Making star Harry Kane captain is a hinderance: Jordan Henderson MUST take England armband
Tottenham star Harry Kane should not be England captain. But its now time for Gareth Southgate to close the book on his capacity conundrum and hand the armband to Jordan Henderson.
Tottenham superstar Kane led England out at Wembley and netted a 94th-minute tap-in to rescue a 1-0 victory over Slovenia in drab encounter, sealing the Three Lions' place in Russia next summer.
With Wayne Rooney no longer in the England fold, the captain's armband is up for grabs. Southgate's squad is currently lacking stand out options and Kane was probably their best player against Slovenia in a turgid match.
But the victory should be the last time the Spurs forward is made skipper.
Kane, for all his talent, heart and skill, is too inexperienced at doing the job, especially on a stage such as a World Cup. Burdening him with the rigours of international captaincy could be a detriment rather than a boost.
The 24-year-old handled himself well against Slovenia, his performance level was good in a tricky game and he continued his fine scoring run.
But why, when it comes to Russia, take the risk of messing him up? Kane is simply Englands best player.
Dele Alli is superb, Marcus Rashfords talent is seemingly boundless and the Three Lions boast some of the finest full backs around. But Kane is a step above the whole squad, a genuine world-class striker.
He does, however, have virtually no captaincy experience and being England skipper is a tough job, capable of crippling even the very best.
Gareth Southgate should give the England armband to Liverpool star Jordan Henderson.
Press conference after press conference, question after question, the eyes of pundits, fans and the media are on you 24/7. And in the build up to a World Cup, the spotlight and scrutiny is all the more intense.
When Southgate has a talent as good as Kane, he would be wise to not hinder him with extra pressure. England need their star forward to be content and focused at the World Cup.
We saw at the Euro 2016 just how bad the Three Lions can be with a misfiring Kane. Southgate should instead look to his England engine room and hand Henderson the duties.
The 27-year-old is the occupier of the armband at one of world football's most demanding clubs - Liverpool.
He has to deal with the pressure week in, week out and would be able to cope with the task at the World Cup next summer. Chelsea's Gary Cahill would be another suitable option.
Henderson did not have his best game against Slovenia nor is he a world beater but given England's current lack of quality midfielders, he'll start in Russia, like it or not.
Handing him the captaincy could spur him on to produce his best and help England tick while freeing up Kane to do what he does best - score goals.
Had Kane been given the captaincy at the start of the qualifiers than that would have made a difference.
A ten-game run of competitive matches would have given him the chance to get to grips with how to handle all that comes with the job.
But to thrust this unnecessary stress on him now could well see Englands star man fall flat in Russia and see any hope of the Three Lions enjoying a successful tournament disintegrate once again.
