year.
The 200-meter is his most successful event, with three Olympic titles and four World titles.
In 2011, he was eliminated from the 100-meter competition due to a false start.
At the 2012 London Olympics, he won the 100-meter gold medal with a time of 9.63 seconds, improving
upon his own Olympic record and defending his gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
With this win, Bolt became the first man to defend an Olympic sprint title since Carl
Lewis in 1988.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Bolt won the 100-meter gold medal with a time of 9.81 seconds, making
him the first in history to win the event three consecutive times.
Due to multiple injuries, Bolt announced his intention to retire from athletics after the
2017 World Championships.
Bolt is the most successful athlete of the World Championships, and is the first to win
three titles, the 100-, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay, at three consecutive Olympic games,
from 2008 to 2016; however, he lost one of the gold medals due to a doping offence by
one of his teammates.
Bolt has received the fitting media nickname, "Lightening Bolt" and has been given multiple
awards throughout his athletic career, including IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Track & Field
Athlete of the Year and Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
