- The Lord be with you. - And with your spirit.
- A proclamation of the Holy Gospel, the good news,
according to Mark.
- [Congregation] Glory to you, O Lord.
- When the pharisees with some scribes had come
from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of His disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is unwashed hands.
For the pharisees, in fact all of Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And then coming from the marketplace,
they do not eat without purifying themselves
and there are many other things
that they have traditionally observed.
The purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.
So the pharisees and scribes question Jesus,
why do your disciples not follow the tradition
of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?
He responded, well, did Isaiah prophecy about
you hypocrites as it is written,
these people honors me with their lips
but their hearts are far from Me.
In vain do they worship Me teaching His doctrines,
human precepts.
You disregard God's commandment
but cling to human tradition.
Jesus summoned the crowd again and said to them,
hear me all of You and understand,
nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person,
but the things that come from within are what defile.
From within, from their hearts come evil thoughts,
unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed,
malice, deceit, licentiousness,
envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly;
all these come from within and they defile.
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- This is a very interesting conversation
and situation between Jesus and the pharisees.
Of course, many of the pharisees love to criticize Jesus.
They love to find fault with Him.
And I'm not sure why this particular meal Jesus' disciple
did not wash their hands.
I think all of us were told from childhood
we're supposed to wash our hands before we eat
is a matter of cleanliness.
But maybe they were in a hurry or maybe there wasn't
water around.
So immediately the pharisees jumped on them
and more importantly, more meanfully, if you will,
they jumped on Jesus and they said,
why are you breaking these laws.
Jesus knew when they were setting a trap for Him,
they knew that they were tryin' to find fault with Him.
So He says, well, all these human laws,
they're just that, they're human laws.
What about God's laws?
And Jesus could have quoted any of the Ten Commandments
and found out how often these pharisees were breaking them.
But they made the human laws more important.
And then He gave a great distinction.
We know the Jewish people then and Jewish people today
have what they call closure food laws.
Laws that regulate what is clean and unclean.
We know of course they're not supposed to eat pork.
They're not supposed to eat food
that isn't cautially prepared and so on.
And all that's good.
They have their tradition as we have ours,
not eating meet on the Fridays of Lent and so on.
But Jesus said, really what goes inside your mouth,
does that make you a bad person?
Isn't more where it comes outside your mouth?
And he gives that whole list of lies and deceit
and calumny and gossiping and character assassination,
talking about people.
I think we need to examine our own lives.
We are not gonna be judged on our diet.
We're not gonna be judged on our weight.
We're not gonna be judged on our health status,
but we are gonna be judged on our words and actions
exactly as James said in the second reading.
Be doers of the words, not hearers only.
It's not enough to say I was baptized, I'm Catholic,
I go to the mass often.
How do we live it out day in and day out?
Be doers of the word.
May your words and actions be Christ-like.
Now, let us profess what we believe.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord
who is conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen.

of every human heart, let us pray.
