- It should be illegal for an 18 year old to sign
their life away; and that's what I did.
I'm over $120,000 in student loan debt.
- $95,000.
- $75,000.
- It's like a wheel of fortune number; it's a lot.
- $120,000 in debt.
- My student loans make me feel defeated.
- As if I'm at a pretty significant disadvantage.
- My student loans make me aware of our education system,
and how it can be improved for people who
need financial aid.
- Anxious, and trapped.
- [Interviewer] Can you draw a picture to show
how your student loans currently make you feel?
- I'm really bad at drawing, but I would absolutely...
Do you want me to draw it?
- Do you want me to do it on camera?
- You know, if there's no judgment.
If it's a safe space, I'm happy to draw for you guys.
Yeah.
- That would be fun actually.
A little cathartic.
- Sorry guys, this is gonna be painful for everyone.
(scribbles furiously)
- When I was younger I wanted to make cartoons.
You guys are helping me achieve my dreams right now.
- I regret taking out student loans.
If I have kids one day, they're not gonna be allowed
to take out student loans.
- Hell no.
My kids will never, and my brothers will never.
My whole family has learned this lesson.
My grandparents are involved.
- I think that colleges, and even high schools
should teach students about student loans, like
what to expect when it comes to a student loan payment.
- I do not regret my degree, but I do regret
not being smarter about the school choice I made,
and all of the options available to me.
- At 18 years old you're not thinking what you're
gonna be making at 22.
You just think, I'm gonna go to college,
I'm gonna get a degree, I'm gonna move to New York City...
- I was delusional when I was younger.
I was much delusional.
I thought I would just make a lot of money
right out of college, pay off whatever bills I had to pay,
and live my best life.
- This is like the saddest painting I've ever drawn.
So, go?
My student loans make me feel like a sad clown
because clowns are meant to be happy.
- So this is a picture of me with a bunch of dollar signs
in the air, thinking of my loans and me being
fuming and angry about it.
- This is unknown student loan company, we'll just call 'em
Mallie Sae, and they have a lot of money, and I have
a shirt that says broke.
- I'm crying, it's raining, it's awful.
This is a pretty sad scene.
- Climbing, you know, meandering my way through my career.
So we'll see if I can make it up there.
- That's what ended up on the page.
Just (groans)
- It's sad puppy.
And it's not gonna get adopted, and it's just gonna be
walking through life not living to its full potential.
I don't think I'm living to my full potential.
I'm getting emotional now.
It just sucks.
It sucks.
Can I swear?
(bleep) you!
(bleep) you! (laughs)
- Why do you do this to me all the time?
- I understand you, but I hate you.
- My hope is that we will be free of each other
as soon as possible.
- I'm so angry.
I can't do anything.
I can't believe I'm getting emotional.
It sucks.
I mean I'm always hopeful.
I'm sticking it out in New York, and doing what
I love to do, and I'll continue to do that.
- I think I've gotten to the point where I realize
that this is kind of my life, and feel a little
bit more resigned, which is just really sad.
But I guess that's just your early twenties, right?
Resignation.
- But I'm never gonna stop trying, I guess.
I can't believe I got emotional.
I'm so sorry.
(laughs)
