How to become fluent in a foreign language, in English in our case
How to become a fluent speaker of English?
Fluent is such a hot word nowadays, everybody on the Internet is promising to make you fluent
here is my 2 cents/opinion
First we need to define the word fluent.
I use the definition given by Cambridge Dictionary
when a person is fluent, they can speak a language easily, well, quickly and without many pauses
The first thing you need to do is ask yourself Are you a fluent speaker of your native language?
do you speak your mother tongue easily, well, quickly and without many pauses?
it is not possible to be fluent in a foreign language/English, and not be fluent in
your native language first.
Don't blame the foreign language alone for your lack of fluency
your second language fluency is likely to mirror your first language fluency
this was the first condition for fluency
to be fluent in English you have to be fluent in your native language first
Second condition for fluency is to read a lot, yes you heard me right, read a lot
lots of reading and listening practice, it's what we call input, but mainly reading.
Many people blame their poor language fluency on their lack of speaking practice.
let me let you in on a secret: speaking is overrated
the reason why you don't speak English fluently is because you don't read enough
read and listen
Just consider how long it takes a child to start speaking somewhat fluently
at least 6-7 years of intensive listening
reading can shorten that time, it's the 1 huge advantage adults have over children
we can start reading English texts from day 1
The third condition for speaking fluency is to use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries,
read a lot and use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries every time you come across a new word
As I said, everybody is making videos about how to become fluent
the most popular fluency video by far is titled Get fluent with 1 trick - become a confident
English speaker with this simple trick by one Drew Badger and the simple trick is
to learn English like native speakers
learn English like a native speaker, what the hell does this mean?
how can a 30-year old learn English like a native speaker, wait to be reborn in an
English speaking country with English speaking parents, go to English only school
the most popular English learning video on YouTube
help me understand, I am simultaneously discouraged and encouraged by this video
ask yourself this simple question:
what does a native English speaker like Drew know about how to become fluent in English ?
It's like Shaquille O'Neal teaching you how to dunk
I would much rather Allen Iverson taught me how to dunk
Allen:183cm, 75 kg Shaq: 216cm, 155 kg
I bet Drew's Japanese isn't as fluent, he should make a video to demonstrate how his
1 simple trick helped him learn a foreign language Japanese in his case
you won't see that video
learn English like native speakers, native speakers never use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries
so many fluency videos on the Internet and nobody talks about Monolingual Dictionaries
why? because native speakers don't have to use Monolingual Learner's Dictionaries
the last condition for speaking fluency is of course speaking
but make no mistake
in order to make a single sentence in English you have to have read at least 10 pages in English
That's my 2 cents/opinion, for what is worth, after all all I've done is become fluent in English,
here I am speaking English fluently and confidently
as I said, I am both discouraged and encouraged by videos like the 1 simple trick video
discouraged because I truly, honestly don't understand why the 11 million views
and encouraged because there is room for some real, helpful stuff on the internet

THIS WEEK SAW NASA ASTRONAUTS SHANE KIMBROUGH
AND PEGGY WHITSON WORKING TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL HOURS
IN THE VACUUM OF SPACE.
THEY SUCCESSFULLY SWAPPED IN AN UPGRADED COMPUTER RELAY BOX
WHICH GIVES MISSION CONTROL ACCESS AND DATA FROM A BUNCH
OF SYSTEMS ON THE OUTSIDE PART OF STATION.
THEY REMOVED A COVER AND PLUGGED IN CABLES
ON PRESSURIZED MATING ADAPTER-3, WHICH WAS JUST MOVED
OVER THE WEEKEND AND WILL BE A FUTURE DOCKING PORT
FOR COMMERCIAL CREW SPACECRAFT.
AND THEY INSTALLED SHIELDING FOR THE NOW EMPTY PORT ON NODE 3,
AND SOME SHIELDING ON PMA-3.
AND WITH THIS BEING WHITSON'S EIGHTH SPACEWALK,
SHE NOW HOLDS THE RECORD FOR MOST SPACEWALKS
BY A FEMALE ASTRONAUT.
EVEN WITH ANOTHER SPACEWALK, THE CREW FOUND THE TIME
FOR SOME ADVANCED SPACE SCIENCE.
PEGGY WHITSON SET UP HARDWARE FOR THE ACE-T-1 EXPERIMENT,
WHICH IS INVESTIGATING COLLOIDS, OR TINY SUSPENDED PARTICLES.
THE PARTICULAR PARTICLES USED IN THIS EXPERIMENT ARE REFERRED
TO AS JANUS PARTICLES,
NAMED AFTER THE TWO FACED ROMAN GOD JANUS
BECAUSE THESE PARTICLES POSSESS TWO DISTINCT TYPES
OF PROPERTIES: ONE HALF OF THEIR SURFACE INTRACTS
WITH WATER WHILE THE OTHER HALF REPELS IT.
STUDYING THESE IN SPACE HELPS SCIENTISTS UNDERSTAND THEIR

FOR THE ASTRONAUTS TO MOVE AROUND WHILE WORKING
IN THE VACUUM OF SPACE.
