Waching daily Jan 30 2018

Hi, everyone.

It's Bill at BillBenoist.com.

I have a question for you.

What do you believe makes a good leader?

In this video, I'm going to share with you what 75,000 individuals across the globe have

said to this question, so stay tuned.

When I decided to go back to school and get my master's degree, I was debating as to whether

I wanted to do an MBA program or if I wanted to get my master's in management, and ultimately

what I selected was a master's in leadership.

The reason why I selected leadership was, number one, it was a very cutting edge program.

There wasn't a lot of schools out there that were offering degrees in leadership, but more

so I was really kind of fascinated with the subject.

I was always leading management and leadership books, and I always kind of wondered what

it was that gave the privilege to those authors that called themselves subject matter experts

on leadership.

I had taken leadership classes in undergraduate program for my management degree, and these

were all what I would say Leadership 101 classes.

I was curious what was being taught in Leadership 201.

I remember the first class in the leadership program, the first question that was asked,

what is it that makes a good leader?

I think there was probably just as many answers to that question as there were students in

the class, but there is actually a consensus out there as to what makes a good leader.

That consensus was founded by these two academics, a guy named Jim Kouzes and another one named

Barry Posner.

Now, Kouzes and Posner, they wrote a book called The Leadership Challenge, and if you

get a change, definitely read this book.

It's fascinating.

But what Kouzes and Posner did is they surveyed some 75,000 business and government executives

across the globe, not just the U.S. but across the globe, and what they asked as an open-ended

question, what do you believe are the most admirable traits and values of a leader?

What they came back with was 255 characteristics.

It's just almost like what I was saying with the class that I took, just as many answers.

255 different characteristics as to what individuals were what they saw as admirable characteristics

and values in a leader.

However, upon close analysis they were actually able to take those 255 and combine them down

to 20.

Now they have 20 top characteristics.

Still quite a bit, but what I want to share with you is what the top four were.

The top four characteristics and values that most people, the vast majority of individuals

believe they want to see in a leader.

Number one, honesty.

Number two, forward thinking.

Number three, competent in what they do, and number four, inspirational.

This is what's really cool about that study.

20 years later, Kouzes and Posner did the same thing again, and guess what?

The same results were repeated.

The same top four came out on top of everything else.

Honesty, forward thinking, competency, inspirational.

So, if you're someone who wants to be a leader, if you're honest, if you're forward thinking,

if you're competent, if you're inspirational to your team, is that going to make you a

good leader?

According to 75,000 individuals, yes, it probably would.

But do you know what I believe would make you a good leader right now?

Reading books like The Leadership Challenge.

Back when I was in corporate America, there was something that myself and three other

managers did.

We would get on the phone every Wednesday at lunch time and talk about a leadership

book that we were reading.

We did this for over ten years.

We would select a book, we would agree upon the number of chapters or the number of pages

we would be reading in a week, and then on Wednesday at 12:00 noon, we all got on the

phone for an hour and we talked about what we learned in that book.

We did this for I believe over ten years.

We've all became better leaders for doing that.

See, if you want to become a better leader, yeah, you need to be honest, you need to be

forward thinking, you need to be competent in what you're doing, you need to be inspirational

on your team, and ways to do that is to start reading books and learning how to do that.

In the notes below, I'm actually going to lost the top ten books.

I've read hundreds of them, but I'll list the top ten books that I think made the biggest

impression on me.

I hope you find those a great read, but also if you found this video informative and useful,

make sure that you subscribe to this channel as I do upload a career or leadership strategy

every Tuesday.

Thank you for stopping by, and I will see you in the next video.

What is The Intellectual Dark Web? - Duration: 6:23.

If you've been watching this show for a while, you know some of my favorite guests include

people who are firmly on the political left like Sam Harris, Bret Weinstein and Eric Weinstein,

some people on the political right such as Ben Shapiro, Dennis Prager and Larry Elder,

as well as some people who are hard to place on the conventional spectrum, such as Jordan

Peterson, Phil DeFranco and Brendan O'Neill.

Of course if you've been watching for a while you also know I think the Left Right paradigm

of politics is becoming increasingly meaningless and the new, more relevant spectrum is one

of personal freedom v. state power.

You are either for a society based on laws which treat individual people equally with

minimal involvement in their day to day lives, or you prefer a society which treats certain

groups differently based on immutable characteristics and thus the government plays a major role

in whether they succeed or fail.

