Breaking: Police invite Saraki for questioning over Offa robbery - Duration: 1:37.

Senate president Bukola Saraki has been invited by the police over the deadly robbery that took place at Offa in Kwara state.

The Senate president was invited to answer to allegations surrounding his links to the armed robbers behind the deadly robbery in April, Daily Trust reports.

Neymar returns from injury for Brazil against Croatia at Anfield - Duration: 2:02.

Neymar returns from injury for Brazil against Croatia at Anfield

Just last month Neymar admitted that he was worried about the prospect of injury derailing another World Cup campaign. The Brazil captain missed his nations painful conclusion to their own party in 2014 due to a back problem.

And his place at Russia 2018 now appeared under threat after his club season with PSG was abruptly ended by a fractured metatarsal in his right foot on February 25.

There is always that fear of it coming back, he said two months into his latest spell on the sidelines. I need to lose that fear as quickly as possible to arrive at the World Cup at my best..

Yet Neymar showed no sign of fear on Sunday when he made a stunning statement 24 minutes into his first game in 98 days.

After being introduced as a half-time substitute during Brazils 2-0 friendly win over Croatia at Anfield, Neymar ran at right back Sime Vrsaljko before, cutting inside and belting the ball into the net via the crossbar.

The worlds most expensive footballer, who cost PSG £198million when they signed him from Barcelona last summer, looked confident as ever — like a man ready to lead his countrys bid for world title No 6 in Russia.

Neymar was greeted by warm applause from the mostly neutral Merseyside crowd as he replaced Fernandinho at the start of the second half. That applause turned to raucous cheering when the 26-year-old rifled his side ahead midway through the second half.

Neymar is Brazils usual skipper but Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus wore the armband at Anfield. He was just keeping it warm. Neymar is a captain who leads by example. He epitomises the Brazilian philosophy of attacking relentlessly and with flair.

Here was a man who had been out of action for more than three months but he was immediately demanding the ball from his team-mates. He looked more than comfortable in possession, with his close control as good as ever.

Neymars return to the pitch came as a big boost to Brazil ahead of their World Cup campaign, which begins on June 17 against Switzerland in Rostov-on-Don.

Brazil, who will also face Costa Rica and Serbia in Group E, play their final warm-up game next Sunday when they take on Austria in Vienna. Russia 2018 will be Neymars second World Cup finals.

His only previous campaign ended in heartbreak as he broke a bone in his back during a quarter-final win over Colombia in his home country, before his team-mates were thrashed 7-1 by Germany without him in the last four.

This Is the Most Effective Way For Women to Lose Belly Fat - Duration: 1:31.

According to Experts, This Is the Most Effective Way For Women to Lose Belly Fat

When it comes to burning body fat, a lot of women have the same target area: the belly.

Much to the chagrin of many of us, belly fat is notoriously stubborn, and it's important

to note that you can't spot reduce fat.

In other words, simply being diligent about crunches isn't going to help you achieve your

goal.

Nutrition Phelps described refined sugar as the "number

one enemy" of women who are working to reduce belly fat.

"Reduce or better yet eliminate refined sugar all together," she suggested.

Phelps also recommended eliminating processed foods from your diet, noting that if a food

item comes in a package and has a list of unrecognizable ingredients, it's best to keep

it out of your shopping cart and fridge.

Stay away from refined sugar and processed foods, but increase your consumption of protein

and veggies.

Exercise

women seeking to reduce belly fat shouldn't be afraid to lift heavy weights.

To make the most of your workouts, Spraul recommended putting an emphasis on total-body

movements.

"Squats and deadlifts are much more effective than isolating muscle groups with curls and

dumbbell raises, and total-body moves also can help prevent imbalances from cropping

up," Spraul said.

"Full-body movements create the largest calorie-burning effect — especially if you are lifting heavy!"

The Best Netflix and Hulu Shows for When You Just Want Background Noise - Duration: 7:09.

The Best Netflix and Hulu Shows for When You Just Want Background Noise

Living in the age of the great content glut means there is no shortage of extremely good, often intense television to watch.

The problem is, prestige TV sucks when you just need something to play on a screen while sorting laundry, making dinner, or fucking around on your phone.

