Waching daily Mar 27 2017

Hold me close 'til I get up

Time is barely on our side

I don't wanna waste what's left

The storms we chase are leading us

And love is all we'll ever trust, yeah

No, I don't wanna waste what's left

And on and on we'll go

Through the wastelands, through the highways

To my shadows, through the sunrays

And on and on we'll go

Through the wastelands, through the highways

And on and on we'll go

On we'll go

Finding life along the way

Melodies we haven't played

No, I don't want no rest

Echoin around these walls Fighting to create a song I don't wanna miss a beat

And on and on we'll go Through the wastelands, through the highways To my shadows, through the sunrays And on and on we'll go Through the wastelands, through the highways And on and on we'll go

And we'll grow in number Fueled by thunder, see the horizon Turn us to thousands And we'll grow in number

Fueld by thunder, see the horizon Turn us to thousands And on and on we'll go

Through the wastelands, through the highways To my shadows, through the sunrays And on and on we'll go Through the wastelands, through the highways And on and on we'll go

RCMP Officer for the Day - Runner up - Duration: 0:43.

I would like to be an RCMP officer for the day because…

I would like to ride in the car and press all of the buttons

especially the red ones.

I wonder what the red ones even do.

Do they make a "we ooo" sound?

I would feel really happy if I get to go out with an RCMP officer

because you never know what you're going to do.

What if you get to go on a horse?

I would love to ride on a horse.

I am actually allergic to horses.

I would love to see their office.

Do they have a pet dog?

I wonder if they do.

Sincerely, Future Officer Nyah

For Gideon, Infection With a Common Virus Caused Rare Birth Defects - Duration: 9:43.

For Gideon, Infection With a Common Virus Caused Rare Birth Defects

When Kathleen Muldoon had her second child everything was going smoothly. The delivery was short, the babys APGAR score was good and he was a healthy weight. Everyone said he was amazing, says Muldoon.

But when a doctor noticed that Gideon was jaundiced, everything changed. Nurses put him under a fluorescent light to treat the problem. But it didnt work. Instead, he developed a red rash all over his body.

Blood work indicated newborn Gideon was infected with a virus Muldoon had never heard of: Cytomegalovirus or CMV – a virus that can cause severe birth defects.

Muldoon, 40 of Peoria, Ariz. , remembers the pediatrician coming in to deliver the bad news. He couldnt even make eye contact, she says.

Gideon was diagnosed with extensive brain damage, spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, visual impairment, epilepsy and microcephaly – thats the neurological condition also caused by the Zika virus, where the babys head is abnormally small.

Gideon spent the first four weeks of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit. Gideons case is unusually severe. Every year about 40,000 babies are born in the U.S. infected with CMV. Most wont have any symptoms.

But one in five will have CMV-related problems, like hearing loss, cognitive delay or neurological problems like Gideon. Cytomegalovirus Is Everywhere.

Like cold and flu viruses, CMV is transmitted from person to person. It travels in bodily fluids like blood, urine and saliva. It is extremely common, according to Dr. Joseph Bocchini, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Louisiana State University.

Cytomegalovirus is everywhere, he says. It is hard to avoid. By middle age, more than half of adults are infected. By age 5, nearly 1 in 3 children have it.

They pick it up from kissing or touching someone or something, like a door handle, table or toy thats been contaminated. The virus can live on these objects for hours.

Once youve been infected with CMV, the virus stays with you for life.

For most people, CMV isnt a problem. It rarely causes symptoms and if it does theyre pretty mild, similar to a cold, says Dr.Brenna Hughes, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University School of Medicine.

CMV usually just causes sniffles and possibly a low grade fever, she says.

However, CMV infection can cause serious health problems for people with weakened immune systems, such as individuals with HIV or those who have an organ transplant. And it can be a big problem for pregnant women.

Timing Can Make All The Difference.

CMV can pass through the placenta to the fetus, but that doesnt happen very often. If a woman was infected with CMV before getting pregnant, theres a less than 1 percent chance shell pass the infection on to her fetus.

And even if the baby is infected with CMV, the majority dont have any symptoms. But timing can make all the difference, says Hughes.

If a woman gets infected for the very first time when shes pregnant, the virus is more dangerous probably because theres more virus and less of an immune response already present in the mother, says infectious disease specialist Bocchini.

About 10 percent of these babies will likely have CMV-related problems and about 3 percent of them will be severely affected like Gideon.

The stage of pregnancy when first infected also makes a difference. If the mothers in her first trimester, when organs like the brain are developing, the consequences can be devastating. Doctors told Muldoon she was likely infected during her first trimester.

Today, Gideon is 3 years old. He uses a wheelchair, cant see well or speak, but he loves sounds and music.

