UCLA - This is Optimism - Duration: 0:31.

We have to believe

that we can be better.

To help people

understand their full potential.

Something in me

that I can't, turn it off.

Why did I start this

in the first place?

I think its passion, empathy.

But it's just up to us

to decide how we want to use it.

You have to look,

you know, beyond yourself.

We fail all the time.

But I think the biggest thing

is to try to get back up.

Go past one's limits.

Define ourselves

in our own words

and our own ways.

That's optimism.

Spain's Economy is Growing, but Leaving Most Spaniards Behind - Duration: 13:22.

GREGORY WILPERT: Welcome to The Real News Network.

I'm Gregory Wilpert, joining you from Quito, Ecuador.

Protest and mobilizations continue in Catalonia, Spain where the region's independence movement

is fighting for a referendum on self-rule.

Some analysts say that one of the issues that has propelled the drive for independence from

Spain is the region's relatively strong economy.

Catalonia makes up about one-quarter of Spain's GDP, while its population is only one-sixth

of that of the rest of the country.

However, Spain's economy as a whole has been growing rapidly since it emerged from recession

in 2013 and is now one of the European Union's fastest-growing economies.

This is in stark contrast to Greece, which remains mired in depression, and to which

Spain used to be compared.

But just how did Spain emerge from its economic crisis of 2011 to 2013 and what does it mean?

Joining us to examine this question is Mark Weisbrot.

Mark is the co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research and is the author

of "Failed: What the 'Experts' Got Wrong about the Global Economy."

He joins us today from Washington, D.C.

Thanks for being here, Mark.

MARK WEISBROT: Thanks, Greg.

Thanks for having me.

GREGORY WILPERT: So, you just recently returned from a visit to Spain and you've been paying

close attention to the Spanish economy.

As I mentioned in the introduction, since 2013 Spain's economy has been one of the fastest-growing

economies in Europe.

The policies pursued by Spain after its recession were marked by austerity.

Does this mean that austerity worked in Spain but not in Greece?

Tell us about what happened according to your analysis.

MARK WEISBROT: Well, it's not doing that well, actually.

For the four years of the recovery, the growth isn't that great.

They had a decent year last year with 3.2% growth and 2.8% projected for this year.

But if you look at the overall statistics that matter to people, especially unemployment,

for example, is over 18% right now.

And it would be a lot higher if it wasn't for the 1.7 million foreign nationals that

have left the country.

And you have poverty and social exclusion is, people at risk for poverty and social

seclusion is over 27%.

And inequality has increased drastically since 2008.

It's the ratio of the top 20% to the bottom 20% is now at seven-and-a-half, which is the

third worst in the European Union.

Even for people who are lucky enough to have jobs, the majority of them are only getting

temporary contracts.

So, all this is really not a picture of an economy that's doing very well.

It has a long way to go before you could say that it's really even providing the basics

for the majority of people and especially youth.

The unemployment rate for youth is twice the level of the overall rate.

This is really a pretty bad situation.

If you look at what the IMF, which really represents the European authorities because

the European directors decide what the IMF writes, and says and recommends for Spain.

If you look at what they're saying, they want more austerity.

They're very worried about maintaining and increasing the so-called structural reforms

that they think are important for the recovery that they've had, which means weakening the

bargaining power of labor, cutting health care spending.

These are the kinds of structural reforms that they've had and continue to be recommended.

The worst thing, I think, is the way they've accepted mass unemployment.

And again, it's not really just the IMF, it's the government and the European authorities,

European Commission, the European Union.

They've accepted mass unemployment.

So, if you look at the IMF numbers, they say that the Spanish economy will reach its potential

output in 2019, so that's basically a year-and-a-half from now.

And yet unemployment will still be at 6%, sorry not 6%, 16%.

So in other words, 16% unemployment is going to be considered full employment going forward.

And that to me is something of an abomination.

I mean, I don't see how anybody could accept that as the future of Spain.

GREGORY WILPERT: I mean, unemployment was pretty high before, I mean, far higher.

I think it reached almost 25% at one point.

So they did get it down.

So you don't think that they'll be able to push it down below 16%?

And if not, why not?

MARK WEISBROT: Well, I think the main thing is fiscal policy at this point.

They need to invest more and create jobs.

Productivity has been very low.

So the private sector is not investing enough to increase productivity.

There's all kinds of things they can do to create jobs.

The interest rate at which they can borrow for 10 years is now 1.6%.

That's the yield on a 10-year bond for Spain.

So, they can borrow at 1.6%.

And that's actually the rate of inflation that they have right now, too.

So in other words, the borrowing is free for them in real terms, inflation-adjusted terms

they can borrow.

That's what they should be doing.

But of course, the European Union rules don't permit that.

