The Most Powerful Family You've Never Heard Of - Duration: 6:58.
The Most Powerful Family Youve Never Heard Of
by Alex Thomas
History is full of powerful families that have left their mark on the political and
economic systems of their age. During the Italian Renaissance, there were the Borgias
and Medicis. In the United States, a number of families have realized America is not only
the land of opportunity but also the land of wealth and dynastic power. Weve had
the Astors and Rockefellers, and even the Rothschilds have a foothold in the American
power system.
More recently, the Koch brothers have drawn attention to themselves, and though Charles
and David generally try to avoid the spotlight, their fingerprints are all over the political
system. Apparently, its tough to be the mysterious Wizard of Oz when youve bankrolled
half the politicians in the Emerald City. Though theyve historically backed Republicans,
the pair has also opposed President Trump. Only last week, when the administrations
Obamacare repeal died before a vote, it was brought down by the Freedom Caucus, a group
of congressmen loyal to the Freedom Partners, a political arm of the billionaires.
However, under the Trump administration, a new family is entering the generally cemented
world of D.C. power-grabbing. The Mercer family is headed by Robert Mercer, who the New Yorker
characterized as a reclusive Long Island hedge-fund manager, who has become a major
force behind the Trump Presidency. And while Mercer is still a relatively new face
on the scene, hes been building his influence for several years. Like a brilliant chess
player, he has been placing his pieces exactly where they can inflict the most damage.
The Mercer patriarch is constantly described as a brilliant but reclusive computer scientist.
He made a considerable portion of his wealth as CEO of the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies.
In their profile of him, The Guardian wrote that Mercer very rarely speaks in public
and never to journalists. I asked a handful of D.C. contacts, people usually quite willing
to talk to me as a journalist, for more information about the family and was met with a wave of
the hand or a refusal to go on record even to be quoted as an anonymous source.
As The Guardian noted, Mercer is a hard man to find, and so to gauge his beliefs you
have to look at where he channels his money. Last week, the family appeared at a conference
in Washington D.C. sponsored by the Heartland Institute, an organization they pumped over
$5 million into between 2008 and 2015. It is best known for its efforts to deny climate
change. The Washington Post sent reporters to that conference, but unsurprisingly, the
Mercers (Robert and his daughter Rebekah) refused interviews.
In their report, the Post noted a number of familiar and prominent faces in the audience,
including Myron Ebell, a scientist who has become the go-to man for climate change denial.
Ebell even led President Trumps EPA transition team.
Mercer was influential in putting President Trump in the White House, pumping millions
into GOP super PACs. The New Yorkers profile of him even paints him as a man who endorses
the sort of fringe theories that are common on alt-right sites like Infowars or Gateway
Pundit. A colleague stated that Mercer insisted at a staff luncheon that Clinton
had participated in a secret drug-running scheme with the C.I.A (though the C.I.A.
has played a role in drug schemes in the past, evidence of this particular theory is shaky
at best). In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Trump declared, The Mercers are
incredible people who truly love this country and go all out to protect America and everything
it stands for.
The Mercers success arises from the familys ability to invest their money in the most
strategic pockets and come out big. While most Democrats and old school conservatives
were busy funding think tanks and pumping their cash into candidates, the Mercers put
their money into Breitbart, the news organization that has become synonymous with the Trump
presidency. The Wall Street Journal reported that shortly after Steve Bannon met Mercer,
Mr. Bannon drew up a business plan and term sheet under which the Mercer family bought
nearly 50% of Breitbart News for $10 million. Bannon is the former chair of Breitbart news
and now a top White House strategist who is widely seen as the most powerful man in Washington.
Despite their hefty backing, Breitbart has struggled to be recognized as a legitimate
news organization in Washington DC. Though they have a number of very talented reporters,
their top correspondent in the capitol is seen by many traditional journalists as a
bad joke. On Monday, Breitbart was passed over for a Congressional press pass, which
would have minted them as big league. Politico reported that the reason for the Committee
of Correspondents denial was members were not satisfied with the information provided
thus far regarding the right-wing websites connections to the White House and the Republican
mega-donor family the Mercers.
Nevertheless, it seems the Mercer familys influence in Washington is only beginning.
Amid the rise of populism, they have funded all the right players. With their funding
of climate change denial, they are eager to see regulations rolled back. Under President
Trump, theres a fair chance that will happen. They put their money behind Breitbart, which
is among the most powerful news outlets in the nation and has the ear of the White House.
The Washington Post reported that the family had pumped millions into The Media Research
Center, which is a right-leaning media watchdog. Theyve contributed to The Federalist Society
and The Heritage Foundation both conservative think tanks with huge influences on politicians.
If the family continues to play their hand this well, theyre sure to continue shaking
up Washington D.C.

