could start to see more diverse students here,
I think it's really important to have students from
different experiences and different backgrounds.
At Downtown Legal Services,
there were times when I was able to relate to someone
in a different way because I share their experience
of having come from a rural area or of having been
socioeconomically challenged as I was growing up,
and it made a difference in how I presented their case
and how I thought about them and how I could advocate
for them.
Our alumni have increasingly recognized how they are
an indispensable pillar that underlies the success
of this faculty.
They provide their time, they provide their mentorship,
they employ our students.
To those who have contributed so far,
and to those who might contribute in the future,
I just want to say thank you.
MARESSA: I'd really like them to know how much
the money helps.
KIA: Student financial aid is critical to my being here.
I'm a student who has to worry on one day about paying
my tuition bill and then going home to pay for diapers
and groceries for my whole family.
And I can do that.
And I don't have to worry about it.
I know it's not easy,
but it makes sure that every student who has a dream
of coming to law school, can follow it.
None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for
the help of the financial aid program.
Thank you.
Thank you a thousand times.
MARESSA: It's literally changed my life.

How to Create School Showcase Pages for Your BREW | Ballen Brands 2018 - Duration: 7:09.Hello, this is Catherine Chadwick, Project Manager with Ballen Brands and today I'm going
to show you how to build school showcase pages for your communities and their proper hierarchy
to use.
I'm going to come at this from an angle where there are multiple school districts that may
or may not cover multiple cities, and I'm going to use the county page as my parent
page, and I'm using school districts as my top tier category.
If you were just using one school district with one city, you would use that city as
your parent page, and you would title this schools instead of school district, and you
would still use elementary, middle, high school or junior high school, whatever is popular
in your area.
For the sake of what I'm doing, I'm going with the multiple school districts that may
or may not cover multiple cities, so I've already created the categories.
How I did that was I put the title of what a wanted here and then I created a parent
category if it was elementary, high, or middle.
For school district, I did not.
And then I hit add a new category.
So we're going to create the pages under the county.
So what I want to do is add in a showcase page.
We're going to start with our school district, so I want to go ahead and name my school district.
We're going to create the slug here, which is going to be Sunny Unified School District
with the dashes between.
And then when I put my cursor in the category box link text, it's going to automatically
populate what it's going to show on the tab.
Now I'm just gonna add a random widget that was created, not school related, just so we
have something here.
I'm going to choose school district from my categories and my parent page is going to
be the county, so we're going to publish that page.
Now that's our school district page.
Now we want to create our elementary page, so let's go ahead and do that elementary school,
get our slug.
Add our widget.
And we're going to choose elementary school for our category.
Our parent page is now going to be the school district and publish.
Let's go ahead and create
Sunny Middle School.
This time we're going to choose middle school.
And again, our parent page is the school district and publish.
Then lastly, we're going to create our high school page.
Sunny High School and our parent page is the district.
So now we'll be able to go to our locations page.
So I'm going to visit the site to check this out.
Go to our locations where we see our county, and you'll see there is your browse by school
district.
Here's our school district we created and of course there would be others populating
out as you create. and then our our school district page.
You could see we have the elementary, high school, and middle school tabs that have those
schools listed.
Now, you can leave it this way if you like, or if you want them in order, how it would
be typically in order elementary, middle, then high school.
That's very simple to fix.
What you're going to want to do is edit the showcase page for your school district because
that's this page right here.
I'm going to go right up here to edit, showcase, and I'm going to go down to the bottom right
here where it says BREW showcase options, and what I'm gonna do is add a category box
here for elementary school.
Then I'm going to add another one for middle school and then I want to add the last one
for high school and that's going to put them in the correct order.
So, let's update our page.
Let's view, and as you can see now we have them in the typical order elementary, middle
school, high school.
Now, we can go back to our county and our school district.
So that's how you would build out your school pages, your school showcase pages.