The simplest way to say this is you're either for your own determination, or you want to

hand it off to someone else.

If I've changed on anything in the past few years, its that I consistently find myself

agreeing with the people who fight for individual choice over governmental authority.

If you watch cable news or really listen to any of the mainstream media, this conversation

about your ability to live your life as you see fit, which I believe to be the most important

conversation happening right now, is barely happening at all.

Actually, I believe almost nothing of real value is happening anywhere in mainstream

media . Cable news is force feeding you an endless back and forth by pundits who consistently

get everything wrong...rememeber Hillary's 99% chance of winning in 2016....while at

the same time they mask their opinions as facts and argue about the endless minutia

of a broken Washington DC instead of arming you with real knowledge and new ideas.

I don't know that there's anyone specifically to blame for this other than mainstream media

is based on an old dying model that is being replaced by new media and new technology so

quickly that its fualts are becoming glaringly obvious.

Fortunately, thanks to YouTube, podcasting and however else you get shows like this one,

the mainstream media's stranglehold on information, which is really a stranglehold on your ability

to think clearly about the issues of the day, is crumbling at an incredible rate.

Now the question is who and what will rise to replace it.

A few months ago, one of my favorite people to sit across this table from, Eric Weinstein,

came up with the phrase 'Intellectual Dark Web' to describe this eclectic mix of people

from Harris to Shapiro to Weinstein to Petersen, who are figuring out ways to have the important

and often dangerous conversations that are completely ignored by the mainstream.

It's why I would argue this collection of people are actually more influential at this

point than whatever collection of cable news pundits we could be compared to.

And it's not just those names I mentioned above, but people like Joe Rogan, who is absolutely

killing it on his podcast every week.

It's people like Christina Hoff Sommers who is fighting the intersectionality of third

wave feminism while still holding hope for feminism's original ambitions of equality

of opportunity.

It's people like James Damore and Lindsay Shepherd who are fighting for the true diversity

of ideas at Google and at Universities.

This wide tent of people we're talking about have tremendous political differences when

it comes to taxes, abortion, foreign policy and more, but we've all committed ourselves

to fighting for our ideas honestly and passionately, but more importantly we've committed to the

open exchange of ideas and not silencing our opponents, no matter how many times they refuse

to extend that same courtesy

to us.

We're getting a Mister Rogers biopic and Tom Hanks is the star - Duration: 4:14.

We're getting a Mister Rogers biopic and Tom Hanks is the star

Tom Hanks is stepping into the shoes of beloved American TV personality Mister Rogers for a new biopic.

The "Saving Private Ryan" actor will portray Fred Rogers in "You Are My Friend," which will chronicle the friendship between the late entertainer and journalist Tom Junod, who reluctantly agreed to write a profile piece on the star, only for the meeting to inspire a whole new perspective on life.

The movie will be directed by "Diary of a Teenage Girl" filmmaker Marielle Heller, from a script written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

"I'm thrilled to be making You Are My Friend," Heller shares in a statement to Variety.com.

"The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit.

As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life's work.

"I can't wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.

The biopic will be developed for TriStar Pictures, and company president Hannah Minghella is thrilled to have landed the project.

"This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite," she declares.

"We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at (production company) Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world.".

Rogers, the host of popular educational series "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," died in 2003, at the age of 74.

Hanks is no stranger to portraying real-life personalities – the 61-year-old is currently enjoying the success of Oscar-nominated film "The Post," in which he plays former Washington Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee.

He also recently tackled real-life characters in "Sully," "Saving Mr Banks," and "Captain Phillips.

How Do I Know if the Insurance Company is Being Fair? | Collins, Collins, & Ray, P.A. - Duration: 1:00.

How do I know if the insurance company is being fair with me and evaluating my insurance

claim?

The true answer is, you probably have no way of knowing that.

People often call us because they are involved in an accident and it enters them into a whole

bureaucratic area that they've never had any reason to know about.

We've handled many claims over many years successfully.

We know how insurance companies work.

We know that at the end of the day, many of them are some of the largest corporations

that exist; they're some of the oldest corporations that exist.

Old and wealthy corporations typically look out for their own bottom line.

Their interests are to protect that bottom line.

They have duties.

Every state law requires them to pay claims fairly.

Even so, people that have been injured in an accident, that are made to jump through

bureaucratic hurdles from insurance companies are often not treated fairly unless they get

qualified legal help.
