Okay.
Hey everybody! It's Dania AKA "Dose of Dania"
And today I wanted to talk about
a trend i've been seeing in television with women.
I am finally settled into my
new apartment and i got a chance to see friends and move some furniture around
and with down time comes binge watching time which is great!
And I am sorry not sorry
for doing it, but i had to catch up on all these shows I've been hearing so much about.
So on my list was HBO's 'Big Little Lies'
I finally finished up 'GIRLS'
I started the new season of 'Broad City'
I finished season two of 'Insecure'
And I finished the season 1 of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Oof! That's a lot.
BUT
after finishing all of those shows I noticed very interesting trends. It's kind of a
coincidence that all of these shows that I just finished are female centric and
their female characters are very strong so maybe that was a personal choice on
my behalf, but it definitely helped me with what I was seeing
The first show I finished binge watching was HBO's 'Big Little Lies'
Which is amazing if you have not seen it if anything you should just watch it for
the surf sound and the soundtrack and just the beautiful cinematography in
California. What we have here is a dramatic turn on 'Desperate Housewives'
meets 'Pretty Little Liars', but set in California with these high society
mothers and their kids going to this school and eventually a murder takes
place and it's a "Who Done It?" very exciting again you should watch I
don't want to spoil it. We have a very interesting cast of characters. We have
Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley. This character
set of women are very diverse and they each have their own set of
problems that they're dealing with again that's not something revolutionary that
we haven't seen in television before "Women with Problems",
but what is
different is that the set of problems these women have are actually very real
and almost too real to the point where you're watching this show and you're
saying oh "I know somebody like her", it's interesting one of these characters that
I dissected was Nicole Kidman's character and her husband is the very
dashing Alexander Skarsgård. If I were in the show I would totally envy the
heck out of these people. What we soon learned and *spoiler alert* sorry if you
haven't seen this is that Nicole Kidman is in a very abusive relationship
with her husband both emotionally and physically so this is also something
that we have seen in television before we have seen abusive relationships again
and again but what is different about this is that we see that Nicole Kidman's
character is addicted to this so normally we watch shows we watch
movies we even hear about this in real life
of someone we know in an abusive relationship and we think well "Why don't
they just get out? If it's so bad why don't they just leave?", and you know it's
not as easy as that sometimes so watching this and seeing Nicole's
reactions and that the more abusive the relationship is the more she craves it
and the more she goes back to this person whether it's love or lust and
it's very interesting but that is a very real scenario that hit home with me when
I saw it because I do know people that have experienced that and I think it's
very brave to show characters like that. They did an excellent job in 'Big Little
Lies' by showing that.
We have shows like 'GIRLS', 'Broad City' and 'Insecure' that
focus on the 20-somethings and the 30 some things that are making these very
questionable decisions in their lives and you're watching the show and you're
just thinking "When are these guys gonna get their shit together?!"
You know we'd all like to think that sometimes it happens maybe it happens the minute you
graduate college maybe it happens when you get your first job or maybe it
happens after you get fired from your fifth job you know there's really no
magic number of when you get your shit together
I think HBO's 'GIRLS' was the first show that I was exposed to that and seeing it
as a very real series instead of what were made to believe in New York life is
like for single women like 'Sex in the City' which was a very popular series
Let me tell you I live in New York right now and I do not have men following me
around in town cars and well I don't live in a brownstone. I'll tell you what did
happen to me was creep follow me two subway stops and a rat ran into my shoe
last month
So that is real that is New York
'Insecure' is probably the most recent show I just finished watching
I finished season two and I really am in love with it. I love Issa Rae I think
she is such a brilliant creator and I have so much respect for her because she
is involved in every single step of the way and from her success with her
YouTube videos to her HBO show to I heard she's doing a cooking show now
Issa call me if you need any help! Big, big fan and again this is another show I
started watching I wasn't sure if I liked it because I didn't think a lot
was going on. We have Issa who plays herself does not
have a luxurious apartment it is something you'd see if you were
probably working an above minimum wage job with your boyfriend which she is and
I can relate to that. What I notice the most in this show is that the
relationships we have these hero women characters and they have so much going
on looks, brains, talent and they just keep going with the wrong guys over and
over again! We don't go for the person that's right for us we don't go for
somebody that's so qualified and wants to make us happy we go for the
emotionally unavailable person and again watching that and that is kind of how we
are left off the second season is these two women making these poor poor choices but
who am I to judge? Because I have been in their shoes and I have made those same
choices myself! So I think that is why when I watch that show I just get all
kinds of worked up because I have been there and that is me
The last show I finished binge watching was 'The Handmaid's Tale'
Oof!
That is all kinds of creepy! If you haven't seen 'The Handmaid's Tale' basically it is what
would happen in a futuristic utopian society if all these single women were
just used to reproduce and make babies. Freaky. I did not sleep for a couple of
nights after watching that show. What is also disturbing about that show other than
the whole premise of single women being used for reproduction is the fact that
we are plagued again by this hero's tale we have our female character she is
faced with opposition and normally when our heroes are faced with opposition
they do something heroic and they win. Well that doesn't happen. Yes they're
heroic but sometimes life is very different. Obviously if you watch the
show you'll see what I mean by you know the opposition is so much bigger than
one person and we are not left with a happy ending actually we're barely left
with any ending at all we don't know what happens and that is the thing too
that life throws at you. Sometimes there is no ending but it's
just a continuum and we have to wait and see. So yeah, very unsatisfactory but very
real.
This is the video I want to make today about trends with female characters in
television making the wrong decisions or are they the right ones? We'll never know
but these female directors and producers are truth tellers and I am so excited to
see what the future holds and I am excited to see what other shows come up
that I relate to and who knows maybe you'll make a show maybe I'll make a show
More women in television. More strong characters. And More developed plot lines!
I am all about this so that's my two cents if you want me to talk about
anything else let me know and I'll catch you guys next time
See ya!