Britain's divorce from European Union begins - Duration: 2:15.
After 44 years in the European Union, Britain is officially on its way out.
A letter starting the divorce proceedings was delivered on Wednesday to leaders in Brussels.
That gives the sides two years to negotiate the terms of Brexit.
Kim Mok-yeon has the latest.
Some 280 days after British voters decided to leave the European Union, the UK has formally
invoked Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
"So here it is.
Six pages.
The notification from Prime Minister Theresa May triggering Article 50 and formally starting
the negotiations of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union."
"No turning back" is what Prime Minister May told parliament after Britain's EU ambassador
handed the letter of notice to the President of the European Council.
"This is an historic moment from which there can be no turning back.
Britain in leaving the European Union.
We are going to make our own decisions and our own laws."
The move triggers a two year period to negotiate the terms of the withdrawal before Britain
will leave in late March 2019.
This will include tough talks on trade, security and immigration, among numerous other issues.
On the legislation side, the British government is set to publish the details of the Great
Repeal Bill on Thursday which will end the primacy of EU law in the UK.
The bill is expected to replace EU legislation with UK equivalents, after which the government
will decide over a period of time which parts to keep, change or remove.
Talks with EU countries are expected to begin by May or June.
Any deals reached during these negotiations will have to be voted on by both the British
and European parliaments and the European Council in Brussels.
The two year timeline can be extended if all EU member nations unanimously agree, but such
a scenario is considered unlikely.
If nothing is agreed within the two years, then the UK will automatically leave the bloc
and all existing EU deals will no longer apply to Britain.

Is Colin Kaepernick being blackballed by the NFL? - Duration: 8:53.
Is Colin Kaepernick being blackballed by the NFL?
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is still looking for a job this offseason, and Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that he believes Kaepernick will return to a starting role at some point in the 2017 season. Harbaugh also scoffed at the notion that Kaepernick is being blackballed by teams due to his polarizing national anthem protest.
On Wednesdays episode of Undisputed, Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe reacted to Harbaughs comments. .
Charles LeClaire Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports John Harbaugh: Kaepernick is going to start somewhere next year "I would never use a generic, stupid term like that to describe a more complicated type of a situation.
I'm just generally speaking, I just think it's too easy, it's intellectually lazy. To me, I think it's more nuanced, you know? I think, yeah, I absolutely think he's going to get signed.
I think he'll probably be starting somewhere next year at some point in time during the season. And I agree with Jim, I think he'll be winning games for people.
And because he can win games for people, I think he's going to be playing for somebody. . Roger Goodell: I have not heard that this is an issue .
SHANNON SHARPE.
Joe Camporeale Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports Coaches and owners are all about protecting the shield "This is what I know.
I played 14 years in the National Football League, and I've been covering the National Football League since 2004 once I retired. So I've been, one way or another, watching as a fan, playing or covering this league for over 35 years.
Coaches and owners will always protect that NFL logo. They always will.
No matter how coaches feel about one another, no matter how owners feel about one another - when it comes time for protecting and making sure everything looks great on the inside, from the outside appearance, they will protect that.".
Harbaugh should be concerned solely for his own team "It is stupid, and I think it is lazy, but it also is intellectually lazy for John Harbaugh [to speak on behalf of other teams].
Skip, when I played, the coaches told me - every coach i played for - said 'look, worry about what we're doing in Denver.' 'Worry about what we're doing in Baltimore.
The coaches always said 'I don't care what they're doing over there.
I worry about us.' So now John Harbaugh is a coach for the Baltimore Ravens, and he has a great idea of what the other 31 teams are doing. How does he know? I'm not saying he's getting blackballed.
I'm not saying, for whatever reason, he hasn't picked a team yet. Or a team hasn't reached out to Colin and said 'we think you can help us.' I've been hearing a lot of what John Harbaugh said at the end.
I lot of people I've talked to believe that Colin will get a call, and there's a great chance that he'll be starting somewhere this year.".
My message for Joe Thomas "Now let's go to something that we didn't show. Joe Thomas went on Uninterrupted and he addressed Skip and I directly.
Skip, I'm about to do something I haven't done since I retired and I've gotten into television. I'm going to address a current player as a former player.
Because I never wanted for me to be a topic, I don't want 'Hall of Famer lashes out at Joe Thomas,' that's not what this is about.
And after today, I'm going to be done with this conversation publicly with Joe Thomas. He said, on his Twitter, that he loves engaging his fans, and so do I.
And he said he views a distraction as any time players have to address something about a [teammate] that's not football related.
He views Colin Kaepernick as a distraction, and my point to him was… Josh Gordon came to his team. Josh Gordon was at Baylor University, he got suspended from Baylor because he flunked so many drug tests.
He transferred to Utah, he couldn't step on the field because he couldn't pass a drug test.
So he came into the league, quote unquote as Joe says, as a 'distraction.' Now, when you come to the National Football League, Skip, you get a clean slate.
What happened in your past, for the most part, stays back there. Within the first year, he had flunked three drug tests, he had to miss the first two games the following season.
Five suspensions [in total]. Joe Thomas and the Cleveland Browns' organization never said Josh Gordon was a distraction.".
Steve Mitchell Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports Why is Colin Kaepernick viewed as more of a negative than drug users? "They're labeling him as a 'distraction' as a negative term. See, that's the problem that I have.
You're labeling [Kaepernick] as a negative. He didn't miss any games. Josh Gordon missed games, caused you to lose games, probably. Johnny Manziel missed games, probably caused you to lose games. That's a distraction.".
SKIP BAYLESS.
Steve Mitchell Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports You have to evaluate the opinion of Kaepernick on a team-by-team basis "I'm trying to process the idea of 'blackballed.' That means, or suggests, that 32 owners colluded, and they all agreed 'nobody is going to sign Colin Kaepernick,' and that would have to be because of his anthem protests and the stance he has repeatedly taken.
Let's be clear about what that means, what 'blackballed' would mean. Do I think there's that operating individually from team to team, ownership to ownership? Yes, I do.
I'm with John Harbaugh when he says it's more complex than that, more nuanced than that. You have to sort of go team-by-team, owner-by-owner.
Who was offended by the anthem protest, who wasn't? Which GM was offended? So it starts to get more and more complex and complicated.".
Matt Kartozian Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports Kaepernick may be too smart for some owners to feel comfortable "Colin Kaepernick has too much mental capacity for a lot of owners because he's a threat.
Because he's a really bright man, who can be eloquent when he speaks of black history and how to apply it to the current black plight in America.

