Celebrity New : Fans are calling for Wonder Woman's true sexuality to be revealed in the... - Duration: 4:22.Fans are calling for Wonder Woman's true sexuality to be revealed in the upcoming sequel
A petition has been launched to make Wonder Woman bisexual in her new film. This years enormously successful release netted more than $800 million worldwide, as Gal Gadots character cemented her place as one of the best superheroes around.
A sequel, also directed by Patty Jenkins, will be out in 2019. In the midst of Bisexual Awareness Week, fans are clamouring for their hero to be expressly represented in her true form.
Last year, veteran Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka confirmed last year that Wonder Woman has obviously had relationships with women on the Amazons island of Themyscira. Fans were absolutely delighted.
Rucka said: "When you start to think about giving the concept of Themyscira its due, the answer is, 'How can they not all be in same sex relationships?' Right?. "It makes no logical sense otherwise," he told Comicosity.
"Now, are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? The answer is obviously yes.
Rucka also introduced the character of Kasia, a female lover who stays behind when Diana leaves the women-only paradise of Themyscira to help save the world.
Ahead of the new release – which unlike the first, World War One-themed film, will be set in the US – a campaign has been started to ensure that Wonder Womans sexuality is made explicit.
Gianna Collier-Pitts, who was a campus ambassador for GLAAD at New York University, has started a change. org petition that has already picked up more than 400 signatures.
In the petition, which will be delivered to Warner Bros, Gianna writes that the Wonder Woman film was a success for everyone…except the bisexual community.
She points to Ruckas comments as proof that Diana is not straight, asking: Why is it so hard to translate this for the silver screen?.
Gianna continued: Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesnt make a difference but for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me.
She explained that representation is power. As I was coming to terms with my bisexuality, I saw few – if any – characters that I could relate to, and those that I did see were almost always portrayed in a negative light.
We are oversexualized and underrepresented. We are called greedy, dishonest, and confused.. She said that bisexual people are made to feel invisible and in doing so we begin to see ourselves as invisible.
Making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvels cinematic universes, and would solidify her place as a true role model for women of all ages and identities.

Episode 1113 | Arguments For And Against The Proposed Healthy Workforce Ordinance - Duration: 13:27.ALBUQUERQUE VOTERS ARE ASKED THIS YEAR TO DECIDE WHETHER TO
APPROVE A PROPOSED ORDINANCE THAT WOULD REQUIRE EMPLOYEES
IN THE STATE'S LARGEST CITY TO BE ABLE TO ACCRUE SICK LEAVE.
THE BALLOT MEASURE HAS BEEN CONTROVERSIAL, AS YOU KNOW.
CORRESPONDENT MEGAN KAMERICK SAT DOWN WITH A SUPPORTER AND
OPPONENT TO DISCUSS WHAT THE SICK LEAVE ORDINANCE MEANS FOR
WORKERS, BUSINESS OWNERS AND OTHER RESIDENTS.
>> HERE WITH ME TODAY TO DISCUSS THE ARGUMENT FOR AND
AGAINST THE HEALTHY WORKFORCE PROPOSAL IS ELIZABETH WAGONER,
ATTORNEY WITH NEW MEXICO CENTER ON LAW AND POVERTY AND
PAT ROGERS, ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE NEW MEXICO
ASSOCIATION OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY AND NAIOP COMMERCIAL
DEVELOPERS.
>> ELIZABETH, WHY PUSH FOR THIS ORDINANCE NOW AT A LOCAL
LEVEL RATHER THAN STATE?
>> WELL, ALBUQUERQUE WORKERS CURRENTLY LACK THE RIGHT TO
EARN SICK LEAVE AT WORK.
WHAT THIS ORDINANCE WOULD DO IS ENSURE THAT WORKERS IN
ALBUQUERQUE NO LONGER HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN A PAYCHECK AND
TAKING CARE OF A SICK FAMILY MEMBER OR RECOVERING FROM
ILLNESS.
IT PROVIDES THAT WORKERS CAN EARN ONE HOUR OF SICK LEAVE
FOR EVERY 30 HOURS THEY WORK, AND THAT WOULD ALLOW WORKERS
TO TAKE THAT EARNED SICK LEAVE FIVE DAYS IN A SMALL BUSINESS
AND SEVEN DAYS IN LARGE BUSINESSES.
IT WOULD ALSO ENSURE THAT WOMEN WHO ARE ESCAPING
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SITUATIONS CAN TAKE EARNED LEAVE IN ORDER
TO DO THAT.
>> THIS IS ALL BUSINESSES THAT HAVE A PRESENCE IN
ALBUQUERQUE?
>> THAT IS RIGHT, IT WOULD COVER BUSINESSES WITH A
PHYSICAL PRESENCE IN ALBUQUERQUE, FOR PROFIT
BUSINESSES OR NONPROFITS.
>> WHAT ABOUT BUT NOT STATE ENTITIES OR TRIBAL ENTITIES?
>> THAT IS RIGHT, YOU COULDN'T HAVE A CITY ORDINANCE AGAINST
THOSE ENTITIES.
