While our new Attorney General Jeff Sessions is busy out there spouting these old, tired,
worn out and completely false talking points about we need to crack down on marijuana and
how it's just as bad as heroine, attorneys across the country in the United States are
actually working to get this man kicked out of office.
More than 2,000 attorneys in the United States have signed on to a petition to get Jeff Sessions
formally disbarred from the Alabama Bar Association, effectively preventing him from being able
to practice law and most likely getting him completely kicked out of office.
Now this isn't just because they hate Jeff Sessions.
It's because of his history of corruption and lying to both people in the legal community
and the American public.
Specifically, they're talking about the fact that he lied under oath about the fact that
he allegedly never met with any Russians ever.
Now remember, Sessions offered up that information voluntarily.
He was not asked, "Did you meet with Russians?"
He brought that up when questioned by Al Franken.
He said, "I never had any contact with them."
The questions that Franken asked were simply, "Would you recuse yourself?", which he has
now done, but lying under oath is typically a major crime in the United States.
If you recall, that's actually what caused former President Bill Clinton to be impeached.
Lying under oath can get you sent to prison.
Lying under oath can ruin your career and will get lawyers disbarred, and has in the
past.
That's what these attorneys are working on right now.
Jeff Sessions lied under oath.
There is no question about that, except maybe amongst hardcore Trump supporters, but the
rest of us in reality understand that this is what he did.
We can compare his statements to the information that has come out since then and Sessions'
own admission since then, and determine yeah, he lied.
That should get him disbarred.
It should get him removed from office completely regardless of the disbarment, but since apparently
that's not going to happen because as Rand Paul said, Republicans don't investigate Republicans,
these attorneys have taken it upon themselves to do the work that Republicans in Congress
are too cowardly to do, too boneheaded and naïve, they think that all the horrible things
happening with inside the Trump administration, those aren't going to affect your average
everyday Republican congressman in the next election, but it will.
Talking points like Jeff Sessions lying under oath and Republicans doing nothing about it
are going to stay talking points until after the 2018 midterm, possibly even into the 2020
election, and that's what has to happen.
People in this country need to remember that we know Jeff Sessions committed perjury.
He committed a crime and the Republicans in Congress just sat there and let him get away
with it.

Can you imagine a pre-dawn raid on the homes of every senior figure in the Guardian? The editor-in-chief being arrested, the CEO, four columnists, three solicitors, a reporter and a cartoonist?. That is precisely what happened to my newspaper last October.
I was the editor-in-chief of Turkey's oldest newspaper, Cumhuriyet, until August – a post I decided to resign after the 15 July coup attempt.
Murat Sabuncu, the new editor-in-chief, and 10 other colleagues have now been in detention for more than 100 days – in solitary confinement, with no idea what charges they are facing.
Using the coup attempt to reinforce his power, the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has since been ruling the country under what is in effect martial law without the army.
It was this crackdown on justice and concern for my own safety that tore me from my family. In September I decided I would be safer in Germany.
Shortly after, the police impounded my wife's passport with no grounds whatsoever. She is being kept hostage by the state. Before the coup attempt there were 30 journalists in prison. Now it's 150.
The press in Turkey is under the cosh. The mainstream media have been silenced through political and economic oppression. The majority of opposition channels have been closed down. The last bastions are being strangled by censorship.
The joint leaders and 10 MPs from the second largest opposition party in parliament are in prison. Tens of thousands of civil servants have been dismissed.
Four thousand academics, including signatories to a petition for peace, have been sacked. It is under these conditions that Turkey proceeds towards the most important referendum in its history.
Assured that he now has sufficient strength to change the parliamentary democracy, Erdoğan has drawn up an amended constitution that will grant him sole control.
Should this amendment be approved on 15 April, Erdoğan will assume all parliamentary powers, including the ability to suspend parliament. He will rule over the council that appoints prosecutors and judges, which means total control over the judiciary. Advertisement.

They may be intimidated, they may be quiet, but those people who stood against Erdoğan are still there, and we need to give them our support.
It is support they won't get from international leaders such as Donald Trump, who gushed about what a good friend and ally Ankara has been to Washington.
The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has provided a supportive shoulder to Erdoğan, despite a few diplomatic hiccups along the way. And the British prime minister, Theresa May, visited recently to punt fighter jets worth £100m.
Anyone expecting a PM from the cradle of parliamentary democracy to criticise Erdoğan – who is sailing ever closer towards a dictatorship – was deeply disappointed by her silence.
A yes result in this referendum would be a victory for them: the populists, the weapons marketeers, the hostage takers.
But a no vote could be just the thing to bring us back from the edge, liberating our country and our colleagues.
This is why I am not pessimistic about my country's future and will continue to fight to get it back. After all, my past, my future, my wife and my paper are all still there.

I became an advocate for street vendors about 10 years ago.
In a city like LA, with all its diversity, food is a way that we share and celebrate
each other's culture.
people that don't speak Spanish are ordering their tacos de lengua.
They probably don't even know what lengua is right, they're eating cow tongue!
But they're out there ordering their al pastor, and their carne asada…
Food brings people together, it's really powerful and I think that's why street vendors
should have the legal right to sell, and not be criminalized for their entrepreneurship.
Street vendors were very vulnerable, they're out on the sidewalk, and they would get harassed
by law enforcement.
The public health department would come and shut them down.
And sometimes street vendors would be put into deportation proceedings,
just for street vending.
We knew we had to protect street vendors and their livelihood.
And we prevailed.
An economic recovery hasn't hit a lot of LA neighborhoods, and for me, street vending,
was a bottom up approach to an economic recovery, and that's why it really mattered.
Supporting entrepreneurs to be independent, earn their living with dignity, and that
was something that we needed to support.
What I've learned taking on really difficult projects in the economic development and housing
arena are all really valuable skills to take to DC, where you don't have instant results.
It's going to take time, and commitment, and relentlessness and those are all things
that I have honed over 25 years of advocacy, building, fighting, and leading for my community.
