Object Storage for Every CIO - Duration: 4:56.
My role within Western Digital is Cheif Information Officer, and within that role
I oversee all applications, systems, and data storage globally for the company.
Some of the biggest challenges that I'm dealing with right now for Western
Digital is the integration we're going through of three large companies, and taking
those three companies and bringing them into one business operation going
forward. What that means is rationalizing thousands of applications, and all the
underlying data that goes with those applications. A lot of the steps and
processes were going through right now are working with the business to really
understand what are their business processes? What are they trying to
accomplish, and then what is the data that's needed to support those business
operations? ActiveScale differentiates itself in its ability to provide a wide
variety use cases for our data storage needs, and so our single consolidated
storage architecture allows us dozens and dozens of use cases. These use cases
go across manufacturing support, these use cases go into security operations
and management, and they go into areas such as backup retention and storage.
So one of the big advantages was accessibility to data within the
manufacturing environment, where we're able to take the time that it takes for
somebody to find data, take that down from weeks where they were starting, down
to hours, and then sometimes taking it down to minutes to find that piece of
data that they need to solve those problems. Additionally, when we're taking
a look at yields, its allowing us to start getting incremental improvements
on yields, both on new products where we're looking at improving the ramp up
to yield, and on existing products where we're looking to take their current
yield and increase it. Another aspect is
security and how we use object storage to help our security management. We take
all of our sensor data through the company, bring it into ActiveScale, and
then on top of that we have Splunk providing analytics. What that does is
provide us a much more real-time environment for responding to and
identifying critical cybersecurity events. So say in the event of a
ransomware or security issue where you have to go and restore 10, 20, 50 servers
at a time; being able to restore that data from an object storage repository
is significantly faster than restoring 10, 20, 50 servers from a tape backup
library. Some of the savings were seeing in the operational costs are allowing us
to reduce cost by 50 percent in our public cloud storage costs by keeping
that in our own object storage environment. One of the other savings
that we get through object storage is around reduced operational costs. Those
operational cost reductions happen both on the manufacturing side and then also
on the IT side. One good example of that is inside of our Big Data Platform.
So our Big Data Platform takes data from all of our manufacturing sites, brings it
into our object storage platform, and from there into our Hadoop platform. The
ability for us to store large amounts of historical data on our object storage
platform, allows us to have a true hybrid environment with Amazon, in kind of a
public cloud - hybrid environment. I keep a significant amount of data, all the data
on premise in our object storage, but in the cloud I only keep 18 months to two
years. That's the most relevant. That allows me to significantly reduce my
public cloud storage costs. So with the massive
amount of data that's being generated in our connected world, Internet of Things,
machine learning, artificial intelligence. It's generating a massive amount of data
and object storage is the enabling platform for these applications, because
of that, right now is the time for every CIO to take a look at how object storage
fits into their enterprise.