>> EMPLOYERS ARE CONCERNED RIGHT NOW THEY HAVE TO CHANGE
THEIR POLICIES AND THE ORDINANCE LEAVES THEM OPEN TO
LAWSUITS AND SOME EMPLOYERS HAVE PAID TIME OFF POLICIES
WHERE THEY COMBINE VACATION AND SICK LEAVE AND IT IS UP TO
YOU HOW YOU TAKE IT.
WILL THEY NOW HAVE TO CREATE A SPECIFIC SICK LEAVE POLICY?
>> I AM GLAD YOU ASKED ME ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THIS IS A
COMMON MISCONCEPTION PUT OUT BY THE POLITICAL OPPOSITION TO
TRY TO GET VOTERS TO VOTE AGAINST THE ORDINANCE.
TRUTH IS THAT PAID TIME OFF POLICY DOES NOT HAVE TO CHANGE
AT ALL.
WHEN EMPLOYERS OFFER, FOR EXAMPLE, PAID TIME OFF THEY
CAN TAKE FOR ANY REASON, EMPLOYERS DO NOT HAVE TO OFFER
SEPARATE SICK TIME AS LONG AS THEY ARE OFFERING AT LEAST
THOSE FIVE DAYS OR SEVEN DAYS IF IT IS A BUSINESS THAT IS
MORE THAN 40 EMPLOYEES, THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO CHANGE A
THING.
THEY DON'T NEED TO TRACK SICK TIME SEPARATELY, THE POLICY
STAYS THE SAME.
IT IS REALLY JUST KIND OF A FEAR MONGERING TACTIC WE ARE
SEEING FROM THE BUSINESS INTERESTS THAT JUST DON'T WANT
PEOPLE TO GET SICK TIME AT ALL.
>> PAT ROGERS, OUR CITY HAS A LOT OF WORKERS THAT CAN'T
AFFORD TO TAKE UNPAID DAYS OFF.
THEY MAY COME TO WORK SICK OR LEAVE SICK KIDS AT HOME.
DOESN'T IT MAKE SENSE TO GIVE THEM SOME KIND OF SAFETY NET?
>> SICK LEAVE IS SOMETHING THAT SUPPORTED BY EVERYONE.
THIS PARTICULAR ORDINANCE SHOULDN'T BE SUPPORTED BY ANY
EMPLOYEE OR EMPLOYER.
THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS OR IN THIS INSTANCE, THE DETAILS
ARE THE DEVIL.
THIS IS THE MOST EXTREME AND ONEROUS VERSION OF THIS
PROVISION THAT IS BEING PUSHED NATIONWIDE BY UNIONS AND TRIAL
LAWYER INTERESTS.
THIS WILL BE A JOB AND OPPORTUNITY KILLER FOR OUR
CITY.
DENVER REJECTED A WEAK SISTER VERSION OF THIS A FEW YEARS
AGO.
WE ARE IN AN INTERNATIONAL OR AT LEAST NATIONAL COMPETITIVE
SITUATION.
DENVER IS BOOMING NOW.
ALBUQUERQUE IS STRUGGLING.
DENVER REJECTED A MILD VERSION OF THIS YEARS AGO.
WE CAN'T AFFORD AN ORDINANCE THAT PENALIZES SMALL
BUSINESSES, CHARITIES AND SO ON.
THIS WAS DRAFTED IN THE DARK WITHOUT ANY INPUT BY ANY
BUSINESS INTEREST TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS WOULDN'T BE WORKABLE.
WITH REGARD TO PTO TIME OFF, THERE IS NOT A SINGLE POLICY,
PTO, IN EXISTENCE THAT WILL COMPLY WITH THIS.
THE REASON IS BECAUSE OF THE VERY EXPANSIVE DEFINITIONS OF
FAMILY MEMBERS THAT IS PROVIDED HERE.
THIS ORDINANCE IS MORE EXTREME AND MORE ONEROUS THAN
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO, WASHINGTON D.C.,
CHICAGO, OR ANY CITY IN AMERICA.
>> WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE?
YOU SAID THAT EVERYONE SUPPORTS SICK LEAVE.
WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE?
>> TO HAVE ELECTED OFFICIALS, CITY COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR
ADDRESS SICK LEAVE.
AND THE ALTERNATIVE IS TO HAVE PUBLIC MEETINGS AND PUBLIC
DISCOURSE AND INPUT TO ADDRESS THE OBVIOUS FLAWS AND PROBABLY
INTENDED FLAWS THAT PERMEATE THIS WHOLE DOCUMENT.
>> SO, ELIZABETH FOLLOW UP ON THE DETAILS HE MENTIONED THAT
PEOPLE ARE FINDING PROBLEMATIC, FOR INSTANCE, ONE
OF THEM IS IF AN EMPLOYER FIRES A WORKER WITHIN 90 DAYS
OF THE EMPLOYEE TAKING SICK LEAVE, THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED
RETALIATION AND HE BROUGHT UP THE EXPANDED DEFINITION OF
FAMILY MEMBERS.
ARE THESE THINGS NEGOTIABLE IN TERMS OF THIS ORDINANCE?
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE CONCERNS PEOPLE HAVE?
