Purifying and Drying Diethyl Ether For Grignard Reactions Using Potassium Hydroxide and Sodium - Duration: 7:56.

Warning: Diethyl ether is highly flammable.

Sodium is a reactive flammable metal.

Fire safety protocols must be in place.

Greetings fellow nerds.

In an upcoming video i'm going to be making grignard reagents and performing grignard reactions.

Now grignard reagents are notoriously sensitive to water, reactive impurities, as well as air.

So before we begin we need to dry and purify our solvent diethyl ether.

So here is our diethyl ether.

This particular batch has been recovered from multiple experiments

so it's full of impurities including water, organic peroxides, small amounts of alcohols, esters,

halogenated compounds, acids and so on.

In fact if you look at it very carefully you can see droplets of water in the bottom.

Let me see if can zoom in for you.

As you can see this is not good solvent and would certainly ruin our grignard reactions if we used it.

Now the first step in purifying it is to add in some potassium hydroxide.

I'm using about 30g for my 500mL.

This will absorb water and highly polar impurities like alcohol as well as react with any acids and neutralize them.

As you can see this ether is so impure that the reaction with potassium hydroxide is generating enough heat to boil it.

Now for the most part this shouldn't happen with most sources of ether.

Just mine happens to be grossly impure since it was recovered from other experiments.

Chances are very little will happen with your ether.

Anyway, let this sit for a few hours until stops bubbling.

Now we add in a stir bar and let the mixture stir overnight to remove most of the water and polar impurities.

This will also give it time to destroy the halogenated impurities as well.

You might be wondering if you can use sodium hydroxide,

you can certainly use it but i prefer potassium hydroxide because when it absorbs enough water

it actually phase separates out of the ether into a seperate layer.

You can actually see that layer if you look closely.

Sodium hydroxide also separates, but it forms a thick goo which doesn't stir very easily.

An easily stirred layer tends to work faster than a thick goo.

Anyway, I'm going to let this stir overnight.

I forgot to film it here but i also stoppered the flask with a glass stopper to prevent ether evaporation.

So here we are the next day.

You can see most of the impurities have been pulled out by the potassium hydroxide

and some of it has turned brown due to various condensation reactions initiated by the potassium hydroxide.

Good thing it's all separated into another layer.

We now simply decant our ether into a new container.

Now for some very easy grignard reactions, this ether is pure enough and dry enough as is.

But to improve reliability i'm going to go a step further and destroy the remaining impurities with sodium metal.

Just get about 10g of sodium metal and cut it up into small pieces.

Then add them directly to the ether.

You can see it start to bubble as the sodium reacts with any remaining water and impurities and generates hydrogen gas.

i'm going to loosely stopper the flask with a plastic stopper so the hydrogen can still squeeze out

and escape but keep most of the ether vapor in.

You might wondering why I didn't add sodium the first time around and went with potassium hydroxide at the beginning.

Two reasons actually, one is cost.

Potassium hydroxide is cheaper than sodium metal and for an amatuere chemist like me using less sodium is always preferable.

The second and bigger reason is safety.

This is a lot of water.

If this amount had reacted directly with the sodium then it would likely have exploded.

Ether is extremely flammable and igniting it with a sodium explosion would have likely started an ever bigger fireball of burning ether.

In the past, there have been cases of scientists being killed after being engulfed by fireballs of burning ether.

So to avoid that i removed most of the water first with potassium hydroxide before going on to using sodium to finish it off.

Anyway, i let this sit overnight to react.

Here we are the next day.

The bubbling has stopped and the sodium is becoming discolored as it starts destroying other impurities.

At this point to help it along i'm going to drop in a stir bar and let the mixture stir on my magnetic hotplate stirrer.

Looking back, there was no point in letting it sit until the bubbling stopped,

so you can just add the sodium metal and begin stirring right away unless it's boiling too much.

Anyway, i left mine stirring for another day.

And here we are the next day.

The flask has become cloudy as the sodium destroys more impurities causing them to precipitate out.

