Waching daily Mar 26 2017

Today we're making One Pan Peanut Butter Pasta.

In this pan.

If we were making it in a pot like that, I'd call it One Pot Peanut Butter Pasta.

But we're not, we're making it in a pan.

This is 8 ounces of linguini, half a package, that I've just broken in two.

And now I'm adding 3 and a half cups of water.

4 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of sesame oil.

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar.

So of course, the star ingredient is peanut butter.

I've eaten pretty much the entire jar, so I'm just going to put what's left in the

jar into this noodle dish.

I'm going to guess that's a little more than a tablespoon.

I just turned the heat on to about medium high, so when the pasta starts coming to a

boil you basically set the timer for 9 minutes and keep working at it with your chopsticks,

making sure that things don't get too sticky in there.

It's going to make the creamiest sauce, because basically the starch from the pasta ends up

in the water that it's cooking in.

And here's the finished product, I like to eat it straight out of the pan, put on some

scallions.

Sprinkle on some sesame seeds.

That's it - One Pan Peanut Butter Noodles.

How to Apply Macro Patience and Micro Speed - Duration: 3:59.

- [Bart] Hello. - Hey.

- [Bart] I'm Bart, I practiced my question so many times

that I lost my voice.

(audience laughter)

- That's amazing.

- [Bart] First of all, I would like to thank you because

I started my career as an entrepreneur by

trying to build the next Facebook.

But thanks to your speeches on self-awareness,

I came to realize that I lose sleep over borrowing

a hundred euros from my brother so I probably will

never build the next Facebook.

Having that in mind.

So, a year ago,

I started to build a data migration company, organically.

So, I landed a big customer, and now

I get paid every day, and I'm developing my stuff.

And we went live in production in Chile,

in December.

This year for the same company we will do

USA, Mexico and Canada.

So it's growing really great.

But my question to you was,

you talk a lot about patience,

but you also talk sometimes about speed.

And patience for me that would be

continue with the same--

- Can I answer you real fast and you'll

understand it forever?

- [Bart] Okay.

- Macro, patience. Micro, speed.

- [Bart] Yeah. Okay.

- And let me expand on it, 'cause that didn't work.

Fuck. (audience laughter)

No no, hold on, hold on, hold on, back back back.

Macro patience. You're a young man.

Building something meaningful, a relationship,

a business, it takes 10, 20, 30 years.

On your day-to-day work, you have to be fast.

With the clients, they email you, you email them back.

Like, your day-to-day.

But your vision?

What you want to achieve in life?

You're not going to build it in one year.

And so many people have it reversed.

In the day-to-day, they're slow,

and in the macro, they want their business to be huge

the next day.

So you need to reverse it.

- [Bart] So if you have to make the decision between,

in my case, building a better framework

or focusing on that, or trying to find more customers,

what would you advise?

Knowing that I don't need the money of new customers

right now.

- Both. - [Bart] Okay.

(audience laughter)

- And so here's another,

here's an answer of both:

Number one, how hard are you working?

I don't know.

If you're working 12 hours a day,

I feel like you could work 17 if you want! Right?

Number two, if you're working every hour,

and you can't work more,

with the money that's coming in,

too many young people and too many young businesses

when they start having money come in,

take it for themselves.

They want to buy a good watch.

They want to buy a good car.

They want to buy fancier shoes.

What I would do is, when my first money,

so here's my story.

This is not advice I'm giving just for fun.

This is my life.

I walked in my dad's store,

it did $3 million a year,

10 percent gross profit, $300,000 dollars in profit

before expenses,

we had no money, I was making $40,000 a year,

37,4, actually.

And I built that business from 3 to 45 million,

in the first kind of four or five years,

and five years later,

five years later this is doing $45 million dollars in sales,

and I'm making $40,000 dollars.

This is the advice I gave.

And by the way, I was in my twenties, and a guy.

The exact time, if you're making that kind of money,

that you want to use it to do guy things.

Right?

I put it back into the business,

I hired four more managers, six more managers,

seven more managers, I did more advertising.