>> THESE PROVISIONS ARE COMPLETELY STANDARD IN THE
EARNED SICK DAYS THAT PASSED ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
SO, ARIZONA, FOR EXAMPLE, RECENTLY PASSED A STATE-WIDE
EARNED SICK DAYS LAW THAT CONTAINS THESE EXACT SAME
PROVISIONS.
>> THE WHOLE STATE, THOUGH.
>> THE WHOLE STATE PASSED IT SO THIS IDEA THAT THERE IS
SOMETHING UNUSUAL OR EXTREME ABOUT THESE PROVISIONS, JUST
IS COMPLETELY FABRICATED BECAUSE THESE PROVISIONS ARE
EXACTLY THE SAME IN ARIZONA'S LAW IN TERMS OF THE
PROTECTIONS FOR EMPLOYEES WHO TAKE SICK LEAVE TO ENSURE THEY
WON'T BE FIRED FOR TAKING SICK LEAVE.
IN TERMS OF THE DEFINITION MUCH FAMILY MEMBERS THAT
RECOGNIZES THAT PEOPLE HAVE A BROAD RANGE OF FAMILY CARE
GIVING RESPONSIBILITIES AND THERE SHOULDN'T BE A DISPUTE
THAT, YOU KNOW, YOUR FOSTER CHILD, FOR EXAMPLE, IS
SOMEBODY THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE SICK LEAVE TO
CARE FOR IF THAT CHILD GETS SICK.
AND, SO IN TERMS OF THE RETALIATION PROVISIONS, IT IS
IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT IF A MOM HAS TO STAY HOME TO TAKE
CARE OF HER CHILD, WHEN HER CHILD GETS SICK, THAT HER
EMPLOYER CAN'T FIRE HER FOR DOING THAT, BECAUSE SHE HAS
CARE GIVING RESPONSIBILITIES, AND SO THIS ORDINANCE INSURES
THAT IF AN EMPLOYER FIRES AN EMPLOYEE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF
THAT PERSON TAKING SICK LEAVE, THEN THE EMPLOYER HAS TO GIVE
A REASON FOR THE TERMINATION.
AND AS LONG AS THE REASON FOR THE TERMINATION DOESN'T RELATE
TO SICK LEAVE, THE EMPLOYEE WOULD HAVE TO PROVE THAT
REASON WAS NOT TRUE.
WHICH MIRRORS HOW THOSE TYPES OF ALLEGATIONS IN EMPLOYMENT
CASES HAPPEN IN ANY TYPE OF CASE.
IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME WITH ARIZONA'S LAW.
>> CAN I ASK YOU ABOUT ONE PROVISION WHICH REQUIRES
EMPLOYERS WHO ASK EMPLOYEES FOR ANY DOCTOR'S NOTE TO PAY
THE COST OF THE MEDICAL APPOINTMENT.
WHY INCLUDE THAT?
>> SO, THAT IS ACTUALLY NOT QUITE WHAT IT SAYS.
WHAT THAT PROVISION SAYS IS THAT IF THE EMPLOYER REQUIRES
AN EMPLOYEE TO PROVIDE MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION OF AN ILLNESS,
TO JUSTIFY BEING OUT OF WORK, THEN THE EMPLOYEE WOULD HAVE
TO PAY ANY OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE ASSOCIATED WITH
OBTAINING THAT DOCUMENTATION.
SO, EMPLOYERS, YOU KNOW, CAN CHOOSE TO REQUIRE
DOCUMENTATION OR NOT, SO, IF AN EMPLOYER DOESN'T REQUIRE
THAT, THEN OBVIOUSLY THE EMPLOYEE PAYS HIMSELF FOR ANY
MEDICAL TREATMENT THAT HE GETS FOR ILLNESS, BUT IF THE
EMPLOYER REQUIRES DOCUMENTATION, IF THERE IS
OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES ASSOCIATED PARTICULARLY
IMPORTANT FOR WORKERS WHO DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE,
THEN THE EMPLOYER COVERS THAT.
>> YOU AND OTHER OPPONENTS ARGUED THAT THIS MAKES
ALBUQUERQUE LESS COMPETITIVE, AS YOU SAID.
BUT, A NUMBER OF OTHER MUNICIPALITIES IN THE STATE,
AS WE HEARD ARIZONA HAVE PASSED SIMILAR ORDINANCES.
SO, WOULDN'T THIS PUT US IN LINE WITH THE MERGING TRENDS
IN OTHER PLACES TO MAKE US ATTRACTIVE TO WORKERS?
>> EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION BUT NOT
ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN SET OF FACTS.
ARIZONA'S ORDINANCE IS NOT THE SAME AS THIS.
THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT COMPARING TWO STATUTES IS THAT
YOUR VIEWERS CAN ACTUALLY DO THAT,
PATROGERSLAW.COM/SICKLEAVE.ASPX AND I HAVE COLLECTED IN A 67
PAGE DOCUMENT A COMPARISON TO ESTABLISH UNEQUIVOCALLY, THIS
IS THE MOST EXTREME AND ONEROUS PROVISION IN AMERICA.
FOR EXAMPLE, ARIZONA DOES NOT HAVE THIS LAST PROVISION WHICH
PREVENTS ANY CHANGE WHATSOEVER, ANY SUBSTANTIVE
CHANGE TO FIX THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE INHERENT IN THIS 14
POINT DOCUMENT.
