Heavy goods vehicles belch out CO2, but they're not the only ones.
All internal combustion-engine vehicles
emit the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
However, CO2 emission regulations for new cars
and light commercial vehicles have been in force since 2012.
But not for heavy goods vehicles.
Because the number of larger, more powerful trucks
on Swiss roads is growing,
the CO2 emissions from HGVs have actually increased
by around 10% since 1990.
Quite unlike emissions of fine particles and nitrogen,
which have fallen dramatically - thanks to stricter limits,
new engine technologies and particle filters.
It would also be possible to reduce CO2, says Christian Bach,
who is researching low-CO2 drive
concepts at the Federal Laboratories for Materials Science
and Technology Empa.
There are already low-emission technologies
for heavy goods vehicles,
but low demand means they are still too expensive.
Empa supports the call for CO2 regulations,
but it's urging the government to do more:
Incentive systems need to be created,
so that HGV drivers switch from fossil diesel
to renewable energy sources.
In long-distance haulage in particular,
and notably in transalpine freight, this isn't so easy.
So we need specific programmes
geared towards these applications.
In the ongoing revision of the CO2 law
limits for HGVs have not yet been addressed.
Unlike in the European Union:
The EU Parliament recently voted in favour
of introducing CO2 reduction rules for HGVs too.
