Jeff Shelly - Disney Character Art "When Did It Start For You?" D23 Expo (2015) - Duration: 2:33.I would always just grab a piece of paper to start drawing and filling up pages.
I was one of those kids who always got in trouble drawing in school.
I grew up in Pennsylvania just surrounded by farmland and cows
everywhere. You know there's nothing ready to do but make up your own
adventures and stories and one way to do that was me drawing. I can escape and do
anything I imagined.
Watching Disney every Sunday night at home, just race in to watch it it's just such a good
feeling to see that Tinkerbell come up and hit the screen and everything turns
into color, it was one of my fondest early memories. My dad really inspired me
drawing because he always had a sketchbook and he do a portrait
of me, he would sketched some characters. I remember taking those
drawings into school and show everybody like look my Dad did.
My first year in school and I had a teacher, Milt Neil who was a an old Disney animator, who created
Dumbo worked on the Donald Duck shorts and he came in and write on the
blackboard he just drew Donald Duck. I was like oh my god... I'm going to work for Disney!
That's what went through my head in that flash.
The thing that was most
important that Milt taught me was having the characters having soul or energy.
You can draw a character and they're really stiff or you can draw a character that
has like a living soul. That's what I strive for when I draw.
When I go out into the real world and drawing it on a big pad and giving these drawings out.
Its just it's so fun to see the fan. That's to me that's like that's it you know.
Their mouths drop of it's kind of like that magic when I saw Milt draw Donald
for the first time. It triggered all these old memories of me growing up watching Disney.
That's when it started for me.