What is a Mentor? - Duration: 1:32.
Mentor is defined by Merriam-Webster as "someone who teaches or gives help to a less experienced
and often younger person".
The word is often used to describe someone who has a positive influence on someone.
You could say that being a mentor means making a commitment.
Being a mentor is a commitment to guide, educate, support, and encourage someone who is taking
responsibility for their own growth and development in the field.
Successful mentors often have: People skills, communication skills, management
skills, and supervisory skills The ability to work well with a team
Patience Charisma
Responsibility Availability
Experience and knowledge in the field Some of the things a mentor does include:
Help a protégé write their resume Contact a protégé with new job postings
or information Teach a protégé about the field in which
the mentor works Provide support and friendship to a protégé
Encourage a protégé's curiosity Provide feedback
Introduce a protégé to other people in the field
Meet regularly with a protégé to develop career goals and a plan for reaching them
While it takes work to maintain the integrity of a relationship with a protégé, many find
it very rewarding to be a mentor.

Ex-President Park attends arrest warrant hearing - Duration: 2:20.
The arrest warrant hearing for former President Park Geun-hye is still in session.
Our Hwang Ho-jun is standing by at the court with more.
Ho-jun Give us the details.
Devin.
The hearing has been going on for more than seven and half hours, with the judge hearing
arguments from both sides,... after which he'll review the case.
The next longest arrest warrant hearing since the system was introduced has been the second
arrest warrant hearing for Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jae-yong, which took about
seven and a half hours.
Park arrived here at 10:20 a.m., just eleven minutes after she left her private residence
in southern Seoul.
Court was adjourned for about an hour for lunch early in the afternoon, and then again
for 15 minutes at 4:20 p.m.
While the hearing is being held behind closed doors... it has been reported that in the
courtroom,... Park is sitting directly opposite the judge.
Her lawyers are to her right, as you can see on the graphic we have for you,... and prosecutors
seated to her left.
Park is facing 13 charges,... including that she colluded with her close confidante Choi
Soon-sil to extort tens of millions of dollars from conglomerates,... leaked confidential
presidential office documents to Choi... and ordered the creation of a blacklist of cultural
figures critical of the government.
Many of Park's alleged accomplices, including Choi, have already either been arrested or
jailed for their suspected involvement in the scandal.
Now, the big question is where Park will be held while the judge is in deliberation.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, observers are speculating she will be told to wait in
the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office -- because of its proximity to the court and
to minimize security concerns,... especially as there are at least 100 protesters demonstrating
against Park's arrest outside the court.
The court's ruling is expected to come out later tonight, or early tomorrow morning.
If the court grants the warrant, prosecutors will have up to 20 days to continue their
investigation and file formal charges against her.... and Park will become the country's
third former president to be arrested on criminal charges.
If she's convicted of receiving bribes,... she could be facing a minimum of ten years
behind bars.
Back to you, Devin.

