Securing Surface Transportation - Our Task is Clear - Duration: 1:42.

We are gonna start seeing more attacks or attempted attacks on

mass transit rail systems. It's too attractive a target

for terrorist, because it's an opportunity to inflict a lot of casualties

in spaces where people tend to gather in dense crowds

and its also an opportunity to inflict damage on critical infrastructure.

And if you look at the security posture that we have in place now, it's not sufficient.

Because we are not performing the sort of detailed screening that takes place

in the aviation environments. Mass transit security is a global problem.

We are no less vulnerable here than they are overseas.

This highlights the importance of developing

tools that can assist the security staff on site

to ensure that our systems stay as secure as possible.

Our task is clear, we need a way to safely

detect explosive threats on people and in their bags and we have to do this without physically searching them

or impacting their flow through the transit system.

This is why the Department of Homeland

Security, Science and Technology Directorate has a program to mitigate the explosive threat

to surface transportation. Here at S&T were developing

a number of tools, among them a video algorithm capable of automatically detecting bags left

behind and tagging individuals who left those bags.

We're also developing a suite of video forensic tools that allow video surveillance systems to work more effectively

and efficiently. We are also investing in stand-off

threat detection systems using complimentary parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

These systems will serve as a key component of the layered screening concept.

A Brain Implant is Restoring Movement to a Quadriplegic Man's Fingers - Duration: 7:23.

- There's a lot that goes through your head

when you're told that now you're not gonna

be able to do anything for yourself.

It was our first day on vacation,

I'm diving into a wave, I hit my head,

everything went numb.

Everything became extremely serious

when I first met with the doctors

that said you broke your spinal cord,

you're never gonna be able to walk again,

and this is how it's gonna be

for the rest of your life.

It really just felt like I had my whole life

ripped away from me,

but I'm not gonna let this define my life.

- Spinal cord injuries are pretty much permanent.

- But why accept these limits?

Maybe we can come up with an artificial interface.

- So we looked at this as an important problem

to reanimate the limb of a quadriplegic.

- 100 years ago the thought of someone

leaving the planet and going into space was crazy.

When I broke my neck,

the thought of me using a computer

to regain use of my body was crazy,

but now that's exactly what I'm doing.

My name's Ian Burkhart, I'm 26 years old

and I'm an accounting student.

Alexa, turn on the lights.

- Okay.

- Before my injury, I was very independent.

I had just finished my freshman year of college.

First time living on my own

and doing everything everyone else was doing.

But that all came to a change

on June 13th of 2010.

- I remember distinctly it was a Sunday evening,

and I got a phone call about 11 PM,

you know, he said your son had a diving accident

and he broke his spinal cord,

and we think he's gonna live, but he'll never walk again.

- The first time I saw him,

it really kind of sums up how he is,

because he looked at me and he said,

Mom, life isn't over, it's just different.

- Maybe I'll be in a wheelchair for the rest

of my life, but I'm not gonna be the guy in the wheelchair,

I'm gonna be Ian.

So with my level of spinal cord,

I can move my arms around pretty well,

but I can't move any of my actual individual joints

or fingers on my hand.

About two years after I had my injury,

I kept asking my doctors what can I look forward to,

what's the future gonna be like?

I was fortunate enough to be in the right place

at the right time, when they were looking

for patients for this study.

- In a spinal cord injury,

the communication between the brain and the body

has been damaged, so our idea was to create a bridge

around that damaged spinal cord,

so that we could regain control in a limb

that was paralyzed.

You've got sort of a similar pinch for another grip

that's gonna show a similar pattern.

- Exactly.

- The system works by allowing the stimulation sleeve

to electrically shock your muscles

to make them contract and move.

- We put the electrodes on and we use

pre-programmed stimulation to evoke motions

in the hand, wrist and fingers

that we would plan to use with the full system.

If we're successful, then we enroll them

into the full study.

- And then came that million dollar questions.

- Would you like to be able to control

the stimulation device with your thoughts?

- The basic three components of the NeuroLife system

is the chip in the brain and the ability

to collect that data,

the computer that takes those signals

decodes the intent, and then re-encodes

those to deliver those to the third part of the system,

which is the stimulation system

that actually evokes the muscle motions.

- The surgical aspect of the study is something

that I was a little worried about.

It was an unneeded surgery,

and there's a lot of risks with any type of surgery,

let alone a brain surgery.

- Sort of the range of bad things that can happen

are having a stroke, getting pneumonia,

not being able to see or hear.

There's always the risk of death with the surgery.

- I knew that if I was able to regain

any function in my hand,

it was worth taking that risk of the surgery

and potentially losing everything.

But if this is something that I could do,

it would really impact my life in a great way

and be able to impact other peoples' lives in the future.

So I was all in.

- We are ready.

- Ian puts himself at risk.

Why do you want to go in for two brain surgeries

that you don't need?

One to put the chip in, and another one to take it out?

And the answer was,

that he wants to take advantage of his situation.

He views it as an opportunity to advance the science

and advance the field of rehabilitation medicine.

- The first day where we were able to take

all the parts of the system and connect them together

to see if this would work

was something extremely exciting,

but also nerve wracking at the same time,

because no one knew for sure

until we were able to connect everything together

and for me to actually think about opening

and closing my hands.

- Good?

What do you think?

(clapping)

- That first movement was amazing.

It's almost something there are no words for,

because factually speaking this is not something

that Ian should be able to do.

