Kyle Brooks: "What You're Doing Is Real." - Duration: 2:28.♪ <bluegrass guitar music> KYLE BROOKS: What the research was, was coming in here
and getting base data as far as the populations and all that.
Now, at Rogers here there really hasn't been a lot of research before.
There was one survey done, for the herpetology index, of the area
about twenty or so years ago, but, that's it.
So, this is really the first time a major in-depth
look at the populations of the salamanders here has started.
So, we just came in, created some plots,
searched them methodically,
figured out exactly what's here as far as the salamander populations go,
as far as age and all that,
and recorded it.
And, it's important to understand because we live on the very edge
of the salamander hotspot of the world
So once we understand whether or not the population is healthy,
we can look at the environment itself.
and say, y'know, if the environment is healthy, maybe that's what's making
the salamander population healthy.
And, once we understand those characteristics of the environment
creating this population
we can take that and apply it to other areas.
So, really it's all about promoting salamander conservation in the long term.
We only have one piece of the puzzle in understanding what exactly is here.
But, you have to have that foundation to build the research for the long term.

I was involved with the SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference this year.
Now, we eneded up going to SURC West at SUNY Freedonia
where we got to present what we're doing here.
And, it was really a unique experience
because , you get there you really realize, first of all,
yeah what you're doing is real.
Not only what we did, but the implications of what we did
and what that means for our learning experience
but also what it means as far as conservation goes,
what it means as far as animal populations
and understanding the environment that's practically in my backyard.
It's a simple presentation
but that simple presentation carried a lot of meaning with it
Not only for me, but for, in the future, possibly real-world applications
Plus it was also a pretty big resume builder, so that was cool, too.

PROF D.: Yep. KYLE: Oh my gosh we found the family!
PROF D.: We found something. Okay.
KYLE: It's so exciting!
KYLE: You want me to go for one while you go for the other?