THEY DO LIGHT EXERCISE AFTER GETTING SUITED
UP TO REMOVE EXTRA NITROGEN FROM THEIR BLOOD,
WHICH HELPS THEM AVOID DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS,
OR THE BENDS AS ANY SCUBA DIVERS MIGHT CALL IT.
AT THE END OF THE SPACEWALK,
THEY GRADUALLY RAISE THE PRESSURE INSIDE THE AIRLOCK
TO AVOID THINGS LIKE POPPING EARS BUT IT CAN HAPPEN.

How to Convert Sketchup Materials to Vray Materials | Vray 3.4 for Sketchup (Quick Tip) - Duration: 2:53.
What's happening ladies and gentlemen,
this is Minh from Architecture Inspirations.
Today I'm going to show you how to
quickly convert Sketchup Materials to Vray Materials.
Let's get started.
When you download a model from 3D warehouse,
the materials that come with it might not
look great when it's rendered
since it's just Sketchup Materials.
But with the new version of Vray,
you can easily turn those Sketchup materials
into Vray Materials.
Here's how to do it.
The first thing I'm going to do
is turn on Vray Interactive Rendering,
so I can see the changes in real time.
Next, I'll press B to bring up the Paint Bucket tool
or I just click on this icon here.
Then I'll use this eye dropper tool
to sample the paint that I want to change.
Now you will see that material selected on the list.
With that material selected,
now go on to the Quick Settings Tab.
Then you can click on this button
and you'll see is a list of different presets
that you can use to convert your materials.
Since we are looking for a car paint material,
I'll just select Car Paint.
Now pay close attention to the frame buffer window
because the white solid material
will now change into a new material
that looks more like car paint.
I can even go in here and use the region render tool
to make Vray focus on one particular area.
There we go, you can see it better now.
Let's test it on another material.
Make sure you are using the Paint Bucket tool,
now you can just hold Alt and Left click
the material you want to change.
Then you'll see that material selected on the list.
Now go to the Quick Settings tab
and change to the preset that you want.
For this black car paint,
you can see that it has the default blue flakes,
but I don't really like it
so I can go over here
and change it to white like so.
You can even change the flake density,
scale, size, etc.
Just adjust it to your liking!
Now I think I'm going to change
the material of the rim as well.
I can sample it, then go to Quick Settings,
change it to, say, a Plastic Material.
Then I can reduce the reflection
and glossiness with these sliders here.
Alternatively, I can use materials
from the built-in library
to replace an existing material in the model
like for these tires.
I can first go to the library
and find a material that I want to use,
like this plastic leather material,
and then drag and drop it here
to add it to the list.
Also, remember that you can change
the way you see materials
with these buttons here.
Now right click that material and select copy.
Then go to the material that you want to replace,
and right click it to paste the plastic material here
There you go, it looks better now.
And that's all guys,
you can repeat those steps to fine tune it even more
but that's the gist of it.

Putin Addresses Arctic International Forum: There is no potential for conflict in the Arctic - Duration: 7:41.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
Mr Niinisto, Mr Johannesson,
I wholeheartedly welcome all of you to Russia, to Arkhangelsk.
It is the second time that Arkhangelsk is hosting The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue international forum.
This is symbolic, because Arkhangelsk is closely connected with the events and individuals that have opened the polar latitudes to the world.
We will mark one of such "polar" events this year.
I am referring to the 85th anniversary of the famous Otto Schmidt expedition,
which for the first time covered the route from the port of Arkhangelsk to the Pacific Ocean within one navigation season,
launching regular navigation along the coast of Siberia, the legendary Northern Sea Route.
The importance of the Arctic has increased manifold.
The attention of many nations is focused on the Arctic as a region whose wellbeing determines the global climate,
a treasure trove of unique nature and, of course, a region with a huge economic potential and opportunities.
Preserving the Arctic as a territory of constructive dialogue, development and equal cooperation is a matter of fundamental importance.
This forum, whose theme this year is People and the Arctic, has a great role to play in this.
The forum has brought together respected academics, business leaders and politicians and has become a venue for serious professional discussions of the current situation and the future of the Arctic, as we hoped it would.
The forum is important for promoting different forms of Arctic partnership.
Your expert views and initiatives are also taken into account at the Arctic Council, which has over the past 20 years served as an example of effective international cooperation that continues unabated by external change.
Russia, which accounts for approximately a third of the Arctic zone, is aware of its special responsibility for this territory.
We aim to ensure its sustainable development, create a modern infrastructure, develop natural resources, strengthen the industrial potential,
improve the quality of life for the indigenous Northern people, maintain their unique culture and traditions and provide government assistance towards these goals.
However, these goals must not be viewed separately from the task of preserving the biological diversity and the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic.
It is gratifying that the protection of the Arctic environment is a key priority of international cooperation in this region, including research cooperation.
I would like to remind you of one more important date in Arctic history: the 80th anniversary of the Soviet drifting ice station North Pole.
Its traditions have been taken up by the Russian drift station Barneo, which is home to researchers from around the world.
Academic cooperation and the exchange of experience and programmes are extremely important, considering the large-scale plans for the development of this region, particularly within large international projects.
A recent positive example is the Yamal LNG project, which is being implemented by seven countries.