THE 67 PAGE COMPARISON ADDRESSES ALL THE EXTREME
NATURE OF THIS, INCLUDING NOTICE.
THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT OF NOTICE IN THE ALBUQUERQUE
ORDINANCE.
BERKELEY REQUIRES REASONABLE NOTICE, SAN FRANCISCO REQUIRES
REASONABLE NOTICE.
THERE IS NO NOTICE PROVISION WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO TAKE
OFF.
WE ARE IN A COMPETITIVE SITUATION.
THIS IS GOING TO KILL JOBS, IT IS GOING TO CAUSE BUSINESSES
TO LEAVE AND IT IS GOING TO HURT EMPLOYEES BECAUSE THEY
ARE GOING TO LOSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVANCEMENT,
THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR JOBS.
THIS IS GOING TO HARM NEW MEXICO LIKE NOTHING EVER
BEFORE.
THERE IS NO EXCEPTION.
AS IN MINIMUM WAGE, THERE IS AN EXCEPTION FOR CHARITIES,
THERE IS NO EXCEPTION HERE FOR NONPROFITS, CHARITIES OR SMALL
BUSINESSES.
THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE SICK LEAVE.
THE NEXT DAY ANY COUNCILOR CAN INTRODUCE A BILL AND SOME
RATIONAL PROCESS WITH PUBLIC MEETINGS AND PUBLIC INPUT, SO
WE CAN HEAR FROM ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS.
NOT JUST THE UNIONS AND TRIAL LAWYERS THAT DRAFTED THIS.
>> WE ARE AN ALREADY STRUGGLING ECONOMY IN
ALBUQUERQUE AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS SAY WE ARE SAYING THIS
IS GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF CONSEQUENCES, SUCH AS FORCING
THEM TO CUT BACK STAFF OR MAYBE HOLD OFF ON EXPANSION
PLANS.
SO, WHAT IS YOUR RESPONSE TO THAT.
>> THERE IS A COUPLE ISSUES THERE.
I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT IS TO KNOW THAT A NUMBER OF OTHER
CITIES AND STATES THAT HAVE PASSED EARNED SICK DAYS LAWS
LIKE THIS ONE, THERE HAVE BEEN ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDIES ON
EXACTLY THIS ISSUE.
ALL THE STUDIES SHOW THERE IS NO NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE
ECONOMY OR IN TERMS OF JOBS LEAVING.
IN FACT, A NUMBER OF STUDIES SHOW A CORRELATION BETWEEN
INCREASES IN JOB GROWTH COMPARED TO NEIGHBORING
JURISDICTIONS THAT HAVE NOT PASSED EARNED SICK LEAVE LAWS.
SO THIS IDEA THERE IS GOING TO BE JOB LOSS ISN'T BORNE OUT BY
THE EXPERIENCE OF ANY OTHER JURISDICTION THAT HAS PASSED
EARNED SICK LEAVE LAWS.
IN TERMS OF HOW EMPLOYEES USE SICK LEAVE, AND I THINK MANY
OF US ALREADY KNOW THIS FROM OUR OWN EXPERIENCE WITH SICK
LEAVE, EMPLOYEES TREAT SICK LEAVE AS SORT OF A FORM OF
INSURANCE POLICY.
IT IS NOT AS IF YOU GET FIVE DAYS OR SEVEN DAYS A YEAR AND
EVERY SINGLE EMPLOYEE IS TAKING THOSE DAYS.
THAT IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE SICK TO USE THEM, HAVE A
QUALIFIED REASON TO USE THEM AND EMPLOYEES KNOW THAT IF
THEY HAVE ONLY GOT A CERTAIN AMOUNT, THEY ARE GOING TO SAVE
THOSE FOR WHEN THEY ACTUALLY NEED THEM.
SO, I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR FOLKS TO THINK ABOUT HOW
SICK LEAVE ACTUALLY WORKS IN REAL LIFE.
IT IS A SITUATION WHERE SOMEONE ACTUALLY IS SICK,
ACTUALLY HAS A SICK CHILD, AND IS ACTUALLY NOT GOING TO WORK
IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THEY GET WELL AND AREN'T PASSING ON
THEIR DISEASE TO OTHER PEOPLE OR TO CUSTOMERS, IN A
RESTAURANT, PATIENTS IN A HOSPITAL, THAT KIND OF THING.
>> SO, WE ARE ALMOST OUT OF TIME.
A FINAL OFFER, FINAL PITCH TO VOTERS THAT GO TO THE POLLS
THIS WEEKEND.
>> THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO READ THIS AND UNDERSTAND
THE IMPACT THAT THIS IS GOING TO HAVE ON OUR CITY FOR
PERHAPS -- >> IT IS LONG.
WE DO HAVE A LINK TO THE WEBSITE.
>> YEAH, THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING BECAUSE THERE
IS NOTHING LIKE THIS IN AMERICA AND THIS IS GOING TO
PUT ALBUQUERQUE EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS AT A SIGNIFICANT
DISADVANTAGE AS WE COMPETE WITH DENVER, AND ALL OF THE
SURROUNDING PLACES FOR JOBS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR KIDS
AND FOR OUR FRIENDS AND FOR OUR FAMILIES.