The stir bar knocking around the sodium is also chipping off whatever impurities reacted with the sodium and solidified.

I'm now going to replace the plastic stopper with a greased glass stopper and completely seal the flask from air.

We want it sealed now so air and moisture doesn't get in and waste the sodium before it has a chance to destroy the remaining impurities.

A plastic keck clip should be applied so on the off chance it's still bubbling

and the pressure does become great enough to pop off the stopper,

it won't go flying away and possibly smash something else of value.

Keep stirring it now for as long as needed to destroy all the impurities.

You might be wondering how to tell and for professional chemists they add in an indicator which is benzophenone.

Benzophenone reacts with sodium to form a green, blue, red or even purple solution

once all the water and reactive impurities are destroyed.

The color is dependent on the solvent.

Benzophenone in ether tends to form red or purplish colors.

Unfortunately for us amateur chemists getting benzophenone is not easy so we're going to need another indicator.

Interestingly enough we can use the sodium metal itself.

Right now it's all covered in sodium oxides, hydroxides and other impurities and everytime it gets hit by the stir bar some of these are knocked off.

The sodium metal then quickly reacts with more impurities and becomes covered again.

But once all the impurities are destroyed the sodium will no longer react.

After that point, rather than getting dirtier as time progresses, the sodium will actually get cleaner as it gets knocked around.

And then something fun happens.

And here we are after a week.

The sodium cleaned up to the point that it started cold welding together into this nice shiny sphere.

It's at this point that we can say all the reactive impurities have been destroyed.

If they hadn't then the sodium would quickly tarnish again.

Now we setup a simple distillation apparatus and gently distill off the diethyl ether.

Remember to use thoroughly dried apparatus so we don't reintroduce water contamination into our ether.

Now i know spending over a week to purify diethyl ether seems excessive but as said before this batch was highly contaminated.

Ether usually only takes a couple of days to purify.

By the way you might be wondering how this sodium sphere is so large, as I only started with a small amount of sodium.

I found out later that this sphere was hollow.

It was filled with ether as well as particles of the impurities that had been knocked off earlier.

Once i squeezed out all the ether the lump left over was much closer to the original quantity of sodium i used.

You may also be wondering why i didn't use my favourite drying agent, molecular sieves, and used sodium instead.

Molecular sieves only remove water, but all the reactive impurities are still there and would still kill our grignard reaction.

Sodium drying is still the best way to purify grossly impure diethyl ether.

Anyway, after all the ether is distilled we now have a batch of fresh, purified, and dried ether which is perfect for use in grignard reactions.

I'm going to use this right away, but if you're going to store it then i reccomend storing it over molecular sieves

or sodium metal to destroy any peroxides that may form or any moisture it absorbs from the air.

Anyway, as said before, I'll be using this for grignard reactions.

you need to keep holding the button (pressed)

Advice for Writing about Transgender Topics - Duration: 5:48.

Hey! My name is Gray, and welcome my channel. So, today I want to give you

three quick tips for writers who want to do transgender characters or storylines.

There are a lot of mistakes that can be made when doing this, so I just wanted to

give you some insight into what you might want to do, and what you might want

to avoid as well. So, tip number one is do your research. If you want to include a

transgender character or a transgender themed plotline, whatever... Do your

research. You don't want to be that person who spreads misinformation or who

uses incorrect terminology. Be aware of your language and if you can, just dive

into the trans community itself and get a better idea of the things we say, our

opinions on different matters, so that you can be as accurate as possible when

creating your character or your story. Tip number two is to avoid stereotypes

and the typical "trans narrative," and if you don't know what I mean by that, try

to avoid things like giving your character a name that is very very

similar to their birth name, or making a character who knew since the time they

were two and a half that they were trans. Avoid, you know, a super masculine trans

man or a very feminine trans woman. And of course, you don't have to do all of

these, but you might want to do a few of them, you know. You don't want to have,

let's say, a feminine trans woman who knew from the time that she was two, and

went from being, let's say, Lucas to Lucy. Stay away from doing all of those types