He giggles loudly when he hears his mother sing. But Muldoon is worried that even his precious hearing may be in jeopardy.

CMV can cause hearing loss three to five years after the initial infection, and Gideon is starting to show some hearing loss in his left ear. I Had Never Heard Of This Virus.

When Muldoon reflects on her pregnancy, she is astonished that she didnt know anything about CMV before she had Gideon, especially since shes an anthropologist who teaches anatomy to medical students at Arizonas Midwestern University.

And yet I had never heard of this virus, she says. Muldoons not alone.

A survey from the National CMV Foundation found only 9 percent of women knew about the virus and a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found fewer than half of OB-GYNs discuss CMV with their patients.

Hughes, who is also a spokesperson for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG,) says pregnant women are generally told the best way to avoid infection is careful hand washing, and to avoid interacting with sick people.

Until 2015 ACOG recommended more aggressive prevention efforts, especially for women who are around toddlers, who can be hot zones for viral transmission with all their dribbling and drooling.

They recommended pregnant women wash their hands every single time after they handle a childs toy or laundry and not to kiss a child on the face where contaminated saliva might be present.

These suggestions were scrapped when no conclusive evidence was found that they actually prevent infection, says Hughes.

Theres currently a debate in the medical community about whether to screen all newborns for CMV. Many doctors are skeptical, since there is no proven treatment.

One study suggests antiviral medication in the first six months of life might decrease the risk of later hearing loss and cognitive decline.

This is a challenging virus, says Dr. Mobeen Rathore, an infectious disease specialist with the University of Florida. We need better diagnostic tools, better treatments and better ways to manage infection, he says.

Obstetrician Hughes agrees, and says further research and larger studies are needed.

She notes that Congress approved $1 billion to support Zika virus research and prevention, but CMV does not have a line item for funding in the annual budget — this, despite the fact that CMV is far more common in the U.S.

than Zika.

U.S. Initial hospital costs for gunshot wounds average 734.6 million dollars per year - Duration: 2:57.

U.S. Initial hospital costs for gunshot wounds average 734.6 million dollars per year

Gun violence resulted in initial hospitalization costs of more than 6.6 billion dollars in

the United States from 2006 through 2014, an average of 734.6 million dollars per year.

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine analyzed data from 267,265 patients

who were admitted for firearm-related injuries during the nine-year period and noted that

the 6.6 billion dollars figure is only a fraction of the total hospital costs incurred by gunshot

wounds.

"There is a high cost for these injuries, especially because they are preventable,"

said Sarabeth Spitzer, a medical student at Stanford and the lead author of a study published

online in the American Journal of Public Health.

The study included hospitalization costs of shooting injuries that were self-inflicted,

unintentional or due to assault.

The Stanford team used publicly available data in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, the

largest database in the United States, which houses information from about 8 million hospital

discharges each year, picked patients who were admitted for firearm-related injuries

and analyzed the severity of their wounds, the cost of their care, where they were hospitalized

and how they paid for the hospitalizations.

Among their findings were that the government bears about 40 percent of the total costs,

that patients were overwhelmingly male, and that there was a correlation between their

insurance status and how they sustained their injuries.

For example, shootings of young and poor individuals insured by Medicaid, a social health care

program for families and individuals with limited resources, comprised two-thirds of

firearm injuries, and they were most often victims of assault; in contrast, patients

insured by Medicare, a social insurance program administered by the U.S. federal government

for people aged 65 and older, were more likely to suffer from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The study captures costs for a very limited experience because the costs of firearm injuries

continue in many different ways, Spitzer was quoted as saying in a news release from Stanford

Medicine News Center.

"There's a cost if you're readmitted, there's long-term rehab, and a lot of these patients

end up needing long-term health care."

U.S. Embassy Belize Campaign- Be Bold For Change and Show Cyber Respect - Duration: 1:34.

I think it starts on a local level,

we need to make sure that our parents are passing along that

lesson of respect across the board,

particularly now to their children,

we need to speak to our children about this phenomenon of cyberbullying that has taken worldwide,

but more locally here in Belize.

On having them understand that there is no room for such activity,

for promoting this sort of behaviour,

in recent years really we have had that rise of instances of cyberbullying.

They can evolve into dangerous situations

of course, there is that element of embarrassment

that anyone would feel to have what you taught were maybe private and personal moments

exposed for the world to see,

it destructive really to a person I have seen it bring it people literally to their knees in terms of their feelings of self-worth,

in terms of how they feel about themselves

and how they feel that they are perceived by the general public after having being exposed by cyber violence and cyber bullying.

