You're Watching Animal Facts!

Italian Greyhounds and Whippets aren't just similar breeds, they're family!

So, there's a good reason why they are frequently confused.

There are some similarities between the two, which can be attributed to their shared sighthound

status as well as their shared origins.

But, we shouldn't mistake them, as they are quite distinctive breeds.

Let's compare the Whippet and the Italian Greyhound in our on-going series, Dog vs.

Dog.

Let's get started, but before we start, make sure to hit that subscribe button and

History

The older of the two breeds is the Italian Greyhound, which despite its name does not

descend from the modern Greyhound.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Italian Greyhounds were bred as noble companions some

2 or 3 thousand years ago in the region that is now Greece and Turkey when the mighty Roman

Empire ruled in the Mediterranean, where archaeological digs have turned up small Greyhound skeletons.

The breed's original purpose has been lost to history, but the Italian Greyhound likely

served as a hunter of small game in addition to duties as a companion.

By the Middle Ages, the breed had made its way to southern Europe and was very popular

among the aristocracy, especially in Italy — hence where it got its name.

In the 17th century, the Iggy, as it is sometimes called, arrived in England, where, as in Italy,

it found many fans among the nobility.

Royal owners throughout the centuries include Mary, Queen of Scots, Princess Anne of Denmark,

Charles I, Frederick the Great of Prussia, and Queen Victoria, during whose reign the

breed's popularity peaked.

Unlike the Italian Greyhound, the Whippet is a fairly modern breed, not much more than

a couple of hundred years old.

The breed was developed in Northern England, specifically Lancashire and Yorkshire, most

likely during the late 18th century, by crossing Greyhounds with fast, long-legged terriers.

The result was a small, swift dog frequently used by hunters to hunt rabbits and other

small game.

The Whippet became popular with working men in Northern England, who spent their free

time seeing whose Whippets could kill the most rabbits or rats or which was the fastest.

Whippet races usually took place on a straight track that spread down roads and across fields.

The Whippets would chase a piece of cloth or rag, and the contests became known as rag

races.

Size

Italian Greyhounds are the smaller of the two, in fact, it is the smallest of the sighthounds,

standing 13 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder.

Their weight ranges from 6 to 10 pounds, with some as large as 14 or 15 pounds.

A Whippet can range between 18 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder.

Their weight ranges from 18 to 48 pounds, with females being smaller, averaging 29 pounds.

Coats and Colors

When it comes to appearance, size is not the only difference in these two breeds.

An Iggy's short coat looks glossy like satin and feels soft to the touch.

You'll find it in all shades of fawn, cream, red, blue, or black, either solid or with

white markings.

The Whippet's short, smooth coat lies close to the body.

It can be any color or color combination known to dogdom.

You'll see Whippets in black, white, red, fawn, blue, cream, brindle, with various combinations

of those colors and a wide variety of spots, blazes, and patches.

Both breeds are considered to have easy-care coats.

With either breed, all you really need to do is brush it when it gets dusty, and bathe

the dog when it's rolled in something smelly.

Be careful about cold weather.

Neither breed's short, single coat is well suited for cold weather climates.

Your pooch would rather be cuddled up under a blanket.

Personalities

Overall, either breed can be a loving family companion, even for novice owners.

Neither likes to be left alone for long periods of time.

The Italian Greyhound is sensitive, alert, smart, and playful.

They are affectionate with family, and love to snuggle with you and stick close to your

side all day.

Strangers may see a more shy, reserved side of this personality.

Amiable, friendly, loves to snuggle, quiet, and gentle at home, the Whippet is alert and

makes an excellent watchdog.

Guard dog?

Not so much.

Your Whippet happily greets any stranger.

The Whippet is very child-friendly.

The Italian Greyhound does okay around kids but is not as tolerant as the Whippet.

Both breeds are ok with other dogs and usually cats, but smaller pets such as bunnies are

a no-go, as they have a high chase drive.