Russia believes that there is no potential for conflict in the Arctic. International law clearly specifies the rights of littoral and other states and provides a firm foundation for cooperation in addressing various issues,
including such sensitive ones as the delimitation of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean and the prevention of unregulated high seas fishing in the Central Arctic Ocean,
which is surrounded by the exclusive economic zones of the United States, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Russia.
I would like to reiterate that Russia is open to constructive cooperation and does its utmost to create a proper environment for its effective development.
We have drafted a fairly extensive economic programme for the Arctic designed for many years to come.
It already includes over 150 projects with investments estimated at trillions of rubles.
First, we will support the initiatives that have a multiplier effect for the Arctic regions and our country in general,
including public-private partnerships and what is known as core development areas, which we treat not just as territories,
but primarily as a set of coordinated and complementary projects, as well as state support tools.
These and many other activities will be included in the revised state programme for the development of the Russian Arctic.
In particular, it deals with forming a block of modern research and technological solutions designed specifically for the harsh Arctic conditions,
improving the environmental monitoring system and developing offshore deposits.
We pay special attention to the Northern Sea Route, which I mentioned earlier in my remarks.
Changes in the ice situation and the availability of new up-to-date vessels makes it an almost year-round artery, at least, it will become one in the near future.
It will be an effective and reliable transport corridor with great potential for the Russian and global economies.
I have already instructed the Government to work through the issues of creating a separate entity, which will be in charge of the integrated development of the Northern Sea Route
and contiguous core areas, including infrastructure, hydrography, security, management, and all associated services.
We invite our foreign colleagues to make active use of the opportunities offered by the Northern Sea Route,
which will cut transportation costs and delivery time for goods between Europe and Asia.
However, we are well aware that for that corridor to be competitive, all-purpose, and usable by carriers of all types of goods ranging
from bulk cargo to containerised freight, transport companies must enjoy the most favourable terms that meet the latest international standards.
In closing, I would like to thank all the participants for their participation in the constructive discussion of the Arctic issues, and their passion with regard to its future.
Special thanks go to my colleagues – the President of Finland and the President of Iceland – who took the time out of their busy schedules and attended today's forum in person.
Such a broad and authoritative international representation is a good sign of the political will of the Arctic and other states to preserve the Arctic as a territory of peace,
stability and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Trump Erases Job Protections for LGBT Workers: March 31 Debrief - Duration: 3:27.
Just this week the Trump administration revoked job protections for LGBT workers, kept queer
people off of the Census, and started dismantling the Office of Civil Rights.
Plus, North Carolina just repealed its bathroom ban -- and then replaced it with something
even worse.
First up: the census.
Why does it matter so much?
Well, it's used to allocate billions of dollars in spending, and also to determine whether
policies are helping or hurting various different groups.
For years, LGBT advocates have been pushing for the census to ask about sexual orientation,
so we can know how many queer people there are in the country, where they live, and how
laws affect them.
And for a moment, that was going to happen at last, with a draft version including a
question on sexual orientation.
And then, it was removed -- it was an error, they said.
In other words, sorry LGBT Americans, you literally don't count.
Also this week, Donald revoked an order that protected LGBT employees of federal contractors.
Under Obama-era rules, contractors had to prove that they weren't discriminating against
LGBT workers in order to get federal money.
Now that requirement has been eliminated, so companies can get federal money without
having to prove anything.
So what does this mean?
Well, there are as many as 28 million people working for federal contractors, and since
we don't have census data we don't know how many are LGBT.
But now companies can fire them, or pay them less, or deny them work and still get taxpayer
dollars.
And there's more: Donald just appointed a new head of the Office of Civil Rights at
Health and Human Services.
This office protects health care privacy, trains employees on what is and isn't discrimination,
and investigates complaints when someone's civil rights are violated.
So who did he appoint?
Roger Severino, who opposes marriage equality, says health providers should be able to refuse
service to queer people, and doesn't think anyone should have to acknowledge the existence
of trans people.
People count on the OCR to protect them from civil rights violations.
And now, the office is being run by a guy who says that LGBT people don't deserve equal
treatment.
This means the Office of Civil Rights might not respect marriage between same-sex couples,
could support doctors who refuse to treat LGBT patients, and could make it harder for
trans people to access treatment.
Meanwhile, North Carolina is finally moving toward repealing the "trans bathroom ban"
HB2.
But they're replacing it with something worse: a bill that blocks any city from creating
a trans-inclusive bathroom policy without getting permission from the legislature -- and
since the legislature definitely isn't going to give its permission, this will continue
to prevent trans people from using bathrooms in public spaces like schools, courthouses,
and government jobs.
It means that trans people can't fully participate in public places.
Plus it bans any new LGBT nondiscrimination laws, even at the local level, for the next
three years.
Republicans are calling it a compromise, but banning nondiscrimination is just a way of
continuing discrimination.
So this so-called compromise repeals HB2 in name only, and then goes on harm even more
people.
Equality North Carolina isn't giving up on repealing these laws but they will need your
help.
This week's action item: go to EqualityNC.org where you can donate or volunteer to help
them continue to fight for equal access to facilities.