This should be something biologically

that is impossible.

- This is the first time that the limb

of a quadriplegic has been reanimated

using a brain-computer interface

to regain fine motor control.

- After we were able to get

that initial movement of my hand,

we really went to the drawing board and said,

okay now what all can we do with it?

- [Reporter] Playing a guitar video game

seems simple enough,

but for Ian Burkhart, it's a major step forward.

- So we've been doing sessions now

for the last three and a half years.

I definitely take it as a job.

I enjoy it it, but it's work.

- If you think about all the things

that Ian risked by having the surgery,

it's really just staggering.

He's a pioneer.

We're all inspired by him.

- A huge motivating factor for me to be involved

with the study was other people.

It gave me that huge light at the end of the tunnel,

because it allows you to change the world for other people.

#THIS IS LUPUS - John Braybrook - Duration: 1:36.

I am John Braybrook

I got diagnosed with lupus in February 2011 after having symptoms for five years

previous to the diagnosis.

My condition is controlled with hydroxychloroquine and

I'm fairly stable at the moment

Friends and family were supportive of my diagnosis although some were unaware what

actually lupus is.

The hardest aspect of lupus is the unpredictability of

what could, or might happen. Last year I discovered I had a leak in the heart

valve that required surgery. This was caused by the lupus.

I had surgery in August 2016

My biggest achievement since diagnosis of lupus was returning to running after

having the heart surgery. Actually getting back to standard I was at around four

years ago, which was really an amazing achievement

Tony Ferguson: If McGregor vs. Diaz 3 is next, everything 'UFC stands for' goes 'out the window' - Duration: 7:19.

Tony Ferguson: If McGregor vs. Diaz 3 is next, everything 'UFC stands for' goes 'out the window'

Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee haven't even competed yet for the UFC interim lightweight strap, and already the narrative about what comes next for the 155-pound division has started inching past the two headliners of UFC 216.

On Wednesday, a little over a week before Ferguson and Lee throw down in Las Vegas for the right to challenge UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, the Irishman's head coach John Kavanagh called for McGregor's first title defense to come in a blockbuster trilogy fight against Nate Diaz in early 2018.

Such a booking would effectively make Ferguson vs.

Lee little more than a placeholder for an opportunity long in the horizon.

And for Ferguson, whose streak of nine consecutive wins is unrivaled in the 155-pound division, that's just not acceptable.

"The next fight for Conor should be whoever wins this interim lightweight title," Ferguson said flatly Thursday on a UFC 216 media conference call.

"Regardless of winning or losing this, myself or if it's Kevin Lee, that b*tch (McGregor) needs to defend or vacate and he needs to unify that belt.

Anything else, with as far as him trying to fight Nate and everything else, that's the bullsh*t rankings and everything else that the UFC stands for just [going] out the window, man.".

Ferguson, 33, has seemingly been on the precipice of a title fight for the past several years.

His unparalleled run of lightweight dominance includes wins over Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, and former champion Rafael dos Anjos, among many others.

In almost any other scenario, a streak like his would have warranted a title shot ages ago, but McGregor's reign as champion has been unique, to say the least, and Kavanagh suggested Wednesday that in the afterglow of Mayweather vs.

McGregor, "The Notorious" is now focusing only on "doing fights because they're fun" rather than booking matchups based on divisional merit.

And Ferguson can see the writing on the wall.

"This has been my division before McNuggets even stepped into this b*tch," Ferguson said.

"Even when I was at Paradigm Sports Management, he signed up at 145 pounds.

The agreement was he wasn't going to come up to 155 pounds, but that raised a conflict of interest and I'm pissed, so that b*tch needs to fight me or he needs to fight the guy that's holding the belt.

"I mean, really? You have rankings for a reason," Ferguson added.

"You have an interim belt for a reason — so you can unify the thing.

The guy (Diaz) is what, a top-10 (lightweight)? Not even a top-five? Kevin Lee's got more heart than Nate, and I have more heart than this whole entire division.

So if they want to put that fight together, then that's great, but you know the fans will be pissed, because obviously they know that f*cking Diaz and Conor is going to make a lot of money, but the real righteous thing to do is to make sure the belts become unified.

That's what really needs to happen.".

Nonetheless, Ferguson admitted that he wouldn't be surprised if Diaz somehow gets the title shot over the winner of UFC 216's main event, even though Diaz has sidelined himself for over a year since losing to the Irishman at UFC 202.

"Money talks, bullsh*t walks, man.

So obviously they're going to protect their pocket and they're going to keep McNuggets away from a real contender," Ferguson said.

"Real belt or no belt, it doesn't matter what anybody says, this is a belt that's going to have to be unified, otherwise he's going to have to defend or vacate.

Ultimately, Ferguson acknowledged that the entire discussion is pointless if he falters against Lee, so for now his aim lies solely on pushing his streak to 10 straight wins at UFC 216.

Then, and only then, will he allow himself to worry about McGregor's infamous red panty nights and what comes next.

"I don't like red. I like blue.

That's my color.

But red panty, green panty, it don't f*cking matter," Ferguson said.

"Whoever they put in front of me.

And my first manager told me, 'Tony, you make your money by winning,' and that's Brock Lesnar's manager.

He told me, 'Don't even worry about anything else, everything is going to fall into place.' And I done kept that same attitude.

I signed with my management and I kept the same attitude and I'm not changing any time soon.".