I built a business.

So if this money's coming from Chile and U.S. and Mexico,

hire people.

Then you can do both.

- [Bart] Okay. Thanks.

- You're welcome.

"What is a Girl?" by Marlo Mack - Duration: 7:05.

Six years ago, I gave birth to my first and only child.

[SOUND] A boy.

>> Hello.

I am 38, I'm 29 and I really love you.

>> When he was two years old, my son began insisting on wearing only pink clothes,

preferably ones with lots of sparkles and ruffles on them.

>> She just is so pretty.

She really loves me, she really loves me.

>> When he turned three, he begged me to buy him some dresses and

let him grow his hair long.

That made the grandparents a little nervous, but we went with it.

>> That one's a fairy and that one's a princess.

>> Why is she a fairy and she's a princess?

>> because fairies have magic and princesses don't, that's the difference.

And also, they can't fly and they can.

So the flying princesses walk.

>> And then, one day, in a conversation that I kind of knew was coming, but

it still knocked the wind out of me >> My child told me that he was

actually a girl, not a boy.

He looked me in the eyes and told me something had gone wrong in my tummy

that made him come out as a boy, instead of a girl.

He wanted me to put him back.

He begged me to put him back.

To fix this mistake.

He was three years old.

[MUSIC]

I spent the following year resisting, trying to present alternatives.

I told my child over and over again that he could continue to be a boy and

play with all the Barbies he wanted.

And wear whatever he liked, dresses, skirts, all the sparkles money could buy.

But my child said no, absolutely not.

She was a girl.

What are your favorite things to play with?

>> My princess things.

>> Your princess things?

Why do you like princesses so much?

>> I just kind of do.

>> Do you think it's okay for boys to like princesses?

>> But I'm a girl.

>> After 12 long months of making both myself and

my child miserable, I finally let me little boy go.

>> Goodbye.

[MUSIC]

Hello, and now let's do it.

Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I- >> We switched to female pronouns and

told our family and friends that she was a girl now.

She wanted a new name, a girl name.

At first she picked rainbow.

I was relieved when she changed her mind and named herself after her aunt.

So now I have a girl.

>> Talk about princesses.

A daughter.

>> Actually I need to hear about how spaceships fly.

>> A really happy daughter.

>> [LAUGH]

>> I adore my daughter.

But sometimes I look at photos of my baby boy.

And I miss him so much.

This probably sounds crazy but sometimes I wonder where he is.

It's like he was a dream I had one night and

then morning came, and I woke up, and he was gone.

And now there's this little girl in his place,

telling me that the boy was just a dream, just someone I imagined.

As far as she is concerned, there never was a boy.

[MUSIC]

>> Can you explain that to me one more time?

What's the difference between you and Holly?

>> She has a vagina and I have a penis.

I'm a girl with a penis and she's a girl with a vagina.

>> You're a girl with a penis and she's a girl with a vagina?

>> Yeah, yes.

[MUSIC]

So now that I have a daughter instead of a son, what does this actually mean for her?

And for me as her mother?

>> Pink is a mama, pink is a mama.

>> Other than letting her wear pretty dresses, and

using different pronouns, what has actually changed?

What does this newly minted girl need to know?

What do I need to teach her about how to be a girl?

The girl alien does all the work while the boy alien sleeps and eats.

>> Do I even know how to be a girl?

[MUSIC]

>> Girls also have blue and purple spots.

>> And if a girl can be a senator or an astronaut or a plumber,

if a girl can wear pants and have short hair,

if a girl can even have a penis, what is a girl anyway?

>> Who gets to decide if you're a boy or girl?

>> Me.

Why is Social Support So Important for Transgender Individuals? - Duration: 3:47.

[MUSIC]

Social support from family, the community, and society in general, is one of the most

powerful non-medical interventions that can help a transgender person thrive.

>> Starting at home, I think it's family acceptance.

Any of us want to be loved and accepted by our family.

And so if you can't go have that be a safe space for something like this,

I think that is going to be a hard road to begin with.

