Self Portrait Tutorial. How I shot my profile photo for social media and my photography website. - Duration: 8:31.

I got new glasses.

These have been replaced by these.

I like these, but now I have to shoot a new profile picture.

So I figured I would take you along on the journey.

Stay tuned.

WAIT a minute!!!

We can't set up for this shot until we have a clear understanding of the task at hand.

Me!

A new portrait for my marketing materials that reflects my current look.

My photo appears on my website, my social media profiles, its in my media kit, my promotional

materials, its on my wife desk at work and the list goes on.

I have new glasses.

That means I need a new profile photo.

Immediately - I just got the new glasses and my YouTube channel is about to hit 100,000

subscribers and I have a ton of speaking engagements coming up so there is no reason to procrastinate.

This will be a studio shot.

My body double isn't available to do the sexy outdoor natural light session that I

would really like to do - so we'll keep it simple.

With a camera of course!

Oh you mean how did I go about doing my own self portrait?

Ok - I'll get to that in a minute - but first - let's fill in some more of the prep

stuff…

So here is the profile pic that I have been using for the last few years.

I like it.

It is the best version of me - on a good day - times about 10 = perfect portrait.

But since I have the new glasses, I need to update it.

Like most of you - I don't enjoy being in front of a still camera for a portrait.

I know its crazy - doing these videos doesn't bother me at all - but sitting in front of

a still camera is just painful.

Because my portrait is a huge part of my marketing and branding - I don't change it very often

because I want people to be able to recognize me and my content easily.

So my portrait is indeed a part of my branding.

In this case, my goal is to basically re-create the current portrait but with the new glasses.

Since I still have it and it's in good shape - I'll even wear the same shirt.

Since the photo will be heavily used on social media - I am going to make sure that I am

facing from left to right since most social media websites have the profile photo on the

left or in the middle.

I am going to shoot it on a solid white background so that it plays well with the design of most

of the social media sites and also my website.

The clean white background will also make it really easy to composite in a different

color background if needed.

I am going to compose the shot so that I can crop it as bust up portrait with both shoulders

and arms included but then also be able to crop closer which is very important for the

social media websites.

Since I will be shooting with a Nikon D810 and it's 36.3 megapixel sensor.

I will be able to do that without sacrificing quality.

Remember when people first see your profile photo on line - it is very small - so crop

tight and fill the frame for those social media profile pics.

———- Ok - back to the set-up….

I shoot tethered, so first I setup my brand new Digital ala cart case - I'll be doing

a video about the case in the near future.

The case holds my laptop, an external hard drive and has a TetherTool TetherBLOCK mount

to secure the tether cable to the case and computer.

This set-up lets me monitor the shots easily while I am shooting and insures that I can't

pull the cord out of the laptop accidentally.

Next up is a Paul C Buff Digibee DB800 placed on a stand behind me and aimed back towards

the camera.

Then I added a 5' Medium Photoflex Octodome which served as my backlit background - lit

by the DigiBee.

The front of the Octodome is right behind the stool.

As I assemble the gear on set - I am going to check from time to time that things are

in a workable spot so that I can see and operate them.

Since this is a self portrait - I am shooting with my Nikon D810 mounted on a tripod.

The camera angle for this shot is high - so the camera with a 50mm f/1.8 lens attached

is looking down on me.

Shooting a portrait with a full frame camera and a 50mm lens is not a traditional choice.

In this case - it is a very conscious decision.

The high camera angle with the short lens - give the image a slight caricature feel

and since my really big head is closer to the camera lens - it makes my body look smaller

in relationship - in other words… how to make the camera remove 10 pounds instead of

adding it.

Next I added my TetherTools cable.

Using a TetherBLOCK by TetherTools, I am able to get a solid and secure connection that

won't pull out of the D810 or cause damage to the data port.

I will be using Capture One Pro software on the laptop to manage the downloads and they

are immediately saved to an external thunderbolt hard drive on download.

Next up is a second Paul C Buff Digibee mounted high and slightly to camera right with a 30"

Photoflex Shoot through umbrella to create my key or main light.

Then to be able to trigger the camera I am using a Nikon MC-30A cabled trigger with an

extension cord.

I used the Paul C Buff Cyber Sync Trigger Transmitter to allow the camera to trigger

the DigiBees.

And with the set-up complete - a few minutes of test shots to get camera placement and

make adjustments to the height and location of the background OctoDome

Once I am feeling like I am in the zone with my camera position and lighting - I grabbed

a light stand and set-it up to create a focus point for my camera.

This is a way for me to fine tune camera position and composition.

As I mentioned - the plan was to shoot a little loose - but not a lot loose - I want to fill

the frame as much as possible.

I decided to shoot at f/9 so that I would have plenty of depth field with the shorter

50mm lens.

When I actually started shooting - I left the camera on auto focus because by that time

I was confident that I had the focus spot on my eyeglasses based on my pose and the

composition.

I was able to monitor that on the computer screen as the images were downloading.

So with everything set-up and the test shots done - my fun was over.

It was time to actually shoot some images.

It has been pointed out to me that I have an expression that I do for portraits - it

is an excited open mouth smile.

Yes - that is intentional.

I hate cheesy smiles and since my teaching and YouTube persona is very energetic - it

is much more appropriate than the brooding artist moody look - that does work for some

people.

Let me show you a little trick…. when I sat down on the stool - I pulled the back

of the shirt down and made it a point to sit on the tail of the shirt.

This makes the shirt fit better on the shoulders and shapes the collar properly.

Since I weight a few pounds more than I would like to at the moment - I also unbuttoned

the bottom few buttons and grabbed them and pulled down to prevent any gabbing or unusual

wrinkles in the front of the shirt.

All of that is happening out of frame - so it doesn't look awkward in the final shot.

And finally after just over 3,000 frames….

I was finished.

NO - I didn't really shoot 3,000 frames - I could have shot 10,000 and it wasn't

gonna make this face look like Brad Pitt.

I shot just over two hundred frames.

And the final result…… here is the old shot - here is the new shot straight out of

the camera.

SOOC.

Now, my online profile images - look like me again - with my new glasses.

After all of that - time for the really fun part of shooting a self portrait.

The clean-up.
