Doctor Foster writer reveals his original alternate ending for series 2 – and it's VERY different - Duration: 2:37.
Doctor Foster writer reveals his original alternate ending for series 2 – and it's VERY different
Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett has revealed there was originally another ending to the drama – and it pretty much changes everything.
To recap, last nights finale ended with the disappearance of Gemma and Simons son Tom, who had enough of his warring parents and decided to run away for good.
The episode divided viewers – many of whom thought Simon deserved a bigger comeuppance seeing as he was a pretty terrible parent anyway.
But in the original draft, the ending was even more peaceful for the Foster family – well, for Gemma and Tom at least. The ending of the show unfolded as I was writing it, Bartlett told Radio Times.
In the plan, hes [Tom] in the car at the end. They go back to her house and get a new kitchen and try to build a life.
It was only when I went to write it that she goes back to the car and hes not there. But that happened very organically from what he has been through, I think.
Toms not a little child any more, hes going to make his own choices.
And so hopefully its one of those ones which you dont see coming but when it happens you look over the whole series and realise this has been coming the whole time.
I was so involved in Gemma and Simons story thats all I was thinking about when writing it. It sounds mad, this. But she comes out of the hotel and hes not there.
Thats the moment you look for as a writer, when the characters start telling you what they are doing rather than you telling them.
So Gemma was never going to run Simon over and the alternative ending just means everyone ends up fine?. Darn.

Manchester United can end Liverpool's title dreams for another season, says John Aldridge - Duration: 2:20.
Manchester United can end Liverpool's title dreams for another season, says John Aldridge
Jurgen Klopp's side have endured a mixed start to the season, thrashing Arsenal 4-0 last month but only winning three of their seven matches.
Currently sitting seventh with 12 points, Liverpool are already seven adrift of the impressive joint-leaders Man City and United.
And Aldridge fears the 'game will be up for Liverpool' if they fall to defeat against Mourinho's United on October 14.
'I'm not Jose Mourinho's biggest fan for a variety of reasons,' ex-Liverpool star Aldridge told the Irish Independent.
'But he gets his teams winning if you give him time and with Romelu Lukaku scoring goals for fun and his defence looking like the best in the Premier League, United are ready to push for the title for the first time since Alex Ferguson's retirement as their manager.
'It may still be too early to write off teams like Chelsea and Tottenham, but if United were to win at Anfield and open up a ten-point lead over Klopp's side, the game would already be up for Liverpool.
'That would be very hard to take for a team that continues to make the same mistakes week-after-week, with Sunday's 1-1 draw at Newcastle the latest example of the frustrating story we watch every time they take to the field now.
'I think Chelsea will still be in the mix but you've got to say City and Manchester United have been impressive and are the teams to beat,' he told Sky Sports.
'I think we are seeing the managers, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho, imprinting their own visions on their teams.
'In Pep's case, with the goals they score and the chances they are creating, it's exciting for City fans right now.

England ace Aaron Cresswell pushing for competitive Three Lions debut - Duration: 1:56.
England ace Aaron Cresswell pushing for competitive Three Lions debut
Aaron Cresswell is aiming to make his competitive debut for England. The West Ham defender's only two caps for his country so far came in friendlies, against Spain last year and France in June.
But Cresswell is pushing left back rival Ryan Bertrand for a place in the team for the World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania.
The 27-year-old has helped the Hammers keep clean sheets in three of their last four Premier League matches. Cresswell said: "It would be nice to make my competitive debut in one of the two remaining qualifiers and that's the plan.
"But the main aim is to qualify and whoever plays, I'm sure we can do that. "We've got two winnable games and, as I say, hopefully we can do that and then look forward to the World Cup next year.
"We've only got to get one point more and we'll have got the job done." Creswell admits West Ham's 1-0 over Swansea on Saturday helped ease the pressure after his side's poor start to the season.
He said: "For us to get the three points was massive, especially going into a two-week break, to relieve that pressure on everyone for the foreseeable future.".

Doctor Foster writer says there's "potential" for series 3 after THAT jaw-dropping finale - Duration: 3:36.
Doctor Foster writer says there's "potential" for series 3 after THAT jaw-dropping finale
Dont give up hope for more Doctor Foster because writer Mike Bartlett has hinted that a third series is definitely possible.
The BBC One thriller came to a shocking end on Tuesday (October 3) with a finale that teased several potentially grim fates for Gemma (Suranne Jones) and Simon (Bertie Carvel), before hitting them where it hurts the most: the loss of their son Tom (Tom Taylor).
After weeks of seeing his parents involved in sexual entrapment, threats and betrayal, teenager Tom simply walked out on his parents to live his own life away from being a pawn in their sick revenge game.
Showrunner Mike Bartlett said earlier this week that hes under no pressure to make more of Doctor Foster, yet hes not ruling out the possibility either.
You can see the ending, Bartlett told the Radio Times. So theres a question mark. In a way that is a question mark at the end.
And I think it works as an end to this series and all the things that have been going on. Clearly theres potential there. But obviously there would have to be lots of conversations.
We need to talk – Suranne and I and lots of other people need to have lots of conversations and well see.
Bartlett also let slip that he originally planned a very different fate for Gemma and Simon while scripting the National TV Award-winning dramas second series swansong.
The ending of the show unfolded as I was writing it, he remembered. In the plan, hes in the car at the end. They go back to her house and get a new kitchen and try to build a life.
It was only when I went to write it that she goes back to the car and hes not there. But that happened very organically from what he has been through I think.
I was so involved in Gemma and Simons story, thats all I was thinking about when writing it. It sounds mad, this. But she comes out of the hotel and hes not there.
Thats the moment you look for as a writer, when the characters start telling you what they are doing rather than you telling them.
If Bartlett is itching for ideas on how to continue Doctor Foster, weve come up with a possible method for the BBC One show to carry on in a new and very different way. Read all about it by clicking here.