>> I think social support is probably the best therapy that we can give out there.

Because, the whole reason why I got involved in this,

is when I learned that as a mom, the rate of suicide, and

depression, and substance abuse is three to four times higher than

other peers who are not transgender, or who are gender conforming.

So if you identify a child, and they come to you, I think

just allowing the child to feel safe, and accepted, that's what everybody wants.

And if that social support is there, then I think this rate of depression goes down,

the rate of suicide, anxiety, all of that can be decreased.

>> What we do know, is that for people whose gender does not align,

and who do not have the opportunity for acceptance and expression.

That the breaks of depression, drug abuse, and suicide are very high.

In other words, the personal costs to the person's self esteem,

and to their mental health is extremely high, and they have higher mortality.

So what we tell parents now is if you want to do anything for your child,

the number one thing that you can do for them is to accept them for

exactly who they are.

>> Some things we worry about, of course, are kids not doing well, being distressed,

stressed, depressed, anxious, and not being able to succeed.

>> On the further spectrum becoming suicidal.

We do know that there are higher suicidal rates in the transgender population, or

there can be, especially in youth.

Which is a vulnerable time for anyone.

So I think, again we need to pay attention, and

we also need to make sure that those children have all the support

that they need so they can flourish just like everybody else flourishes.

I mean I'm at Stanford.

The students make it here.

They're incredibly bright.

They've got all this future ahead of them.

They just need to be nurtured the way anybody else needs to be nurtured.

They have incredible possibility.

And I think most of them reach those possibilities, they graduate,

they get jobs, and they're doing well.

But some of them do struggle.

And when they do, we need to give them the support that they need.

We have to provide the services that they need to be able to live their life,

feel authentic, and be able to meet their expectations.

[MUSIC]

>> As a global community, we have a responsibility to work together to build

a world that is ready to support, and celebrate each and every child.

Regardless of their differences, and

focusing instead on what they have in common.

All children need to feel safe, loved, and

respected in order to reach their full potential in this world.

By establishing a strong foundation,

we can help our children build a stronger, and more stable future for all of us.

How is Transgender Classified in Medicine? - Duration: 4:05.

[MUSIC]

It seems like many of the issues that arise when gender identity

doesn't align with sex assigned at birth are problems of societal

acceptance rather than inherent problems in the transgender child.

So many people wonder whether a medical diagnosis is necessary at all.

>> Well, I think some of the controversy is, is this really a disorder, or

is it only a disorder because it's socially unacceptable to certain people?

And it's really the pressure of not being accepted as a person whose body looks one

way and feels differently.

So is that really a disorder or is that a societal problem?

I guess it's really when you think about it, that could be part of the issue.

>> But since transgender individuals may need to access ongoing medical care,

including, for example, access to cross sex hormones and

specialists care, at present,

a formal diagnosis is necessary to facilitate access to that medical care.

The question about what that diagnosis should be has

spurred many years of debate in the medical community.

>> Unfortunately, right now, with healthcare and getting things covered for

insurance.

If you go to a doctor for anything, you need to have some type of a diagnosis so

that the medical plan and the treatment plan gets covered by the insurance.

>> In the 1990s, the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual,

or the DSM, used by psychiatrists to make psychiatric diagnoses,

offered transgender children a diagnosis called gender identity disorder.

Many people in the transgender community took offense to this terminology

because it suggested that something was fundamentally wrong

with the very identity of a transgender individual.

In the next version of the DSM, the diagnosis was changed to gender dysphoria.

Terminology that shifted the focus from identity to the distress experienced

by many transgender individuals, which can arise from body discordance as

well as societal difficulties associated with the stigma of being transgender.

The term gender dysphoria has also been criticized by those who argue that there

are transgender individuals who don't feel distressed by their cross gender

identification, and so the search for an appropriate classification continues.

>> Even with dysphoria,

it makes it seem like there's something wrong with the person mentally.

So the next, I think, revision hopefully will also get rid of that

term dysphoria and may just be being transgender or gender nonconforming.