The Italian Greyhound has an above-average tendency to bark, while the Whippet has a

low tendency to bark.

Trainability

Both the Italian Greyhound and the Whippet are good for new owners.

In intelligence, the Italian Greyhound has a slight advantage over the Whippet and tends

to be more focused and patient with training.

Although they're fairly clever, Italian Greyhounds have short attention span and a "what's in

it for me?"

attitude toward training.

But, neither breed is particularly independent or dominant, and with patient training can

learn all the commands you wish to impart upon them with rewards of food and praise.

This breed can be extremely difficult to housetrain.

Your Italian Greyhound may never be totally trustworthy in the house.

A doggy door can help, but having the dog live outdoors is not an option you should

ever consider.

Activity Levels

The Whippet is the fastest domesticated animal of his weight, capable of speeds up to 35

mph, easily outpacing the Italian Greyhound's top speed of about 25mph, which is still pretty

quick.

Both dogs are considered medium energy levels and require a fair amount of exercise.

Both need daily exercise and will enjoy romping and running in a fenced yard or on a leash.

Health and Lifespan

Both the Italian Greyhound and Whippet have an average lifespan of between 12-15 years.

Both breeds can have ailments, as with any breed, but overall, you can expect fewer vet

bills with a Whippet than with an Iggy.

Common ailments affecting the Whippet are eye disease and a blood disease that keeps

the blood from clotting normally called von Willebrand's Disease.

The Italian Greyhound has a whole list of common ailments, including eye diseases such

as Cataracts, Vitreous Degeneration, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy, von Willebrand's Disease,

Hypothyroidism, Allergies, Hip Dysplasia, Epilepsy, and Portosystemic Shunt, an abnormal

blood flow between the liver and the body.

Many of these health concerns can be minimized by selecting a good breeder if adopting a

puppy.

We encourage thorough research before acquiring a puppy of any breed.

Both dogs have drug sensitivity.

Sighthounds, including Whippets and Iggies, are sensitive to anesthesia and some other

drugs.

A normal dose for any other dog of similar size can be fatal, probably because of the

low percentage of body fat.

Choose a veterinarian who is aware of this sensitivity in sighthounds and will know how

to dose pooch.

Junior is a really hard-working guy.

He's like a coach on the field.

If you need help, or if you're lost, or anything,

Junior's the person you can go to.

He may look like he's getting tired,

but he doesn't get tired. Junior doesn't get tired.

If you watch him, he's just an absolutely amazing player.

He has the best footwork I've seen in a while.

Rugby sevens, for the US, is growing in popularity.

I believe, as time goes on, that popularity will grow

and the sport will be big within the US,

and hopefully one day become as important

as the top three sports in the US.

Folau Niua is probably one person I really look up to.

He's taught me a lot at the recent camps

I've been to here, at Chula Vista,

and he's really been like a role model to me,

showing me the ins and outs of the system,

the type of system we play here at USA Rugby.

Well, to me it's a blessing for someone to say that.

I'm just a guy who loves playing the game, rugby.

It's been an honour and a blessing

for somebody to say that to me.

He's the future, right here, we're looking at.

My man right here.

You know, Folau is a senior player

he's been around the circuit for a very long time now.

And he's really a talisman for our team.

When he plays well, when his restarts are on point,

the team plays well. He's our playmaker.

We see Junior and that next step for him

will be to emulate Folau and to emulate the great play makers

in the circuit, as well.

I started playing controlled rugby

at the age of 11...

..but rugby has always been a part of my life

since I can remember.

My father was a rugby coach.

He's always coached me throughout my life,

starting in elementary school, pre-school days,

until I graduated high school.

I found out rugby was my passion

when I started to become more serious.

I would say middle school into high school.

That's when I decided, when I found out

I was actually pretty good at the game,

and so I wanted to make it more than a hobby for me.

I would say my strength

is the ability to make plays on the field.

