Waching daily Oct 2 2017

Good day everyone, I am Jason Swee.

In the next 3 mins I would like to introduce you guys

the everyday challenges and joy as an SUTD engineering leader,

as well as, my main motivation for this seminar.

By the end of this video, I promise you guys that

you would like to meet me at the International seminar.

Let's go

As a participant in this seminar,

my main motivation is to learn from other engineering leaders

around the world to hear what they have to share.

This seminar is a great platform for leaders to share (the) problems

they face, steps that they took in response, and from (the) results,

discuss what they could have done better next time.

The importance to me in this seminar, is really to understand what problems

people had and how I could connect my community to people

around the world via this seminar.

Based on the initiatives and projects I have done or still in progress,

I hope to be a candidate for the Leadership, Innovation and

Entrepreneurship category.

As a first year student (at) SUTD I am proud to present a few projects

I have done and led.

Firstly, we have RISK WATCH

What's RW

RW is a wearable prototype you see here

RW aims at detecting the wakefulness of drivers on the road,

and attempt to wake them up if they are falling asleep.

So using very simple electronics like Arduino, flex sensors, buzzers, LEDs (and etc)

We are (able) to detect the wakefulness

of the user and stimulate them to wake up.

Using additive manufacturing like 3D printers and other technology

We are able to produce different forms of RW, and using different forms,

we (can achieve) better usability

Here we have the wearable wrist version, subsequently, we enhanced to glove version.

This product is well received by the

the local and abroad media, The Straits Times, Vulcan Post (and etc)

Next up, I will introduce to you SOAR, and Let's go!

Let me introduce to you SOAR SOAR is a student club I founded

last year, focusing on Autonomous Robotics In SOAR, we have done many projects which

I am proud to present it to you guys, some of them are still in progress

Firstly, we have this AGV call Waiter robot Waiter Robot is a 40kg to 100Kg payload carrier

It aims to be autonomously navigating, and localising itself in a human environment,

delivering goods.

We are (deeply honoured) to be collaborating with Intel and DSO.

In competitions, we have project like this.

(STRIDER) aims is to improve The safety and the manoeuvrability

of the (existing) walker for the elderlies.

We hope to give you good news during the seminar of our (finals) results in September.

Next, we have Hack a jeep

H-a-J is a project led by one of (SOAR EXCO) member(Tian Lerk)

We installed buttons and joystick(and safety seats)

to existing toy jeeps to replace the steering wheel

to allow children with Cerebral Palsy to use them with ease.

I really hope you enjoyed these projects, of what we have done

and how we contributed back to society. Let me know any ideas and feedbacks

and I hope to see you soon!

Other than SOAR and projects I presented I also enjoy sports like cycling and scuba diving

I hope Chile has a dive site that I can visit.

I am an advanced diver. (Do) feel free to contact me.

Unfortunately, this is the end of the video, and I hope you enjoyed the video (and the) projects I presented.

If you have any questions, do contact me I would (love) to meet you guys at the International seminar

See you guys there!

Ward F, Yemi Philip - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:49.

My goal is to bring targeted research-based approach,

fact finding-based approach to the board.

And I think that if we have business plans that

are well-thought out that reflects a great consultation.

That reflects input from the community.

And we will be able to eventually reach

our goal together.

I've worked as a lawyer and negotiation has

been one of the skills I've acquired

in the course of doing so.

Being able to balance competing interests of people,

I think that that would be very useful for this board, that

will be able to work collaboratively

to ensure that we meet our target, which is ensuring

that we have quality educational outcome for our students.

Ward D, Trisha Estabrooks - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:56.

To me, it's really important that the nine school board

trustees that are elected on October 16th

work collaboratively and that they work as a team.

And I'm fully aware that not everyone around that table

is going to always agree.

And that's OK.

I mean, we're there to represent the interests

and the diverse views and opinions

of the families and the voters that we represent

within the city of Edmonton.

But again, I think if we look at it as a team approach,

and we're there to listen to the people that elect us,

I mean that truly is public service.

We are there to represent the voters who got us

into that elected position.

And if we're doing that, then we're

fulfilling our commitments that we

made when we decided to run for public office.

Again, though, it's important to work collaboratively

and to listen and to respect each other's viewpoints.

Ward A, Joseph Luri - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:53.

I like working with people to solve problems.

I will work collaboratively with the other trustees.

I will bring my bargaining and lobbying skills

so we can all work on the issues and bring

them to understand what I've come with on the table.

I will bring an understanding so that between us, we can all

focus on the important issues.

I will work as a team player.

And I look forward to working with all the trustees.

Ward I, Sherry Adams - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:52.

Trustees represent the voices of the public we serve.

Each trustee, with strengths, insights, experiences,

and passions that collectively strengthen

the effectiveness of the board.

From the past four years, I know how much

we can advance our goals with a good functioning board that

honors each other, values the gifts that each one brings,

and has the maturity to respect each other's differences.

As a board, we need to discern, clarify, evaluate,

and collaborate to bring the best outcomes for our kids.

I will keep at the heart of every decision

the success of children.

As a visionary leader, my heart is to advocate,

not only for the best education today,

but to envision what it will take to prepare

our students for decades ahead.

Thank you.

Ward F, Michael Janz - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 1:10.