>> It's almost like we're using the diagnosis specifically

to access pieces of care that our gender affirming for your child.

And that's what I would want a parent to know.

[MUSIC]

>> Today, many people in our society, including medical professionals,

look back with shame and regret at the fact that until 1973,

gay people were labeled with a psychiatric diagnosis.

Perhaps in the future, we'll look back with similar regret at having used

a psychiatric diagnosis to characterize an entire group of children just because

their gender identity didn't match the sex they were assigned at birth.

As a general rule, personal injury settlements are not taxable.

Under some situations, a confidentiality clause may make the settlement taxable under the

What is the Difference Between Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation? - Duration: 4:14.

What's the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation?.

Another common question is how gender identity impacts sexual orientation.

Some people might wonder if a person is transgender,

does that also mean they're gay?

To help us understand the difference between gender identity and

sexual orientation.

Physicians who practice in this area reminds us that gender identity and

sexual orientation are independent characteristics

that also typically develop at different times in a person's life.

>> The formation of gender identity can start very early, this can be

one of the first real self identifying factors that a child might feel.

>> But transgender children usually have the internal experience of other

as transgender or gender nonconforming early in life.

>> People will tell you that knew when they were 4 years old,

they've heard as young as 18 months old, where they knew that,

their gender didn't match their assigned sex at birth.

>> One of the factors driving the confusion between gender identity and

sexual orientation is that in the English language, we often use a single

word sex to refer to both gender and sexuality.

Because of this, some people become confused and think that transgender

children are somehow expressing their sexuality at an early age.

When in fact they're just telling us who they are in their hearts and

in their minds.

Later on, as they start to grow older and grow into puberty,

these feelings of attraction to other people might start to form.

>> The sexual attraction usually doesn't start for

kids until maybe in the older elementary or

middle school where crushes may start in who they're attracted to.

And at that point, the attraction peace may come in.

But of course, they're much older when they really have the true sexual

attraction and their expression of their attraction.

>> Many children are able to express their gender identity by three or

four years of age and this sense of self grows along with the child.

Later in life typically around adolescence,

most people begin to experience feelings of attraction towards other human beings.

These can be directed towards those of the same gender,

the opposite gender, both or neither.

This is the time when a person begins to understand their sexual orientation.

So the term sexual orientation describes an individual's attraction to

others in the world around them, something that's quite different from their sense of

their own internal gender identity.

>> Sexual orientation can be just as fluid as gender identity in that

our attractions can be to male, female, somewhere in between or both.

Sometimes neither.

There's actually just as big of a spectrum on this end as there is for

gender identity.

>> Even thought the spectrum model has been proposed for understanding both

sexual orientation and gender identity, western society has struggled

to accept the concept of a continuum when it comes to these variables.

We tend to like to categorize things, maybe this is a way

of trying to make sense of things we don't feel we completely understand.

Yet many people would agree that knowing who you are, and

finding out who you're eventually going to love are both complicated and

deeply personal characteristics.

Some might say that it's exactly this complexity and

diversity that makes our society more beautiful.

"This is Real" - Duration: 5:23.

[MUSIC]

I wouldn't believe five years ago I'd be sitting in this seat

talking about this because I was a very different teacher.

Until this came to my attention I was pretty traditional,

we put things in boy boxes and girl boxes.

We lined the children up boy, girl.

We did graphs of boys and girls in the class.

And then, when all of a sudden, this wonderful student came along.

We had to rethink things that had been traditional activities that we did every

year in kindergarten, and really rework and look at things

in a whole new light, because we want each child to be their authentic self.

And so by labeling them, then they're not able to be their authentic self.

[MUSIC]

We grouped things in terms of color or we do animals.

So colors and animals in kindergarten worked really well.

Once we did that it just made everything smoother and

at that age they don't care about gender.

They look at each other as friends first and having similarities.

And the similarities are do you play in the sandbox or

do you like to run in the grass.

Do you climb in the play structure, or do you like to go build with things?

And so the more we've opened up our classroom to

the children's interests, the more interested and engaged they've become.