We rise and fall as one,

it is cliché to say but it is so very true and for us to tearing down ourselves,

puts us behind the eight ball in terms stunting the growth and development of our country.

The South Coast - Duration: 3:37.

Originally Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester,

and West Wareham were all one town

called Sippican. Sippican was the

name of the local Indian tribe and

that's the reason we have Sippican Harbor,

Sippican school, Sippican Historical

Society. The south coast is the hidden

gem of Massachusetts. It has the waters

of Cape Cod. t has the woods of New

Hampshire. It has the fields and farms of

the western part of the state. The other

unique thing about the South Coast is

you're within an hour distance from Boston,

half an hour distance to Providence.

Marion is a beautiful seaside town. Has a

small-town feeling. It's very historical.

It is just one of those towns that stays

with you no matter where you go in the

world. From the Historical Society which

is across the street from the general

store, you can walk down Main Street in

Marion, amongst many old houses, and then

find yourself on the grounds of the

Beverly Yacht Club. It is the absolute

center of sailing and Marion. It sits

right on Sippican Harbor which is

absolutely full of sailboats. This is

because so many of the people who live

in Marion love to sail. Marion's very

fortunate to have Tabor Academy. It

has provided all the people of Marion

with great resources. Tabor's sailing

program is unrivaled.

And while I was going there they said if you could just

graduate, you could go anywhere in the

country you wanted. It it's that fine of a school.

You know you're in Mattapoisett

when you see Salty. Salty the sea horse,

has always been a staple in the town. The

the kids love it. Mattapoisett is the sister town

to Marion. It has very similar

characteristics with beautiful beaches.

It's known for its Neds Point Lighthouse.

II has a small, quaint downtown area with

a few selected little shops. There's the YMCA

in Mattapoisett. They host activities

all summer. If you're an avid golfer, we have

two of the most prestigious golf courses

in the in the nation. Gooseberry Island,

that's a unique Island right opposite

the center of Mattapoisett. You can go

down there, take a walk - There's Eel Pond.

Rochester on the other hand is more

farm country. God's country, they call it.

Rochester is really an unique town. Most of the

lots would be classified as state lots.

Because they're over an acre.

All the homes are nicely situated on them.

But you're a mere 8 minutes away from the coast.

And you can certainly access the yacht club or the

pier at Mattapoisett or the boat yard at

Mattapoisett, or the boat yards in Marion.

We're missing all the excitement in Boston,

but they can have it.

Preparing to Run for Office: Scrub, Burnish Your Bio - Duration: 3:11.

Last week we talked about how to make and be news.

This week we'll talk about something that can make or break your campaign---your resume.

If you have never held public office, voters will judge your qualifications by what you

have done with your life, your achievements, your service to community.

Reporters will ask to see your resume, you'll be posting one on your website, passing it

around to campaign contributors and others whose support you need.

There is one other person who will be taking great interest in your biography.

Your opponent.

He or she will be looking for holes in your work history, embellishments, exaggerations,

and checking to make sure you really earned the degrees you say you did.

Which is why you need to scrub it---and make sure everything is dead on accurate.

If your bio is not clean, it will come back to haunt you, because when your opponent finds

a falsehood, they will make you eat it.

As you prepare your run for office, make that scrubbing your resume is one of the first

things you do.

Never claim degrees you didn't earn, accomplishments that are not your, or membership in organizations

you never served.

The second task is make sure that you burnish your resume, and include important accomplishments

that matter to voters.

Have you raised children?

Served in the military?

Managed a business, written a book or held an important position in a business or charitable

organization organization?

If so, what did you accomplish?

Have you ever volunteered to help with a charitable cause?

Been involved with a community group like the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, United

Way, or Rotary?

A civic organization or foundation?

A church?

Did you hold a leadership position?

Have you ever won any honors or awards for your professional volunteer work?

During your service to those groups, did ever feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, send

care packages to veterans, help people get health care, build homes, serve the poor or

register people to vote?

Have you ever helped advance a cause like securing more money for schools, helping children

learn to read, raising money for a library or better serving the elderly in your community?

If yes, be sure to include them.

If your entire life history includes none of these, look around your community for a

cause to serve and do it before your campaign gets underway so that you can include it on

your resume.

You will be asking voters to trust your judgment, and your commitment to the people you want

to serve.

It's up to you to prove that they can.

Next week, I'll be back with some thoughts about your clothes, and a delicious story

about a candidate for Judge who blew an election because of what he wore to a picnic.

If you are ready for an ever deeper, and faster dive into preparing for your journey,

I invite you to watch my free, 3-part video series on how to win an election.

You'll find the link highlighted on the screen, or right below the screen depending

on the device you are using to watch this video.