As trustee for the last seven years,

I've navigated many complex challenges at the board table.

I've worked with different superintendents,

different administrations, different provincial

governments, different Regional School Boards.

I have worked with my colleagues to find ways to share values,

to build on areas of shared concern,

and to make sure that we can continue to serve kids.

Governance is my expertise.

That's what I've been doing.

And I appreciate the contributions of my colleagues

as we continue to build on making our public education

system even better.

I learned this back at the University,

sometimes the best ways to solve problems

is to pick up your coffee cup and to walk down the hall.

And see what you can do by rolling up your sleeves

and collaborating with your colleagues.

So I've had the experience as your trustee

for the last seven years.

I've been the board chair for two.

I wouldn't have been that role without the support

of my colleagues.

And I'm very fortunate that they honored me with that position.

So I built the trust.

I built the trust of the community.

I built the trust of the district.

And I'm running again to continue the good work

that we've been doing and to build on these strengths

and to make sure all kids can be successful.

Ward E, Ken Gibson - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:42.

It's important that trustees remember

that we are elected to serve all students

and consider all perspectives.

It's not about coming in with a pet agenda.

In order to be successful, nine trustees

have to come together and share values and priorities

in moving forward to support our students.

In so doing, I was successful in moving

a personal passion, Career Pathways,

forward as part of the district's strategic plan.

Ward A, Perry Chahal - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 1:06.

The only way to advance our goals

is ward A. Within a system that's

democratic and represents more than one voice, that has nine,

we have to be straightforward, honest, and blunt.

Right now ward A is the least likely to get anything.

We are the ugly duckling of the family.

We have not received any new schools,

yet we have had schools shut down.

We've had classroom sizes hemorrhage.

What I would do is being blunt and how

I've handled other governments.

Talk to them.

Form a consensus that we need to be first for once.

Our children need a place to go to school.

Our children need resources.

Your children need a place to learn.

As a parent, as a taxpayer, as an educator, as an employer,

we need to make sure that our priorities are first.

And I will advocate I'm ahead of any other ward

to assure that we're not last anymore.

At least we're going to be talked to.

Ward H, Nathan Ip - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:53.

I think over the course of this last term

I've demonstrated that I take a collaborative approach.

And in my role as trustee, the reality is that we cannot work

in silos and so I really believe in building strong

relationships with my colleagues and frankly with all

stakeholders, with parents, with community members and to ensure

that they are being listened to and that their points of views

are being considered.

And that's my commitment, certainly, to my role

and I hope that I can play a part in bringing people

together because at the end of the day,

we're all here for the same goal and that's

the success of all kids.

And so, in order to achieve that goal,

we need to make sure that we all work together.

Ward G, Tyler Duce - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:33.

As trustee, I will always take a principled stance

on every issue and every motion put forward to the board.

I will make sure that, first and foremost,

all of our efforts and time and energy

are focused on providing world class

outcomes in the fundamentals of education,

in taking care of every taxpayer dollar that we have.

And I'm putting families first in education.

I will always take that principled stance.

Ward D, Tamie Perryment - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 1:03.

I don't believe that it's my goals that need to be advanced.

I believe that it's the community goals that

need to be on the table.

So I think it's important to ensure

that there be communication from the community to the board

and from the board to the community.

It would be my role in order to ensure

that I develop relationships with the other trustees.

That I hear what their positions are as well.

I'm not afraid of differences, I actually

think differences make us better.

I think that the school board already

has quite a few strategies, plans,

and policies, which I support.

And that is why I'm running for this position.

So I see that my particular things that I see as important

are already on the platform and I think

they represent the community.

Ward D, Jeff Behrens - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:55.

I think working with the board is primarily

about open and collaborative communication.

I think there's this understanding in politics

that you have to make secret dealings

or that you have to game some kind of system.

But I think transparency is the way for a nine-person board

to really excel in this community

and in this environment.

I think being clear with your goals, and trying to reach out

and to understand the goals of the other trustees

and really build common frameworks of understanding

and build the bridges that allow both of you to succeed.

I think that there is a lot of opportunity with the people

that are running to build a really

good common platform, building our new strategic plan

next year.

So I think primarily, again, it's about being open,

being transparent, and being honest with what you want,

and forgetting that stereotype of broken, back-door politics

that perhaps we've seen in the past.

Ward D, Kevin O'Connor - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:33.

I believe I've provided a response to this question

in my previous responses.

I will focus on presence before practice,

and I will bring that to the board, Discussion

and Decision Making.

Thank you for watching this video.

Thank you for taking the time to research

and make a good decision about who

will be the best trustee for your children

and their learning.

Ward C, Shelagh Dunn - How will you advance your goals for the next three years? - Duration: 0:51.

As one of nine trustees, I would take my vote very seriously.

And in terms of advancing my goals,

I think that collaborative relationships is

the best way to move forward.

So I would want to work collaboratively

with other trustees, with MLEs, with the city of Edmonton,

where possible, and particularly,

work collaboratively with stakeholders--

so parents, students, teachers, and staff,

and community members.

One thing I'd like to do is reestablish a ward council

in Ward C, where parents from the parent councils of all

of the schools can meet with me on a regular basis, talk

about the concerns that are happening in their schools,

and where I can talk with them about things that are going on

at a district level.

I think that that helps to move things forward.
