Theresa May goes shoeless for Japanese tea ceremony as she begins three days of talks

Dressed in the red and white colours of the Japanese flag after her overnight flight from the UK, she met her counterpart Shinzo Abe at a teahouse in Kyoto, 's historic former capital.

She removed her trademark leopard print shoes and Mr Abe took off his own footwear before they entered the house, in line with the Japanese practice of not wearing outdoor shoes indoors.

After admiring the calm and simplicity of the small wooden teahouse with paper wall and its small walled garden the leaders sat on a low bench at a table, flanked by interpreters.

The tea was brewed by the master of ceremonies and his assistants and poured into special bowls.

Mrs was shown how to rotate the bowl before drinking - a practice said to protect a pattern on one side being damaged by the drinker's mouth.

The elaborate ceremony involves precise and intricate actions and gestures designed to purify the green tea drink and to commemorate each such occasion as a unique and never-to-be-repeated event involving those participants and the atmosphere the ritual creates.

Mrs May, who was said by aides to have "really enjoyed" the tea ceremony, then continued what is planned to be an intensive engagement this week with Mr Abe.

They shared a banquet, where the extensive menu of Japanese specialities included tofu, sushi, sea urchin and salted entrails of sea cucumber yam. The pair then boarded one of Japan's famous super-fast Bullet Trains for the three-hour trip to the capital, Tokyo.

Downing Street said the amount of time the two leaders were spending together before more formal talks was "very positive and quite unusual".

British officials will hope that Mrs May's unusually long stay in a single country will underline to her hosts her regard for their relationship which will grow even more in importance after Brexit.