Genteel Lancing Device — The Best Device for Blood Glucose Testing - Duration: 5:10.
The biggest benefit
is that I literally do not have to prick my fingers anymore.
One of the cool things about being
diabetes and nutrition fitness coaches
is that Cyrus and I get to learn
about new innovative products
from our hundreds of clients all over the world.
And I will never forget the day
when Tim posted in our private Facebook group
about a new lancing device that claimed to be
a pain free way to test blood glucose.
So I started looking into it eventually I got one,
I was very excited to see
that I could buy it on Amazon, I ordered it,
I got it the next day,
and I started using this thing and I have never looked back,
I wish I had picked this up a long time ago.
If you're living with diabetes
then you know the frustration
of having to prick yourself all the time.
So anything that can make this process
less painful is quite exciting to me.
In a nutshell the My Genteel Device
pricks your skin gently
and then uses a suction cup technology
to pull the blood out.
It's actually some really cool technology.
Another cool thing is that
you don't have to buy new lancets,
most lancets that you already have will work with this device,
so that's pretty cool.
For those living with insulin-dependent diabetes,
like Cyrus and myself,
we're both living with Type 1 diabetes,
it's absolutely essential to test your blood glucose
very frequently throughout the day.
If you're using a CGM
you can test yourself much less frequently,
like me, I'm using a Dexcom so I can test less frequently,
but you still have to test
and again, anything that makes that process
less painful is really good.
For those living with non insulin-dependent diabetes,
let's be clear here, the goal is to eventually
not have to test your blood glucose at all.
That's the goal,
that's that we teach in our coaching program,
that's where we wanna get those people to.
But getting to that place is a process,
and testing your blood glucose is part of that journey.
We're always asking our clients to report data,
mostly for Type 2s that test once in the morning
and again, if you can make that a pain free experience,
why not go ahead and do it?
The biggest benefit
is that I literally do not have to prick my fingers anymore.
For 16 years, I only pricked my fingers
and now I get to use other locations--
you can use all kinds of locations with this device--
but for me, I like to use
this arm area and the top of my knee cap,
and it works perfectly well.
So I'm going to do an example.
I'm gonna put in a new lancet.
Alright so, I'm just going to put it right here,
like that, just put it on the skin,
and then I'm gonna hit this button
and I'm gonna hold it for
you technically are supposed to hold it for 10 seconds,
sometimes I don't do that whole length of time.
There we go, perfect drop.
Just like that, 96.
So I've been using this device since April,
over 5 months now
and I absolutely love it,
but let's be honest nothing is perfect,
there is a couple of drawbacks, let's go over those.
The first drawback is that it's a little bit larger
than most lancing devices.
So this is the old one that I used right here
and this is the new one.
And honestly it fits perfectly in my insulin kit right here,
so to me it's not a big deal
and it's totally worth it for the pain free testing
and because I can use so many other locations.
The other drawback that I can think of
is that when you get the device
there's a little bit of a learning curve
and you can see here there's different color contact tips
that you can put that at the tip here, and that's gonna
have an impact on the depth of the pricking.
So for different locations
you might need to play around
with different color tips,
and that can be frustrating cause you might prick yourself
and you don't get enough, and that's never fun.
But once you've figured it out
I'm telling you, it's totally worth it.
You can also read a little more about this device
on our website MasteringDiabetes.org
and you can check out their website,
which is full of more information, testimonials and videos.
It's just a cool device guys, check it out.
In summary,
I love this device and I highly suggest you try it.
They have a 120 day money-back guarantee.
If you give it a shot and you don't think
it's better than your current lancing device
and you don't think it's worth the expense
then you can just go ahead and return it,
but I'm quite confident
that you are going to like it and
you are gonna be grateful that you saw this video.
We would love to hear from you,
so in the comments below please write
what type of diabetes you're living with,
and how often you test your blood glucose per day.
I look forward to seeing what you guys write
in the comments section
and going back and forth there
and talking about this important topic,
and I'll see you guys in the next video.

I'm going to wash my hands. Hi Leanne, I'm Nicole. I'm going to be your nurse aide today.
Let me go ahead and provide you some privacy make sure that your bed is low and locked
give you your call light
And today we're going to go ahead and do some passive range of motion on your knee and ankle. Is that okay?
[Patient] Yes
so I don't need any supplies but I'm going to raise the bed
to a comfortable height
then I'm going to go ahead and expose your leg without overexposing.
and before we begin if you feel any pain at any time let me know and we'll stop. Okay?
[Patient] okay.
So I'm going to grab right at the bend of the knee and not at
the thigh or the calf and right underneath the Achilles tendon and not
at the calf or at the heel and we're going to do it three times.
