This is the best sign yet for Clint Frazier and Brandon Drury
Nobody can accurately predict when Brandon Drury and Clint Frazier will be able to leave the disabled list and participate in big-league games, but Frazier took a big step Monday and Drury will do the same Wednesday.
Drury, who hasn't played since April 6 due to migraine headaches and blurry vision, is slated to play third base for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Frazier, who suffered a concussion on Feb.
24 in spring training when he hit his head on a fence, played in an extended spring training game Monday in Clearwater, Fla., and will repeat the process Tuesday.
"We have a plan of attack how to fix this,'' Drury said before participating in a pregame workout before the Yankees' 14-1 win over the Twins on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
Since the Yankees' Triple-A and Double-A affiliates are idle on Thursday, Drury won't play. The plan is for him to resume on Friday.
"Hopefully everything goes well with that and he checks the boxes he needs to,'' said Aaron Boone, who didn't rule out Drury returning at some time next week.
"At this point there is no set plan on how many games he would need. We will go day by day and as he continues to check boxes we will make the evaluation.''.
As for Frazier, he played five innings on Monday, got five at-bats, a hit, reached on an error and stole a base and, according to Boone, came out feeling really good.
"He didn't have any action in the outfield but he played in the outfield. A really positive step for him,'' Boone said.
"Wednesday, he will work out with the A-ball team [Tampa] and start playing with them Thursday. Clint feels like he is finally through it and on his way. Now it's obviously about getting games under his belt.''.
David Hale threw two scoreless innings Monday night in his Yankees debut and then was replaced on the roster by right-hander A.J. Cole.
Cole was designated for assignment by the Nationals on April 20 and dealt to the Yankees for cash considerations on Monday. The 26-year-old Cole made four appearances (two starts) for the Nationals and went 1-1 with a 1306 ERA.
Promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, Hale worked the eighth and ninth Monday and then was designated for assignment.
After going 0-for-7 to start his career, Gleyber Torres singled up the middle in the eighth for his first major league hit, finishing the day 1-for-4 while batting ninth.
First baseman Tyler Austin Austin went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs on Monday night while there was no announcement from MLB regarding his appeal of a five-game suspension for charging the mound against the Red Sox on April 11.
Austin had an appeal hearing last Thursday and is waiting to hear if the ban will be reduced.
There is a possibility the decision won't be made until the middle of the week which would mean that Boone would have Austin to play first against the Twins again on Tuesday night.
Not only will the Yankees miss Austin's hot bat but they will play with 24 players instead of 25 during his suspension.
When Austin is suspended the Yankees will likely turn to switch-hitter Neil Walker, who is hitting .183 (11-for-60) with just two extra-base hits (doubles), to play first. He has started 10 games there this year.
Aaron Judge walked twice and doubled Monday night and has reached base in 27 straight home games. He is hitting .330 (31-for-94) with 14 homers and 35 RBIs in those 27 games.
Boone firmly believes that Sonny Gray's slow start is about to turn even though the right-hander is 1-1 with a 8. 27 ERA in four starts and has given up 23 hits and 11 walks in 16 ¹/₃ innings.
"I feel like physically, Sonny is in a good place,'' Boone said of the right-hander who is slated to start against the Twins on Wednesday night.
"His pitch quality and even though I know it hasn't been great so far I don't feel like it's that far off. It's on all of us to get that right because he is a huge part of our success.
If we are going to be a successful team Sonny is going to be important.''. Boone said he expects Jacoby Ellsbury to play this season but when that will happen the manager doesn't know.
Ellsbury started the season on the DL with an oblique muscle problem, then suffered a hip injury and last week was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis.
"He is doing baseball activities and moving in the right direction but as far as a timetable I would be guessing at that,'' Boone said.