But dont fear, dear reader, for I and some of the VICE staff have compiled a list of the best shows streaming on Netflix and Hulu that you can watch when cant devote your attention to a show like Handmaids Tale or Jessica Jones.

Forged in Fire (Hulu).

Forged in Fire is a History Channel bladesmithing competition reality show where four contestants are tasked with making a blade out of a surprise material in an extremely short amount of time. Its like Chopped but with knives instead of (boring) food.

The two contestants who make it onto the final round are sent back home to their home forges (of course they have home forges) and given five days to make a notable sword from history.

It might sound like a macho show, but its tone is actually quite sweet. The contestants are talented artisans and the judges really want them to succeed.

If youre a fan of martial arts or watching someone use a sword to slaughter a ballistics dummy, this is the show for you. Planet Earth and Planet Earth II (Netflix).

The world is a beautiful and interesting place, and David Attenboroughs Planet Earth series shows that off impeccably.

The gentle melody of Attenboroughs voiceover explaining whats going on with majestic shots of nature and cute animals makes this show a must-see, even if you are too preoccupied to actually really listen to him.

If youve already seen all of Planet Earth and Planet Earth II, do not fear. Netflix has many moreAttenborough nature documentaries that are well worth your time. Keeping Up with the Kardashians (Hulu).

Some people enjoy keeping up with the Kardashians, while others resent the fact that modern life requires them to. I fall into the former category.

Regardless of your personal opinion of the Kardashian–Jenner clan, watching their family drama unfold is highly entertaining, and the shows pacing and plot lines are impeccably edited together. American Ninja Warrior (Hulu).

If youre unfamiliar with American Ninja Warrior, buckle up because youre in for a treat. The show allows you watch a series of talented athletes attempt to complete insanely difficult obstacle courses, interspersed with heartwarming segments about how each contestant got to where they are today (they are on American Ninja Warrior).

The surprisingly progressive element here is that people of any gender can compete, unlike many other sports-centric programming—one of the most famous contestants in American Ninja Warrior history (ANW history exists) is Kacy Catanzaro, a petit woman who did better than nearly all of the men.

Its one of those shows where you go from this is silly to this is great! in about five minutes. . How Its Made (Hulu).

Every wondered how the gingerbread houses you buy in the store get made? How about wet suits or exercise bikes? How Its Made shows you just that, taking you inside the factories where the products we consume come to be.

It is a little boring, a little hypnotic, and the perfect show to watch while you do something else. (Also good to watch while youre very stoned.).

Every episode of House Hunters is exactly the same. A man and a woman want to buy a house in Denver, where the husband has just gotten a job as a management consultant for a beverage company.

The man wants something modern and move-in-ready, the woman wants something with character and history. This, the tension between move-in-ready and fixer-upper, masculine and feminine, order and chaos, is the eternal conflict of the universe.

The first house they see is very modern and stark, like where a character in a Netflix show lives. It is out of their budget.

The second house is older, much more to the womans taste, but the kitchen is hideous, but the backyard is large, but the second bedroom is tiny.

The third house is a compromise, but it needs some work in the bathroom, can they afford to do that? It turns out they can and that it is fine.

The last scene shows them in the house, maybe not ecstatic but happy enough, content in an American way.

You are confident they will have children and their children will make the same journey, maybe on House Hunters itself because the show will never stop being on TV.

It has always been on TV, its just that no one could see the episodes before HGTV existed. . Guys Grocery Games (Hulu).

You either love Guy Fieri or you dont, but regardless of how you feel about insanely rich food or his frosted tips, you cant deny that his cooking reality competition show is a fun time.

Contestants are given a meal to make, and have to use specific items from the grocery store where they film the competition. The food the contestants make almost never looks appetizing but the real point of the show is the goofin around.

Watching this show is like putting on a warm bathrobe—every character is flat in a pleasantly predictable way. Rory and Lorelais banter is a mainstay.

You can easily choose the season you will play in the background based off of which of Rorys boyfriends was your favorite. .

Best Spanish Podcast for Beginners (with subtitles) - Las Personas - Duration: 5:54.

Hey, guys. Welcome to another podcast with Ana and Diego.