of things because, again, that's a version of

spreading kind of a false idea of what trans people are. And my final tip is to

talk to trans people, and that kind of goes along with doing your research, but

even if you don't do it before writing, make sure you do it after writing. It's

so so important that when we have representation, the representation is

accurate. We're all kind of fighting for representation, but it's not gonna be

worth anything if the representation we get is not accurate and not really

representing who we are, if that makes sense. And just to give you some starting

points to either creating your character or creating your storyline, some myths,

I guess, about being trans... Number one : We don't always think about being trans. I

had someone message me and asked, "You know, as a trans person, what's the first

thing you think when you wake up in the morning?" I don't wake up in the morning

thinking about being trans. I wake up in the morning thinking about either, you

know, what dreams I had in the night, but usually I can't remember them, or my

plans for the day, or what I'm gonna eat for breakfast, or "God, I just want to go

back to bed," you know? I don't wake up thinking, "God, I hate my body," or, "God, I

can't wait to get top surgery." I mean, sometimes I do, but that's not the first

thing I think of. That's not on the forefront of my mind at all times.

Another thing: We're not all white. We're not all able-bodied. We're not all... We

don't all fit into gender roles perfectly. We're not all straight. We're

not all... I hope you get what I'm saying. We're not just trans. Usually, we have

other aspects to who we are, and it's important to represent that, so consider

maybe having a trans person of color, or a non-binary person,

or a trans person who also has a disability, or is an immigrant, or... Branch

out a little bit, and yes, that will increase the amount of research you have

to do, and the amount of fact-checking, and the amount of feedback you need to

get, but it will also increase kind of your credibility as a writer and the

validity of your representation and writing. Transitioning is not an

overnight thing. Your story, if it is about transition, will need to occur over

years, and it's a very slow process. A lot of being trans is waiting, and another

thing, just generally, trans people don't want to be something else. They want

other people to see them for who they are inside. It's not, when they transition,

when we transition, it's not that we're becoming someone else. It's that we are

getting people to realize who we have always been. So, these are just like a few

starting points to give you a few myths that I think can end any time. Hopefully,

Licorice root outperforms anti-viral meds for cold sores Teenage girl is finally cured

after trying every conventional treatment

A 18-year-old girl who had cold sores since she was five said that the only treatment

that effectively worked to manage her sores is a licorice balm.

Indigo Faulkner tried a lot of topical treatments and even anti-viral medications prescribed

by her doctor to treat her cold sores, but all of these failed.

She had suffered from an outbreak of painful, fluid-filled, blister-like sores on her lips

every six to eight weeks, which consequently lowered her self-esteem, made her feel anxious,

and antisocial.

The effectiveness of licorice is proven by science.

In fact, researchers from Hamadan University of Medical Science in Iran found that licorice

root can weaken the cold sore virus which lies dormant in the skin between outbreaks.

In the study, they assessed the effects of licorice root on a virus called Herpes Simplex

Virus 1 (HSV-1), which causes cold sores.

The virus stays in the skin forever, which is why cold sores come back.

Cold sores begin to heal within 10 days.

However, they may spread and be irritating or painful during the healing process.

Moreover, cold sores are contagious, especially when the blisters burst.

Thus, close direct contact must be avoided.

Signs and symptoms of a cold sore include blisters on the tongue or mouth, mouth or

tongue pain, lip swelling, possible swallowing difficulties, sore throat, swollen glands,

high body temperature, dehydration, nausea, and headaches.

The research team aimed to determine the efficacy and the effect of of the licorice root extract

treatment on Vero cells infected with HSV-1.

They incubated the Vero cells after administering different concentrations of aqueous extracts

of licorice.

Then, they incubated the cells during different time courses.

Moreover, they performed cytotoxicity assay to determine the 50 percent tissue culture

infectious dose, as well as incubated HSV-1 with licorice root extract before the viral

infection.