Traditionally, it seemed like the girls would play with the girls, and

the boys would play with the boys.

And over the past few years when we've had a much more gender neutral classroom,

I'm seeing everybody mixing together and playing together more so.

When we were trying to explain to children how people are born biologically

with a body, and we say you're born with a boy body or a girl body, but

you can have the heart and mind of boy or you can have the heart and mind of a girl.

And it doesn't matter what body parts you're born with and that that's okay.

In our perfectionist society I'm seeing more anxiety in children, and

when you let them be their authentic self and pursue what they really like doing,

it makes the whole classroom just more fun and more loving and more caring.

[MUSIC]

A lot of literature is gender neutral, but a lot isn't and so

there is some books that are no longer in our classroom,

just because we want to keep it as open and gender neutral as we can.

We really strive to have our, even little kindergarteners feel this

global sense of community and be aware of the world, and how we're all alike.

I think in kindergarten we open the door to learning and loving learning,

and friendships, and how to form relationships.

And this is just such a great opportunity to stop a lot of hatred and

sad things things that happen in our world.

I think the best part of education is how each year is different and

each year you as a teacher grow because you learn so much from your students.

It took a little bit of thinking and

still I'll catch myself because it's so ingrained, boy and girl, but

it's kind of fun and challenging to keep this ever present in my teaching and

in my interactions with the children, and what I bring into the the classroom.

I think it made me a better person, and I think it made

me aware of things that I have taken for granted my whole life.

It really humbled me,

I can't believe the journey that some people take to be their true selves.

Children and adults and adolescents that are dealing with this,

my heart goes out to them.

This is real and this is not their choice.

[MUSIC]

Hopefully, I can help people through this journey and

help people realize that this is not an easy thing for anyone.

But it's wonderful and it's loving to be able to accept everyone and

to help everyone become their authentic self and to support them along their way.

What is the Difference Between Sex Assigned at Birth and Gender Identity? - Duration: 4:37.

What's the difference between sex assigned at birth and gender?

Many people use the term sex and gender interchangeably, but

in fact theses are two separate characteristics.

At birth, a child is usually assigned a sex according to the body

parts with which that child is born.

Gender is a broader term that includes a person's internal sense of who they are,

that's called their gender identity.

And most children are aware of their gender identity pretty

early on in childhood.

The term gender also includes the way in which people express their identity,

by way of how they choose to dress and present themselves to others.

In any society ideas about what's considered acceptable gender

expression change over time.

In western society today, not many people would be shocked to see

a woman wearing pants or a man wearing an earring.

This probably wasn't the case 100 years ago.

As a society, we seem to be a little more accepting

of sex assigned girls, who also identify as girls, but

they prefer to dress and act in ways that are considered typically boyish.

Interestingly, our society is still less accepting of sex

assigned boys who identify as boys, but

choose to express themselves in ways that our society considers girlish.

Many children whose gender identity and their sex assigned at birth are aligned,

will choose to dress or act in ways that don't conform to traditional gender roles.

But even though we've become more comfortable with a more expansive view

of gender expression, the general understanding of gender identity

in our society has been that there only two choices, male or female.

And that they should match or

align with a child's sex assigned at birth, today that's changing.

More and more scientists, healthcare professionals, and

people in the general public are beginning to recognize that gender identity may

be better understood as the characteristic that exists across a spectrum,

like many other human characteristics.

And that gender identity and sex assigned at birth don't always align.

If we start to think about gender identity as a spectrum, and we remember that this

is a characteristic that's separate from a person's sex assigned at birth.

Then it begins to make sense that in some cases a person's gender identity, and

the label they're given at birth, might not be oriented in the same direction.

A child who's sex assigned at birth aligns with their gender identity,

which is the more common case scenario, is sometimes called cisgender.

When a child's sex assigned at birth doesn't align with their gender identity,

and this is the less common case, this is called transgender.

The prefixes cis and trans come from organic chemistry, where a cis

molecule is a molecule with two functional groups oriented in the same direction.

In a trans molecule, the functional groups are oriented away from one another.