>> ELIZABETH.
YOUR FINAL ARGUMENT.
>> NOW, IS THE TIME TO PASS SICK LEAVE IN ALBUQUERQUE.
THIS IS THE ORDINANCE THAT HAS PASSED IN OTHER JURISDICTIONS
AND IT IS WORKING IN OTHER JURISDICTIONS.
IT IS WHAT WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY'S HEALTH, TO
ENSURE THAT WOMEN CAN ESCAPE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, TO ENSURE
WE ARE NOT TRANSMITTING DISEASE THROUGH RESTAURANTS
AND HOSPITALS.
IT IS A GREAT ORDINANCE, 24,000 PEOPLE SIGNED A
PETITION TO PUT IT ON THE BALLOT.
AND IT IS TIME TO VOTE SICK DAYS INTO LAW.
>> THANK YOU BOTH FOR COMING AND TALKING ABOUT THIS.

Designing Audio for Modern Learning Programs - Duration: 2:19.[music plays]
Greetings! Phylise Banner here with you again, Curator InSync Blended Learning
Hub. As we wrap up this campaign in the Hub, we consider more specific aspects of
audio element design and production, including strategies for working within
different budget constraints. Again our lessons and curated resources will
highlight what's worked best for us and showcase some of our favorite tools, tips,
and tricks. Do you listen to podcasts, books on tape stories read aloud, music,
talk radio? I do! I love listening to Radio Lab and other podcast series. I'm
typically doing something else at the same time, like tying flies, or knitting,
or cleaning the house. But I love to listen and learn. I encourage you to
think about ways that you listen and learn, and the characteristics that make
for an engaging listening experience. Is it the human voice, sound effects, music?
You tell me. We have a new infographic shared in the Hub, highlighting
podcasting tips and tricks, which can get you started or expand your podcast
production skillset. We also have a new podcast highlighted in this campaign
featuring Marie Hoffman, a voice-over talent actor. Marie shares what it takes
to be a voice actor, and how her studio is configured. It's interesting to hear
her natural voice on the podcast. She sounds just like you and me.
But I tell you it's a different story when she steps into character. As we wrap
up the campaign, we're going to be taking a deep dive into the Effective Practice
Scorecard. We'll review recommendations together
and discuss ways that you can use this tool to guide your practice. If you
haven't done so yet, I recommend downloading this campaign's Conversation
Card, and partaking in a scenario-based exercise where your team needs to
determine the best approach to producing a video series for a customer service
team. Does it make sense to use in-house talent or should be what we looking for
outside professional service? Always an interesting conversation. I look forward
to hearing from you on how you think video and audio learning assets can
boost levels of learner engagement within both formal and informal blended
learning approaches. Happy travels on your learning journey, and I'll see you
online!

[HEALTHH]6 Tips to Ease Stress While Waiting for a Heart Transplant - Duration: 5:03.6 Tips to Ease Stress While Waiting for a Heart Transplant
Fast Facts: Waiting times for heart transplants vary based on a patients condition, blood type, geographic region, and more. You may benefit from talking with others who've had a heart transplant.
Many transplant recipients grieve for the organ donor and the donors family. More than 2,000 heart transplants are performed each year in the United States, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
But before you can get a heart transplant, the wait for a new heart after heart failure (due to any condition) can be grueling and emotionally and physically challenging, as patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals know well.
Here, five heart transplant professionals, including transplant surgeons, share tips from their experiences with patients.
Lean on Staff for Help Whenever you have questions, call someone on the heart transplant team, says Tamara Kelley, RN, a heart transplant coordinator at the University of California in San Francisco.
Dont let things weigh on your mind, and dont ever be afraid to reach out for help, she says. Most patients go through high highs and low lows, says Kelley.
So her team includes psychiatrists and social workers who are all tuned in to what someone awaiting a heart transplant may be going through. Its a lot of talking and a lot of reassurance, she says of her work.
Take Control of What You Can Although it can seem like nothing is in your control when you're on that heart waiting list, look for something you can control, Kelley suggests.
She remembers one woman who had been treated for heart failure for 25 years; when the woman suddenly got sicker, she was told she needed a heart device known as a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) — and eventually a heart transplant.
The news wasnt unexpected, but when you first hear it, it can make you feel helpless, says Kelley. The woman decided to take control in her own way.
She told the medical staff, Okay, Im going to go home and spend the weekend with my dogs. After that experience, Kelley says, the patient returned to the hospital, ready to undergo treatment.
If you're stable enough to leave the hospital while you wait for a transplant, you can resume normal activities as you are able, advises Kelley. This can give you a sense of control over your life.
Understand That No One Can Be Sure How Long You'll Have to Wait Theres not an average patient, and there are different levels of medical urgencies, says Joel Newman, a spokesperson for UNOS.
Many factors play into how long a patient will wait, he says, including blood type.
For instance, he says, If you are an O [blood type], you can only get [the heart of] another O. Waiting time varies in different parts of the country, and you can check the UNOS site for wait-time data by region.