What is a Parkinson's clinical trial? - Duration: 1:32.
Clinical trials test the safety
and effectiveness of new treatments
They are divided into phases
Each with a particular purpose
Phase one - test the safety of the treatment in healthy volunteers
Phase two - then check if the treatment
is effective in people with the condition
Phase three - look at the treatment in a larger group
over a longer period of time
It's vital that trials provide a fair test
That's why most include two groups
One receives the experimental treatment
And the other a placebo
An inactive version of the treatment that has no affect
But looks and feels exactly the same
In a double-blind trial
neither the researchers or the participants know who is getting what
At the end the researchers find out if
the treatment was more effective than the placebo
It can take years to get a treatment
all the way through
But today there are clinical trials underway all over the world
Testing the next generation of treatment for Parkinson's

Think Again!™ with Amit Varma – Over-population is a Problem - Duration: 1:50.
One of India's biggest problems
is our population:
too many people, too few resources.
To become a prosperous nation,
we must practice family planning.
Think again!
If population was really such a problem,
then you would expect the most densely
populated parts of the country
to be its poorest.
But in country after country
across the world,
its richest areas are its most densely
populated ones: its cities.
All of human history is a story of mass
migration away from rural areas
into cities.
This is the opposite of what you would
expect if too many people were a
bad thing.
Even at the level of countries,
there is no correlation between
population density and poverty.
Now, you might think that India and
Bangladesh are so poor because of
our population.
Well, consider this: Bahrain and Bermuda
have a greater population density than ours,
and are much richer.
In fact, even Monaco- which is so much
wealthier than us- has 40 times the
population density of Bangladesh.
The economist Julian Simon once said
people are "the ultimate resource."
There isn't one person on this planet
who can't make the lives of his fellow
humans better off in some way or the other.
And that's why the more of us there are
in a particular place,
the larger the economic networks,
and the greater the benefits of
specialization and division of labour.
That is why cities are such a
magnet for people:
they are teeming with opportunity.
And population is not a problem,
but a blessing.

The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton 'is a style inspiration for Prince Harry's girlfriend Meghan - Duration: 2:12.
'Suits' actress Meghan Markle is increasingly following the Duchess of Cambridge's taste
in clothes, an expert has claimed.
The 'Suits' actress has been dating Prince Harry since mid 2016, and the evolution of
her wardrobe has led to suggestions she has been inspired by the Duchess.
Naomi Isted, a celebrity style expert, told Express.co.uk: "Meghan's style has always
been quite feminine slightly sexy, yet we have been seeing a much more polished and
tailored version of late.
"Meghan's recent looks are sleeker just as we saw Kate's style evolve into much more
tailored and chic looks, Meghan seems to be following suit."
Naomi explained that it's easy for Meghan to copy the Duchess because they have certain
physical similarities.
She said: "They have very similar body types and naturally as the relationship grows so
will her wardrobe into a very defined look just as Kate's has become super sleek, tailored
and every inch the modern-day princess."
Earlier this week, meanwhile, it was reported that Prince Harry is set to move in with Meghan.
The flame-haired royal is apparently keen to settle down with Meghan and has, therefore,
made plans to live with his girlfriend next door to his brother Prince William.
Prince Harry has also been taking a keen interest in the renovation work going on at their new
apartment at Kensington Palace.
A source said: "He keeps popping round and asking when it will be ready.
He seems in a real hurry to move in with Meghan."
The couple's supposed new apartment is close to where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
will call home from September.
The source added: "It's sweet that Harry and Meghan will be living next to William and
Kate."