Remember that in this series, I will play the role of a teacher named Ana.

And I will play the role of a student named Diego.

In this series we talk about grammar and vocabulary topics.

These podcasts also follow the same order as our Complete Spanish Course.

And don't forget to activate the subtitles in your native language.

Click on the subtitles button below. Let's get started, friends!

People

Hi Diego. How are you?

I'm very well, Ms. Martinez. And I'm already practicing our vocabulary for the day.

That good. I see you are a very intelligent man.

You see how I'm also practicing the vocabulary?

Definitely. You are a very special woman to me.

Uh, I mean because you help me a lot with my Spanish.

Sure, but seriously, we've already used several new words from today's lesson.

A man, we know, is a male adult,

while a woman is a female adult.

Your dad would be an example of a man and your mom is a woman.

And as we have already said, I also am a man and you are a woman.

Exactly. Moving on in the page, we usually use the term boy or girl

to refer to someone in their teens.

Of course. For example, I would say that my 15 year old nephew is a boy.

That's a good example. But being a boy or a girl doesn't necessarily mean that you are a teenager.

Sometimes these phrases can include young adults, too.

In some Latin American countries, saying that someone is a boy

can simply refer to the fact of that person is male.

Can you give us a example of that?

Okay. Yesterday a friend was asking about you.

She asked me, "Who is that boy in your Spanish class? "

Even though you are an adult, she talked about you saying "boy".

She simply said that you are relatively young and you are of the masculine gender.

It seems to me that in English a translation, more or less, it would be "guy".

Something like that.

Well, our next word isn't as confusing: the baby.

Obviously we say "baby" to talk about a very young child,

usually that can't even walk or talk.

And if it's a boy, that is masculine, we say, The baby is very young.

If it's a girl, we say The baby is very young.

The article changes depending on the gender of the baby, but the word itself remains the same.

And boys and girls?

Boys and girls are young boys and girls that have not yet begun adolescence.

The progression of a person would be baby, child, adult.

And depending on the context or country, the word boy

could refer to someone in any of these ages.

Definitely. You mentioned adult, which we already know is a grown and independent person.

Yes, my only note on the word adult is that it doesn't change form.

A man is an adult and a woman is an adult too.

Neither the article nor the end of the word adult changes when we are talking about a woman.

Very good. And to finish up, What can you tell us about the titles?

We use Mr. plus the surname to address a man.

The title for women changes depending on whether she is married or not.

We talk to a married women by saying Mrs. plus her last name

while we use Miss plus the last name for single women.

Great lesson, Ana. I just have one more question for you.

Tell me, Diego.

Well your friend who was asking about me

mm hmm...

Is she a Mrs. or a Miss?

Careful, Mr. Gómez!

UFC has scrapped plans for a major tournament featuring Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz - Duration: 5:41.

Football News24/7 The UFC is starving for top stars right now; as it looks like Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar Nate Diaz, and Georges St-Pierre have no plans in place to return to the Octagon anytime soon

Currently, the biggest fight slated to go down in the UFC's future is a chance for light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to become a two-division champion when he challenges for Stipe Miocic's heavyweight crown

It turns out the UFC actually had some plans in place to try and revitalize the hype surrounding the promotion

Starving For Stars It's no secret that UFC President Dana White and brass have been working hard to try and book the likes of McGregor, Diaz and St-Pierre back into the Octagon

A recent report from MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani, however, notes that the promotion actually had a massive plan laid out for each of these men's returns

The Tourney It seems that a four-man tourney was the plan; having Diaz take on St-Pierre, and the winner facing the winner of a Conor McGregor vs

Khabib Nurmagomedov fight for the lightweight title. The UFC wanted to have Diaz vs

St-Pierre go down on August 4th in Los Angeles, and McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov in the fall

The winners would've fought at the end of the year for the 155-pound crown. Negotiations for a fight between St-Pierre and Diaz fell through, however, not to mention that the Canadian isn't necessarily ready to get back into the cage either (quotes via MMA Fighting): "I'm not ready to fight yet," he told MMAFighting

com. "I need to wait until all the symptoms of my ulcer stop. "It's much better than it was but it's not 100 percent yet