But because of the many factors involved, your waiting time can be unpredictable, according to Josef Stehlik, MD, MPH, medical director of the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantations international thoracic transplant registry, and of the heart transplant program at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Even so, he says, doctors typically give patients an estimated waiting time: a range based on their condition and where they are on the list. The harsh reality is that some patients dont survive the wait.
According to UNOS, 22 people die in the United States each day waiting for donated organs, including hearts. Once that ideal donor heart is located, patients and families should know they need to move quickly.
We would like you to be at the hospital within two hours, Newman says.
Learn How Advances in Technology May Help These days, many patients have what doctors call a bridge to transplant, with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to help their heart pump well while they wait.
These devices have been available for many years, but in the last 10 years, there's been a marked increase in the number of them implanted, says Michael Givertz, MD, medical director of the heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support program at Brigham and Womens Hospital and professor of cardiovascular medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Thats because the devices have become more streamlined and more durable. Survival has improved significantly, and the complication rate has decreased, says Dr.
Givertz. Those who get an LVAD and are discharged, he says, should be living life to the fullest and maximizing the quality of life, not sitting and waiting for their transplant.
Expect Donor Grief — It's Common It's a tough reality, as Amy Hackmann, MD, a heart transplant surgeon and assistant professor of clinical surgery at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, knows.
One of the hardest things people struggle with is that something bad has to happen to someone else for them to get their heart. She tries to help patients cope with that grief by reminding them, Whatever is going to happen to their donor is going to happen. Instead of feeling guilty that the donor has to die to give a heart-transplant patient life, she suggests patients focus on the fact that the donor was thinking ahead to make life easier for others.
Once some time has passed, Dr. Hackmann says, We encourage people to write a letter to the donor family.
to thank them and to tell them what they plan to do with the second chance they have been given. UNOS offers help to those struggling over what to write.
Some recipients and their families are so grateful for a new heart that they become activists in organ donor educational efforts, say Drs. They do everything they can to raise awareness of organ donation, says Givertz.
Those who have been through the wait know how difficult it can be, Stehlik adds. And they also know that increasing the organ supply is a sure way to shorten the transplant waiting times.
Talk to Transplant Recipients About Their Experience Asking your doctor about the transplant procedure is just one way to learn about heart transplants, Stehlik says.
He also encourages patients who need a transplant to meet with another patient, one on one, or in support groups. That allows you to be truly informed before consenting to the process.
You need much more than the perspective of the medical team, Stehlik says of heart transplant recipients. "They need to hear the experience of someone who has gone through the same experience they're considering..

Best Face Masks for Acne: Acne Experts on Mud, Sulfur, Collagen & More | SKINCARE CONFIDENTIAL - Duration: 12:28.(laughing)
- Hello.
- Hey guys, it is Malbec and Mask special today
on Facebook Live.
Laura and I are going to--
well, I don't know, this is just
the best thing ever. - Yes.
And we are going to show you--
and I am wearing a mask,
I just look more pale than usual
but I actually have a mask on.
I'm gonna show you.
But Laura looks great.
How's your mask?
- It's feeling pretty good,
I can barely move my face
which is the desired effect - (laughing)
- so-- - Excellent.
- It's good. - Right.
So, you know, we are gonna show you
several types of masks,
why you might wanna use them,
what some of our favorites are,
why wine is just a great thing to do when you're masking,
uh... - Pairs very well.
- I think so.
And cheers! - Cheers.
- Happy Malbec and Mask Special.
- Tuesday, yeah.
- (laughs) Let's do this every Tuesday.
- Mm-hmm. - Mm-hmm.
- Mm-hmm. - (laughter)
- There we go.
So okay, I'll start with my mask
since you guys just think I'm more pale than usual.
I am actually wearing a mask,
it's the Josie Maran, okay?
You're gonna see it a little bit backwards here,
but this is the one.
It is an Argan hydrating
and detoxifying treatment.
So this is it.
It's a whipped mud mask,
I can say that.
And it feels really nice.
I just don't look mask-y enough.
- I can see it though
'cause I'm sitting very close to you,
and I normally touch your face - I know.
- but I'm not sure if you want me to do that.
- You can touch my neck (laughs).
Still soft. - Still soft.
- And which mask are you using?
- Okay, so I opted to do
the Peter Thomas Raw Therapeutic Sulfur mask.
So this is more targeted towards acne patients.
Sulfur's a really great acne treatment,
and I happen to have a breakout on my chin right now,
so I'm hoping this - Excellent!
- does some wonders for it.
- And you know what's great about this
is that when you told me you were putting on
a sulfur mask, I thought I was gonna have to bear through
15 minutes of really stinky like sulfur
but-- - Rotten egg.
- This is amazing, it doesn't smell at all,
so for sulfur I have to say that's just brilliant.
So don't be scared to purchase this mask
if you're interested because of the sulfur.
It smells great.
Yeah, there we go.
And mine, I should just say,
because it's more of like a detoxifier,
it's kinda if your pores are feeling a little clogged,
this is a good one to just--
any kind of mud mask.
But it's nice to just kind of pull that gunk out,
right? - Yes, absolutely.
- Yeah, so that's what we got here.
Now, we did show up to work today
with makeup on,
and we just used our favorite, micellar water.
