Cancer is known as the global health problem that has a high morbidity and mortality which

poses both of economic and psychological challenges.

The cure and prevention for cancer still remains as the highest priority for the scientific

community all over the world.

Luckily, several numbers of studies have shown that eating fruits and vegetables is a great

help to prevent cancer and that is because of the content that they both have which is

called proanthocyanidins.

A team of scientists which came from United States and China have found out that the grape-seed

extract kills the laboratory leukaemia cells which make them commit suicide.

And it also shows a potential value of natural compounds in the treatment of cancer.

This study was led by Dr. Xianglin Shi which is a professor in the Graduate Center for

Toxicology at the University of Kentucky.

He and his colleagues have been published online in the issue of Clinical Cancer Research,

a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research last January 1, 2009.

Dr. Shi and his colleagues used a mass-market available grape-seed extract and exposed leukaemia

cells to different kinds of concentrations of the extract for about 12 and 24 hours.

They also observe the changes when leukaemia cells have been exposed to 50µg/ml of the

extract for about different time intervals.

The outcome had shown that the exposure to grape seed extract resulted in dose and time-dependent

gain in cancer cells apoptosis.

Also, they have discovered that the extract did not actually affect the normal cells but

they were not able to know the reason behind it.

The studies on grape seed extract have shown the affect in which it reduces breast tumors

in rats and skin tumors in mice and it also said to be active in various number of laboratory

human cancer cells lines such as skin, breast, colon, lung, stomach and even prostate cancer

cells.

But as of today, nobody has ever investigated the effect that it has on blood cancers.

Nobody had ever put a bigger attention about the capabilities that these seeds have in

order to treat cancer due to the fact that pharmaceutical companies will were not able

to make money out of it.

As time goes by, the traditional medicine that we have now becomes better and more effective

than before.

Therefore, it will lessen the death rate which caused by cancer.
