I Am, I Am, I Am - book review: An extraordinary memoir by Maggie O'Farrell

I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes With Death by Maggie O'Farrell (Tinder Press, £18.99) What follows is a chilling event, unflinching in fact and emotion, setting the tone for this remarkable book.

I Am, I Am, I Am recounts the 17 times when novelist O'Farrell has narrowly escaped death. There are episodes of near drowning, of life-threatening miscarriages, of amoebic parasites.

There are close shaves with cars, with turbulent planes and a knife-point robbery in Chile. As an award-winning writer of seven novels including Instructions For A Heatwave and This Must Be The Place, O'Farrell is renowned for her emotional acuity.

One chapter in I Am, I Am, I Am explores a doctor's failure to listen to her medical history, which causes her near-death during childbirth and provokes outrage at the arrogance of the doctors she encounters.

And yet, at the end of the same chapter, while the surgeons are "stitching and stapling me together again" after an emergency Caesarean section, an anonymous "man in beige" in the operating theatre shows her tenderness and compassion in a moving conclusion to the story.

One of the striking features of the book is the respect O'Farrell shows her secondary characters. Whether ex-boyfriends, her husband, her friends or her children, she tells you as much as you need to know without ever betraying those around her.

With all these incidents, there is a sense – sometimes explicit, usually implicit – of how they have contributed to O'Farrell's career as a writer.

On a plane ride to Hong Kong, "suddenly the plane is falling, dropping, plummeting, like a rock thrown from a cliff". O'Farrell had been mourning her disappointing degree result and the academic life she would no longer live.

But by the end of the chapter, "in the monsoon season, when the rain is a constant… I started to write". I Am, I Am, I Am is an extraordinary book.

Each of O'Farrell's experiences would be anecdote enough in their own right, but collectively they recount an extraordinary life thus far lived. The writing is beautifully restrained and all the more emotionally powerful for it.

And this is a book of extraordinary courage: the courage to have survived these "seventeen brushes with death" and the courage to write about them with such searing candour.

It is a profoundly affecting, powerful and life-affirming book.  If you only read one memoir this year, make it O'Farrell's.

الفيديو دا ممكن يغيَر حياتك - Biggest Reason for Success - Duration: 2:14.

Do you wish to change your life and become successful?

You came to the right place.

It is claimed that Aristotle said:

نحن عبارة عن الافعال التى نكررها.

التمييز اذاً ليس فعلاً ولكن عادة

He definitely said it in Latin

But what does this mean?

We are the whatever we do everyday

Excellence is not a one time thing but repetition.

This is kinda obvious and logical.

But what is interesting is it was scientifically proven that

we lose our willpower energy when we decide to do something hard

But forming habits might cause an exception

Because it was also proven by research

that habits consume less energy

than deciding to do something every time

you want to do it.

But not everything we repeat is going to make us successful

If we want to be successful we need to build success habits.

So, what are some of the habits of successful people.

Ben Franklin for instance, a scientist, inventor and one of the founding fathers of the US.

Everyday when he woke up, he asked himself--

Then he would eat breakfast and work for 3 hours.

Mark Zukerburg,

who made Facebook that wastes a lot of our time,

didn't like to waste his own time by picking a different shirt every morning.

Some habits are common among successful people

Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest people on Earth

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla

Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft

all have a common habit-- Reading.

Warren Buffet says that he spends 80% of his day reading.

Elon Musk started reading since he was 3,.

Bill Gates reads 50 books per year,

approximately a book per week.

Start the change now.

Everything that we repeat,

everyday, every week and every month-- are the things that shape us

And by changing those things, we could change our lives.

Wasting time on facebook, laying on bed and being lazy

All these are bad habits that we should get rid off and

substitute with good ones.

And until we meet next time. Peace!

Western Sydney University vying for top prize in World Solar Challenge

Testing of the 2017 Solar Car in the lead-up to the opening.

A TEAM of students from Western Sydney University is set to launch what it described as its "top secret" new solar powered car to compete in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in October.

It will be the third time the university has participated in the biannual challenge, which involves a 3000km drive from Darwin to Adelaide using only solar power.

The university's latest entrant will be officially launched at a special event on the Parramatta South campus tonight.

Dubbed the UNLIMITED 20, the car is the work of the university's School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics and a raft of other students who make up the Solar Car Team.

"The team have kept tight-lipped on the details of our new solar car for as long as possible, to maintain our competitive edge in the World Solar Challenge," said Project Lead Saami Bashar.

"It is exciting to finally unveil to the wider University community, as well as all of our sponsors and supporters, the final result of all of our hard work. The vehicle is reminiscent of its predecessor UNLIMITED, hence the 20 title.

The original version competed in the 2015 World Solar Challenge and crashed after a suspension failure but was hastily repaired and crossed the finishing line in tenth place out of 43 teams.

But in many ways the new edition is a bold departure from the team's previous entry, its creators say.

4m wide reincarnation has a sleek, aerodynamic and futuristic-looking design. "Our aim this year was to build the fastest car we possibly could, to put everything we have into this car to challenge for first position," Mr Bashar said.

"Our main design philosophy was to generate a very organic body shape. We've managed to eliminate the rear overhang and make the fairings much shorter and narrower, while still maintaining enough space to squeeze in the driver, mechanics and electronics.".

Grace Mitchell, the Graphics Design Lead for the team, says another departure from the previous cars was the use of paint on the exterior of UNLIMITED 20, compared to vinyl wrapping used in the past.

"Paint provides a much smoother surface, which allows the car to slip through the air with minimal disturbance. We are so pleased with the result of the paint job," she said.

The students manage every aspect of the production and design of the vehicle, as well as sponsorships, marketing and the administrative elements of their involvement in the Challenge. The race will take place on October 8 to 15.