I used my Bioderma,
which, you know, I love. - Yeah.
And I used the Garnier Skin Active.
This one's a little bit more accessible,
you can find this in those drugstores,
Target, et cetera. - Right.
- So this is a great option - And it's great!
- if you can't find that one,
but yeah, I like this one too.
- Yeah, and we just used some cotton circles
to just-- you know, quickly--
so it just goes to show you can kinda mask anywhere.
You just bring your micellar water,
mask in the car, mask at the shopping mall,
I don't know. There we go.
- [Girl] Didn't we show the differences
between those two micellar waters?
- Yeah, well, you know-- - There's really not
much of a difference. - Honestly, they're very--
they're very similar.
I mean, what I like about the Bioderma,
it's really gentle, but so is the Garnier, honestly.
I mean, they're kinda neck to neck.
The Bioderma's kinda cool if you can find the one
that has the built in pump,
because then you just take your little cotton pad
and you ch-ch-ch, you know?
Kinda like at the nail salon? - Yes.
That I do like about it.
- Yeah, so I really like-- - It's very convenient.
- But, you know, they run out of
even Beautylish, which sells Bioderma online,
they run out of the ones with the pump a lot.
But anyway, any good non pore-clogging ingredient
micellar water, that and a little cotton circle,
make-up off, mask on, there we go.
- Drink wine. - Drink...
Wine. - Have friends,
which you can't see, - Relax.
but we will show in a minute.
- We are going to show you our friends
which are modeling a variety of masks for us.
I will say we have Emily who is using
our Water Replenishment, Dr. Jart.
This is a nice hydrating mask, okay?
So if your skin is feeling a little parched
particularly as winter is coming.
- Winter is coming, - (laughs) We are
getting into-- - as you all know,
December 21st, mark your calendars.
- Winter is coming.
I never learned what this meant.
- Um, here she is. - Here she is!
Okay, this is a great mask to wear,
not around your children, you will scare them to death.
However, if you're looking to scare
the bejeezus out of your husband, excellent choice,
when he walks in the door.
So she is rocking that mask.
- (laughing) Thank you, Emily.
- Thank you, Emily.
So this one-- again.
Any of the--
I like, run any mask through cosdna.com
to make sure it doesn't have poor ingredients
that are clogging your pores, - Yeah.
- but this one, the Dr. Jart
or any hydrating mask can be really great
to just give your parched skin
a little bit of moisture, - Yes.
- particularly in these winter months.
- But I think your point about cosdna was good
'cause even sheet masks can contain
pore-clogging ingredients, so double check.
- And they're sitting on your skin for 15, 20, 30 minutes,
so you know, that's enough time to get in there
and cause trouble, so yeah.
You wanna use a good mask that's not gonna--
you know, we want it to do good things,
not bad things.
So we have Rachael who's awesome right now,
and she is gonna show you how it looks
when you have done your own
homemade sheet mask, okay?
Here she is, here she is.
Looking a little post-surgical,
but none-the-less, awesome results.
So she looks great.
She made this herself.
Now how did-- Rachael, how did you do this?
We've used these little dry--
they're almost like little cotton pads.
- These are the Salina multi-wear cotton puffs from Amazon.
- Excellent.
Probably a good price point. - And they're essentially
just the sheet mask material, but dry.
- Yeah.
- And then I used the Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion, light,
and you just-- - Say that 10 times.
- I use the regular one at home
but this is like a nice, lighter option.
- Good, how does it feel?
- It feels fantastic. - Yeah.
- You look fantastic too. - Do I look fantastic too?
- You look super great again,
scaring the bejeezus out of your partner.
- Slap 'em on. - Mm-hmm.
- Good to go. - Good to go, see?
- And just add wine.
- And just add wine.
- (giggling) Perfect.
Okay, our next handy-dandy model is Justin,
come on down. - Justin, who is actually
using-- let's see.
He's got the Collagen Essence Mask.
We love these sheet masks you can find on Amazon.
Very affordable. Look at him.
- Justin's looking - Also--
pretty good right now. - another way
to scare your fellow humans. - Yes.
- But I think he looks great,
he's getting a nice boost of collagen essence there,
- Yes. - and moisturizing.
Does it feel nice? - It feels great.
- Good, what a trooper. - Yes.
- That's awesome.
Loving this.
And let's see.
We can also show you, which--
Alyssa, which mask are you using?
- [Alyssa] I have the Clarins.
I don't know where-- - Oh, the Origins.
- Origins! - Yeah, I think--
- I think you did this one, didn't you?
- Or did you do this one?
- Oh, she did the Origins.
It's actually a clay mask.
We don't really have the little thing any more,
but just a little--
one of those little guys.
Look how beautiful she looks.
Rockin' it. - Hey guys!
- And any clay mask is gonna kinda pull
all that kinda dead stuff
out a little bit. - It's a little,
a little tight. - How do you--
how do you feel?
- It's tight. - It's tight?
- I just-- - But that's how
it should feel. - Yeah, yeah.
It's gonna be great.
- All right, good. (giggles)
- If your skin tends to be--
good point with that.
If your skin tends to be a little sensitive,
just decrease the time that you'll leave it
on your face. - Right.