If I try to return for a training camp for a fight it will amplify and go back to what it was in the beginning

"I need to get over this first for my own health and safety." No Drama Show Wanted As for McGregor vs

Nurmagomedov, the Russian's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, tells MMA Fighting that he and The Eagle are more focused on a fight with St-Pierre rather than the Irishman: "We believe the fight to make is the Georges St-Pierre fight at 155 pounds," Ali Abdelaziz said

"Khabib wants to fight for legacy and not for a soap opera drama show, and we think Conor doesn't deserve this opportunity

"The guy hasn't fought in almost two years. Why does he deserve to fight for the title? He should get his ass back in the line and work his way up

" Abdelaziz then noted that the only reason Nurmagomedov would want to fight McGregor is to pay him back for the incident he pulled in Brooklyn several weeks ago, attacking the fighter bus the lightweight champion was on: "There's only one reason Khabib wants to fight him: to make him pay for what he did [in Brooklyn]

For Khbaib, it's not only about money. It's about disciplining him. "That being said, UFC should be talking to Georges, not Conor

" Helwani noted in his report that it's possible the UFC re-books this four-man tourney by having Diaz vs

McGregor 3 and St-Pierre vs. Nurmagomedov, with the winners facing each other. However, Helwani's sources indicate there's not much talk of that happening at the moment

What are your thoughts on the UFC's scrapped four-man tourney plans? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below! Do YOU want to write for GiveMeSport? Get started today by signing-up and submitting an article HERE: https://www

Wigan suspend Joel Tomkins for abusive rant at barmaid - Duration: 3:05.

Wigan suspend Joel Tomkins for abusive rant at barmaid

Wigan have suspended the forward Joel Tomkins for four weeks and fined his brother Sam after footage emerged of them being abusive towards bar staff in a local pub.

The brothers, who have both played for England and featured in Saturday's Challenge Cup defeat by Warrington, have been heavily reprimanded by the Super League club for their part in the disturbance which, despite emerging online only over the weekend, took place several weeks ago.

Joel, who also represented England in rugby union in 2013, has been stood down by Wigan with immediate effect for a month and been fined £10,000 while Sam has been fined £5,000. He, however, remains available for selection.

Their director, Kris Radlinski, labelled the footage "disgusting" in confirming the punishment. In the video Joel can be seen being prevented from going behind the bar before repeatedly refusing to leave the premises when asked by staff.

When the 31-year-old appeared to realise he was being filmed, he began to hurl abuse at the barmaid, labelling her a "fucking dickhead" before calling her "the saddest cunt I have ever seen".

Sam repeatedly tries to get his brother to leave but without success .

Wigan have now acted to punish the pair, with a statement on Sunday confirming the sanctions for the brothers. Joel's long-term future at Wigan is also in question and will be determined after an internal investigation.

He has 18 months left on his current deal. "I was pretty disgusted at the video that I saw on Saturday," Radlinski said.

"Our players know and fully understand the role they have to play within the community and to see two of our high-profile, senior players behave in such a way disappointed me greatly.

"Having spoken to both Joel and Sam this morning they both expressed shame and regret about their behaviour and the effects it has had on all of the individuals concerned.

Both of them are fully aware they have disrespected the club and the town.".

12-Step Process for Diagnosing Cerebral Palsy - Duration: 15:12.

12-Step Process for Diagnosing Cerebral Palsy

Step 1: Parental Observations Outside severe cases, which are often diagnosed

at or within days of birth, parents may question noticeable signs. The primary indicators parents

will notice are developmental delay and impaired muscle tone.

Developmental delay occurs when a child does not develop specific skills within the predicted

time period. Parents might notice the child is not reaching for toys at three or four

months, sitting up by six or seven months or walking at twelve to fourteen months. In

some cases, the child might appear to develop motor skills ahead of schedule. Rolling over

is a significant milestone, but when rolling occurs too early, it can be a sign of abnormal

reflexes. It can also indicate spasticity. Demonstrating hand preference before 12 months

is also an indicator of possible Cerebral Palsy.