Understanding gender identity as a characteristic that's separate

from a person's sex assigned at birth, and one that exists across a spectrum,

is a much more inclusive way of looking at the world around us.

It creates space for diversity, and

allows all of our children the chance to be celebrated and loved for

who they truly are, regardless of where they fall on the gender spectrum.

As a society, we try to protect human rights,

especially the rights of our children.

Imagine a world where all children have the right to be loved and accepted,

regardless of their gender identity, and whether or

not it aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.

You may not realize it but by watching this video,

you've already started to build that kind of a world.

Racist mail order bride Olga Brookman is on it again. - Duration: 0:54.

These are not Demons. They are African Americans.

Why did nature make such people like African Americans, Asians and Slavic people ?

My teacher told me in my school the land owners used Africans to do hard work because of their physical traits.

African curly hair and their black skin protect them from the sun. Their big wide nose helps them to breath during hot summer months. While their big lips help them to retain moisture. These traits make them excellent workers.

Asians have slanted eyes so they do not have to squint to avoid the sun and sand.

My question is why Slavic people are created to be so beautiful. Why do we have beautiful white skin, big eyes, normal hair and lips? Obviously we were not created to do hard labor.

I think we were made to sit in a restaurant like this one , to drink fine wine, eat good food and enjoy life.

This is why God created us Slavic people to be so beautiful !!!

What is a Non-Binary Gender Identity? - Duration: 4:30.

[MUSIC]

What does a non-binary mean?

Today, especially in western society,

most people still understand gender as a binary characteristic,

meaning a characteristic that has only two distinct options, male or female.

Throughout history, many non-western cultures have been more

comfortable and accepting of gender outside of the binary.

And many of these societies have long recognized more than two genders.

>> We know that for as long as we've had human culture,

we've had multiple instances of transgender identity.

We have the two-spirit tradition in a lot of Native American cultures, and

Hijra who are actually legally recognized as a third sex in India.

So this is not something new and

modern, this is something that has been going on for quite sometime.

>> More recently, in the Western world, teachers, scientists, and

medical professionals are also beginning to understand gender identity

as a characteristic that exists across a spectrum.

And with this shift we're beginning to gain a better understanding

of non-binary gender identities as well.

>> So then there's a host of names that's growing on a daily basis.

Some of them you might hear might be something like agender,

meaning they identify with no gender, or bigender, meaning they identify as both.

A common one that's coming up,

is gender fluid, meaning sometimes they feel a shift between the genders.

>> Like transgender individuals, people who identify as non-binary

have a gender identity that diverges from their sex assigned at birth.

But instead of identifying as male or female, their gender exists

outside of the two boxes that are narrowly defined by the standard binary.

Children who express a non-binary gender identity,

may not identify strongly as either male or female.

They may feel they identify as a blend of both or neither.

Non-binary individuals are often considered to be a subset of

the transgender community, but

many of them have unique needs beyond those of trans boys or trans girls.

One of these considerations is the importance of language.

In English, we use a lot of gendered terms, like brother or

sister, which could make a non-binary person uncomfortable,

because these words misrepresent their gender.

Instead, we could use non-gender terms like sibling or parent.

The concept of gender identity as a spectrum that goes beyond male and

female is sometimes harder for people to understand and accept.

We still live in a world where we learn early on

to categorize things as a way of understanding them.

>> What I would say is that for most of us, for the vast majority of people,

the sex we are assigned at birth and the hormones that we experience

through puberty matches very closely with our own gender identity.

And for most of us, this is not even something that's going to come to mind.

But for a small set of individuals, and this has happened for

as long as we have had a human culture, right, these individuals,

their gender identity, does not match with the sex assigned at birth.

Maybe because they identify as the opposite gender, but

sometimes because they identify somewhere along a gender spectrum.

>> By allowing our children to describe and

express themselves in ways that reflect their most authentic selves

instead of forcing them to fit in to two preexisting categories,

we may actually be creating an environment that's better setup

to celebrate the beautiful uniqueness of each and every child.
