Today's question: What is a Medicare Advantage HMO plan?
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are managed care plans that combine
Original Medicare Parts A and B with additional benefits like prescription drug, dental and
vision coverage, all in one simple package.
One type of managed care plan is an HMO, where you designate a primary care physician, your
PCP, from a list of network providers.
Your PCP coordinates your care and refers you to specialists or hospitals when necessary.
HMOs help you manage your budget.
Plans typically include affordable copays and may offer more predictable costs than
other types of plans, so you'll have a good idea of how much you'll spend on healthcare
during the year.
And most HMOs pay providers directly, which means you don't have to file a claim for
reimbursement of medical services.
Generally, you're required to use doctors, specialists, hospitals and other medical service
providers in your plan's network.
You may see a non-network provider or receive non-network services if the visit is approved
by your primary care physician and your plan first.
However, you may pay a larger share of the costs.
If you need urgent or emergency care, you can go to the closest emergency room.
If your current PCP is not in the HMO network, it might be worth changing your doctor to
take advantage of the HMO plan's benefits.