And in fact, if you look at how they actually recovered, this is another way to see how

completely wrong the policies of the government, the right-wing government and the European

Union have been for Spain.

If you look at what actually happened, how did they recover?

In 2015, they grew twice as fast as was expected.

So, what did they do?

What was the cause of that?

The IMF determined that two-thirds of that was from the European Central Bank lowering

interest rates, which we can talk about if you want.

That's a really good thing but it wasn't the Spanish government's policy.

And from the lowering of oil prices and the rest of it was due to Spain actually having

an expansionary fiscal policy.

In other words, it ran bigger deficits than it was, it ran deficits, it increased its

structural deficit spending, and it violated the terms that the government agreed to with

the European Union.

So, they did the opposite of what they had agreed to do in terms of austerity.

And that's part of why the economy recovered as much as it did, in addition to the external

factors.

So, that goes completely against what the authorities, again, the government and the

European Union authorities have been recommending for Spain.

They've been saying, "Okay, you've really got to have this austerity because you have

to push down wages and make Spain more competitive."

And they did manage to hold down wages.

And they did create mass unemployment, which pushed down wages.

This is what's called an internal devaluation.

They can't control the currency because it's the Euro.

And so the idea is if you can't devalue by lowering the value of your currency, you have

to lower these labor costs so that you have what's called an internal devaluation.

And then you export your way out of the depression.

But the problem with that- GREGORY WILPERT: Sorry.

That brings me actually to the other question, which is related, which is that clearly an

internal devaluation would seem to imply also increasing inequality to some extent, at least

for those people who are affected by that the most.

I mean, according to a 2016 Oxfam report, Spain has "greater inequality almost 10 times

more than the European average, and 14 times more than Greece."

So is that where this inequality comes from, from this internal devaluation?

MARK WEISBROT: Yes.

And the IMF noted that as well.

That what happened was employment fell by about 20% from 2008 to 2013 and it hasn't

picked up enough to make up for that.

And that's where the inequality came 'cause the people, that's where the vast increase

in inequality came, the one that I mentioned since the recession.

Because it was the poor workers, the lower-income workers that were most affected by the loss

of jobs.

So you have this inequality.

And, again, the internal devaluation didn't really work because even though Spain did

increase its exports, if you look at what actually matters for growth and employment,

which is net exports, that is exports minus imports, that has not contributed anything

to the recovery of the last four years.

GREGORY WILPERT: And so what kind of economic policy would you say that Spain should follow

or pursue in order to have a more equitable type of growth and a true lowering of unemployment?

MARK WEISBROT: Well, they would need a more expansionary fiscal policy.

I mean, the European Central Bank is engaging in quantitative easing and keeping interest

rates low.

It took them quite a while.

They did it eight years after the Federal Reserve did it here in the U.S., but they

did finally come up with a monetary policy that they needed.

And so it's really fiscal policy.

It's budget policy.

As I said, they can borrow for free in real terms and so they should do that.

Or they could also, I mean, obviously they're not allowed to do that under the European

rules.

But Spain's a big country.

I mean, it's not like Greece.

They could try to negotiate that.

They could have some... but they're not gonna do that because, well, they're not gonna do

any of these things 'cause they have a right-wing government.

But when they get a more progressive government, that's one of the things they could do.

Even without having to go against the European Union constraints, they could also increase

employment by raising taxes and spending that.

What economists call balanced-budget multiplier.

In other words, if they raise taxes and spend more money, they can still create jobs and

move closer to full employment.

And Spain has a relatively low level of government spending relative to its economy as compared

to the rest of the European Union, so there's room for that as well.

And I think you obviously have, you've had a lot of resistance to these policies that

have given them this prolonged recession, and the weak recovery and the mass unemployment.

You have, as you know, Podemos became one of the largest parties in the country after

just a matter of a few years.

That's a left party that's promoting, they actually have an economic program that specifies

exactly that: increasing government spending on infrastructure and other productivity enhancing

and energy transformation, as well, to create jobs and move the economy closer to full employment.

GREGORY WILPERT: Yeah.

Well, we're gonna continue looking at that, especially since as you suggested there might

be change in government, especially after these protests and all the things that are

happening in Catalonia.

We'll certainly come back to you to see if they have developed more beneficial policies

by then.

So thanks, Mark, for joining us today.

MARK WEISBROT: Thanks, Greg.

GREGORY WILPERT: I was talking to Mark Weisbrot, the clinical director of the Center for Economic

and Policy Research and the author of "Failed: What the 'Experts' Got Wrong about the Global

Economy."

This Is The Cast of 'Drake & Josh' Now - Duration: 6:15.

It's been a long time since Drake & Josh went off the air.

While we've been constantly watching reruns and holiday specials since the series' 2007

finale, its child stars have been busy flying from the Nickelodeon nest to build interesting

and exciting careers.

Here's what the cast looks like now!

