In order to increase students interest in Mathematics,
Srinivasa Ramanujan
created a Math trick.
He entered his birth date in the first row of a 4x4 matrix.
Then, he filled several numbers in the rows below.
In the end, if you add these numbers
horizontally
or vertically
you will get the same number, which is 139.
Also, if you add these numbers diagonally, you will get the same number.
Also,
If you add these numbers in blue squares
or if you add these numbers in the green squares,
it will give the same answer.
Also, if you add these 4 numbers at the centre
or if you add these 4 numbers in the corners,
you will get the same answer which is 139.
Now, let's learn how to create this magic square matrix for your birth date.
First step is to draw three 4x4 matrices in boxes like this with spaces for 16 entries each.
Then, enter your birth date in this format (DD/MM/YY/YY) in the first row of the first matrix.
In the next row,
write the same numbers but in reverse order.
In the third row,
take first two numbers from the first row and write them in reverse order like this.
Similarly, take the next two numbers from the first row and write them in reverse order like this.
Now, to fill the fourth row,
take first two numbers from the second row and write them in reverse order like this.
Similarly, take the next two numbers from the second row and write them in reverse order like this.
Now, lets move to the second matrix
This matrix will be the null matrix. Let's fill them with numbers.
In the first row,
fill all the entries with zeros.
In the second row,
fill them with +1, -1, -3 and +3.
In the third row,
fill them with -2, +2, +2 and -2.
In the fourth row,
fill them with +1, -1, +1 and -1.
In this null matrix, if you add these numbers
horizontally
or vertically
or diagonally
it should only give 0.
Now,
if you add these 2 finished matrices as per rules of matrix addition,
you will get the Ramanujan's magic square matrix.
