How to Do a Card Sort | CXL Institute UX for Marketers Microlesson - Duration: 3:35.
- In this inter-video,
we're gonna be talking about card sorting.

Card sorting is a research technique
that's used to kinda gain insight
into how to structure data and information.
There's kinda two types of card sorting
that we talk about.
We talk about an open card sort,
which is essentially when you ask users
to organize the cards into groups
and then name each group.
So, you haven't done any pre-work
except from kinda defining the cards.
The opposite to that is a closed card sort,
and this is where you ask the users to organize groups
into pre-defined kind of groups.
So, you've done 50 cards with the individual items
they're supposed to organize,
and then the kind of labels to go with that.
There's kind of how to go about doing that,
there's kinda three steps involved
in to doing the open card sort.
The first one is to give the participants a stack of cards,
of pre-defined cards.
The second step is to ask the participants
to group the cards into categories
that they assume to make sense.
And thirdly is to get the participants
to name those groups of cards.
As for the closed card sort,
how to go about that, there's kinda two steps.
The first one is to give the participants
a stack of pre-defined cards.
And then you also give them a stack
of the kind of pre-defined labels
and ask the participants to group the cards
into those pre-defined group as step number two.
The benefits of card sorting is it's a very simple,
fast, and cheap technique that is kind of well recognized
as a research method, and pretty much anyone
can kinda carry it out.
It's also very much user focused.
You go through and kind of organize all of your information,
so it's very user-centered design focused.
The disadvantages for card sorting
is that it doesn't really look at kinda tasks
and the kinda context of real life sorting.
This also means that sometimes the end results out of it
is not kinda going deep enough
'cause you haven't actually considered the context
in which the users would group information.
The result can also vary depending on
who you actually get in your group as well.
As with anything, when it comes to data and research insight
you need to kind of really put a good lens on it
and kind of examine it in a good way
to make sure you get the most out of it
and to see if you need to redo it potentially,
or if it's the best method included for your task.
In terms of what you need, you only really need
kinda two things.
You need pens, and then you need some Post-it notes
if you don't wanna do kinda pre-defined cards.
So, pens, two color Post-it notes,
one for the card itself and one for the labels,
and that's pretty much it.
So, cheap and simple.
In terms of the exercise, I wanted to carry out
a card sort for your product or service,
or even if you wanna take kind of a familiar web site
that you tend to use on a regular basis.
Step one is to decide if you wanna do
an open or closed card sort.
Step two is to prepare the cards,
so write down every single thing
so the cards will be like what you used before,
apples, and bananas, and kiwis, and so forth.
Then, select your participants.
So there's another inter-video looking at
how to kinda define your audience you can use.
Look at that one to help you define
who you should be including in your card sorts.
The fourth step is to carry out the card sort
and then is about analyzing the results.
And those are the five steps involved
in carrying out and kinda synthesizing the results
of the card sort.