Muscle tone is another indicator. Normally, muscles contract when a limb is flexed and

relax when the limb is extended. Muscles that are very tight, or inappropriately relaxed,

can be a sign of Cerebral Palsy, which directly affects muscle tone and posture. Tremors are

also a sign.

Additionally, parents may notice the child seems stiff, has problems swallowing, does

not appear to hear or has eyes that do not seem to focus. The child may experience gastrointestinal

problems, such as vomiting, constipation, or bowel obstruction. Some children demonstrate

impaired oral-motor function with signs of vomiting, aspiration pneumonia, failure to

thrive, drooling or communication difficulties. One half of children with Cerebral Palsy experience

seizure activity. Any of these signs, or others, should be discussed with the child's primary

care physician, preferably during well-baby visits.

Step 2: Clinical Observations Parent observations are an important part

of a doctor's evaluation. Pediatricians use parental input as a basis for further

examination. They will explore signs parents notice and gauge the possibility of impairment.

Well-baby visits are designed for clinical documentation of developmental milestones.

Height, weight, reflex, and age-appropriate behavior are part of developmental surveillance

recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics for infants at the ages of 9 months, 18 months,

and 30-months of age. When surveillance of a child spurs concern, the Academy recommends

standardized developmental screening tool assessment and early return visits.

In addition, doctors will look for the persistence of "primitive" reflexes that, in typical

development, appear and disappear in a predictable order during infancy. The tonic reflex (when

the baby's head is turned to the side, the baby will extend the arm on the side the head

is facing, while flexing the other arm) appears around four months and then fades away. It

is not a strong reflex, yet in children with Cerebral Palsy the tonic reflex does not always

fade, and sometimes continues to grow stronger, even dominating a child's motor skills.

Doctors examine the child's supine position (retraction of the head, neck and shoulders);

prone position (protective head turns, arm flexor spasticity, and extensor spasticity

of legs); and upright posture (extensor spasticity of legs, reflexes, and protective arm extension).

Many other reflexes develop, then disappear over time. Doctors test and document the child's

development. The information recorded in these records is then used to confirm or rule out

Cerebral Palsy or other conditions.

Step 3: Motor Skill Development Analysis The cause of Cerebral Palsy is either brain

injury or brain malformation occurring during fetal development, birth, or after birth while

the brain is still developing. The brain damage occurs in parts of the brain that affect motor

control. It does not progress, which differentiates Cerebral Palsy from similar conditions. Motor

skill development analysis is used at various intervals to gauge key developmental milestones.

The following are essential in determining the extent, location, and severity of Cerebral

Palsy.

In the case of Cerebral Palsy, developmental motor delay is a key indicator. The pediatrician

will be evaluating:

Muscle tone Movement coordination and control

Reflex irregularity Posture

Balance Fine motor function

Gross motor function Oromotor function

The evaluation of motor skills may help establish the type(s) of impairment and degree of severity.

This is essential in determining the cause or source of impairment. The severity of impairment

also may be necessary in qualifying for benefits and support services.

Step 4: Medical History Review Eliminating other possibilities is a crucial

factor in diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. Both parents' medical histories are important

to this process. By reviewing medical history of parents, doctors can look for possible

genetic, progressive, or degenerative nervous system disorders. Economic status and social

habits may also be reviewed.

Doctors will also want to know about the child's prenatal history, as well as any complications

during labor and delivery.

Step 5: Documenting Associative Conditions, Co-Mitigating Factors and Ruling-Out Other

Conditions Because there is no test that definitely confirms

or rules out Cerebral Palsy, there is always a chance other conditions must be excluded

from a list of possibilities, and Cerebral Palsy must be fully considered. Other disorders

and conditions can appear as Cerebral Palsy, and Cerebral Palsy is often accompanied by

associated conditions that complicate the process of diagnosis.

The medical examination process can involve multiple doctors, tests, and appointments.

During this time doctors will rule out other similar conditions such as:

Degenerative nervous disorders Genetic diseases

Muscle diseases Metabolism disorders

Nervous system tumors Coagulation disorders

Other injuries or disorders which delay early development, some of which can be "outgrown"

The brain injury or malformation that caused Cerebral Palsy is non-progressive. Many nervous

system disorders do progress. They may start with minor symptoms, but, over time, the symptoms

continue to worsen or multiply. If the child's condition is showing signs of progression,

these signs will help doctors rule out a Cerebral Palsy diagnosis. Like many aspects of diagnosing

Cerebral Palsy, being able to determine the exact cause of your child's challenges requires

observation over time.

