Providing medical evidence for a Disability Support Pension claim - Duration: 1:51.
So you've decided to take the next step of applying for Disability Support Pension.
When you contacted the Department of Human Services to make a
claim for DSP, you were sent a claim pack. This claim pack is also available on our website.
You will need to supply medical evidence to help us determine how your
condition affects your ability to work. This should include information about
the diagnosis of your medical conditions and the treatment and prognosis of each
condition. For some conditions you'll need to provide evidence from a
specialist to confirm the diagnosis. For psychiatric and psychological conditions
you'll need to provide us with medical evidence from a psychiatrist or clinical
psychologist confirming the diagnosis. For conditions that affect the ear
evidence from an audiologist or ear nose and throat specialist will be needed
and for conditions that affect your vision you'll need evidence from an
ophthalmologist. We won't be able to assess your DSP claim without evidence.
For more information about the medical evidence you need to provide us, please
refer to the medical evidence checklist in your claim form or on the website.
Your claim will be reviewed once we have received all the elements you need to
submit. As part of the claim process you may be referred for additional
assessments by an Assessor employed by the Department. You may also be referred
for an assessment by a Government Contracted Doctor.

Are you eligible for Disability Support Pension? - Duration: 4:45.
So you're thinking of applying for Disability Support Pension.
Well you'll have to meet certain criteria. You have to be 16 years or
older but younger than the age when you'd get the age pension, an Australian
resident and in Australia when you claim. Usually you'll need to have been a
resident for at least 10 years, although there are some exceptions. To get
Disability Support Pension you have to have one or more permanent medical
conditions. This could be a physical intellectual or psychiatric injury or
disability which must be fully diagnosed treated and stabilized. This means that
all reasonable treatment has been undertaken for your condition and it's
not likely to significantly improve within two years. If you've got further
treatment such as surgery planned in the next two years and this will mean an
increase in your ability to work you may be ineligible for
Disability Support Pension. If there are no permanent medical conditions or
permanent medical conditions that are not considered fully diagnosed, treated
and stabilized you will not be eligible for Disability Support Pension.
An example that is obviously not permanent is a broken leg while having to wear a
cast is inconvenient and may prevent you from working it will generally improve
significantly within two years. Even a serious disease like cancer or heart
disease doesn't always meet the eligibility criteria for
Disability Support Pension. It really depends on the severity of the condition and whether
you're likely to recover or significantly improve in that two-year
period. If your conditions meet the fully diagnosed treated and stabilized
criteria, the next step is to be assessed against the impairment tables. The
impairment tables are used to assess the impact of a medical condition on your
day-to-day functioning. This means things that you may or may not be able to do.
Your impairment or impairments must rate 20 points or more under the
impairment tables for you to be further considered for Disability Support Pension.
This means your medical conditions must
have a severe impact on your day-to-day functioning. Take someone with a back
injury, if they can sit in a car for at least 30 minutes but can't bend forward
to pick up a light object placed at knee height the impairment rating would be
10 points. The functional impact is considered moderate.
There are 15 impairment tables they cover different body systems like upper and lower limbs
or mental health and intellectual function. We may arrange for you to
attend an appointment to assess the impact of your medical condition on your
ability to work. We don't take into account personal factors such as age,
transport, location of residents or family issues. This criterion for
Disability Support Pension is about whether you're unable to work or be
retained for work for 15 hours or more per week within the next two years.
In some circumstances you may need to have actively participated in a program of
support for at least 18 months in the past 3 years. A program of support is an
Australian Government funded program to help you prepare for, find or maintain work.
Programs of support are delivered by Disability Employment Services,
Jobactive, Community Development Program and Australian Disability Enterprises.
Providers will work with you to develop a program tailored to your level of
impairment to address any needs and barriers to employment you may have.
The provider will connect you to vocational rehabilitation and employment services
that have a particular focus on developing the skills you need to
improve your capacity to find and keep a job. Finally it's important for you to
know that any income and assets will be taken into account. This includes any
compensation you are entitled to and other payouts like redundancy from your employment.

TAMMY VEN DANGE: So once we knew that Chris was going to be okay, we went ahead and weighed the fleece
and were surprised to find that he was carrying over 40 kilos worth of wool on
top of him. So that broke the world record, the Guinness world record, by over
12 kilos and we've been working with the National Museum to properly display this fleece.
MATHEW TRINCA: I really want to pay tribute to the work of the RSPCA and the foresight
of the staff here and of Tammy Ven Dange who decided at a relatively early stage
that it was important that this fleece was preserved and protected for the
nation. It's an amazing story, the story of 'Chris' the sheep saved on the outskirts
of Canberra is something that's already been taken into the national memory.
It's an important story because it says something about the great value of
animal welfare in our country. All the iconography of the wool industry, the
merino, the pastoralists, the shearer have been taken into the national memory.
So having this fleece in the National Historical Collection allows us to
tell those stories as well as remind people about the importance of
looking after our animals and of the people who undertake that work throughout
the country.
