Waching daily Jan 26 2018

Cape Town may be the first city in the world to run out of water.

This could happen as soon as April 12th, a day that officials are calling

We're talking about Cape Town's 4 million residents losing running water to their homes.

What that means is when people turn their tap on, or their shower on, there is no water.

In order to advert day zero, officials are urging residents to use less than 23 gallons

of water per day.

To give you some context, the average American uses 100 gallons of water per person per day.

On February 1st, Cape Town's restrictions are set to become even more severe, going

from 23 gallons per person to 13.

The Western Cape Premiere called on residents to

and called on President Zuma to declare a national disaster.

So say day zero actually happens.

What we will have to do is then line up at public water dispensing points or collection

points and collect, in buckets or bottles, 25 liters per person per day.

This could lead to violence.

People could be fighting over and potentially stealing tap water.

So how did we get here?

Cape Town has been in a drought for 3 consecutive years, but the drought alone isn't to blame.

The city grew exponentially, and officials failed to account for projections of diminishing rainfall.

Once water restrictions were put in place, city officials failed to enforce them.

And around 60% of residents haven't been complying.

So what can other cities learn from Cape Town?

Don't treat a drought as as as the way you would have treated a drought 20 or 30 years ago.

Climate change isn't mainstreamed into decision making processes and city planning processes

across the board, which it really should be.

Ultimately, the crisis in Cape Town should only last 4 to 5 months -- assuming that the

winter bring rainfall.

But this is a cautionary tale, and one that we can't ignore.

If a city like Cape Town could face this challenge because it just wasn't prepared enough for

what climate change could throw its way, it could happen to most any other city.

What is in a scientific name? - Duration: 1:40.

Have you ever wondered why we have scientific names for animals?

One reason is because regional names can differ.

For example, what one person calls a crayfish others may call a crawfish, crawdad, or mountain lobster.

And they might all be referring to the same animal!

In order to avoid confusion, scientists call this animal by its scientific name:

Procambarus clarkii.

Scientific names allow researchers to have a common language.

No matter where you live or what language you speak, scientific names are universal.

Scientific names also hold a lot of information within them.

They tie that organism back to its species description and to its closest relatives.

These names are written in Latin and are made up of two parts: the genus name followed by

the specific epithet.

The person who writes the formal scientific description gets to pick its name.

I study shark tapeworms, and I named my first species, Calliobothrium schneiderae, in honor

of my high school biology teacher, Mrs. Schneider.

Scientific names convey information or characteristics about the organism.

Some researchers name the animal after someone significant to them.

Other times animals are named after celebrities.

In 2011, Australian researchers named a horse fly, Scaptia beyonceae, after Beyoncé.

There are now over 1 million species of animals with scientific names.

Each year hundreds of new species are discovered, and many are still waiting for their scientific name.

Who knows?

Maybe you will get to name a new species some day!

Is It Cost Effective Paying For A LinkedIn Careers Page? - Duration: 2:31.

Is it cost-effective paying for a LinkedIn careers page?

I was having this conversation with a client this week and whilst it's undoubtedly a massive

networking site, they love telling you at the drop of a hat how many members they've got (!)

There's definitely things you can be doing for free as a business

to attract talent that don't require you paying a large monthly sum.

If you've already committed to a careers page, or, you're thinking about getting one,

here's some things to consider:

Do the maths.

LinkedIn will charge you £1,000 per job slot,

you'll have to take a minimum of 5 over the course of a year,

and their silver careers package is about £12,000 a year.

That's just a basic package, you don't get the Recruiter Seat with that.

The first thing that I would do is separate out hires made from LinkedIn applications,

and hires made from LinkedIn searches.

I did it in my last business. The cost per hire for applications was about £12,000.

The cost per hire from searching on LinkedIn was £2,000.

By dropping the careers page and the job slots,

we looked to save £22,000 over the course of the year.

Don't believe everything you hear.

LinkedIn sends you a presentation as you near renewal and it will show you on one

of the slides how many employees changed their profile to working for your

business over the course of the year. It's kind of like they're trying to take

credit for making that hire. Make sure you go armed with your own statistics.

Know which employees came from which sources so you can get them to verify any claims.

Go premium!

