I'm Anjo Damiles.
I'm Chino Roque.
And we're about to embark on a meaningful adventure
with one personal mission.
We can do this. Let's go!
8 Stories.
8 Journeys.
#ThePLAN is to get
Scenezoned.
I've been an athlete since I was 10.
From football to dragon boat,
CrossFit and triathlon,
I always try to challenge myself.
And since I opened my own CrossFit gym,
I've always encouraged people to push their limits
and remain healthy and fit.
I'm always in front of the camera.
That's why I work hard to be in my best shape.
I do most of the work inside the gym,
but on really busy days, it could be a chore.
So, I'm thinking of exploring new ways
to mix up my fitness routine.
The island province of Guimaras
is primarily known as the exporter
of world-class mangoes,
our national fruit.
But, did you know that it is also the go-to place
for mountain bikers?
The tourist spots are so close to each other,
you can get around by bike.
The fifth smallest province is perfect for fitness freaks like us.
Guimaras it is!
For #ThePLAN is to go on a fitness adventure.
Guimaras has always been a popular side trip
for adventurous travelers
because it is near Iloilo city.
This is no side trip though.
We're really heading to the mango capital of the Philippines.
We'll catch the earliest flight to Iloilo,
and from the city proper,
there's a wharf where we can take a 15-minute boat ride
to the island province of Guimaras.
Morning!
So we just landed here in Iloilo,
and we are on our way to the land of mangoes.
Let's go!
No time to waste!
The moment we got there, we went straight to the Woodland Bike Park.
This is our first stop.
We're gonna ride our mountain bikes.
Mountain bikes over here.
These babies right here.
We're ready to roll!
We met Chris,
consultant of Guimaras Bike Paradise of the Philippines Project.
Guimaras has always been a secret spot for mountain bikers.
The topography of this island is just perfect.
to become the premiere biking destination
within the country.
It's all green,
the environment is still, very well intact here.
Bikers are very welcome in Guimaras.
The more we talk to Chris,
the more I had a deeper appreciation
of what they're trying to achieve here in Guimaras.
Through the development of bike tourism within the province
gives opportunities to local communities
to have other options for livelihood.
So it's not only about the fun aspect of biking,
it's also helping the local people here in Guimaras.
You get to bike and do something good at the same time.
We knew it was gonna be an adventure.
'Sup, guys! We're here at the Four Cross (4X) Track,
and it's me and Anjo on our mountain bikes now.
It's your very first trail, right?
It's my first trail ever.
Hope we don't tip over or maybe fall over.
Let's go!
Guimaras really takes pride in their most famous export product.
So Chris brought us to this mango farm
where we saw these rows of 57-year-old mango trees
that formed cool-looking canopies.
We're here at the famous mango farm in Guimaras.
We're gonna try the mangoes fresh.
It's so yummy!
That is really sweet, really good.
The mangoes of Guimaras are the sweetest.
It's in the Book of World Records.
The people here take so much pride in it
that they prohibit the entry of non-native mango fruits and seeds.
Guimaras is effortlessly charming.
But, we're in an island province,
and we wanted to see the ocean.
At the Sibunag port,
there's a long concrete trail leading out towards the pier
where we can have a view of the Guimaras Strait.
We're just in the middle of our fitness journey.
What better way to just go around Guimaras with our bikes.
This is exactly what we came here for.
To ensure sustainability,
they have pinpointed marine protected areas
in different parts of this wide stretch of water.
Guimaras Strait.
Look at that.
Let's go!
It was exhilarating to finally get off the main road,
go off the beaten track
to see something like this secret beach.
The restful vibe of the beach
made it perfect for some downtime.
Anjo and I are just taking a break here at Chris' secret spot.
Pero hindi na siya secret.
We heard that is the best spot to chill
for the mountain bikers here in Guimaras.
Water break.
Cheers!
And tables.
And then, it was time for another exercise-slash-tour.
What's up, guys?
So we are here at the Trappist Monastery right now.
Look at that view.
We're gonna go for a relaxing ride around these coconut trees.
Everything that we saw in that blessed farm
was grown, harvested, and handpicked for production
of yummy mango products
by the monks of the only male monastery in the country.
So if you think about it,
they really are doing sustainable farming here in Guimaras.
We came from a long day of biking.
What better way to spend it than with snacks?
They're actually freshly made here
in the Trappist Monastery.
Mango bars.
Mmm, sarap!
Everything in Guimaras just seemed to fit well together.
The way they manage their resources
and how it supports people's livelihood.
So we were completely blown away when we learned that in Guimaras,
there was also a wind farm.
Anjo and I are here again at our final stop of our fitness journey.
It was tiring, but it was worth it, isn't it?
It is.
We are here in the first wind farm of Visayas.
So beautiful.
For the entire province of Guimaras,
we need about four turbines to power the whole province.
Just four?
Yeah.
And how many do we have here?
Twenty-seven.
With renewable energy,
we do not burn any fuel.
In a way, we do our part
in minimizing the causes for climate change.
Guimaras is certified green.
In more ways than one,
it's pioneering in agri-eco tourism.
I never thought fitness,
pushing our limits
could actually be this enjoyable and thrilling.
You have to keep moving forward.
Constantly peddling hard on your workouts
and continuously doing more.
It's more fun to ride a bike
'cause your senses are heightened
and you feel more connected with the nature around you.
And once you're in tune with your environment,
you're more likely to protect and sustain it.
And that's something that's more apparent here in Guimaras
than any other place I've visited.
These two wheels can transform lives –
they can transform communities.
It allows us to get to places.
Experience more
and live a better, healthier life.
