Hibernate Tip - How to use a timestamp for versioning and optimistic locking - Duration: 4:45.

Hi,

I'm Thorben Janssen from thoughts-on-java.org with a new Hibernate Tip.

When you had to map a legacy table model in one of your projects,

you probably know this situation.

Instead of a numeric version column,

the table model uses the timestamp of the last update.

I don't recommend using this approach

because numeric versioning is much more efficient.

But if you have to, you can also use a timestamp for versioning

with JPA and Hibernate.

The JPA specification supports numeric and timestamp columns for versioning.

You can use the timestamp column in the same way as a numeric version column.

You just need an entity attribute of type java.util.Date

and annotate it with Version annotation.

Let's take a quick look at an example before we talk

about the problems that this approach might introduce.

Here you can see a simple Author entity with a version attribute of type java.util.Date.

The attribute is annotated with Version

so that Hibernate knows that it has to update

its value with the current JVM timestamp

for each insert and update operation.

Let's run a quick test and take a look at the generated SQL statements.

Here you can see the INSERT statement.

Hibernate sets the value of the version column

to the current timestamp.

That was easy and it might seem like the timestamp

would be a good alternative to the numeric version column.

But please be aware that it has a few drawbacks.

The JVM usually doesn't provide the timestamp with millisecond accuracy.

And Hibernate can't detect 2 concurrent updates

that are executed at the same millisecond.

And If you scale your application horizontally,

you need to keep the timestamp of all instances in sync.

You can avoid 2 of the 3 drawbacks by retrieving the version timestamp from your database.

That is a Hibernate-specific feature that is not supported by all Hibernate Dialects

and requires an additional database query.

So, you shouldn't use it,

if you need to optimize your application for performance.

If you want to use this feature, you need to annotate your version attribute

with an additional Type annotation

and set its type attribute to dbtimestamp.

Here you can see the same Author entity as in the previous example.

I just added the Type annotation to tell Hibernate

to retrieve the timestamp from the database.

Let's see what happens when I now persist a new Author entity.

Hibernate performed an additional query to

retrieve the current time from the database

before it wrote the new record to the Author table.

That's obviously slower than the numeric versioning and

JPA's timestamp-based versioning approach.

But you don't need to keep the time of all application instances in sync

and you're not struggling with the insufficient timestamp accuracy of your JVM.

OK, that's it for today.

you should join the free Thoughts on Java Library.

It gives you free access to a lot of member-only content like

an ebook about the Java 8 support in Hibernate,

a printable PDF version of this Hibernate Tip,

lots of cheat sheets and a video course.

I'll add the link to it to the video description below.

WAYS TO CUSTOMIZE ILLUSTRATOR FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN | Satori Graphics - Duration: 5:41.

today I'm going to show you four ways to customize illustrator for graphic design

and how to pimp your software move to the time stamp in the corner if you wish

to skip the intro

what is up people welcome back to Satori graphics the home of graphic design

content right here on YouTube I'm thinking about starting a weekly series

why take designs from you guys I either critique them or give you advice on

these designs it could be a logo design it could be artwork it could be anything

at all if you think this is a good idea let me know in the comment section below

and if you want to send me your designs tag me on Twitter I'll check these

designs whenever I can now ways to customize illustrator for graphic design

the first way to customize illustrator is to change your workspace settings if

you go up to window in their workspace you'll find some presets right there so

for example I might be working on a typography design in Illustrator when I

clear the typography workspace settings he only shows tool panels that might be

relevant to typography design have a browser of the precess but I'm

gonna show you how to customize these personally for your grapple as I

workflow let's say I'm working on a logo design I would want the type window open

and maybe the Pathfinder window too if I want everything as it is now an

illustrator setup this way for every single local design project in

the future I can go up to window workspace and new workspace then type in

a relevant name and you have saved a new preset for your graphical design

projects

as you can see it's been saved here and if you want to delete the preset go up

to window workspace and manage workspaces

smart guides really help when you're using the pen tool for drawing out

intricate designs in Illustrator I will show you how to customize and activate

them but first you can see these pink or magenta lines showing up when I use the

pen tool and perfectly aligned the different point on my design if you come

over to illustrator preferences and they're smart guides this window will

appear here you can customize the color of your guides as well as what you want

the guides to connect to or nearly straight to designs if you want the guys

to operate at specific angles you can adjust I here and finally the tolerance

would dictate how sensitive the guides are

this way to customize illustrator for graphic design can be both handy and

annoying depending on what you're doing when I draw with the pen tool you may

notice a very small hex icon appear at the rate tip of the pen

and if I move my cursor will freeze in that place as if stuck by glue for a

specific moment this is because I have the snap to point

option activated which you can find here

this will again help with accuracy when drawing vector paths in Illustrator but

if you wanting to go totally freehand with the pen tool it can be annoying the

maximum tolerance you can use is eight for this setting

another way to customize illustrator for graphic design is one that has really

helped me in the past if you find that being on the computer all day long

working your graphic design can be strenuous on your eyes you can head over

to the user interface settings in the illustrator preferences and you can

customize the background color of Adobe Illustrator I prefer keeping your set to

a darker tone it's a lot easier on the eyes some might call this a night mode

setting to finish up in today's tutorial on ways to customize illustrator for

graphic design I have a bonus tip for you guys firstly if you want to remove

all panels from your screen for a brief moment simply press tab on your keyboard

this allows you to view your designs clearly secondly if you have many

windows and panels open you can merge them into one long line neatly at the

side

so did you find today's tutorial on ways to customize illustrator useful let me

know in the comment section below and subscribe to tutorial graphics for for

weekly crappy design uploads until next time diss on your future

today peace