I would keep my defender and I'd throw the ball,

to open up space to someone outside

and help my team win.

He's our captain. We all voted and think he should be captain,

because we all think he has what it takes,

and this has been...about his fourth camp here.

And he just has that knowledge and that rugby IQ,

that skill level that we need to follow, as a leader.

He leads by example - he doesn't say much,

but when he does speak, the boys do listen,

and they see him as a talisman for the team.

His ability to mix up the speed of the game,

to manipulate defenders

I think he's got a good stop-and-go, good acceleration.

He's able to manipulate defenders,

attack spaces that bring the defenders towards him

and then move the ball to another space.

Go, Junior! Go! Go!

Junior understands the importance of tempo.

The ability to push the game a little bit quicker,

and it's something I'm really proud of in Junior

and something I know

our national sevens programme see in him, as well.

I just tend to look for weaknesses

in my opponents' game plan.

Such as which defender can't tackle as good

and where there's open spaces in the back or...

..where I can attack to... give my team the advantage.

Whenever I win a match, I'm always...

I'd say I'm quite humble about it, because...

yeah, you won a match,

but you'll always have another match after that,

and even if it's a championship game,

you would always focused on the next season.

When I lose matches, it's quite defeating.

You would just have to take it for what it is.

Not blame anybody and point any fingers

at any of your team-mates,

but just go back to the drawing board

and find out what you did wrong.

And correct it for the next day, the next match.

The Olympics is where the best of the best

in the world compete.

To be invited to play in the Olympics

would be just a great honour to any athlete, truly,

because that's saying that they're chosen

to represent their country,

and they're seen as one of the best in their country -

and potentially the world.

My biggest dream for the sport of rugby sevens

is to become an Olympic athlete.

That is pretty much any athlete's dream.

To walk and represent their country in the Olympics.

I just wanna make it to the Olympics team.

Hopefully, get my country a medal.

This is how to make Korean style Kimchi - Duration: 18:29.

Today, I will make Kimchi. Please follow me.

I prepared 5 kg of Chinese cabbages

And green onion, chives, apple, white radish, carrot, onion, ginger, garlic, rice flour, chilli powder.

I bought this Korean chilli powder at Lottemart

And a lot of salt, sugar, fish sauce.

This is it for preparing ingredients to make Kimchi. It's so simple.

Firstly, cut Chinese cabbage into 4 pieces

And put salts on every page of the cabbages you cut.

Upside, downside, outside, inside... everywhere.

Wait 3 hours after you finished putting salts into the cabbages.

Secondly, prepare sauce for Kimchi.

Cut green onion and chives

And slice carrot and white radish.

After that, put onion, apple, garlic, ginger into a mixer and make a juice of them

Put 2 spoons of rice flour into a pot and some water

And boil it until it becomes sticky. Please stir it until it finishes

After it becomes sticky, put 2 spoon sugar into it.

Wait it to be cooled.

Put all the ingredients you prepared into a bowl

And put 2 spoons of fish sauce and 15 spoons of chilli powder and mix it.

Put more chilli poweder if you like spicy

And stir the bowl until all the ingredients are mixed. Until you can't see chilli powder grain.

After 3 hours of wait, please wash cabbages off salts.

Now, cover cabbage with chill sauce everywhere on the cabbage with your hands. 100%!

And put the Kimchi you made into a proper box

Leave the boxes outside for 48 hours. You can put the Kimchi inside the fridge after that

So I'm looking for some speed upgrade that makes guitar

Or range up for ages so I can stay a little bit further away. I think those will be beneficial in the long run

And she does start with an item called the young heart which you can see just up in the top there

Basically, it restores one hearts worth of health

When I needed so it's a rechargeable item it'll charge add like philmont's and as I clear birth

And finding some easy rooms right off the bat with her

Now for my goals maybe not this episode but soon it's to unlock pain and to do that

I have to collect fifty five coins in a single run

now I did a little bit of research and I believe for the best way to do that is to actually just