The findings of the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, revealed

that the effectiveness of the licorice root extract differs, depending on the incubation

period and pre-treatment of cells.

In conclusion, the findings suggest that licorice root extract can be used as an anti-viral

medication.

Other health benefits of licorice root Licorice refers to the root of the plant Glycyrrhiza

glabra, which is native to Europe and Asia.

DIY How to make a wooden motorcycle jack / lift for 20$ - Duration: 6:59.

Hello, I'm David.

Today I'm going to give you complete tutorial on how to build your own motorcycle jack.

You will need tools like:

1) blade or saw for cutting wood,

I used side for cutting metal because it is more precise for me.

2) measure tape,

3) clamp,

4) drill-driver or driller,

4) 3mm wood drill-bit,

cross head bit,

about 110 wood screws,

which are 4mm in diameter and 50mm long,

and 32 steel flat washers for M5 bolts.

5) transport strap,

6) and of course scissor jack.

Last but not least you will need materials to build from. I used:

1) plank - 20mm thick and 140mm wide,

2) square timber - 40mm by 40mm,

3) timber - 19mm thick and 60mm wide,

I could not buy 20mm thick so I've chosen closest available one.

Before you start cutting anything you need to measure some things.

Basically you need to measure distance from ground to motorcycle lifting point,

while motorcycle is in vertical position.

Also you need to decide how long and wide your jack should be to fit your motorcycle.

The more it will be wide and long the more it will be stable.

In my case I measured 24cm (not 23!) from ground to lifting point.

You should leave some free space to insert the jack under the motorcycle. I left 1 cm of free space.

To calculate the height of the linear guides you also need to remember, that your top and bottom plates have some height.

As you see my linear guides should have 19cm as my jack plates are 2cm high.

Here you can see 3D model.

Basically there are 2 plates, 4 linear guides and couple of links between elements.

The most important parts are linear guides and here you can see how it works.

The part of the linear guide connected to the bottom plate is made from 4 timbers,

which are 19mm thick and 60mm wide. Length is equal to 19cm according to previous calculations.

Second part of linear guide is connected to the top plate.

This part is made from 40mm square timber and it's length is equal to 19cm as previous part.

The bottom plate is made from 2 planks which are 20mm thick and one 140mm wide. Length is 35cm.

These planks are connected by 2 small timbers which I also used for making linear guides.

There is one big link made from plank, which I used for the bottom plate.

The Top plate is made in the similar way as the bottom plate.

Here you can see all pieces of wood I used, and total length of each type.

Making of linear guides requires some precision during cutting.

It is good to draw lines on 3 sides first and make shallow pre cuts on those sides.

So it will provide better guiding for the saw during the final cut.

To provide same length for all elements it is good idea to use first one as template for the others.

You can check quality of cuts by putting parts on flat surface.

Here you can see ready elements for one linear guide.

Before drilling it is good idea to secure parts from moving.

I drilled one hole at the top, and one at the bottom of the guide for each side.

I used steel flat washers between elements to keep some space for moving parts.

Here you can see another example of using transport straps before drilling.

To make each plate I used 10 screws to connect planks to the big link.

If you use too long screws, you can always cut them off from the back side

You need to be precise during mounting of the linear guide to the bottom plate.

You should drill at right angle and try to hit the center of the timber forming outer layer of the guide.

I used 4 screws for one guide.

For small links use bar clamp during drilling.

I used 2 screws per one small link.

To mount top plate to linear guides it is the best to first finish assembling the bottom part.

Then you can insert inner parts of liner guides and cover them by top plate.

Next you can easy drill central holes in top plate and inner parts of guides at once.

After that you can take off the top plate and check positions of the holes.

If everything is OK you can place the screws and drill additional holes.

At the end plate should look like this one in the photo.

To secure the base of scissor jack you can put some additional screws in pattern like this one.

You can do the same for the top of the jack.

When using this jack you should keep your motorcycle as low as possible.

The more you lift the motorcycle, the less stable the jack will be.