- We just had that happen a little bit before
the camera started rolling
with miss Emily. - Yes (laughs).
- So if it starts to burn - This is why we had
- right away, - to change.
- take it off of your face. - Yes, anything starts to burn
right away, - Switch to something
- more gentle. - Take it off your face.
So that's why we switched her to a nice gentle one,
which is great. - Wasn't somebody asking
clarification on the what the website
you mentioned was? - Oh, yes.
CosDNA?
cosdna.com
Yeah, and we love this. - We do, it's one of
our favorites.
- We pretty much-- it's like,
what did we decide, our third favorite?
- I think it's like-- yeah.
- Hmm, Sephora... - Maybe behind Amazon...
- Amazon... - Sephora...
- cosdna? - Yes.
- There we go.
- We'll put cosdna there.
- And it's great.
You can run-- I mean,
make-up, skincare products, shampoo,
I mean, anything you are putting on your body
you can essentially grab the ingredients list.
This is how we like to do it.
We go get the ingredients list
preferably off the manufacturer's website
just so we know it's really accurate,
but if not them, Sephora,
Amazon, Ulta,
you can pull the ingredient list
from almost any product off of there.
Go into cosdna.com,
pull up the where you pop in the ingredients,
click on analysis,
and it tells you in the acne column
and in the irritant column
if these are likely to be a problem for you.
Usually we say to avoid anything that has
a number in the acne column or the irritant column
that's a three, four, or five.
These are generally--
means that they're gonna be pore clogging
and we don't, we don't,
we don't like 'em. - No.
We say stay away. - Stay away.
- Excellent.
So, you know, really in general too,
a nice thing that I like to do at home
is before I use my micellar water
and then I maybe do a little bit of a cleanser
if I am feeling like I had a lot of makeup on that day,
before I put my mask on,
sometimes I will use a--
and how are we gonna say this?
- Konjac. - Konjac sponge.
- (giggling) - We actually,
because a lot of us say cognac or konjac,
we actually looked up the proper pronunciation of this
and it's some hybrid of that. - Yes.
It's sounds a lot like Kon-jac.
(laughs) So that's how we will say it.
- Yes, until you use one of these little sponges
we like the natural ones.
This is just...
I mean they're really inexpensive on Amazon,
these little sponges.
And they're really super gentle,
and they just kinda very gently exfoliate,
and then you put on a nice particular--
if you're gonna do a hydrating mask
and it kinda gets in there,
which is really--
which is really awesome. - They're not gonna
feel gentle though, when you pull 'em right out
of the package, because they're dehydrated.
You gotta add water,
get 'em nice and soft,
and then use them, yeah. - That's true.
They feel kind of like something you scrub a pan with
when I first take it out
of the package. - Ouch.
- Yeah, ouch. So, yeah,
lotsa water, get 'em all--
they kinda get a little gooey then,
so don't be put off by that either.
They get a little gooey
and then you just squeeze the water
and then just, you know,
gently circle, circle, circles.
So, you know, masks can be a really great thing to do,
but the thing--
did I do that circle, circle, circles?
(laughing)
- This is the general motion that you wanna use.
- (laughs) I'm sorry.
That should've been a joint version.
(crosstalk)
There would be commentary back here,
I'd say so.
There's also--
and Laura and I think mentioned this before,
but this is a pure retinol express smoothing eye mask,
so these little babies go right under your eyes
and give you a nice little mask
to that area.
'Cause the skin right here (missing audio)
you know, it deserves a mask too.
- It does. And it's a good alternative
I think to--
with, if you don't wanna scare people,
like Justin and Emily perhaps did?
- (laughing)
- It's a tiny little piece of (unclear)
right underneath your eyes.
It feels the same
but is less scary. - Yeah.
- Especially if you have small children at home.
- Small children, dip.
But the husband (missing audio)
wanted to bring--
I almost did this one today.
The Mint Julep, we love this.
This is the Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask
and it's great for oily and acne prone skin
because it really is kinda detoxifying, inexpensive.
You can find this on Amazon, you know,
really inexpensively. - Like four, five dollars
maybe. - Yeah.
- And this is good for--
we've got a lot of questions on (missing audio)
the size of my pores,
and unfortunately we can't, sad face.
- But... - Meh.
- Yeah, just keep drinking wine
and your pores will look smaller...
(laughing) (missing audio)
- Awesome.
And the thing...
One thing we will mention though for acne prone skin
is that if you have a lot of inflamed acne going on,
masks may not be the best thing for you right now.
So certainly if your skin
is just feeling a little dehydrated,
or you're feeling some clogged pores in there,
but you don't have a lot of active inflamed acne going on,
go for the mask, give it a try.
Any burning, take it off right away
like Emily did.
That was a good call.
- It's a learning experience.
- A good learning experience.
But if you've got a lot of inflamed acne, hold off.
Wouldn't you say so?
- Yes. I'm gonna take
a sip of wine. - I think we should take
a sip of wine. - Mm-hmm.
I think I might need to get this off my face.
- I think so too, mine's feeling quite tight.
So we're gonna wrap it up today
and just leave you with hey,
go try some new masks,
let (missing audio)
and some new ones for you,
and we'll see you next week on Facebook Live.