Step 6: Obtaining Test Results Many screens, tests and medical specialists

are part of the process of diagnosis. Every state mandates newborn screens at the time

of birth. The tests performed vary by state, but may yield some early results.

Infants who test positive for a developmental delay may be referred to medical specialists

for further evaluations. The pediatrician will document all surveillance, screening,

evaluation, and referral activities in the child's health record. It is suggested that

parents request a written copy of all test results and advice rendered, as well as any

other information presented at various visits to the the doctor's office. These documents

become valuable when speaking with the multitude of practitioners that may be required in the

child's future care. Having the documents on hand will save money and allow parents

to be informed and efficient.

Common tests that involve neurologists or neuroradiologists, include neuroimaging, such

as cranial ultrasound, computed tomography scan (CT Scan), and magnetic resonance imaging

scans (MRIs). These tests allow neurologists to actually "see" the brain. Various disorders,

injuries, and conditions yield different results. These can be used to rule out Cerebral Palsy.

Or, if Cerebral Palsy is eventually diagnosed, they can provide doctors an exact picture

of the injury to the brain. Blood tests may be ordered to check chemistry, plasma and

chromosome levels. Seizure activity will be monitored.

Medical specialists are brought in to test hearing, vision, and perception, as well as

cognitive, behavioral, and physical development. A child may be sent to an orthopedic surgeon

to ascertain delay in motor development, record persistence of primitive reflexes, examine

for dislocated hips, and check on abnormal postural reactions.

A genetic specialist may look for hereditary components.

The lengthy and detailed process can help rule out or confirm Cerebral Palsy, while

also providing a broader assessment of the child's abilities.

Step 7: Diagnosis The months or years it takes to confirm a

Cerebral Palsy diagnosis does not lessen the impact of the news. It can be an emotional

moment for parents.

Many issues that surround the diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy do not have anything to do

with the medical tests and observations necessary to confirm the condition. For example, parents

may initially shy away from the news, especially if they were fostering hope that their child

would "outgrow" the condition. The diagnosis may bring a mixture of fear, guilt, or apprehension.

Some parents wonder if the cause of the child's impairment is somehow their fault, or whether

they did something wrong. Others may be relieved that their child has a physical impairment,

but is expected to live a full, long life.

Doctors, likewise, may not want to deliver a Cerebral Palsy diagnosis until they are

fully certain. A major fear is that a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy will interfere with bonding

between parents and child. Doctors do not want to misdiagnose the condition and cause

undue stress.

Doctors and parents are aware that early diagnosis can lead to early intervention options. Some

treatment protocols have proven more effective when provided early. A formal diagnosis is

required to obtain government benefits that help a family mitigate the financial burden

as expenses for ongoing testing and medical care pile up.

Debate exists over the best time to diagnose Cerebral Palsy. Issues surrounding the timeliness

of diagnosis focus on three areas:

Early diagnosis – Early diagnosis can lead to early intervention, treatments, therapies,

funding and benefit programs. It can result in misdiagnosis.

Delayed diagnosis – A delay in diagnosis can allow time for the family to bond before

the condition is known. It allows time to observe developmental milestones; rule out

other conditions; and confidently confirm Cerebral Palsy.

Misdiagnosis – Misdiagnosis can occur if signs are not properly monitored, tested,

and confirmed. Or, when other conditions aren't ruled out properly. The diagnosis of Cerebral

Palsy may be correct, but the severity, extent, or co-mitigating factors may be improperly

diagnosed. Step 8: Obtaining a Second Opinion

Parents may seek a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and to rule

out the possibility of misdiagnosis. A diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy is enough to warrant a second

opinion. Additional factors that might increase the need for a second opinion include:

When surgery is presented as a treatment option When there are many possible treatment options

When the proposed treatment is unsatisfactory for any reason

When no treatment is presented When parents just feel they require another

opinion The current doctor should not be offended

if parents ask for a referral for a second opinion by explaining that this is a complicated

and important issue for the family. Those who feel uncomfortable asking one provider

for a referral may ask another trusted family doctor, or their health insurance provider

network. The costs and procedure for seeking a second opinion vary depending on the health

care provider, and parents should therefore discuss the intention of seeking a second

opinion with their health insurance provider to fully ascertain whether it will be covered

under the insurance plan.

