Waching daily Sep 26 2017

One of the things that I think I find kind of most remarkable about what

modern physics has to tell us is the very nature of the elementary particles

that make up material substance. Stuff like water for example is made of

molecules H2O. We know that those hydrogen and oxygen atoms are made of

nuclei and electrons. We know the nuclei are in turn composed of protons and

neutrons. In the last 40 or 50 years we learned that protons and neutrons are

themselves not elementary particles - they're actually composites made of up

and down quarks and one of the really interesting aspects of this story, in a

sense, is first of all that the theories don't hang together at all, in

fact they don't even predict particles with mass unless we imagine that there

exists this rather mystical quantum field that spreads throughout space-time

called the Higgs field and the characteristic fluctuation of the Higgs

field is this thing called the Higgs Boson. We know from the discovery at CERN

in Geneva in 2012 that the Higgs Boson really does exist and the purpose of the

Higgs field is to give elementary particles their mass. That in itself

though doesn't explain quite what's going on with the mass of ordinary

substance. Take a proton, two up quarks and a down quark. If we add up the masses of

the individual quarks we get only 1% of the total mass of the proton. Where's the

rest of it? is a, you know, legitimate question and it turns out that we can

actually understand where the rest of that mass is gone - it's present in the

energy of the quantum field of the gluons that help bind the quarks

together inside the proton. Now Einstein's famous equation E=MC

squared was actually never given in his original

1905 paper in quite that form. In fact the equation that he gave was M (mass) is

equal to E divided by C squared. The mass of a body, an object, is a measure of its

energy content and that is the real revelation of Einstein's famous equation.

So the mass of everyone, all substance, is in fact to be found in the energy of

the quantum fields that hold matter together.

Wat is een lector? - Duration: 1:33.

I'm Talja, a second-year ABC student.

Today, I'm going to ask students

whether they know what a "lector" is.

A what?

A "lector"? - Yes.

No, not a clue. Sorry.

How do you spell it? L-E-C-T-O-R? -Yes.

No idea.

Maybe something to do with nature.

A leaking water supply.

Sounds like a teacher or a class taught by a teacher.

A "lector". Something involving ventilators?

Something to do with electricity?

"Lector"? Someone who gives lectures maybe? Sounds similar right?

As you can see, many students don't know exactly what a "lector" is.

Ben is a lector and we're going to ask him what his job involves.

A lector is a man or woman who makes a concrete link between professionals, organisations and Avans...

by doing practice-based research, together with students and lecturers.

In my case, digitisation.

Doing concrete project work, answering concrete questions from businesses.

Such as: how to deal with the internet or how to deal with drones.

What I enjoy most about researching digitisation...

is that students not only bring knowledge to the collaboration with me and businesses...

but also their fresh perspectives and views on digitisation.

That's the most exciting part.

Annet, you've collaborated with Ben.

Where's the advantage for students in collaborating with a lector?

The main advantage of collaborating with a lector is getting a lot of feedback on your research.

They're up to date on current developments in the field.

This makes for a great collaboration.

I hope this video was useful for you, it certainly was for me.

Is Online Church Real Church?: Clip from Podcas Clip from Podcast 228 | Social Media Church - Duration: 2:35.

You know i think, a lot of questions people have is, "Is online church really church? Is this a final

destination. Where are you driving people to? What is your philosophy? What is the church's philosophy on

what's the end point? What's the end goal?

You know that is a good question, and people ask me that all the time, i quote, i start online real church, it's like well.

Is community real community? And that's what we're pushing, right? So, if you live in

one of our, you know six kind of areas in Southwest Virginia or Tennessee,

we would love for you to get connected with a physical

campus.

But there are lots of people in our area. People in the world, who don't have that.

Right, and so my thought is a virtual community is a million times better, than no community.

Right, because we live in a really connected world, but that doesn't mean that we have

closeness, right?

There's not community, even if you're connected. So just because there are two billion people on Facebook,

that doesn't mean you're connected to anybody. And so what we want to offer

with HF online is, it's not a church

replacement, it is not a you know, don't go to a physical campus.

You know if you don't live in your highlands and we could be a next step for you, to get into a community,

And that's a win, right? Go and do it and serve and be there.

But there are lots of people who are far from God.

Who are upset about the church, who've been hurt by the church, right?

That's a real thing and going to a location seems like

overwhelming to them and that's a reality in anyone's area and so

on you know watching service online, is a lot less

you know daunting to somebody, and so if we can provide that for people

that's a win, right! So is online church the same thing as a physical campus, no! But is there legitimacy to that?

Definitely! Because i think there are plenty of steps at to win, becoming a

you know someone who is serving,

who's Involved in small groups, and not going to church, right! That's a big chasm.

That it's easy to forget about, like what people just should come to church, like well, yeah!

That would be awesome. But they're not.

So what can we do to help bridge that gap?

To help you know, another thing at highlands, it's all about helping people take their next step in

following Jesus. So for the online campus that's as easy as like, hey!, why don't you just sit in your

pajamas and watch the service.

That's Great!

That's a pretty low bar, you know compared to you get good dressed, get your family here.

Find you know, find directions, like you can just watch it online.