A recruiter seat is an expensive investment. It's about £6,000

for 12 months and that's for one recruiter.

You can only use it on one PC.

The advertised benefits are it will show profile recommendations and you can

send targeted messages. In my opinion, it's nothing that you can't do with a

premium license and they cost you about £900 per head, per year.

You can just buy them on a company credit card.

If you're considering paying for LinkedIn, keep 3 things in mind:

(1) Know what your cost per hire is, (2) go armed with

your recruitment statistics so you know which marketing sources work best

and (3) look into premium licenses.

A well-managed, free, and basic company page,

promoted by your employees,

can be the most cost effective way of getting the most out of LinkedIn.

you can use less energy when the favor of God is your tailwind - Duration: 2:20.

not too long ago I was traveling to a conference that I was speaking to in

Europe and I had to fly from Chicago to Madrid and the pilot got on the intercom

system and he said I have good news for you today normally the flight across the

Atlantic is eight hours from Chicago O'Hare Airport to Barajas Madrid and he

said I have I have news for you we're gonna get to Madrid early probably about

45 minutes early and I thought wow that's nice

he says because we have a get it we have a tailwind and the tail wind is gonna

push us when you have a tailwind it means that you have a wind that's

blowing in the same direction that you're going

it means that you have to use left less effort and you get further with less

effort it means that you don't have to use as much fuel and you you push

forward it means that there's you're not fighting you're just flowing it means

that you're going faster than the effort that you're putting in it means you're

going further than what you're working at putting in that's when you have a

tailwind I look at the favor of God like that you still have to put in your

effort you just still have to but you but there's something about the favor of

God that pushes us forward and there's some times where God says no I'm gonna

give you a tailwind and there's other times where God's saying I'm gonna give

you a headwind against where you're going it's gonna take longer it's gonna

be harder because I want you to realize I want you to look to the heavens and I

want you to say God I need you I can't do it without you I need to put you at

the center of my life and what I do

What is PSD2? - Duration: 3:21.

Hi guys and welcome to another episode of bonkers.ie TV. This week we're

talking about PSD - what is it and what is it gonna mean for you and your bank.

As always, there's a long answer and a short answer in matters such as this.

The short answer is PSD2 - or the Payment Services Directive 2 - is new EU-wide

regulation, that came into effect earlier this month. What it means is, essentially

banks no longer will have monopoly on your data and will be required to grant

access to third parties at your discretion.

So, the '2' in 'PSD2' refers the fact that this is a revision of a directive that came into effect way back in 2007.

That directive was designed to create a single market in which to make payments in the EU.

In the intervening years technology has advanced

and the way that we pay for things is changing. So, PSD2 seeks to

level out the playing field to include all kinds of payment service providers

and not just traditional banks

if you're worried about the sound of third parties having access to your

banking data, don't because it'll always be at your discretion and PSD2 will

also ensure that enhanced security measures are put in place. the main

The main driving force behind PSD2 is increased innovation and enhanced security within EU banking.

This could be potentially great news for consumers but could also

be cause for concern for banks. Unless banks really start to think

outside of the box and come up with more innovative and consumer-centric options

for their customers, they run the risk of being left behind by more

technologically savvy third-party companies. We've already seen banks

experimenting and collaborating with different FinTech companies over the

last couple of months and years to bring new services to customers.

Think things like Apple Pay and Android Pay, and it'll be interesting to see which backs emerge

victorious on the other side of PSD2 in the coming months and years.

So, once again, the focus here is definitely going to be on innovation and enhanced security

and we've already seen the rollout of things like people using a contactless

technology to make payments, using the NFC chip in your phone to make payments

and really the sky's the limit of where companies can go with this kind of technology.

For instance, Ireland recently saw the rollout of the new FinTech

startup company called Curve, which offers customers the option to

consolidate all of their bank cards into just one, and then you can then switch

between banks on your phone to select the default payment method.

Here at bonkers.ie, we always advocate that more choice for consumers can only be a good thing

and it'll be interesting to see how PSD2 acts as a catalyst for change

in the banking sector. If you're looking for more details on PSD2, you can find

them all over on our blog in a much more detailed piece. If you have any questions

or comments, you can leave them down below or you can follow us on social media.

Thanks for watching!