Josh Peck

Josh Peck lost a lot of weight since the end of the show, and while he's happy his weight-loss

journey has inspired others, he says he'd also be happy to stop talking about the way

he looks and just focus on his work.

After Drake & Josh, he nabbed roles in Drillbit Taylor and the Ice Age films, before breaking

out on the big screen in 2012's Red Dawn remake, then landing a lead in Grandfathered with

John Stamos, which lasted one season on Fox.

However, this former Nick kid has hearts in his eyes.

He wed longtime girlfriend Paige O'Brien in June 2017.

Drake Bell

After Drake & Josh went off the air, Drake Bell booked a few notable roles, appearing

in the spoof Superhero Movie and The Fish Tank.

He also did a lot of voiceover work, most notably voicing Peter Parker in the Ultimate

Spider-Man TV series.

Unfortunately, most of the hype surrounding Bell has been focused on his personal troubles,

which include a string of DUIs and the infamous spat about not getting an invite to co-star

Josh Peck's wedding.

Fortunately, the buds, who later shared a reunion scene on Grandfathered together, have

since made up.

Bell has been appearing in some buzzy new projects in 2017, including Cover Versions

and American Satan.

He also landed a voiceover role opposite Kesha in the Maker Studios animated series, Highly

Gifted.

Miranda Cosgrove

Miranda Cosgrove starred in School of Rock before joining Drake & Josh as the ambitious

Megan.

Cosgrove then landed her own show as the title character in Nick's iCarly, earning herself

five Kids' Choice nominations for favorite television actress.

She also landed in the Guinness World Records book for being the highest paid child star,

earning $180,000 per episode.

The actress took some time off in 2012 to attend the University of Southern California,

majoring in film.

While in college, she took a run at the small screen with Crowded — which was canceled

after just one season — but hopefully she finds a TV show that sticks very soon.

Yvette Nicole Brown

Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Drake and Josh's put-upon theater manager Helen, has

become one of the show's most successful alumni, booking small roles in big flicks like Tropic

Thunder and 500 Days of Summer.

Brown's next big break came in 2009, when she signed on to play Shirley Bennett on Community.

The show proved Brown could be a comedic powerhouse and opened doors for guest roles on Psych,

Once Upon a Time, Chuck, Family Guy, and many more.

Outside of acting, Brown is a busy volunteer.

The self-described "champion of kindness" promotes volunteerism through her website,

encouraging fans to support organizations such as Donors Choose and the Motion Picture

and Television Fund.

Jerry Trainor

As theater attendant Crazy Steve, Jerry Trainor carried that wacky spirit into future roles.

Trainor's biggest post-Drake & Josh part was playing the older brother and guardian of

Cosgrove's character in iCarly, earning him Kids Choice and Teen Choice nominations.

Since then, Trainor has stuck mostly to guest roles, and is set to reunite with his former

Drake & Josh co-star Bell for the 2017 film Cover Versions.

He's also a member of the band Nice Enough People with Allison Scagliotti, who played

Josh's extreme girlfriend Mindy on the show.

Allison Scagliotti

This former Drake & Josh cast member guest starred on several hit series, before landing

a lead role in the Syfy series Warehouse 13.

Scagliotti was hitting up Hollywood while hitting the books at NYU and UCLA.

She led the Freeform series Stitchers and booked a recurring role on The CW's The Vampire

Diaries.

She also somehow found time to star in the Off-Broadway musical Jasper in Deadland and

has said she'd love to take her talents back to the stage someday.

Dylan Minnette

Having recently starred in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, many fans don't realize Dylan Minnette

got his start on Drake & Josh as Jeffrey.

After his appearance on the show, Minnette started to book more high-profile guest-starring

roles, appearing on Prison Break, Lost, and Ghost Whisperer, and landed a starring gig

on Saving Grace and Awake.

Minnette kicked off his film career with parts in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No

Good, Very Bad Day, Goosebumps, and Don't Breathe, but it's 13 Reasons Why that's catapulted

this former Nick kid to the A-list.

Vanessa Hudgens

The same year Vanessa Hudgens booked a small guest-starring role as Rebecca, one of Drake's

flings on Drake & Josh, she landed the part of Gabriella in Disney's High School Musical.

She used her instant icon status to launch a music career, releasing her first album,

V, in 2006, and her second, Identified, in 2008.

Since then, Hudgens has continued to maintain a successful showbiz career.

The actress moved viewers to tears in 2016 as Rizzo in Grease Live!, going on with the

show, despite the fact that her had father passed away the day before.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale also got her showbiz start on Drake & Josh as Hazel, yet another one of Drake's

flings.

She quickly built upon the experience, landing a leading role on the short lived NBC reboot

of the Bionic Woman, and booking movies such as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

Hale's big break came when she landed the lead role of Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little

Liars, and she's slated to star in The CW dramedy Life Sentence, due out in 2018.