Second opinions can assist with outstanding questions; remove any doubts; provide a second

opinion on treatment options; and allow for a more informed, educated decision on appropriate

treatment when moving forward.

Step 9: Determining Cause Brain injury or brain malformation is the

root cause of Cerebral Palsy. There are three types of brain injury and a form of brain

malformation:

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) – damage to the white matter of the brain tissue

Intracranial hemorrhage (IVH) – brain hemorrhage Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) or intrapartum

asphyxia – lack of oxygen to the brain (asphyxia) Cerebral dysgenesis – brain malformation

or abnormal brain development The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that

parents attempt to discern what caused the brain damage and at what point in the developmental

process the damage occurred. According to the Academy, cause of brain damage can be

identified in approximately 25% of all cases. Identifying the root cause will provide the

following benefits:

Greater understanding of the child's impairment Identify whether there is recurrent risk in

future pregnancies or family planning Identify specific medical treatments

Identify therapeutic intervention programs Identify early intervention education programs

Identify government assistance, community resources, benefit programs, and funding sources

Further research for prevention and cures Step 10: Care Team Assembly

One of the most important components of parenting a child with Cerebral Palsy is the responsibility

of assembling the proper doctors, therapists, educators, and organizations to provide the

best care, treatment, and support for the child. The goal is to assemble resources that

will help the child succeed.

A care team can evolve over time and is subject to immediate and long-term needs of the child.

The team consists of professionals from different specialties, such as:

Caregivers – daycare, respite, personal assistants, and guide dogs

Support organizations – MyChild™, Cerebral Palsy organizations, community support groups,

disability organizations, counseling services, friends, and family

Educators – school administrators, teachers, speech therapists, and special education support

staff Lawyers – lawyers concentrating in estate

planning, disability rights, birth injury, family law, SSI, school rights, medical malpractice,

and more Government agencies – government agencies

(federal, state and local) offering benefits, education programs, information resources,

disability guidance, health care options, advocacy, and research

Tax and financial planners – accountants and financial planners that advise in special

needs tax advantages, financial planning, wills and trusts, and planning for future

expenses

Step 11: Care Plan Creation A care plan tracks a child's treatment,

including tests, diagnosis, and treatments received. This allows parents to share information

between members of the care team. The care plan is a diary of events, a scrapbook of

medical records, a game plan for future treatment goals, and a collection of test results. It

is a history of the child's care and progress.

The care plan is more, though. Establishing and maintaining a care plan allows easy, efficient

access to valuable information. Keeping receipts organized helps in obtaining tax benefits.

Medical records and test results may be required in an application for benefits and funding.

Planning treatment protocols can help parents plan for financial needs, while wills and

trusts provide for future care of the child in the event the parent can no longer support

the child. Maintaining insurance records helps when paying bills; organized records provide

peace-of-mind. Habits lead to efficiency, and sharing thoughts, feelings and hopes can

be inspiring when reviewing progress years later.

The care plan will continue to benefit the child, and those who will care for them, throughout

the child's life.

Step 12: Embracing a Life with Cerebral Palsy Raising a child who has Cerebral Palsy creates

fresh challenges for the whole family. Research indicates a household with a special needs

child is more prone to depression, suicide, financial strain, relationship challenges,

divorce, and bankruptcy. Others will boast that it can bring relationships together with

purpose.

Embracing a life with Cerebral Palsy requires planning, organization, perspective, adaptation,

and inspiration. For parents, a review of their child's care plan provides a chronology

of choices they've made, steps they've taken, learning they've experienced, and

a glimpse at their hopes and dreams for tomorrow - providing a true source of pride and accomplishment

at the goals achieved and to come. Many learn how to embrace a life with Cerebral Palsy

somewhere inside the journey itself.