'Battle of the Sexes': How accurate is the movie about the infamous tennis match? - Duration: 4:33.

'Battle of the Sexes': How accurate is the movie about the infamous tennis match?

Battle of the Sexes retells an event in American history thats so bizarre, it doesnt quite seem true 40 years later.

The film focuses on the nationally televised 1973 Battle of the Sexes tennis match in which 29-year-old Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) beat 55-year-old former champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) in three straight sets.

The actual match was a pure pantomime, outright silly. Yet what was going on underneath was incredibly serious, says the movies screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy. That win had a huge sociological effect.

Beaufoy capped his research by sitting down with King for a marathon interview before writing the screenplay. (Riggs died at age 77 in 1995.)

Id say 99% of it they got right, says King, 73. They certainly captured the essence.

Some key points of accuracy:

Their grand entrance actually was that bizarre

King really did ride into the Houston Astrodome on a feather-adorned Cleopatra litter carried by four bare-chested hunks. Promoter Jerry Perenchio suggested the absurd entrance.

He said to me, I know you're a feminist. So you probably won't get on this Egyptian litter, will you? King recalls. I said, Yes, I love it! Let's go. He was shocked. I got on it, and we walked out.

Riggs entered in a rickshaw drawn by young women.

We really brought the entertainment factor to the match and made it exciting to people, says King.

The net exchange of gifts went down

King found out that Riggs, who was paid $50,000 to wear a Sugar Daddy jacket during the match, intended to give her a giant Sugar Daddy candy on a stick. Perenchio had a small pig for King to present him in exchange.

I said, Are you kidding, you have that? That was better than anything I could think of, says King.

I named it Robert Larimore Riggs, Bobbys formal name, and put a little ribbon around his neck. It was so cute.

She made Perenchio promise that the pig would never end up as ham on a table. Let it live a long life at a farm. They gave it to an Oklahoma farmer.

The tennis points ring true

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris made a 10-minute video of the real periods of play they wanted to depict.

Stone and Carell played similar rallies (sequences of back-and-forth shots) under the guidance of an instructor, using the techniques and strategy of their respective players.

We experimented with doing the exact points, but it looked fake, says Dayton.

It was important that the players not anticipate where the ball was going. In the end, we played each point like a real match, not knowing who would win.

Billie Jeans tennis whites were spot-on

Kings actual match apparel is housed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

But she was impressed with the completely correct costume Stone wore — right down to audacious blue-suede tennis shoes.

I was so surprised, it was an exact replica, says King.

There was some creative license taken (SPOILER alert!)

King did get a pre-match haircut from her hairdresser girlfriend Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough).

But it wasnt five minutes before the match, says King. Nor did King break down and cry alone in the locker room as Stone does after the historic win.

They kept me so busy after that, but that's how I was feeling, such relief, says King. Emma captured it perfectly.

Battle of the Sexes arrives in theaters Friday in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, San Francisco and Washington. It expands nationwide on Sept. 29.

What Is a Church Community? - Duration: 1:33.

Church Community

God doesn't love us for just an hour or two once a week.

So if church exists to help us feel closer to Him, -

- it needs to be bigger than a Sunday service.

What if believers didn't just form a congregation?

What if they formed an extended family of faith?

No matter where Mormons live, and they live around the globe.

One thing remains constant.

Every member of the Church belongs to a local group -

- of believers called a ward.

Here's the Relief Society; every ward has one.

And together they form one of the largest -

- women's organizations in the world.

Tonight it looks like they're putting together care packages

It's not easy being a teenager these days.

So every ward has a strong youth program to reinforce values -

- and to let the kids know they're not alone.

Looks like someone needed some help moving.

Oh, must be Monday, time for family night at home.

The neighborhood party, and it looks like everyone's invited.

Sunday, the ward meets together, -

- there's no paid clergy, all volunteers their time.

That includes duties in the Church and service -

- projects in the community or just dropping in to say hello.

It's what Jesus Christ did.

That is why Mormons do it all over the world.

awkward yeah so I realized that yesterday had another thought that I

wanted to share but I can't remember what it is so I guess I won't be sharing

that

aren't the eggs gonna turn into scrambled eggs in here guess I'll find out

spoken from a person that doesn't know what brownie tastes like those smells

pretty good they definitely look a little funky

I guess he'll tell me what they taste like when he gets home in like

six-hours now clean up and then back to school I remembered what my other

thought was about the whole colonoscopy thing since there since their putting a camera up my butt

just put the towel over them there they will sit until he comes home later to

school we go my arm hurts and I can't tell if it's partially out of place or

if I pulled the muscle like in my neck just hurts okay

recipe and I mean I can't taste them so you have to here's the knife they sound
